In this week's episode, Bridgett speaks with Danni Adams—CO-CREATOR of the Institute for Body Image Coaching, speaker, and advocate for fat Black women—to unpack the deep connections between beauty standards, race, social justice, and self-worth. From navigating microaggressions to confronting healthcare bias, Danni shares her journey of reimagining beauty and building community. They discuss how historical narratives still shape body image today, the influence of social media on youth, and why representation is critical for healing and growth. Bridgett and Danni's conversation reminds us that self-love isn't linear—it's an act of resistance, presence, and power. You can find Danni on Instagram and by visiting her website! Key Takeaways:Microaggressions are a daily reality for marginalized bodies.Healthcare systems often perpetuate weight stigma and bias against larger bodies.Young people are heavily influenced by social media beauty standards.Creating offline spaces for youth can help normalize body acceptance.Historical beauty standards continue to shape societal perceptions today. Helping people reimagine beauty is essential.Self-love is a continuous journey, not a destination.Feeling emotions is crucial for healing.Representation in media is currently lacking.Progress in body positivity is mixed with regression.Personal experiences shape our understanding of beauty.Navigating body shame requires vulnerability and honesty.Subscribe to the newsletter: https://beyondbeautyproject.myflodesk.com/newsletter Learn about Keynotes & Workshops: https://www.beyondbeautyproject.com/workwithme For more, you can follow Beyond Beauty Project on Instagram, YouTube, and visit our website!Produced by Peoples Media Hosted on Acast. ‘Tall girls just aren't that pretty.'That's how we're made to feel or even what we're told growing up by our crush, our peers, even family and friends, and strangers. And it's not a one-and-done thing. In fact, it's recurring. We hear and feel this often enough for us to wonder: Does everyone have the same viewpoint of tall women? That we're these ‘big', awkward skyscrapers? Why? Why is this the case? I got 3 words for ya: Societal beauty standards. This is explained in a piece written in the Minnesota Daily by Sidney Clarke, who says, “height has been inextricably associated with a lack of conventional beauty.” Why is this the case? And how can we overcome this?Well, that's what today's episode is all about! In this powerful episode of The Anxiety Chicks, Alison and Taylor open up about the emotional journey of aging—particularly from a woman's perspective. From the pressure to look a certain way to the silent grief of unmet expectations, they get real about what it means to grow older in a society that glorifies youth. The conversation explores the internal shifts that come with milestone birthdays like 30 or 40, the emotional weight of becoming a caregiver to aging parents, and the strength that can be found in the middle of life's most tender transitions. Whether you're navigating body image, grieving what never was, or learning to love who you're becoming—this episode is a reminder that aging is not a curse, but a privilege.
In this thought-provoking episode, the first ever America's Next Top Model winner Adrianne Curry joins host Josie to delve into the complex and often controversial world of women's beauty standards. Together, they explore the societal pressures, media influences, and cultural norms that shape how women are expected to look. As they discuss personal experiences and broader societal trends, they ask the tough question: Who's to blame for these ever-evolving ideals? Tune in for a candid conversation on the challenges women face in navigating beauty expectations and the impact of these standards on self-image and confidence.

Every woman has something that's tearing away at her esteem —a part they wish they could change. Many of us struggle with internal battles, feeling defined by societal perceptions of beauty or worth. In his message, The Noblewoman Era, Dr. Gabe draws from the biblical story of Leah and Rachel, illustrating how societal and internal pressures can shape—even skew—our self-worth. Leah, often overshadowed by Rachel's beauty, teaches us that our perceived imperfections do not define our potential.Support the showText encounteratl to 94000 to stay up-to-date on all things Encounter.Worship with EncounterSundays at 9 AM ET | Wednesdays at 7:30 PM ETSupport EncounterText egive to 77977 Connect with EncounterFacebook | Instagram | TikTok | YouTube | WebsiteConnect with Dr. GabeInstagram | YouTube | Website

What is the world's definition of beauty? How often have we squeezed, strived, and starved ourselves in order to meet its impossible standards, only to feel we're never enough? Today's podcast is Part 1 of a two-part series on Dreaming with God, where Stasi shares God's invitation to see ourselves through His eyes—to trade striving for rest, shame for grace, and the enemy's lies for God's Truth. God not only calls us beautiful (SoS 1:15), but He also invites us to walk in union with Him, partnering with Him in the joy of becoming who He has created us to be and offering what He has uniquely planted in our hearts.…..SHOW NOTES:…..VERSES: Song of Songs 4:1 (NLT) – You are beautiful, my darling, beautiful beyond words. Your eyes are like doves …2 Corinthians 3:18 (NLT) – So all of us who have had that veil removed can see and reflect the glory of the Lord. And the Lord – who is the Spirit – makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image.John 15:5 (NLT) – Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing.1 Thessalonians 5:24 (NIV) – The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do it.Matthew 22:39 (NLT) – … ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.'…..RESOURCESBecoming Myself: Embracing God's Dream of You by Stasi Eldredge https://amzn.to/4gYrsZyQuote: “Today you are you. From nose jobs to fox-eye lifts, cosmetic procedures have never felt more accessible—or more tempting. Thanks to social media, we’re no longer just seeing the before and afters. We're watching it all unfold: pre-op consults, the surgery chair, the bruises, the swelling, the recovery. But is this behind-the-scenes access empowering, or is it just another kind of beauty pressure dressed up as transparency? We get into it in this week's Uncensored episode. Plus, we help a listener build the ultimate $100 barrier repair cart for dehydrated, acne-prone skin—affordable and effective picks only. And finally, Hannah confesses to dropping $140 on a very bougie bin (yes, a bin), and shares the other fancy things she’s picked up for her new home. Gray hairs with attitude, body image trolls, and the absurd pressure to look perfect—yeah, we're going there today. In this episode, we were having a casual, off-line conversation about beauty, aging, and societal pressures when we thought — hey, this is too good not to share! Inspired by Nelly Furtado's candid post on body neutrality, we dive into the absurdity of beauty standards. From tweezing gray hairs to handling unsolicited advice about makeup, we explore the unrelenting pressure women face to “look the part” at every age. Spoiler alert: even people in the pictures don't look like that! Even though we don't live in a society that celebrates aging, it's not all heavy—we keep it real and funny as we tackle topics like diet culture, body criticism, and how women often unintentionally reinforce these unrealistic ideals. We also dish out three actionable ways to break the cycle and show up for each other with love, not judgment. In this episode: Nelly Furtado's refreshing take on body neutrality Maria's war with her gray hairs (and why they seem to have superpowers) How social media magnifies beauty pressure (and makes us overthink everything) Tara's take on bodybuilders who peak for just three hours and still dominate Instagram The subtle ways we bash ourselves (and how to STOP IT) This episode is brought to you by the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra. In this thought-provoking discussion, we delve into the complex topic of beauty standards and self-presentation from a Christian perspective. While no specific scripture is directly cited, the conversation echoes themes from 1 Peter 3:3-4, which reminds us that true beauty comes from within. We explore the delicate balance between taking care of our outward appearance and nurturing our inner selves. The dialogue challenges us to consider: Are we presenting ourselves authentically, or are we playing a character? This connects to the broader spiritual journey of discovering our true identity in Christ. As we navigate societal expectations and personal convictions, we're encouraged to seek wisdom in how we present ourselves, always remembering that our primary goal is to glorify God. This message invites us to reflect on our motivations and to cultivate a heart that values inner beauty while being mindful of how we represent our faith to the world. -- Have a question about relationships? We're at the start of award season, so it's a perfect time to continue exploring MASKulinity on TV. This week, Samantha and Remoy walk each other through popular shows they've watched and ask, How are men and masculinity represented in these shows? Are they challenging the norm of MASKulinity or reinforcing it?Samantha starts off with a nod to Golden Globe-nominated Nobody Wants This for its evolved masculinity moments. Adam Brody has been in his nurturing masculinity bag since the early 2000s and we're here for it! She then winds our TVs back to the late ‘90s for a look at a breakthrough TV show at the time: Sex and The City.Remoy questions focusing on men while talking about a show that centers women. At any other time, Samantha would agree, butcher contends that it is helpful to see how women can perpetuate patriarchy. What are men like in a TV show that entirely focuses on the dating and sex lives of attractive women? Samantha reflects back on the different love interests in the show and how their viability as a partner was measured.Carrie's main love interests, Mr. Big and Aidan, embodied two different sides of the coin that is traditional masculinity. Neither challenge patriarchal norms, still, it's worth asking: Why would an emotionally unavailable tycoon be a better suited partner than a nurturing provider? Short answer: patriarchal tropes. Long answer: Nice guys finish last in the patriarchy, and SATC is no different.Remoy acknowledges his own past as a Mr. Big type, proving that emotional unavailability doesn't have to be lifelong!Remoy didn't regret missing the show, but he couldn't help but wonder, Do these stereotypical dating situations on TV inform our real dating lives or is it the other way around? Patriarchy didn't just impact dating in SATC. Casual homophobia, racism, and transphobia were peppered throughout the show. The two call out that SATC touted itself as a feminist show, but only explored well-to-do, slim white women's dating and sex lives. Everyone else does feel othered including men, who are one-dimensional and just meant to be chosen.Samantha admits why she continued to watch the show despite all these tropes. She reflects on her younger self's patriarchal leanings. There were good things about SATC. While missing clear opportunities to be inclusive and well-rounded in their depictions of dating life in New York City, Where the characters in the MASK On, MASK Off game from our “TV Dads” episode grappled with masculinity, SATC sticks to traditional expectations of masculinity by condensing male characters into three types. [13:00] Do you agree? Let us know!Samantha ends her story with a quick note on the SATC reboot, And Just Like That.People have been vocal about how the show is forcibly inclusive.Samantha shares some examples and opines on how evolved the reboot is compared to the old show. What your verdict? Has this franchise evolved? Holler at us! @ maskulinitypodRemoy takes the mic and picks up where he left off with his new favorite show, Shrinking. In Shrinking, men, and characters in general, are imparted with nuance and humanity that was clearly missing from SATC's supporting characters.Remoy maintains his fave was snubbed at the Golden Globes and attempts to foster appreciation in Samantha for his new show.He shares a few clips from the show and lets Samantha ask clarifying questions about the show.Cue in intergenerational friendships, community problem-solving, open communication with teenage children, and healthy grey-area relationships between men and women.Shrinking does what And Just Like That attempted to do but in a realistic and relatable manner.Changing neighborhood dynamics leads folks to call out racist behavior, rather than yearning for the past. Remoy breaks down how characters deal with grief and changing dynamics in their lives.Samantha immediately takes to Derek and Remoy gives her the lowdown. In this ensemble cast, there are various folks support each other. The relationship between father and daughter is quite moving.Remoy gives praise to the writing of the show gracefully weaving themesReferenced on this episode:Our episode on TV DadsThe paper that informed Samantha's gamifying of TV dads?
