Dave Steele is an award-winning poet, author, public speaker, singer, and advocate for the blind. Diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) in 2014, this genetic eye condition left Dave “severely sight impaired.” Together with his wife, Amy, the family grappled with the difficult diagnosis as RP quickly left Steele an unemployed father of four. Feeling the stressors of financial debt and the loss of his independence, Dave turned to social media for support with his RP journey. He was also struck by the numerous misconceptions and stories of injustice being experienced by so many blind/visually impaired people all over the world. When a member in one of these online groups learned of Dave's singing background, they invited him to perform at a meeting for those living with RP and Usher Syndrome. The experience inspired Steel's idea for his “Stand By Me RP” song. Using the classic song by Ben E. King, Dave altered the lyrics to relate to how he felt losing his own sight to Retinitis Pigmentosa. In December 2014, Dave sought permission from the band Elbow, to alter the lyrics of their song “One Day Like This.” With the band's blessing, Steele performed his version of the song at Joanne Milne's “Breaking the Silence” book launch. Steph is a product , people and fitness enthusiast. She is Head of Operations at software company, Wordnerds and is also a part-time Crossfit coach. The Very Important Points from this episode: Understand that you can do what others can, maybe not in the same way, but you can. Everyone has different aspects of their physical fitness that they need help with, you might feel like you're the only one, but you're not. Your strength will come from building community. Your mindset will shift with physical activity. You can move past the barriers that you face. Make the initial jump and do it again and again until it's second nature The fears that we have are much worse in our head. Courage is not the absence of fear, courage is about feeling the fear and doing it anyway. You can do more than you thought you could do . You are not measuring yourself against anyone else - this about you and your personal growth. In this week's episode, I'm talking about ‘How your difference can be the difference'. We should take pride in the fact that there are differences between us - they're what make us unique - and I don't know about you - but I quite like knowing that there isn't anyone else like me on the planet! Having a disability, such as a visual impairment, is however, one of those differences that we could easily say that we would rather not have. Disability, for many of us, can be a difference that, instead of making us feel proud about all that we are, can make us feel ‘less than' and that we don't measure up because of the limitations that our conditions place on our lives. So how do we as individuals and a community work towards allowing our differences to be the difference that others need? How do we as VIPs, learn to recognise the beauty that lies in something that appears on the outside to be broken? I have often thought about Stargardts, the eye disease that has caused my sight loss, as the part of me that is broken - the part that can't be used and is of no use to me or anyone else. My eyes don't function in the way that others do and this can't be corrected by wearing glasses or contact lenses. And at the moment, there is no cure. Some ordinary tasks are more difficult and take a lot more time and planning than normal if I'm going to be able to do them well. Are my eyes broken? I suppose that's one way of putting it. Then I start to think about what we tend to do with things that are broken or no longer of use to us - we find a way of clearing out and getting rid of those things. But as VIPs we can't get rid of our eyes, no matter how severe our level of sight loss is. What we need to work on is how we can find the beauty, strength and possibility that lies in what appears to be broken. In this week's episode, I'm speaking to Jo'Nia Miller. I'm sure that you will be inspired by her story and the wisdom that she has to share as much as I have been. Jo'Nia is a shining example of all that She is a VIP stands for. Here's her bio. Welcome to the world as seen through the eyes of Jo'Nia Miller! I discovered early on that drawing was my purpose and my gift. I use my creativity and imagination to bring my artwork to life. I am inspired to create pieces that depict the many facets of women. We are diverse, beautiful, unique, powerful, courageous, and passionate. Even as a visually impaired woman, I can see these truths about all women! As a visually impaired woman I have never allowed my impairment to prevent me from creating art and impacting others through my work. Through my art I want to inspire others to never stop dreaming and to continually pursue their purpose regardless of life's challenges. I recently had the pleasure of speaking to Charlie Kramer about all things vision and how important it is that we all, with or without sight loss, take the time and space to nurture and grow what's on the inside of each and everyone of us so that we can all step up to and into who we have been created to be. Before we get into the episode, here's what you need to know about Charlie. Legally blind from Retinitis Pigmentosa, Charlie Kramer unites, magnetizes and elevates those around him. A touring blind speaker and musical artist, Charlie has travelled across North America, Israel and Australia sharing his talent and message. Recently featured in USA Today, Charlie is a Disability + Inclusion advocate and coach. He utilizes his blindness as a tool to educate people on the importance of inclusion, equality and radical self-acceptance. As the Founder and Creative Director of the blindfolded singing and healing experience, Singing in the Dark, Charlie helps others to face their challenges and uncover the many blessings within their lives through music and meditation. His newly released album “Blind” is a raw portrayal of his journey in accepting his disability and using it as a positive force for change. 11. The Zone of Nurture

This week is the sixth and final part of this series where we are looking at the six zones of vision that make up the VISION CENTRED PROCESS. The vision centred process is my way of helping you make sense of where and how to start your journey towards a life of more clarity and purpose. The Zone of Nurture is about how we take care of ourselves and how we take care of the new mindset and practices that we are building so that we can thrive whilst living life as a visually impaired person. The work that takes place through each of the different zones of vision can be intense and with this in mind, I know and I want you to know that it is so important that we learn how to take the time to nurture the new thing that is growing within us. So my question for all of us today is how are we planning to make sure that the vision we are building grows strong because we are taking care of ourselves and sticking (as much as possible) to the new routines and practices we have begun to implement? The ability to adjust and settle into a new way of doing things isn't easy - especially if you have been so used to things being a certain way and then it seems like all of a sudden, those things you thought you knew and were easily able to do, are no longer a reality for you. How can we begin to adjust to the challenges that sight loss will bring, so that we can start to become all that we have been created to be? This episode looks at three ways in which we can continue the journey towards realising our true status as VIPs. Continuing to work through the building blocks of the vision centred process- the steps we can take to help us get clear about who we are and who we have been created to be. This week is all about IMPLEMENTATION -how do we take what we are learning and actually make it work for us in the very specific way we need it to? INSTAGRAM https://www.instagram.com/she_isavip/ FACEBOOK GROUP https://www.facebook.com/groups/sheisavipcommunity

This episode is the third in the six-part series where I'm explaining each of the steps in the Vision centred process that I outlined in episode 4. So this week we are focusing on the Zone of Strength. Within this Zone of Vision, our attention is directed towards making sure that we are making a conscious effort to grow stronger in key areas of our lives. Along my journey of developing a clear vision for my life, I too looked at the different areas of my life that needed a bit more of my attention. I started to realise that the things I wanted to improve on were actually only symptoms that had come from me having ignored to a lesser or greater extent, my development and growth in three broad areas: My physical, spiritual and emotional and mental health. Coming to an understanding as to how these areas form the foundation for everything we want to do and achieve in our lives is so important. And yes, I'll say it again, especially when you are living with a disability. INSTAGRAM https://www.instagram.com/she_isavip/ FACEBOOK GROUP https://www.facebook.com/groups/sheisavipcommunity

This week is the first in a six-part series where we look in more detail at each of the steps in the VISION centred process. This episode is all about the Zone of Values - establishing or reminding ourselves of what our Core Values are, in other words, the principles or beliefs that each of us hold and are of central importance to how we live our lives. If our vision is going to become clearer, getting clarity about what and who we value is a good place to start.
