Livium Ltd CEO Simon Linge talked with Proactive about the company's progress on its lithium ferro phosphate (LFP) demonstration plant and strategic growth plans. The company is working to secure the remaining A$30.00 million to fully fund the plant, with Linge stating that the process involves "complex transactions" and that "there's a bit to be thought through". The funding includes support from a substantial A$30.00 million grant from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), which covers around 50% of the facility's estimated build and operational costs. Linge said the grant acts as both financial support and validation of Livium's VSPC technology, which is positioned as leading-edge and referred to in China as Generation 4 LFP. He highlighted that demand from potential customers already exceeds the plant's expected capacity, and the company is selectively targeting energy storage and electric vehicle sectors. In the US, Livium is working closely with distributor United Mineral & Chemical Corporation (UMC), which has already introduced the business to new clients and OEMs. Linge said UMC's presence provides "boots on the ground" support, crucial for US market penetration. The company continues to evaluate whether to expand through licensing or direct operations, based on proximity to clients and local market conditions.

Episode #293: Journalist Thomas van Linge shares his insights into the dire situation in Karenni state, contrasting the devastation caused by the military junta versus the resilience of the Karenni people. From the beginning of the coup in February 2021, Thomas closely followed the bravery of Burmese protesters who transformed civil resistance into an armed struggle. His work mapping the conflict revealed that the junta's control is weaker than originally thought, with military forces largely confined to isolated, hilltop bases.The resistance, despite being outgunned, has shown remarkable unity and determination. Lacking a central leadership, they operate in a uniquely cooperative way, effectively countering the junta's efforts. Thomas notes how the Karennis' community-driven spirit allows them to weather internal conflicts and maintain unity, even without a dominant leader.Thomas also highlights the failures of the international community, criticizing ineffective humanitarian aid and the refusal of neighboring Thailand to provide adequate sanctuary to refugees. Yet he points out that while the lack of international intervention is legitimate grounds for criticism, it does have an upside, as it enables the resistance to maintain a grassroots character, free from external manipulation."Despite all these hardships, all these difficulties, I've never sensed any despair or dip in morale among the people... They're all keeping their spirits up," he says. "Where we visited, most of the villages have been abandoned because they are within the artillery range of the regime. But the regime itself is now isolated in the hilltop camps and could be eliminated from those bases in different perceivable future! So when those areas are completely cleared, then the people could leave the IDP camps and come back to their villages to start rebuilding."

Episode #272: “I didn't want to be in a world where we have to keep watching people struggling for freedom and then getting suppressed and getting their dreams crushed. [In Burma,] it was mostly women and girls who were participating in the protests, even more than men! I prayed at that time… I'm not religious, but I just wished and prayed for some way to help. And from that point on, after that period of those very emotional few weeks, I felt like a changed person.”Initially a university activist in the US, Michael Sladnick's focus shifted to Myanmar after the military coup in 2021. Deeply moved by the brutal repression of protests, he committed himself to the cause, learning Burmese and connecting directly with local activists and resistance fighters along the Thai-Burma border. During a recent trip to Karenni State with the Dutch journalist Thomas van Linge, Michael witnessed an unfolding humanitarian crisis, alongside the resilient spirit of the local population. Karenni, a state close to liberation, still faces ongoing airstrikes and artillery attacks. Civilians live in bombed-out villages, struggling with limited food, no electricity, and inadequate medical supplies. Yet, their determination to fight for democracy remains unwavering.Michael emphasizes the critical need for international support. He recently launched a campaign, "Final Step: Karenni to Naypyidaw," to raise awareness and funds for ammunition and humanitarian aid. He highlighted the inspiring collaboration among diverse ethnic groups in Karenni, working together against the military.“I firmly believe that the ‘above-ground revolution' and public activism is just as important as the PDFs, especially for building international support,” he says in closing. “So we want to use this campaign to build something sustained to support those type of people as well as to support the humanitarian needs of refugees in all other parts of Myanmar. We're hoping that this is just the first step of that.”

On se demande parfois comment les astronautes accomplissent les gestes de la vie quotidienne dans l'espace. Comment s'y prennent-ils, par exemple, pour laver leur linge ? En principe, ils devraient faire leur lessive assez souvent. En effet, ils doivent faire des exercices réguliers, pour compenser tout le temps passé en apesanteur et conserver leur vigueur musculaire. Il leur faut donc changer régulièrement de vêtements. Et pourtant, ces habits ne sont pas lavés. Les cosmonautes les chargent dans des cargos ravitailleurs en fin de mission, qui jouent alors le rôle de poubelles spatiales. Ces vaisseaux finissent ensuite par brûler au contact de l'atmosphère terrestre.Cette solution a été adoptée faute de mieux, mais elle n'est pas satisfaisante. Elle entraîne un véritable gaspillage et oblige à prévoir près de 70 kilos de vêtements pour les astronautes de la Station spatiale internationale (ISS). Mais, pour l'instant, la question du lavage du linge dans l'espace n'est pas résolue. Pour cela, il faudrait d'abord prévoir une quantité supplémentaire d'eau. Or celle-ci est déjà une denrée rare dans la station spatiale. Pour répondre aux besoins des astronautes, on est même amené, en effet, à recycler la vapeur d'eau et l'urine des cosmonautes. Transporter à bord l'eau nécessaire au fonctionnement d'une machine à laver poserait donc un véritable problème. Sans parler de l'encombrement et du poids d'un tel appareil. Or la place est comptée à bord de la station spatiale, et chaque cm2 est déjà utilisé. Et comme l'eau est rare, il n'est pas non plus question de douche pour les astronautes, qui auraient pu laver leurs vêtements en faisant leurs ablutions. En fait, ils utilisent des lingettes pour faire leur toilette. La lessive dans l'espace fait partie de ces questions d'intendance qui peuvent faire sourire. Elles ont pourtant leur importance dans le cadre des bases permanentes sur la Lune ou sur Mars qui verront peut-être le jour dans un avenir prochain. C'est pourquoi les chercheurs de la NASA travaillent d'arrache-pied à une technique permettant aux astronautes de laver et de réutiliser leur linge. Hébergé par Acast. Attentatet mot Norsk Hydros anläggning i Vemork, väster om Oslo, 1943 är en av de mest legendariska specialoperationerna under andra världskriget. Syftet var att förstöra möjligheterna för de nazityska fysikerna i Berlin att producera en kärnreaktor, och i förlängningen en atombomb. För detta krävdes så kallat tungvatten, eller deuterium, ett ämne som behövdes för att kontrollera kärnklyvningsprocessen i en reaktor.Den enda tungvattenanläggningen som Hitler hade kontroll över, var Norsk Hydros anläggning i Vemork. Därav hamnade anläggningen snart bland de allierades prioriterade mål.I denna nymixade repris av Militärhistoriepodden berättar idéhistorikern Peter Bennesved och professorn i historia Martin Hårdstedt om dramat vid Vemork och varför vi minns det än idag.Attentatet mot Norsk Hydro i Vemork genomfördes av norska frivilliga soldater under brittisk ledning och träning, och otroligt nog, helt utan blodspillan. Kommandosoldaterna, kända under namnet ”Kompani Linge”, lyckades obemärkt landsättas från England och ta sig över fjällvidderna på skidor, ta sig in i anläggningen obemärkt, spränga utrustningen i källaren och sedan fly därifrån utan att ett enda skott avlossades.Dramat runt kompani Linge och deras försök att beröva tyskarna möjligheterna att utveckla atombomber är väldokumenterat och framstår i sig som en närmast otrolig bedrift. Händelserna i Vemork ska dock ses i kontext med något mycket större och i efterhand kan hela uppdraget delvis ifrågasättas. Kompani Linges attacker var ju förvisso lyckade, men för att lyckas med att producera en atombomb skulle det krävas mycket mer än bara deuterium, så hur stor roll spelade egentligen Kompani Linges aktioner mot tyska intressen?Sedan 1930-talets mitt hade forskare på båda sidor av den europeiska konflikten försökt beforska och så småningom också försöka behärska kraften i kärnklyvningsprocessen. Men den tyska krigsmaktens sätt att bedriva forskning möjliggjorde knappast någon produktion av atombomber i långa loppet. Medan wehrmacht endast enrollerade en handfull fysiker och assistenter till försöken att producera en testreaktor, så beordrade President Roosevelt en enorm industriell satsning inom ramen för Manhattanprojektet, som sysselsatte mer än 100 000 människor. Den industriella och intellektuella kapaciteten i väst var helt enkelt mångdubbelt större.I efterhand är det än idag inte säkert att de tyska forskarna, med Werner Heisenberg i spetsen, ens hade förstått hur en bomb skulle kunna produceras. Des chercheurs danois ont voulu savoir pourquoi un tel parfum s'exhalait du linge séché au soleil. Pour cela, ils ont lavé trois serviettes, dans une eau très pure. Chacune d'entre elles a ensuite été suspendue sur une corde située dans un endroit différent : un lieu ensoleillé, une pièce sombre et un balcon à l'ombre. Puis les serviettes ont été placées dans des sacs en plastique durant un temps suffisant pour que les composés organiques se libèrent. L'analyse de l'air contenu dans les sacs, menée au moyen d'une technique spécifique, a d'abord permis de séparer ces composés, puis de les étudier séparément. Les chercheurs ont remarqué que les serviettes séchées au soleil s'étaient imprégnées d'un plus grand nombre de composés organiques. Ils pensent que certains d'entre eux pourraient être produits au contact de l'ozone de l'air. Ce gaz réagirait en effet avec le linge humide pour l'imprégner de ces substances odorantes. Certaines, d'ailleurs, sont utilisées dans la fabrication de parfums ou l'industrie alimentaire. L'ozone aurait une autre vertu : il détruirait les bactéries responsables des odeurs désagréables qui peuvent émaner du linge séché dans un espace confiné. Quand le linge sèche dans le jardin, les arômes des plantes et des fleurs odorantes s'imprègnent également dans le tissu, dont les fibres parviennent à capter ces parfums. Ceci étant, le mécanisme exact qui préside à ces réactions n'est pas encore connu avec précision. Si une chemise ou un pantalon blancs, séchés en extérieur, sentent bon, ils ont aussi tendance à retrouver leur éclat. Du moins si le soleil est au rendez-vous.
