These three friends share experiences from their past that helped shape and inform who they are today, how they self-identify, and discuss the hot new movie, 'Crazy Rich Asians.' Post Production Note from Atmika: Time flies! Especially if you’re traveling back and forth - then 5 weeks don’t seem to be that long. I just came back from my annual trip to the US where I visited family and dear friends on the East and West Coasts. It is always a special time of the year for me where I re-charge my batteries, re-connect with loved ones and always get inspired by them, new connections and experiences. One of my dear friends, Angela has a podcast, Power of Connection Podcast. Re-connecting with her has been enriching and inspiring every time I see her or talk to her. Together with her cousin, Emily from L.A., who has also become a dear friend, we recorded one podcast episode. In the episode, we talk about “Cultural Identities”, how it was for us growing up Asian in the US or in Germany. In the US, the term “Asian-American” is used as identification as is “African-American” or any other ethnicity within the American culture. In Germany, we actually also have these terms as well which I only realized as I am now listening to the podcast and being back in Berlin. However, I have never really personally come across these terms so much in my daily life. These labels and identifications are used generally when one wants to describe a person’s heritage if for example, a surname is not typical German name. But maybe not so much as a general classification or identification of groups. At least, I haven’t or don’t perceive it as much. However, this can only be my subjective perception because I grew up in a German-White household and because I grew up being told that race doesn’t matter and color doesn’t matter. So check out my dear friend, Angela’s new podcast episode of Power of Connection!
