This week, Scott sat down with a particularly baritone cast of Lawfare colleagues—co-host emeritus Benjamin Wittes, Foreign Policy Editor Dana Stuster, and Senior Editor (aka Legal Correspondent) Roger Parloff—to discuss the week's biggest national security news stories, including:“Let's Sheikh On It.” President Trump completed a surprisingly historic trip to the Persian Gulf last week, which began with the type of fanfare that Trump loves and only Saudi Arabia can provide and ended with the controversial gift of a new Air Force One from Qatar at the president's reported request. In between, however, Trump reiterated his calls for an end to the Gaza conflict, became directly involved in negotiating the release of the last living American-Israeli hostage from Hamas, and announced a dramatic about-face in U.S. sanctions policy toward the new regime in Syria that caught even his closest advisers by surprise—all measures that are unlikely to be greeted warmly by the man who has traditionally been Trump's closest regional ally, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. How big a pivot point was Trump's trip? And what could its implications be for U.S. policy towards the region?“Not Retiring from a Fight.” The Supreme Court issued an unprecedented third opinion off its emergency docket this past week in the inaptly named A.A.R.P. v. Trump, part of the ongoing litigation over the Trump administration's controversial efforts to remove Venezuelan nationals under the Alien Enemies Act. In a 7-2 ruling, the Court held that the summary notice and opportunity to challenge that U.S. officials had provided to some individuals prior to their removal was inadequate. But as litigation through the lower courts continues, what impact is this holding likely to have on the administration's broader immigration policies?“Shell Shocked.” Former FBI Director James Comey found himself at the center of an unlikely controversy this week, when his decision to relay a photo of shells arranged to form the numbers “8647” that he reportedly found on the beach was interpreted as a death threat against President Trump, triggering a Secret Service interview and potentially more legal consequences to come. How seriously should this incident be taken? And what does it tell us about the Trump administration's use of prosecutorial discretion? In Object Lessons, as white smoke rose over the Vatican, Roger also turned his gaze heavenward—diving into Benjamin Blech and Roy Doliner's “The Sistine Secrets” to uncover the subtexts Michelangelo left behind. Inspired by the same papal events, Scott turned to Conclave for a peek inside the process. Ben planted seeds of solidarity and resilience (or was that resistance?) across from the Russian embassy. And Dana's incoming students at Franklin and Marshall College are about to share in his appreciation for Osamu Dazai's “The Setting Sun.”To receive ad-free podcasts, become a Lawfare Material Supporter at www.patreon.com/lawfare. Groomed for power from childhood, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi was more than a prince. He was Reza Shah's guarantee for a successful political project. The post Book Two – Ep.8: The Heir appeared first on The Lion and The Sun Podcast.
In this revealing episode of Unlock U with Dr. Shannan Crawford, we dive deep into the often‐hidden dynamics of narcissistic grooming—from a psychoanalytic lens—and uncover how early relationship templates can leave us especially vulnerable. You'll learn how to spot the red flags, understand the unconscious roots, and put practical safeguards in place. What Is Narcissistic Grooming? Definition: A gradual process by which someone with narcissistic traits gains your trust, isolates you, and then exploits your emotions and boundaries for their own validation and control. Often including intense amounts of verbal praise "Idealizing you", in which they give you signifiant amounts of attention, time, gifts, acts of service, and praise that, many people have described as, "intoxicating." Some have described that "it almost felt like he adored me so much and so suddenly that it was overwhelming. It was so flattering that I ignored all red flags because the life he described we would have was exhilarating! He sent huge flower arrangements and flashy expensive gifts to me at work so my coworkers could see it. He messaged me multiple times a day with the most amazing complements and telling me everything I always wanted to hear. He came into my life, so strong and so fast... he literally came out of nowhere and now, boom, this amazing man is telling me he wants to marry me and take me around the world and I would never need to work again because he wants to spoil me! I was so enraptured that I didn't notice that his current life didn't match up to the fantasies he was creating in my mind of how our life would be..." Another woman says, "He convinced me that he loved me so much that he couldn't be without me... I didn't notice that he was starting to isolate me... I had to give up friends and family who did not fully "support" our relationship. I was so overwhelmed by the intensity of his attention and praise, that I started to subtly build my life around him... eventually I lost my other relationships... By the time he discarded me, I was COMPLETELY alone." Can you resonate? Psychoanalytic Perspective: Splitting & Idealization/Devaluation: Narcissists first “idealize” you as perfect, then “devalue” you once they feel threatened. Projective Identification: They project their own unacceptable feelings onto you, making you feel responsible for their emotions. Object Relations Roots: Early caregivers who were inconsistent or overly enmeshed can leave you craving approval and slow to see manipulation. Why Some of Us Are More Susceptible Drawing on the Restoring‑Self‑Cohesion (RSC) model, Dr. Crawford explains how unconscious templates from childhood shape our adult relationships: Caretaker Role: You learned to put others' emotional needs first to feel safe or worthy. People‑Pleaser Template: Seeking external validation became your primary way to soothe childhood anxieties. Rescuer Script: You believe “fixing” others proves your value—making you an easy target for someone who preys on empathy. Unconscious Sabotage Loops: Old patterns pull you back into dynamics where your boundaries blur and your self‑worth hinges on pleasing someone else. Practical Safeguards to Protect Yourself Strengthen Your Boundaries Practice saying “no” and notice your discomfort. Use “I” statements to express needs: “I feel… when you…” Build an Early‑Warning System Keep a journal of interactions that feel off—look for patterns of praise turning into blame. Share concerns with a trusted friend or therapist to get an outside perspective. Cultivate Healthy “Mirror” Relationships Surround yourself with people who reflect empathy, consistency, and genuine care. Schedule regular check‑ins with your support circle. Deepen Self‑Awareness with RSC Tools Identify your primary relationship template and notice when you slip into old roles. Use grounding rituals (breathwork, journaling, somatic check‑ins) to stay connected to your own needs. Build Community Be honest with your friends and family. Try not to sugar coat the relationship. A healthy relationship can withstand reality testing. When you're early on in a relationship, you're infatuated which means you're literally not thinking clearly. In episode 747: Hatman the Soul Hunter, Chad Phillippi shares his chilling journey from childhood occultism to a full-blown spiritual battle in the Alaskan wilderness. Groomed into astral projection and candle magick by a potentially nefarious librarian, Chad opened doors he couldn't close—doors that followed him into adulthood. After fleeing toxic mold in Washington, his family moved to what they believed would be a healing refuge in Alaska. Instead, they found a house stalked by shadow figures, a red-eyed Hat Man, and a little ghost girl who called out in the night. As the spiritual attacks escalated—golem-like creatures, spectral stagecoaches, and visions of the dead—the family was pushed to the brink. With the help of a spiritual warfare mentor, they buried Bibles, anointed the land, and drove out the presence. But when a buried camper with hair on its window was uncovered and reburied, the darkness returned with force. Forced to flee through a coming storm, they left everything behind. Because this wasn't just a haunting, it was a trap. And someone, or something, didn't want them to make it out. Seasoned psychotherapist Carol Odell joins us to discuss her new memoir “Girl, Groomed: A Therapist's Memoir of Trauma” (She Writes Press, April 22, 2025), an unflinching exploration of her journey to confront and heal from the complex trauma of childhood sexual abuse within the world of Virginia's equestrian show-jumping circuit. Raw and riveting, “Girl, Groomed” is an evolving story of coming to terms with the impacts of Odell's own history of sexual abuse and violence at the hands of a predatory horse trainer who, for far too much of her young life, held all the reins. Set in the equestrian world of Virginia, this candid memoir details how, starting at ten years old, Carol falls under the spell of Clarentine, the charismatic—and explosively violent—owner of the stables just down the hill from her house. In tandem with that story, Carol examines the multi-faceted consequences of the complex trauma that resulted from the exploitative relationship Clarentine cultivated with her - including the resulting crisis she blindly imposes on her marriage. Chapters toggle back and forth between scenes of her childhood growing up jumping horses on the show circuit and the therapy sessions she later undergoes as an adult. Using her own journey as an example, Carol demonstrates in this insightful memoir how unintegrated trauma limits us and our connection with others—and how the work of uncovering and reintegrating “what we do with what happens to us” can become the very source of our liberation.

Some stories demand to be told—not just for the sake of the storyteller, but for the change they can spark. Today's guest, Sonia Orchard, is an award-winning author whose latest book, Groomed, is a raw and powerful memoir about facing past trauma, navigating a justice system stacked against victims, and asking the bigger question: how do we fix this?Written in real time as she took her own case to court, Groomed unpacks the cultural, neurological, and evolutionary forces that enable abuse to persist. Sonia brings a sharp intellect and deep compassion to this conversation, drawing on her diverse background in music, literature, environmental science, and creative writing. In this episode, we discuss the difficult but necessary work of confronting the past, the systemic obstacles that survivors face, and what real justice could look like. It's an eye-opening conversation that challenges the way we think about power, accountability, and change. Sonia is the author of four books, find her latest here. In 2019, she founded the Mountain Writers Festival, Australia's first writers' festival to focus exclusively on the environment. Johanna Sjoberg, a former student at Palm Beach Atlantic College, provided a deposition detailing her recruitment by Ghislaine Maxwell to work for Jeffrey Epstein. Initially hired under the pretense of assisting with household chores, Sjoberg was later coerced into providing sexualized massages to Epstein. She recounted an incident at Epstein's Manhattan residence around Easter 2001, where Prince Andrew, using a puppet resembling himself, allegedly groped her and another young woman, Virginia Giuffre. Sjoberg's testimony also mentioned encounters with other prominent individuals within Epstein's circle, including meeting Michael Jackson at Epstein's Palm Beach home, though she noted no inappropriate behavior from Jackson.Sjoberg's deposition further revealed that Epstein boasted about his connections with influential figures, including former President Bill Clinton. She recalled Epstein remarking that "Clinton likes them young," implying a preference for younger women. However, there is no evidence to suggest that Clinton engaged in any illegal activities related to Epstein. Sjoberg's accounts have been instrumental in shedding light on the operations of Epstein and Maxwell, highlighting the manipulation and exploitation of young women within their network.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.com
