This week, Roqayah is joined in Beirut by writer and video journalist Hadi Hoteit, war correspondent for Press TV and producer of Wartime Cafe with Laith Marouf along with other programming at Free Palestine TV. Hadi has been reporting from the frontlines of Israel's ongoing assault on Lebanon where he covers the aftermath of Israeli strikes and their devastating impact on infrastructure and civilian life. They discuss the politics of so-called media “neutrality,” the dehumanization of communities in the South, the erasure of Lebanese suffering, and the emotional toll of documenting war. Hadi also reflects on the complicity of mainstream media in Israeli impunity and the silence of the Lebanese state in the face of relentless bombardment. In her first interview since becoming Principal Director of the Defense Department's Cyber Academic Engagement Office (CAEO), Diba Hadi reflects on her role and vision for the office since stepping into the position in 2024 during the 2025 HammerCON conference in Laurel, Maryland. Hadi shares insights into her day-to-day responsibilities and highlights efforts to strengthen the integration of universities into the Centers of Academic Excellence community. Her goal: to develop cyber talent aligned with the Defense Department's evolving workforce needs. She explores how improved data collection, interagency collaboration and smarter resource allocation can streamline reporting processes and support broader DOD hiring objectives. Hadi also discusses key initiatives, including scholarships, research partnerships and capacity-building grants, that bring together academia, industry and government to build cyber capabilities at their source.
Can probability theory help explain how the mind works? In this episode of Deep Dives with Iman, host Iman Mossavat talks with Dr. Hadi Vafaii, a postdoctoral scholar at UC Berkeley's Redwood Center for Theoretical Neuroscience, working in Jacob Yates's lab. The conversation focuses on “perception as inference”—a century-old idea that continues to influence modern neuroscience, from predictive coding to the free energy principle. While rooted in probability theory and Bayesian statistics, Hadi builds intuition step by step, using simple, relatable examples. He explains how the brain interprets the world by guessing the hidden causes behind what we see and hear, combining prior knowledge with new evidence. The episode also explores how personal beliefs and life experiences shape interpretation and why uncertainty is a vital part of life rather than a weakness.

The incredible Lebanese actor Hadi Tabbal just finished the monumental Broadway run of Sanaz Toossi's Pulitzer Prize-winning play “English.” He originated the role of Omid, and performed in various iterations of this powerful and transformative play over the last few years. On this episode, he talks about the fascinatingly unique aspect of “English” that is unlike any other play he's performed, and what he means when he says it is “alive” every night and “very delicate,” and he has to “take care” not to “derail” it. He explains the difference between “discovery” and “deciding,” talks about the “saddest” part of acting, describes his pre-show ritual, how it all comes down to “learning people,” and much more. Back To One is the in-depth, no-nonsense, actors-on-acting podcast from Filmmaker Magazine. In each episode, host Peter Rinaldi invites one working actor to do a deep dive into their unique process, psychology, and approach to the craft. Follow Back To One on Instagram

Mirza Hadi Ruswa recounts in the preface of his novel, Umrao Jaan Ada, how he came to write the story of a courtesan from Lucknow. His friend Munshi Ahmad Hussain had rented a floor in a chowk in Lucknow and this is where he organised mushairas for his friends. Next to his house lives a most mysterious woman who is never seen, but sometimes late at night she can be heard singing. Once at a mushaira hosted by Munshi, Ruswa recites a couplet and a soft voice from next door exclaims, “wah! Wah!”. The mysterious lady invites Ruswa to her home and turns out to be Umrao Jaan Ada who Ruswa had known many years ago. She then proceeds to narrate her story to Ruswa, which then became the famous novel, Umrao Jaan Ada.

Welcome back to Pizza Quest!Muhammad Abdul-Hadi's and Michael Carter's new book, "We the Pizza," just came out this week. They join us from their restaurant, Down North Pizza, in Philadelphia's Strawberry Hill neighborhood, to tell us all about it. The subtitle of the book, "Slangin' Pies and Saving Lives" is really what makes Down North Pizza unique among the many great pizzerias we feature here. The restaurant represents a larger mission, including the hiring of formerly incarcerated individuals, providing housing subsidies for those in need, and a number of other neighborhood and community projects that we discuss in this conversation with Muhammad and Michael, all designed to elevate the quality of life for the locals and to also serve as a model for, hopefully, otherDown North's across the country. It's a work-in-progress but the launching pad for it all is the amazing and creative square-style pan pizza menu created by head chef Michael Carter and his team of cooks. The creativity on display is beautifully captured in their new book, written by Muhammad, along with co-author David Joachim, as well as beautifully energetic photos by Amurri Lauren. As you will hear here, all of the good works envisioned by Muhammad, who has been a community activist for years in Philadelphia, are made possible by the success of Down North Pizza. Join us as we discuss how to make a vision of community transformation come true, in this week's episode of Pizza Quest.
This week, food columnist for The New York Times Magazine, Lisa Donovan, joins us to talk about what she's been cooking up recently and help answer our listeners' kitchen conundrums, from making the best tomato paste despite out-of-season tomatoes to using unsweetened chocolate in baking recipes. Lisa is the author of the memoir Our Lady of Perpetual Hunger, and she leaves us with a recipe for a lovely Tarte Tatin to add to our repertoire. Then, we head over to Philadelphia, where we meet the founder and owner of Down North Pizza, Muhammad Abdul-Hadi. Muhammad tells us about his mission-driven restaurant dedicated to helping formerly incarcerated people rebuild their lives. Muhammad's new cookbook is We The Pizza: Slangin' Pies, and Savin' Lives and he leaves us with his signature pizza sauce recipe, Norf Sauce.Broadcast dates for this episode:February 7, 2025 (originally aired)Your support is a special ingredient in helping to make The Splendid Table.
