Their work on humanitarian AI is focused on collective crisis intelligence technologies. These are tools that combine localized collective intelligence from affected communities and frontline responders, and AI. Since 2021, they have pioneered participatory AI methodologies that bring affected communities and frontline responders into the designing, testing and oversight of AI systems. Their research is funded by a grant from the UK Humanitarian Innovation Hub (UKHIH). Keep an eye out for a forthcoming Humanitarian AI Today episode that will dive deeper into Aleks' work on participatory AI and the responsible deployment of humanitarian AI technologies.

Lots happening this week in WRTW Land (which is about 25.6km away from Barbie Land). March is Women's History Month. March 8th is International Women's Day. Marilyn and Rhea both finally watched Barbie (yes, THAT Barbie, which is up for some Oscars later this week). They also just finished watching season 2 of the hit Netflix show AlRawabi School for Girls. They have so many thoughts on all of the above (especially Rhea)...but can they share them all in one episode? Well folks, they do it, because they are what? Women. International women. In this episode of Who Run the Time, Marilyn and Rhea put on their “scathing critic” hats and break down the nonsense, western origins of International Women's Day. They then look at how Barbie and AlRawabi fit this year's IWD theme, “Inspire Inclusion,” and share examples of comedians, journalists, and authors who they feel do a good job of telling authentic stories representing women today. Live from Casa Home de Ken (sic), it's WRTW's International Women's Day episode!Marilyn's recommendations:“An Unlasting Home” by Mai Al-Nakib.“Celestial Bodies” by Jokha Alharthi.“Against a Loveless World” by Susan Abulhawa.“The Day Nina Simone Stopped Singing” by Darina Al Joundi.Rhea's recommendations:Lebanese comedian Shaden.Jordanian journalist Sara Obeidat. When a horrific explosion happened in Beirut, Dalal Mawad was living nearby and felt a compelling urge to help. As a journalist she naturally searched for ways to tell the story. But what was the story? The explosion happened against the backdrop of inhumane conditions in the Middle East, a collapsing infrastructure in her country, Lebanon, and an unclear picture of what led to the terrible event. In the end, Dalal chose the tell the story through the experiences of the women affected by it; women who tried to help, women who were injured, women who lost loved ones. Through their stories and her exacting research and knowledge, we are invited into the experience of that day. Because she includes her own story, we are immersed in the dilemma faced by journalist who are are personally affected by the events they cover. In her book, All She Lost, Dalal chooses to reflect it all; her own story (which led to her moving away from the country she loves), her knowledge as a journalist who has covered the Middle East for many years, and the stories of the women who survived that day.
