Ram Dass explores the culture surrounding LSD in 1977, and how he has no desire to legislate how other people live their lives. He shares his guru's instructions for using the “yogi medicine” and talks about whether or not it's important to have a guide for psychedelic experiences. Finally, Ram Dass cautions that “getting high and seeing” is only one part of the process of change, and there are inner processes necessary to bring about change in life. He discusses the cultural evolution brought about by psychedelics and the shifts in consciousness he sees taking place. The Ram Dass community gathers regularly to engage in meaningful discussions about the podcast. We invite you to join us and share your curiosities, insights, and wisdom. Author of "Drugs As Weapons Against Us" John Potash joins again to share his research for his newest documentary "CIA Drugs R Us", a dive into how the CIA has used illicit substances against the masses for decades all while framing it as "sticking it to The Man". We talk about how the hippie movement was essentially baked in a lab and used as dedicated MKULTRA test subjects, as well as avenues the MKULTRA may still be operating today through government sanctioned programs such as MAPS (The Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies) and cultural arenas such as Burning Man. John's research reveals that many "alternative" subcultures are not as the appear at first glance. Is trauma real? In what sense? These questions don't in any way deny the real suffering of people diagnosed with trauma. Instead, they ask how we might take a broader and deeper look at trauma, in order to heal and transcend it. How can we do better in reducing the emergence of traumatizing experiences, and how can we do better in supporting ourselves and other in healing from these experiences, and opening up new possibilities for evolutionary learning? In her book Spacious Minds, anthropologist and clinical psychologist Sara E. Lewis invites us to see that resilience is not a mere absence of suffering. Sara's research reveals how those who cope most gracefully may indeed experience deep pain and loss. Looking at the Tibetan diaspora, she challenges perspectives that liken resilience to the hardiness of physical materials, suggesting people should "bounce back" from adversity. More broadly, this ethnography calls into question the tendency to use trauma as an organizing principle for all studies of conflict where suffering is understood as an individual problem rooted in psychiatric illness.Beyond simply articulating the ways that Tibetan categories of distress are different from biomedical ones, Spacious Minds shows how Tibetan Buddhism frames new possibilities for understanding resilience. Here, the social and religious landscape encourages those exposed to violence to see past events as impermanent and illusory, where debriefing, working-through, or processing past events only solidifies suffering and may even cause illness. Resilience in Dharamsala is understood as sems pa chen po, a vast and spacious mind that does not fixate on individual problems, but rather uses suffering as an opportunity to generate compassion for others in the endless cycle of samsara. A big mind view helps to see suffering in life as ordinary. And yet, an intriguing paradox occurs. As Lewis deftly demonstrates, Tibetans in exile have learned that human rights campaigns are predicated on the creation and circulation of the trauma narrative; in this way, Tibetan activists utilize foreign trauma discourse, not for psychological healing, but as a political device and act of agency.Sara Lewis, PhD, LCSW is co-founder and Director of Training and Research at Naropa University's Center for Psychedelic Studies. Sara earned her PhD at Columbia University in medical anthropology and public health; her research sits at the intersection of religion, culture and healing with an emphasis on non-ordinary states. As a Fulbright scholar, she conducted long term ethnographic research in India, culminating in her book, Spacious Minds: Trauma and Resilience in Tibetan Buddhism, which investigates how Buddhist concepts of mind shape traumatic memory and pathways to resilience. As a contemplative psychotherapist, she specializes in intergenerational trauma and healing through Somatic Experiencing and psychedelic-assisted therapy.

In this episode, Joe interviews Diana Quinn, ND: naturopathic doctor, healing justice practitioner, and director of clinical education at the Naropa Center for Psychedelic Studies, where she directs their Psilocybin Facilitator Training certificate program. She discusses her path from anthropology to naturopathy, and eventually to psychedelics and activism, finding a framework for psychedelic education grounded in healing justice, which recognizes the impact of collective trauma on all of us, seeks to reclaim lost or stolen models of healing, focuses on equity and accessibility, and brings an anti-oppression lens to training programs to give students a greater capacity for culturally responsive care. She encourages seeing things from an anti-capitalist viewpoint, and recognizes the huge clash between using such powerful and mystical medicines inside structures so embedded with problematic human qualities. How can you build inside of these Western systems without being affected by that capitalist energy? She discusses: The importance of respecting plants from other cultures – that no healing or consciousness expansion is justifiable when it threatens an entire species The challenge of integrating the weirdest parts of non-ordinary states into education: How does a Western framework come to terms with the ineffable? How colonialism and the culture born from it has hurt us all The importance of finding your own lineage and what is sacred to you The work of Rick Tarnas and the amazing patterns we can find in astrology and more! Andrew has been closely following the efforts of organizations like MAPS (Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies) and Lykos Therapeutics as they pioneer the use of MDMA-assisted therapy for treating PTSD. Recently, the FDA delivered a surprising and disappointing decision, declining to approve MDMA-assisted therapy despite promising clinical data and asking the company to conduct an additional Phase 3 Study. This ruling has sent shockwaves through the field of psychedelic medicine, especially for those who had high hopes that MDMA would become the first federally regulated psychedelic treatment. In our conversation today, Andrew will share his insights on the FDA's decision, the implications for Lykos Therapeutics, and what this means for the future of psychedelic therapies. We'll delve into the challenges faced by Lykos, including the FDA's request for an additional clinical trial, which could add years and significant costs to the approval process. We'll also explore the broader context of this decision—how it affects the momentum of the psychedelic medicine movement, the reaction from supporters and critics alike, and the potential shifts in strategy as the industry continues to navigate regulatory hurdles. For those interested in the intersection of health, science, and business, this discussion promises to be both timely and insightful. There is a lot of exciting research going on right now in the world of psychedelic medicine. So much, in fact, that it can be difficult to keep track of it all. Where do you go for reliable information? How do you interpret results? How is it that studies with similar hypotheses can have contradictory findings? In today's episode of the Psychedelic Therapy Frontiers podcast, we're going to discuss these questions while we walk you through a few studies that Reid and I found interesting. Last month, the first psychedelic therapy treatment came before the Food and Drug Administration for a vote. It entailed using MDMA, also known as ecstasy or molly, to treat PTSD.MDMA therapy has looked promising as a treatment for PTSD and other mental health conditions in some studies. But the FDA scientific advisory panel that evaluated this treatment voted overwhelmingly against approving it.Many of the arguments against approval had less to do with MDMA itself than with the methodology of the clinical trials done by Lykos Therapeutics, formerly the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies, or MAPS. The FDA panel was presented with allegations of misconduct and incongruous data, including a letter by trial participant Sarah McNamee.McNamee, who joined the trial for treatment of PTSD, is also a licensed psychotherapist and researcher of trauma and psychotherapy at McGill University in Montreal. She joins guest host Rachel Feltman alongside Dr. Eiko Fried, a methodologist and psychologist at Leiden University in the Netherlands, to discuss the decision. If you or someone you know is struggling with PTSD or other mental health conditions, call 988 for the suicide and crisis lifeline.Transcripts for each segment will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com. Part 1 of Episode 150! Yay!! And now for something completely different. This episode is a bit of a departure from our regular show. We invite Alex Criddle and Cody Noconi, researchers into the psychedelic origins of Mormonism, to respond to the recent debate on the Mormon Book Reviews channel between ourselves and Mormon apologist, Brian Hales. Brian attempts to provide the apologetic response to the theory that Joseph Smith utilized psychedelics (entheogens) in the early history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in order to facilitate visionary experiences for the early Saints. Disinformation requires much greater effort than simply stating information so we do our best to debunk his debunking (rebunk the theory?). This one is a long haul so we split it into 2 episodes to make it a little more digestible. Smith was a prophet of the RLDS Mormons and paternal grandson of the founder Joseph Smith. In 1918 Frederick published this Ph.D. dissertation breaking down altered states of consciousness from an early psychologist's perspective, specifically, religious states of ‘ecstacy' as he called it. A lengthy chapter devoted to peyote is particularly worth reading. “The Higher Powers: Fred M - Smith and the Peyote Ceremonies” - Shelby Barnes' 1995 paper highlighting the curious psychedelic interests of Frederick M. Smith. While Barnes does not make any direct connections to Joseph Smith and psychedelics, Barnes does note that Frederick's interests were an attempt to find the reliable keys to visionary revelation that his grandfather Joseph had demonstrated. “Restoration and the Sacred Mushroom” - Dr. Robert Beckstead's seminal research paper presented at the August 2007 Sunstone Symposium. Beckstead's paper was the first to propose the possibility that Joseph Smith used psychedelics to facilitate visionary experiences. “A 1920's Harvard Psychedelic Circle with a Mormon Connection: Peyote Use amongst the Harvard Aesthetes” Alan Piper's 2016 paper highlighting Frederick M. This was the first paper on the subject published in an academic journal. “Visions, Mushrooms, Fungi, Cacti, and Toads: Joseph Smith's Reported Use of Entheogens” Brian Hales' 2020 response paper to the one published in the Journal of Psychedelic Studies. As a believing Mormon engaged in academic apologetics, Hales details what he perceives to be holes in the proposed hypothesis. “The Psychedelic History of Mormonism, Magic, and Drugs” - Cody Noconi's book published in 2021. “Psychedelics as a Means of Revelation in Early and Contemporary Mormonism (Part 1)” Alex Criddle's 2023 paper that was originally presented at the Forms of Psychedelic Life conference at UC Berkeley (April 14-15, 2023). “Psychedelics as a Means of Revelation in Early and Contemporary Mormonism (Part 2)” A continuation of Alex Criddle's 2023 paper. “A Real Spiritual High: In Defense of Psychedelic Mysticism” An enlightening philosophical essay from Alex Criddle. Psychedelic drugs have been illegal for 50 years, but they're trickling back into the mainstream because they show promise in helping treat post-traumatic stress disorder and other mental health challenges. We begin the hour with reporter Jonathan A. Davis visiting Psychedelic Science 2023, the largest-ever conference on psychedelic drugs. It's put on by the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies, an organization dedicated to legalizing MDMA (also known as ecstasy or molly) and other psychedelic drugs. Research shows that MDMA-assisted therapy can help treat depression and PTSD, and it's moving toward approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Psychedelics were studied in the 1950s and '60s as mental health treatments, but the war on drugs put a stop to research. Now, these drugs are gaining bipartisan support from politicians looking for solutions to the mental health crisis among veterans. Then Reveal's Michael I Schiller visits a group of veterans who are not waiting for psychedelic-assisted therapy to be approved by the federal government. They've joined a church founded by an Iraq War veteran who uses psychedelics as religious sacraments. Schiller accompanies them on a retreat in rural Texas, where they share the depths of their post-traumatic stress and the relief they've felt after psychedelic treatments. He also explores the risks involved in taking these drugs. We close with an intimate audio diary from a woman in Oakland, California, who's going through therapy with the one psychedelic drug that can be legally prescribed currently in the U.S.: ketamine. Ketamine started out as an anesthetic, but researchers found it can help with treatment-resistant depression when used in tandem with talk therapy. Ketamine can be dangerous if abused, but it also has helped people find relief from mental health issues. This story was produced by Davis. This is an update of an episode that originally aired in October 2023. On this episode we are joined by psychopharmacologist, psychiatrist, and author Julie Holland MD. Julie and Drew discuss the importance of psychedelics for healing, unpacking the prevalent role it can by in psychotherapy and treating trauma. Julie also speaks about the danger of improperly used substances and why integration is essential for these tools. From a therapists point of view, they tackle common arguments related to touch in therapy, spirituality, and mixing meds with psychedelics. Additionally, Dr. Sapiro shares the profound effects of psychotherapy with psychedelics, aiding individuals in navigating their subconscious while on medication. He discusses the differences in his work with civilians versus first responders and sheds light on the dynamics of chronic stress and its effect on day to day life. Lauren Taus is the fiercest medicine I know of. Truly. Her very being-ness is salve for the soul. Our sisterhood, the way we jam, her phenomenal wisdom, her words, wow wow super wow. Lauren and I share a lot, we have a lot of similar life experiences that allow us to see the world through a similar lens. Witnessing the deaths of our mothers, both of us struggled with anorexia for years, both of us are in the healing space, and we are even born 1 day apart. There is so much juicy goodness in this episode, we talk about inner child work and how to cultivate a more loving relationship with ourselves. We talk about psychedelics and how to use them with reverence. We hone in on grief and loss and moving through them both. I'm so glad you're here and willing to listen, as this episode with Lauren was such a pleasure co-create. If you haven't already, will you take a moment to leave a 5-star review and a written review of this episode, and if it resonates, please share it far and wide. Below you'll find a bit more about Lauren, and be sure to follow her @lauren.taus LET'S GO! Lauren graduated summa cum laude from Barnard College at Columbia University with a BA in Religion before completing her Masters in Social Work at NYU. Lauren focuses on the matrices that hold individuals, rejecting mainstream efforts to pathologize people as if their symptoms could be isolated from their environments. Licensed as a clinical therapist in both New York and California, Lauren believes that life - and good psychotherapy - is psychedelic. She is trained by MAPS (Multidisciplinary Association of Psychedelic Studies), the Ketamine Training Center and in the shamanic realms. Lauren feels honored to partner with plant and compound allies in her work, but will always hold loving relationships as the most important medicine, and the only one we all really need. Lauren's biggest prayer is to wake people up to the magic of life and what they're part of. Lauren understands that the highest form of personal healing contributes to collective liberation. She feels particularly excited to share her work publicly. Lauren is a frequent contributor on stages at psychedelic conferences such as Meet Delic, Wonderland and Trail Blazers. Her work has also been featured in magazines such as Double Blind, New York Magazine, Chacruna, the Guardian, and Forbes. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Today we embark on a profound journey exploring the challenges of parenting a child experiencing Rapid-Onset Gender Dysphoria (ROGD). Alan and I delve into the emotional rollercoaster that parents often experience when their child exhibits signs of ROGD, including stress, pain, and confusion, before embarking on Alan's experience pursuing psychedelic treatment for complex PTSD to alleviate the secondary impact of his trauma symptoms on his family. Alan shares his transformative experience with meditation, the relationship between meditation and spirituality, how spirituality can provide solace and guidance during challenging times, and how meditation can help parents build emotional confidence. We also delve into the connection between psychedelics and meditation in the context of healing and personal growth, Alan shares how insights uncovered during his psychedelic journeys inform how he navigates ROGD parenting. For those interested in this therapeutic path, we provide practical (not medical) advice on using psychedelics safely and effectively, addressing matters of harm reduction, micro dosing and guided journeys, along with important do's and don'ts of set and setting. Drawing parallels between the dynamics of cults and certain aspects of the transgender movement is a crucial part of today's discussion where emotional and psychological traits can make individuals vulnerable to both. This week's episode offers a comprehensive investigation into the challenges parents of ROGD children face, the role of trauma, and the transformative power of meditation and psychedelic therapy. Enlisting the help of his dad, they were determined to create a more affordable option. After countless iterations and improvements, the Plunge was born. A friendship turned into a powerful partnership when Ryan Duey came on board. Michael and Ryan have a common passion for cold plunging, floating, and building win-win relationships. Power Quotes From The Show The Benefits of Ice Baths "From an inflammation standpoint, there are so many benefits of cold plunging after a workout. Also, it gives me so much energy, clears my mind, and makes me feel incredible." - Ryan Duey The Best Workout for the Nervous System "A cold plunge is the best workout for the nervous system. We work out to tear our muscles down and they build back stronger. By getting in the plunge, you're getting outside of your comfort zone, the adrenaline is increasing, and your mind begins to stress but you have the opportunity to completely override and go from a sympathetic state of fight or flight into being in full control of your breath. By doing that cold plunge, you have literally changed your whole body system in 2-3 minutes. Think about what that could mean in everything we do in life; that you are actually in control." - Ryan Duey How Cold Plunging Helps Heal Depression "On a time front, cold plunging is such a short commitment and when you're in a very depressed state, big things seem so unfathomable. If you have this in your house or a river right near you or you take a cold shower, there's a moment where spending time in cold water gives you a window to make a positive shift moving forward. Just spend 2 minutes or even take 10 breaths to help you open up out of your depression and start making the actionable steps when you feel stuck." - Ryan Duey Links From Today's Show Get $150 off your Plunge order with the code 'WELLNESSFORCE' Capitol Floats Temple of the Way of Light MAPS, the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies 210 Brad Burge 410 Mark Divine Wim Hof Dr. Andrew Weil Dr. Rhonda Patrick Dr. Andrew Huberman Dr. Rhonda Patrick on her cold plunge experience Scientific Evidence-Based Effects of Hydrotherapy on Various Systems of the Body The Kaufmann Protocol Vipassana Meditation – A Spartan Race For The Mind John C. He attended Cal Poly University where he spent a semester abroad in Barcelona. The experience was so impactful that after graduation, Ryan returned to Spain and spent the next two years living and working in Madrid. After Madrid, Ryan returned to the states and began working in the front office of the San Jose Earthquakes. Soon after, Ryan had what he calls his “greatest gift”: a head-on motorcycle accident in Thailand. This near death experience catapulted Ryan into a journey of self-inquiry, leading him to the jungles of the Amazon, the inside of a float tank, and a commitment to entrepreneurship in the Health and Wellness industry. While building Capitol Floats, Sacramento's Premier Float Center, Ryan traveled to Reboot Float Spa in the Bay Area with the hopes of meeting the owner, Mike Garrett. The two quickly became friends and business confidants. Now, six years later, Ryan and Mike are taking the next step together and have joined forces to create Plunge. Their mission is to make cold plunging as common as coffee. Ryan couldn't be more grateful and excited to be working alongside such an impressive human and building the team at Plunge.

Dr. Sylver Quevedo and Raghu jam on psychedelic preparation and integration, the MAPS MDMA studies, a Ram Dass ketamine story in India, and how 'love, serve, remember' connects to Indigenous wisdom.“One of the cardinal features that's been learned in the second psychedelic renaissance in the clinical trials has been the importance of two things that were not really understood that well in the 1960s—that is, preparation and integration. By contrast, one of the things that really was discovered early on and articulated very well by Ram Dass and Timothy Leary, was the importance of 'set and setting.' That has survived. It was figured out early on, never went away, and has been rediscovered over and over again.” – Dr. Sylver Quevedo Raghu and Sylver dive into:Taos, New Mexico; the Pueblo people; and the Neem Karoli Baba Ashram in Taos which houses the radiant and emotive Hanuman murti who jumped the ocean from India with Ram Dass and friends back in the day Working with MAPS (The Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies) on their monumental MDMA for PTSD trials Psychedelics and love in the 1960s compared to psychedelics and science in the 2020s Ram Dass giving the "yogi medicine" LSD to his Guru, Neem Karoli Baba (Maharaj-ji) How Ram Dass and Maharaj-ji's lessons of "love, serve, remember" applies to Indigenous wisdom The transformational neural-plasticity and heart-opening properties of tryptamines and phenethylamines A fascinating Ram Dass on ketamine in India story, and Sylver's out-of-body revelation on ketamine"In the 1960s, we were mostly young and naive kids. But on the other hand, the ideals that came through there were real, even if we were misguided and naive about a lot of things like psychedelics. Hey everybody! Episode 113 of the show is out. In this episode, I spoke with my friends Brian James and Adam Aronovich. I met both of them when we all worked together at a big plant medicine center in the Peruvian Amazon. I interviewed both of them separately in previous episodes, Brian in episode 30 and Adam in episode 55, so you can check those out for a more in-depth look at them both. I have been impressed with both their abilities to speak out on more mainstream narratives that are happening in the psychedelic and plant-medicine movements. I think there are many narratives that gain traction and are not often questioned, and I respect both Brian and Adam for their ability to look at issues through different lenses to get closer to a wider truth. Two issues that I think that have been arising in this regard are the psychologizing of the plant-medicine world and the world at large. And the second is the over-emphasis on trauma. While both of these topics have validity and importance and a place in this work, they are but a part, and an over-emphasis on both can be an amputation of sorts of the wider use of plant-medicines and create downstream problems that many don't consider. So it was a real pleasure and a bit of an experiment having this panel. I think it went really well and we went pretty deep on these issues which I think are quite important topics. So I feel confident you all will get a lot out of this episode and the wisdom of Adam and Brian. The rise of psychedelic-assisted therapy marks a new phase in mental health care, but the modality is wrapped up in layers of misinformation and stigma. After Will joined the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies as a study physician, our understanding of psychedelic therapy completely shifted. In this episode, we discuss the impactful results of key clinical trials and what the future of psychedelic therapy looks like based on where we are today, particularly as it relates to FDA approval. We also dig into how psychedelic therapy for couples can open up the possibility for resolving conflict, increasing intimacy and collaboration, and working through challenging topics. As an MDMA therapist, Will has witnessed how the use of psychedelics can lead to life-changing mental health outcomes in patients suffering from PTSD. The process can help people understand the imprints from their childhood in a way that traditional talk therapy often cannot. These patterns tend to show up as attachment styles in adulthood and can provide insight into what's causing friction in our relationships. Not only are we advocates for psychedelic therapy, but we are especially passionate about how we believe it will support awakening inside couples. Additionally, when couples adopt the perspective of taking mutual responsibility for the healing of each other's injuries inside of the “We” together, there's new possibilities to reach new levels of secure attachment, understanding, potency and connection as a couple. If you're in a partnership, our challenge for you this week is to look at the ways that you might be indicating to your partner that you should hold and fix your injuries alone, and vice versa. You may want to have a conversation about where this idea stems from and explore ways to heal together. Rick Doblin, Ph.D., founder and executive director of the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies, joins Lance to discuss the use of psychedelic-assisted therapy to treat PTSD. They also discuss the policies surrounding psychedelics, the future of psychedelic-assisted therapy, and how Rick raised a wolf when he was 21 years old.
“I know it's hard for people to think about holding on if they're in despair, but there's the possibility of healing coming ahead. Don't give up hope,” says Dr. Rick Doblin, who has devoted his career to getting MDMA and other psychedelics approved by the FDA. As you'll hear in this episode of Raise the Line, he could be on the verge of seeing his decades-long dream come true. On the day host Shiv Gaglani spoke to Doblin (January 5, 2023) successful results from a Phase 3 clinical trial of MDMA to treat PTSD were released by the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies – an organization Doblin founded thirty-six years ago. This sets in motion a process that could result in FDA approval of MDMA for this use in 2024. That's very good news for the millions of Americans with PTSD – and hundreds of millions worldwide – whose disease is resistant to other treatments. One of the next big steps is training therapists to incorporate these drugs into their work, something MAPS and other organizations are moving quickly to accomplish. Tune into this fascinating conversation about the political and social factors that have held up legalization of psychedelics for decades, other promising applications of MDMA, what fuels Doblin's passion for normalizing the use of these promising medications, and the largest ever conference on psychedelics coming to Denver, Colorado in June. Mentioned in this episode:https://maps.org/https://psychedelicscience.org/
In 1986, drug activist Rick Doblin founded the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies, commonly known as MAPS, as a non-profit organization specializing in research and education. MAPS has dedicated the last 36 years to changing the way people think of, talk about, and consume psychedelics through research, education, and advocacy. One of MAPS training certifications offers the Psychedelic-Assisted Therapies and Research Certificate Program for skilled therapists and researchers. Today's guest, Andrea Hanson, is one of those MAPS certified therapists able to provide psychedelic assisted therapy. Here is quick clarification. MAPS uses the term "psychedelic" to refer to both the classic psychedelics (LSD, psilocybin, peyote, ayahuasca, etc.) and to those drugs specifically termed "entactogens" and also known as "empathogens" (MDMA, MDA, etc.). Andrea is a licensed mental health professional, and I loved our conversation. I always want to present alternatives to consider for a holistic approach to wellness and healing and this is a good point to remind the audience that I am not a doctor, healthcare practitioner or therapist. What I share in today's episodes are some of my personal experiences and opinions around psychedelics. Andrea and I talk about the MAPS certification process, psychedelic assisted therapy using MDMA, psilocybin, and ketamine, the benefits of recreational, the concerns of therapeutic misuse, and the importance of integration. Andrea has her Masters of educational psychology in clinical mental health counseling and is a Neurobiological Breakthrough Specialist, Psychedelic Breakthrough. Complex Trauma and Addiction Expert. Her career and personal commitment has been reshaping the psychiatric and mental health fields. Connect with Andrea: AndreaHanson.net Be a part of this podcast! When you look at the world, it can feel like we're in a precarious moment. If you've listened to past episodes, you know we call this the meta-crisis — an era of overlapping and interconnected crises like climate change, polarization, and the rise of decentralized technologies like synthetic biology. It can feel like we're on a path to destroy ourselves. That's why we're talking to Rick Doblin, the founder and executive director of the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies, or MAPS. They're a nonprofit focused on educating and researching the benefits of using psychedelic therapy to address PTSD and promote humane ways of relating worldwide.Doblin's vision is for nothing less than a transformation of society through psychedelic-assisted therapy – not for the drugs themselves, but for their ability to help us react to one another with compassion, appreciate differences, and accept criticism.Given the perma-crisis we face, it's provocative to think about a tool that, when prescribed and used safely, could help us overcome rivalrous dynamics out in the world and on social media. If we rescue our hijacked brains, we can heal from the constant trauma inflation we get online, and shrink the perception gap that splits us into tribes. Both MAPS and Center for Humane Technology want to understand what helps minds heal and be free. We invite you to keep an open mind about a different kind of humane technology as you listen to this episode. Correction: Doblin attributes a quote to Stan Grof about psychedelics helping your ego be “transparent to the transcendent.” In his book Pathways to Bliss, Joseph Campbell wrote, "When a deity serves as a model for you, your life becomes transparent to the transcendent as long as you realize the inspiring power of that deity. This means living not in the name of worldly success and achievement, but rather in the name of the transcendent, letting the energy manifest through you.” Grof was likely paraphrasing Campbell's work and applying it to psychedelics. In this episode of the Plant Medicine Podcast, Adam Aronovich returns to discuss the phenomenon of psychedelic narcissism. Adam is a doctoral candidate at the Universitat Rovira i Virgili in Spain, focusing on Medical Anthropology and Cultural Psychiatry. He is an active member of the Medical Anthropology Research Center (MARC) and part of the Ayahuasca Community Committee at the Chacruna Institute for Psychedelic Plant Medicines. In the last four years he has conducted extensive fieldwork in the Peruvian Amazon, where he has been doing qualitative research in collaboration with ICEERS, the Beckley Foundation, and, more recently, the Centre for Psychedelic Studies at Imperial College. Beyond his work conducting and coordinating research, Adam regularly facilitates workshops at the Temple of the Way of Light, a prestigious healing center in the Iquitos area. In this wide-ranging conversation, Adam unpacks some of the darker sides of the modern psychedelic movement, discussing the psychosocial dynamics around psychedelic use which can lead to things such as ego inflation, conspiratorial thinking, and narcissism. Adam recalls his own experiences slipping into messianic fantasies during a period of initial enthusiasm around psychedelic experiences. He views issues of alienation and lack of social support as being instrumental in leading to these types of delusions following profound spiritual experiences. While it is difficult to reach people who've slipped into psychedelic narcissism, Adam suggests that communal support is the best safeguard against these dangers and the most effective strategy for grounding people who've lost touch with reality. Drawing on his academic expertise, Adam distinguishes traditional uses of plant medicines from the Western paradigm for approaching psychedelics. He stresses the relational and communal aspects of the spiritual traditions which use psychedelics ceremonially. The pro-social aspects of these wisdom traditions, he claims, help safeguard against the traps of psychedelic narcissism and ego inflation, as there are established mechanisms for keeping people grounded following intense spiritual experiences. Adam closes the discussion with an insightful analysis of modern gurus and self-proclaimed shamans. Adam encourages people to beware of deeply held spiritual fantasies, where a master can appear as more than human. Instead, he emphasizes that even skillful and well-intentioned healers are themselves nothing more than human beings, so there will always be imperfection and messiness. This does not, however, mean that impactful work cannot happen—in fact, this insight helps protect against the idolization of charismatic psychedelic personalities, which can lead to harmful experiences. In this episode: Defining psychedelic narcissism Clinical vs colloquial understandings of narcissism The intersections of the psychedelic movement and conspiracy theories The importance of social and communal support for avoiding ego inflation following psychedelic or spiritual experiences How psychedelic experiences can actually deepen ego attachments and accentuate narcissistic tendencies The importance of humor in combating spiritual narcissism Quotes: “Many of the underlying ideologies upon which Western cultures were built, like hyper-individualism and so on, kind of predispose us and prime us for certain aspects of narcissism.” [5:36] “Ego inflation, spiritual narcissism, messianic episodes—all of these are things that are fairly common within both people who are in some sort of spiritual or psychedelic path.” [12:17] “In traditional societies for the most part really there isn't such a thing as a self-proclaimed shaman. A person doesn't wake up one morning and is like ‘oh, I'm the shaman'—that's a title or a role or a recognition given to that person by the community.” [38:03] “The best measure of whether somebody is genuine and helpful is not whatever credentials or titles he assigns to himself, but rather what other people feel. So, you know, you will know a tree by its fruits.” [45:08] “Having these experiences by themselves does not necessarily mean spiritual growth or psychological development or any enhanced benefit if we're not constantly, painfully, mindful of how we actually integrate and embody those things in daily life over very long periods of time.” [54:29] Links: Adam on Instagram Temple of the Way of Light Psychedelic Medicine Association Porangui
