We enjoyed presenting him with his flowers. We had the pleasure of being joined by Mr. Al Pete, as we delved into E.Jones' basketball background, how the church played a huge part in his musical development, as well as how he caught the ears of hip hop legends. We also spent time discussing the inspiration for the Deadstock series, how to recover from “producer block”and the origin of “hurt niggas jammin'” LOL. This episode was recorded shortly after receiving the news about the Master Teacher Frankie Beverly. Last year we did many interviews live at Coffee Fest. I got to chat with Ian WIlliams of the famed sneaker/coffee concept Deadstock Coffee in Portland Oregon while on the show floor.  In this brief conversation Ian shared some very helpful insights around marketing, entrepreneurship, and staying true to values and culture while growing a business.  Deadstock began as a cart and has operated a sneaker-themed coffee shop in the Old Town Chinatown neighborhood since August 2015. Since then the company has won numerous accolades. Ian and his team have steadily grown the business through genuine hospitality, unique partnerships, and establishing themselves as a leading voice for black owned coffee shops.  Ian has been speaking on coffee, marketing, diversity, and business around the country for a while now and you can find him on the Coffee Fest circuit this year again doing just that.  I hope this interview helps you greatly and stay tuned for more interviews like this soon as we get ready to go to the first Coffee Fest show of 2024 in NYC! In episode 115 of the Outdoor Minimalist podcast, I sat down to chat with Emme Hayes, the founder of Articles in Common. During our conversation, we learned a lot about one another and just how much we actually had in common, including our thoughts on buying used gear and keeping products in circulation for as long as possible. Since buying used is a topic I've explored with other guests in the past, it was fun to take a new direction with Emme and compare how recycling gear and textiles may or may not fit into what we view as a circular production model.  Emme Hayes is the founder of Articles In Common, an online marketplace for outdoor gear and apparel. As a climate activist, I was disappointed when I learned that the outdoor apparel industry was growing at a rate that would diminish our progress to net zero. Frustrated by the limitations of trade-in programs offered by outdoor brands, I wanted an easy way to send in gear that offered a transparent marketplace for outdoorists and athletes alike.  “People need people.” - Ian Williams, founder and owner of Deadstock Coffee. In this episode, Marc and Cathey talk with Ian about defining and building community. They explore how to angle an idea, saying it in a way that people understand while also challenging their thinking. During their play a game of semantics, they end with the notion that one of the keys to finding your unique perspective is asking yourself questions that are not easy for you to answer. By the end of this conversation, like Ian, you'll be able to figure out why you need community and how to express your complex ideas in a simpler way. How does minimalism fit into your outdoor adventure wardrobe? Is it possible to have one shirt that works for every one of your adventures? In episode 103 of the Outdoor Minimalist podcast, we aim to answer those questions. To do that, I sat down with founder and adventurist Jen Loofburrow to see how and why she created a company whose goal is to reduce the number of apparel items you buy. Jen loves long adventures outdoors, self-propelled by foot, pedal, paddle, or ski. She launched the Alaska-based outdoor apparel brand Alpine Fit to combine her passions, values, and experiences in materials development and adventuring in the backcountry of Canada and Alaska. Alpine Fit makes essential pieces of clothing for adventures of all kinds, offering fit options for body shapes and odor-resistant fabrics in base layers, bushwhacking leggings, hats, headbands, and neck gaiters made in the USA. In episode 101 of the Outdoor Minimalist podcast, we get into the nitty gritty of wool production and answer the question: How sustainable and ethical is wool? Wool is a widely used natural fiber in the outdoor industry. From socks to sweaters, people have relied on wool materials to keep them warm and safe in even the most extreme weather. As more of us gravitate away from synthetic materials and try to find more sustainable natural fibers that perform well, we might prefer wool. But is wool always the best choice? You might be surprised by the answers brought forward by my guest, Mike Sombery. Mike served as the Marketing Director at Duckworth for three years and was initially drawn to the company due to its intersectionality of performance fashion, sustainable supply chain and small-footprint management, and Montana-based agriculture. A passionate outdoorsman, Mike has watched as brands operating under the guise of outdoor-loving apparel manufacturers have disregarded the environment and ecology of wild places and is dedicated to helping forge an example-setting model for others to follow and iterate upon. Stephanie Benedetto is the Co-Founder and CEO of Queen of Raw. This award-winning company is turning deadstock pollution into profit through two major channels: 1) its proprietary inventory management software Materia MX, and 2) an integrated deadstock marketplace. Queen of Raw enables fashion companies to sell their excess inventory, while at the same time supporting sustainability compliance measurement and reporting. Stephanie is a member of Pledge 1% and a founding member of the New York Circular City Initiative. An advocate for women in business and sustainability, her companies have been featured in Good Morning America, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal. In this episode we discuss: ●      Why deadstock clothing and textiles are often landfilled or incinerated ●      The $280b+ excess inventory sitting in warehouses worldwide ●      Why the fashion industry is the 2nd largest contributor to global water pollution Key Takeaways: ●      There is an incredible opportunity for new marketplaces to enable value creation by tapping into unused resources and capacity. These marketplaces allow supply to meet demand. This is what Airbnb does. This is what Uber and Lyft do. And, this is what Queen of Raw does. What makes Queen of Raw's marketplace stand out is the sustainability component at the heart of what it does. With their focus on unused textiles that would otherwise be burned or end up in landfill, the company is enabling a circular economy across the fashion industry by keeping resources in use longer. ●      The early success of Queen of Raw shows the power of a compelling vision that benefits all stakeholders. A key part of this success has been Queen of Raw's ability to bring in strategic partners—like SAP and UPS—by aligning on values and clearly adding value. ●      Currently, 1.1 billion people worldwide don't have access to clean water. The World Wildlife Fund has stated that by 2025 two-thirds of the world's population may face water shortages. That's in just 2 years. That statistic is shocking and hard to absorb when 70% of the world's surface is covered by water. Water seems abundant. The problem is, only 3% of global water is freshwater, and 66% of fresh water is unavailable to use (i.e. frozen in glaciers or otherwise inaccessible). That leaves just 1% of total water as fresh water that we can use. Currently, 70% of that freshwater is used in agriculture, and the amount of freshwater is declining. The fashion industry contributes to water scarcity in two major ways: 1) through agricultural products used to make textiles like cotton, wool, and leather—as well as any pesticide runoff that contaminates waterways; and 2) through pollution from toxins used in the textile production process—like fabric dyes—that contaminate waterways. Not contaminating what little freshwater we do have is incredibly important. Truckloads of our unwanted clothing are shipped to continents like Africa, disrupting their local economy and causing massive waste. Today's guest is Negin Izad, owner of NOCTEX, a slow-fashion clothing company that prioritizes form, utility, and ethical design. Negin grew up loving clothes and started sewing in high school. At age 17, the experience of working at a rag yard had Negin decide that she would work in the fashion industry only if she could do so ethically and with as little waste as possible. Negin speaks with Marco about how deadstock textiles became the backbone of her company, NOCTEX, how she built a brand with a loyal following based on solid ethics and transparency since her humble beginnings selling on Etsy, and how microtrends and fast fashion are contributing to unconscious and wasteful consumerism disconnecting consumers to the products they buy. With a warehouse now based in Los Angeles with the hope to have all of her operations based there to reduce even more waste, and core values in ethical production that are spearheading the future of fashion, NOCTEX is proof that slow fashion can be successful all while keeping our planet in mind. In episode 293, Kestrel welcomes Jenna Hanson and Jon Hershman, the cofounders of Revival Eyewear, to the show. Offering an extensive collection of deadstock vintage glasses and sunglasses, Revival Eyewear is dedicated to reminding us that it's possible for old things to be elevated in both quality and style.  “I fell in love with the glasses and the idea that these were vintage but brand new. I had never in my life heard of that concept — deadstock, new old stock. It was so fascinating to me. At Jon's shop in PB, I would take them out of their cases and just be like — what is this? This is a YSL from the 1970s, it has its original packaging, I can't believe this exists.” -Jenna Another niche (yet massive) realm of the fashion industry that we rarely discuss is the GLASSES industry. I'm talking sunglasses and eyeglasses – which I would say are a very integral part of the world of fashion and style. This week's guests started a company where they sell unworn deadstock frames from the ‘60s to the ‘00s. If they were made so long ago, how were they never worn? Where have they been sitting, waiting to find a face to wear them? Well, we get into that. Also, we get into the mud about the powerful Italian conglomerate that owns SO MANY PIECES of the eyewear industry – from insurance companies to eyewear brands to manufacturing to retail eyewear stores. It's amazing the stronghold this megacompany has on today's eyewear industry. Just as we talk about with the fast fashion industry, the eyewear industry has lost much of its quality luster. We often refer to the planned obsolescence of our era, and how — “They just don't make them like they used to.” Well, my guests actually have the knowledge to articulate what makes vintage glasses so different from their current counterparts. What has changed in how they're made today, and what aspects of craftsmanship made them so elevated back n the day? We also touch on the massive waste that the glasses industry is generating, considering the materiality and disposable approach to manufacturing them today. It's wild to think that the styles made today may never be considered *deadstock* or deemed worthy to resell.  Quotes & links from the conversation: “Meet the Four-Eyed, Eight-Tentacled Monopoly That is Making Your Glasses So Expensive”, article in Forbes, that explores some of the power of Luxottica “Eyeglass Start-Up Ready to Battle Industry Titan, Sets Sights on Online Growth”, article in Yahoo Finance, that explores some of the power of Luxottica “We went to a conference last year called Vision Expo, and it was literally just Luxottica everywhere — so they own lenses, they own the lens manufacturer, they own the frame, they own the insurance, they own the places to sell the glasses. I don't know how it gets any more monopoly than that. They own LensCrafters, Sunglass Hut, Target Optical, Pearl Vision, they own the big online store EyeBuyDirect, they own the insurance company EyeMed, and then, just about all of the brands that are inside of a LensCrafters or Sunglass Hut like RayBan, Oakley, Persol, Oliver Peoples - everything basically that you can find inside those stores, they also own those brands.” -Jenna & Jon (20:58) Revival Eyewear Follow Revival Eyewear on Instagram >

In episode 72 of the Outdoor Minimalist podcast, we are talking about deadstock. For listeners who don't know, deadstock is a standard part of the textile industry and creates a lot of waste. We have mentioned it here on the show before, but I had the pleasure of chatting with Nicole Wilson so she could put the extent of the problem into perspective. Nicole is a fashion designer with over a decade of experience in the industry. The Business of You with Rachel Gogos
Episode 61 | Giving Fashion Manufacturing a Makeover with Pawan Gupta

When Pawan Gupta observed supply chain gaps in fashion manufacturing, he decided to design something entirely new: Production technology that solves problems and creates a more sustainable future. Pawan is the Co-Founder and CEO of Fashinza, an AI-driven B2B marketplace and tech-enabled global supply chain platform for fashion brands, retailers and manufacturers.  Fashinza is more than just manufacturing technology. They predict future fashion trends, help retailers modify and order designs, and connect with manufacturers to get timely delivery. By going thought-to-shelf in just 2-4 months, Fashinza helps deliver trends to consumers where, when, and how they want them. Fashinza helps eliminate unsold stock by giving consumers more of what they want and none of what they don't. Their impact on the environment has been substantial, fulfilling Pawan's mission to reduce the impact of the fashion industry globally.  Over the past 12 months, Pawan has led Fashinza through a period of 10x growth, surpassing $150 million an annualized GMV run rate while increasing the Company's global footprint. As a serial entrepreneur for nearly a decade, Pawan co-founded and successfully led Curofy, India's largest network of doctors to an all-cash acquisition by Seattle-based Edifecs. Prior to Curofy, he was an analyst at Deutsche Bank in London where he was involved in structuring derivative products and proprietary credit indices in emerging markets.  Pawan is a mission-driven entrepreneur who believes that technology has the power to change the lives of the most vulnerable for the better. At Fashinza, he is improving the lives and working conditions of workers throughout the fashion supply chain while striving to bring sustainable design and increase efficiency. Pawan Gupta was part of Forbes India's 30 under 30 in 2018, Rising Stars by Bloomberg TV, and Young Turks by CNBC. He has also written guest columns in leading publications and has spoken at global events. To grow a brand, identify a need After the acquisition of his second successful company, Pawan was spending a lot of time at his parents' house. He got an idea.  Inspired by his father's decades of experience in manufacturing, he saw a major gap: Retailers, producers and customers were largely disconnected. He saw their frustration in dealing with middlemen, who made their jobs more difficult and ate into their profit margins. He identified a need.  By researching the gaps in the fashion supply chain, Pawan got to work with his friends and Co-founders to design something the industry had never used before: Technology that helps them predict trends, choose designs, order from manufacturers and get timely deliveries. Fashinza launched and they experienced explosive growth.  Successful entrepreneurs get crystal clear Pawan's advice to any young entrepreneur is this: Don't start a business until you get clear on what your goals are!  While your reasons might be different from everyone else's, you need to identify your true driving force in order to create the type of company you actually want. Whether you want to create a massive impact, make more money, retire early or launch a family business, approach this question with no judgment and complete clarity. Understanding your business goals helps you decide what steps to take as you launch, grow and scale your company.  Enjoy this fascinating conversation with Pawan Gupta on The Business of You. Quotes “We don't just accelerate the manufacturing process - we also help brands make a decision on what to manufacture and what kind of designs to launch, so that the industry only produces stuff the customers want! We are solving the problem of dead stock and overproduction, making fashion more sustainable.” “I got super excited. How can we take these small manufacturing units and connect them with customers across the world?”  “We value the integration of technology and how we could change the fragmented supply chain. It's really challenging but the solution was really needed as well.” “Be very clear on why you want to start a company. No judgment! It's entirely your call, but be very clear on exactly what it is that you want to do. Don't get swayed by propaganda. Not everyone does a job for the same reason. Your reasons could be personal. And your answer affects how you build your own company, as well.” “We believe in providing absolute freedom and autonomy, and trusting that you do the right thing. This is exactly what our hiring and internal management philosophy is.” “I want to make something super big. I care about the impact and what it brings to the supply partners and customers. I care about what it brings to society and millions of workers. This is the most important exciting part of our business.” Links mentioned in this episode: Learn all about Fashinza on their company website at https://www.fashinza.com/en-us  Connect directly with Pawan Gupta on LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/pawaniitd/  Read Pawan Gupta's interview in Medium Magazine at https://medium.com/authority-magazine/pawan-gupta-of-fashinza-on-the-supply-chain-and-the-future-of-retail-e68781e7e862

According to the OECD, if fashion were a country, it would be the fourth largest emitter of CO2 in the world*! And a significant percentage of those emissions comes from just the creation of the textiles and leathers that are to be used for clothing and accessories. Unfortunately, too many of these raw materials are left unused and either end up in a landfill or in climate-controlled (aka energy-guzzling) warehouses. Anna Bakst and Michele Rutigliano are two fashion industry veterans that saw this waste as an opportunity and created the brand We-Ar4. Through their experience, relationships, vision, and skills, they are engineering a new fashion system with beautiful, limited-edition garments that have an immediate and sustainable impact. They use material excess for about 85% of their collection and are very conscious and transparent about what they utilize for the rest. They also have an option to resale items that have been pre-loved.
