Yes God Yes: Unpacking Biblical Sexology Part 5 (More of the Sexually Obedient Wife)

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 17, 2024 45:09

Have you ever wondered what a religion rooted in puritanism, that fully embodies purity culture and modesty, really believes about sex and sexuality? Have you ever struggled to link the "premarital sex is sin" belief to the "married sex is awesome" one? Biblical sexology just might be the key. Coined by the anonymous (yet all too familiar) Larry Solomon, the idea of biblical sexology is rooted in misogynistic gender roles and ideas about the interactions between married men and women. It also creates a loophole for Evangelicals to openly enjoy sex, which leads to some pretty interesting beliefs, statements, and conclusions. In Part 5, we are once again discussing Larry “Geriatric Incel” Solomon's idea of what makes a good wife, at least within the context of the couple's sex life. Larry has big opinions about how, when, and where women should make themselves available to their husbands—and the sacrifices women should willingly make in order to satisfy their husbands' sexual whims. And if a woman has the apparent audacity to exercise her bodily autonomy and control over her own body and time? Well, that's a sin that shows disobedience—and, by extension, disloyalty—not only to her husband but to God himself. Get ready to rage a little with me, because in this one, Larry takes encouragement from another (allegedly) very real woman who has implemented his teachings... and uses it to challenge wives everywhere to do the same! Naming our Trauma: A Casual Conversation on Millennial Exvangelical Mental Health

Today we are taking a break from Biblical Sexology to talk about something I've been thinking about for awhile now. Why is it so hard for millennials, especially those of us who grew up in Evangelical Christianity, to unpack, process, and name our trauma? Admittedly, this episode was sparked by the current Colleen Ballinger drama. Her younger, Gen Z victims have been able to call her out with a level of clarity and conviction that is both admirable and inspiring. I didn't have those words when I was younger, and as an adult I am still trying to figure out what to call what happened to me and my subsequent mental health issues. Is it simply getting easier to call a spade a spade? Is the horrifically damaging stigma surrounding mental health issues going away? Or were those of us who grew up in specific cultures at a specific time just unlucky? I think it's a combination of factors, and I want to start discussing it.  This is by no means a conversation with solutions, conclusions, or answers. This isn't a deep dive. This is a casual, frank conversation about how we name our trauma, identify ourselves, and find healing, even when it's difficult.  CONTENT WARNING: discussions about mental health, trauma, grooming behavior, death, suicide, etc. Please tread lightly and put your safety and wellbeing first. “The Collapse of Colleen Ballinger”, Paige Christie (part one of a two-part series) YouTuber Colleen Ballinger Denies Allegations She 'Groomed' Fans After HuffPost Investigation, Paige Skinner  The Evangelical Church's Problem with Mental Health (A Missionary Kid's Perspective), A.B. WAP certainly garnered an interesting response. While clearly not for everyone, the lyrics nonetheless conveyed an empowered, experienced version of female sexuality that we don't often see in mainstream media. Adding to the conversation surrounding this song two years after it was released might feel late, irrelevant, or pointless. However, viewing the song, and what it represents, through the lens of the Christian Right's response to it feels as topical as ever, especially when you realize that this response is symptomatic of the ways in which this culture views women and sexuality, as well as the creation and consumption of media. In this episode we are examining these views through one pop culture commentator's response to WAP, a response that I believe is representative of Evangelical Christian culture's as a whole… and indicative of not only how these people feel about female empowerment and sexuality, but how they feel about the female body and women in general. Spoiler alert, like so many other things that are “of the world”, this culture sees WAP, and the sexually empowered woman the song represents, and a targeted attack on their religion and beliefs. This is the third and final (for now) part of our deep dive into the myth of Christian persecution in this country, and today we are looking at the tragic story of a young man who was inexplicably willing and eager to die for his faith. After his death, he was turned into a martyr by many people in Evangelical Christian culture—people ready to hold him up as an example of how selfless, faithful, and dedicated we should all be in the name of sharing the gospel. But was John Chau a selfless saint? Was he a victim of a religion that brainwashes young people to be so “on fire for god” that their own lives here on earth become an afterthought? Or was he obstinate and foolishly naive, hell-bent on following through on what he believed to be a god-given directive? As with everything else we've covered, there is no easy answer here. We'll end the episode—and the series—on a much more lighthearted note with a brief discussion of Logan Dorn, dubbed the Christian Male Karen, whose own god-given directive was apparently... harassing teens for wearing swimsuits at the beach. The story shocked the world, and was weaponized and used at every turn as supposed proof of the growing danger that Christians are in because of their faith. If you guessed they're all connected to the music video for one of the most popular Christian alternative songs of the 90s, you'd be correct! Today we are starting a two-part arc on martyrdom porn and the myth of Christian persecution in the United States. In Part 1, we will explore this phenomenon specifically through the lens of DC Talk's Jesus Freak. The concept of the Jesus Freak is something that all Evangelicals are familiar with, especially if you lived through the 90s. It's nothing new, though—the idea of Christians suffering for Christ has its basis in the Bible, but the way this idea has been morphed to mythological heights is truly fascinating. Jesus Freak didn't plant the seed but it definitely threw fuel on the fire, a fire that transcended religion and took over popular culture and politics and only continues to grow. It is truly amazing how a religious group, so enmeshed in politics in this country that they have become synonymous with one of our two political parties, believes they are the victim. Jesus was a cult leader and the death cult lives on! In this episode I take a quick look at what Easter means to Evangelical Christians, and the historical context it is based on. That's… pretty much it. Author's note: at one point I say that Evangelicals don't celebrate Lent—I should not have made such a black and white statement, because that isn't entirely true. Some denominations that fall within the “Evangelical” category do, and some participants of the religion, regardless of denomination, do. It just isn't as prevalent as it is in other religions. Previously, we talked about how Evangelical Christianity's guidelines and restrictions surrounding sex, love, and dating can be overwhelming, challenging, and damaging to young people navigating these practices within the culture. In a continuation of that conversation, we are looking at how adults in Evangelical Christianity approach these practices. Spoiler alert: it's very similar to how teens and young adults are taught to approach them! Why is that? So many things come into play here. In this episode we are looking at dating practices that affect “older” people, as well as a few trends, beliefs, and attitudes that add to the challenges inherent in romantic relationships in Evangelical Christianity. Join me for the first meeting of the Runaway Eve Book Club! We're taking a deep dive into the infamous "I Kissed Dating Goodbye", written by Evangelical darling of the 90s Joshua Harris. Yes, he's since renounced the book. Yes, he's since "apologized". But, as they say... "there is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known". (It's the Bible. The Bible says that.) So we're taking Josh to task and discussing the ways he upheld and solidified the damaging and dangerous beliefs inherent to Christian dating and courtship, and holding him accountable for the ways this book has reverberated through many of our lives. If you want to read along, I would suggest using Daddy G to search for a free pdf copy, which is what I did. Evangelical Christianity has some very specific guidelines when it comes to sex, love, and dating. While many people do understandably take comfort in these restrictions, feeling forced to experience romantic relationships in one specific way can be overwhelming at best, and damaging and dangerous at worst. In this episode we will take a look at what the Evangelical concept of courtship is, how it functions in the culture, its biblical roots, and why I think it can be so dangerous when it's weaponized against young people. Happy new year! I'm kicking off season two with a conversation about the Evangelical Christian concept of original sin—where it comes from, what it means, why I think it can be so damaging to those growing up in the faith… and how I think, to an extent, they kind of have a point. The idea for this episode came from an interesting Twitter thread and an even more interesting response from Evangelicals who, of course, took the opportunity to use the conversation (and reactions and responses to it) as "proof" of their very real and not at all imaginary "persecution". I share a couple moments from my own childhood, how I've grown, and where I'm at now with regard to this idea. I hope this episode encourages you to reframe the way you approach your relationship with your children, humans at large, and, maybe most importantly, yourself. Many were shocked when it was revealed that husband, father of many children, and TLC darling Josh Duggar had accessed violently inappropriate pornographic materials at his workplace. The shock continued when he was formally charged with said crimes. I say that “many” were shocked, because… well, Josh had already exhibited a pattern of predation, and those around him had already established their own pattern of protecting him from any sort of consequences or real accountability. Some of us weren't shocked at all. Religious men are often protected, often don't face consequences, and often aren't held accountable beyond asking for forgiveness. So what has Josh and his legal team been up to since the charges were leveled against him? Spoiler alert: nobody actually seems to be arguing his innocence. No, it actually seems his legal team, just like his parents and everyone in his circle years before, are trying to help him get away with what he did.
