Testo e voce: Alice De BaccoProduzione: Fondazione TRGTecnico di registrazione: Mattia MontiProgetto e montaggio a cura di Claudia MartoreAUDIO CREDITS:Free music for non-commercial use from Fesliyan Studios

Recycle Michael interviews Green Mary on Earth Day. Mary Munat "Green Mary" tells her story about getting inspired to make events Zero Waste. Mary Munat entered the waste diversion world from her position as Human Resources Manager with The Health and Harmony Festival in Sonoma County in 2001. There, working in the role of volunteer coordinator, she heard environmental activist Julia Butterfly Hill speaking on the urgency of all event-goers to heed their environmental impact out at public events. Green light bulbs went off. All systems aligned internally and socially to give birth to a local industry. Within three years, before “greening” was even a verb, Green Mary moved from one local festival to greening a dozen, to over 200 event-related dates in 2015. She helped shift the focus from recycling and throw away items to highly compostable food service wares, ensuring that everything that can be composted or re-used is diverted from the landfill. There is within us a need for the wild, an innate recognition that the fine world we're making, straight lined, tidy, ordered, and smooth, cannot sustain our souls; there is a knowledge that our dream of dominion over nature will ultimately destroy us and yet, we suppress ourselves, madly manicuring human nature to confirm and conform to an homogenized, sanitized, commodified vision of paradise. But, there is an awakening around the world. Millions are shedding the delusion we can successfully exist extant from nature and are working to reconnect with our only home, planet Earth. Two years ago, Julia Butterfly Hill, came to ground after the longest tree-sit since homo erectus first ventured into the African savannah. Hello my friends, welcome to Chapter 28 of Sanguine Stories. Today I’ll be sharing with you a story that I wrote nearly 10 years ago. Here’s a little backstory just to catch you up: In the winter of 2008, I made my first visit to Luna, the tree that was given worldwide attention by Julia Butterfly Hill. It was 20 years ago on December 10th, 1997, that she climbed this giant redwood named Luna and didn’t come down for 738 days. I was so very fortunate to make 4 visits to Luna before moving to Costa Rica. My trips to Luna, this awe-inspiring tree, are one of only a few things that I miss about living in California. Walking into Luna’s grove is more like walking into sacred space, a sanctuary of harmony. If you’ve listened to Chapter 13 of this podcast, you know that I am not a woo-woo person. But there is something special about Luna’s grove, there’s an energy there. Read the full transcript here.

Our guest today is Katchie Ananda. Katchie is an international Yoga and Dharma teacher whose life’s work has been to explore the practices of yoga and dharma and share their path to freedom with others. She has well over 10,000 teaching hours, spanning nearly 30 years as a full-time practitioner and trainer and she has developed numerous approaches to wisdom in body, mind and heart. Her eclectic background includes certifications in Anusara, Jivamukti, Integral, Ashtanga Yoga by Richard Freeman and many years of practice with Buddhist teacher and author Jack Kornfield. At one point, Katchie was the co-founder/director of Yoga Sangha, a studio in San Francisco’s Mission district, dedicated to Yoga and Dharma. Under Katchie’s guidance, Yoga Sangha became a much beloved community center and attracted students who shared a concern for social justice and equality. In 2007 Katchie launched the powerful Spiritual Activation Series, a forum through which the yoga community could connect with well-known authors and activists such as John Robbins, Jack Kornfield and Julia Butterfly Hill. The goal of the series was to raise awareness about human and animal rights, the environment, social justice, and highlight the interconnectedness of Yoga and Dharma. In this same spirit, Katchie volunteered for many years at San Quentin, teaching yoga and Dharma to long-term inmates. Her leadership and example in yoga and social change prompted Yoga Journal to name Katchie one of five top yoga teachers making change in the world. It was a rare treat to catch her in Bali because she doesn’t teach much at festivals or in small classes these days.  I sat with her after taking two of her classes at the Bali Spirit Festival, because I was so impressed with her vast wisdom and open hearted teaching style. In our interview Katchi talks about her journey and passion as a yoga teacher for nearly 30 years. We discuss the value of a solo home practice, expressing the elements through your practice. And how practicing yoga helps you trust your own inner authority, and can make the world a better place. Check the show notes to find Katchie’s schedule, links to her book, and also her inspiring instagram account as well as soundcloud, which includes a large playlist of her yoga classes. Julia Butterfly Hill ascended a 1500-year-old redwood tree on December 10, 1997, and remained there for 738 days. Affectionately named Luna, the redwood and others surrounding it were in danger of being taken down by a logging company that was clear-cutting the area. After two years of enduring extreme weather, helicopter harassment, angry logger intimidation tactics and a ten-day siege by the company's security guards Hill saved her tree and all of the others within a 200-foot zone. Today, a motivational speaker, Julia is commonly heard asking her audience one question. "What is your tree?" What is it that you are passionate about in life and what makes you feel purposeful? These are the questions that we get to answer if we are willing to ask them. Kathleen Kastner, our guest today, is living in her tree and her road to finding this home within herself has been via a series of Hail Mary passes. Having the approval of those around her never stopped Kathleen from answering the deep calls from within, and as you will hear in our conversation, her leaps of faith have been perfectly supported by powers far beyond the approval of family and friends. It may be easy to listen to Kathleen's story and think that you are different and that life could never end up so joyful for you. The truth is, the differences are found in each individuals' willingness to jump when the universe calls. When I am feeling shaky in my discomfort, and the idea of curling up in a space of comfort seems like the only reasonable action to take, I remind myself that I am here on purpose. I remind myself that I have an ever evolving purpose and outright obligation as a human to unearth the gifts I came here to share. Is this scary? Hell yes. Bumpy? For sure! But my experience has shown me that when we follow our hearts the universe conspires to support us. The path to purpose is not always pretty, I can't stress this enough. Kathleen spent much of her life addicted to exercise, sugar and caffeine. She partied hard and like so many people, used external substances to avoid feeling true life. This is what most of us do because it's socially acceptable to wake up to coffee and go to bed with wine. It feels better to grab that 3 o'clock latte and vent to a friend than to feel the weight of our choices. These cycles are so common, they are normalized and for Kathleen, it wasn't until her first yoga class, on account of Dr. Deepak Chopra, that everything started to shift. Kathleen holds a master’s Degree in Exercise Physiology and a Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism. She is a Certified Food for Life Plant-Based Instructor with the Physician’s Committee for Responsible Medicine and has been vegan since 2002. She has written two books, Yoga’s Path to Weight Loss: A Mind Body Spirit Guide to Loving Yourself Lean and The Cheerleader Speaks: What God Taught Me About Men and Myself. Both books include deep insight into Kathleen's journey. A journey of intuitive strength, overcoming unworthiness and finding her tree.
