Starting Over at 70: Finding Clarity and Peace Without Alcohol After Retirement | Jan's Naked Life | EP 884

Trigger Warning: This episode contains discussions of divorce and loss of a loved one to cancer. Have you ever wondered why life changes can make old habits suddenly feel louder? Jan never imagined retirement would lead her here. She had done everything “right”—worked hard, raised her kids, showed up for everyone else. Alcohol had always felt manageable. Until it didn't. When retirement, relocation, and COVID collided, Jan found herself drinking more to fill the long afternoons and quiet evenings. Drinking more after retirement felt normal at first, even expected. What she didn't expect was how disconnected, anxious, and unlike herself she began to feel. In this warm, honest conversation with Coach Cole, Jan shares how she began questioning not just her drinking, but the lifelong pattern of putting herself last. Through This Naked Mind and The Path, she learned that nothing was wrong with her—and that alcohol had simply become a stand-in for rest, relief, and emotional safety. Coach Cole and Jan discuss: Growing up in a dysfunctional home with two alcohol dependent parents and learning to shut down emotionally Moving to Colorado during COVID and experiencing the perfect storm of retirement, isolation, and empty nest syndrome Drinking more after retirement and how it escalated from afternoon drinking to morning drinking The terrifying fall down the stairs that led to hospitalization and overwhelming shame Why AA meetings didn't feel like the right fit and how finding Annie's book changed everything Joining The Path in April 2024 and celebrating 20 months alcohol-free Navigating divorce after 35 years of marriage and her sister's death from cancer—all without alcohol Learning to put herself first after a lifetime of taking care of everyone else Starting over at nearly 70 and believing the best is yet to come And more topics… Episode links: nakedmindpath.com Related Episodes: Alcohol & Older Adults, What We Need To Know - Reader Question - E152 - https://thisnakedmind.com/ep-152-reader-question-alcohol-and-older-adults-2/ Alcohol Over 60 - Coaching Questions - E418 - https://thisnakedmind.com/ep-418-coaching-questions-with-scott-pinyard/ Alcohol Free at 83 - Barbara's Naked Life - E307 - https://thisnakedmind.com/ep-307-naked-life-story-barbara/ Ready to take the next step on your journey? Visit https://learn.thisnakedmind.com/podcast-resources for free resources, programs, and more. At BossMom, we're normalizing the conversations that help you grow a business while raising a family. In this episode, Dana opens up about the constant struggle moms face when deciding where to put their energy and time. From choosing to cuddle her sick kids all week to flying to Arizona for a mastermind event, she shares the raw truth that being busy isn't the same as being effective. She breaks down why every strategy "works" but most of us are stuck because we lack clarity on what we're actually building. The real lesson? You can't delegate, scale, or find freedom without absolute clarity on who you're serving and why. You don't need more time management tips, you need to get brutally honest about where you're wasting energy on busy work instead of building something that actually gives you the freedom to choose the cuddles when it matters most. This conversation is not about blaming yourself, diagnosing a partner, or pushing you toward a decision. It's about understanding why effort alone doesn't lead to change in covert narcissistic dynamics—and why that realization can feel both devastating and relieving at the same time. We'll explore the difference between healthy conflict and covert narcissistic dynamics, specifically how attempts at repair are often met with deflection, defensiveness, silence, or emotional punishment rather than accountability and follow-through. What if the longer periods of darkness during winter could be our teacher? In this episode, host Elizabeth Mintun reflects on stillness, renewal, and possibility during late December. Drawing from timeless wisdom - the Northern European tradition of the Twelve Nights and the Inuit story of Sedna's descent into the deep - Elizabeth explores how darkness, pause, and reflection are essential parts of growth. These stories illuminate the ways that slowing down, observing inner patterns, and cultivating clarity prepare us for meaningful beginnings. This episode is perfect for anyone seeking calm, grounding, and mindful presence during a season that can feel emotionally heightened, complex, or tender.Key TakeawaysBy honoring the quiet and slowing down, you create space for clarity, renewal, and the unfolding of what's next.Though the spaces of uncertainty during times of change, transition, or decision-making can be quite uncomfortable, it can be very helpful to breathe through the discomfort rather than trying to “hop over it”. Notice if you're experiencing a push for “resolutions” and see how possible it might be to offer yourself ease and open curiosity about how you'd like to unfold in the coming year. Cut Through the Noise: Finding Clarity in Your Marketing | Orly Zeewy | 1180

Ever feel like your marketing message is shouting into a crowded room? Every day, your customers are bombarded by thousands of messages—from family, friends, and brands all vying for their attention. So how do you make yours stand out? I chatted with Orly Zeewy, a speaker, educator, and facilitator of those “aha” light bulb moments, about one of my favorite topics: clarity. Orly helps entrepreneurs turn fuzzy ideas into sharp, memorable messages that connect and convert. As she put it, “What's clear for you is not necessarily what's clear for the person you're speaking to.” And that's the heart of the problem—most of us start by explaining what we do, when we should be showing people why it matters to them. We explored how clarity isn't just a nice-to-have. It's what helps people remember you long after they scroll past. And, Orley reminded me, true clarity starts with understanding who your message is for and what they actually need. Here are a few takeaways from our conversation: Start with your audience. Everyone says they market to “anyone,” but that's a fast track to blending in. Get clear about who really needs what you offer. Fix your elevator pitch. Stop saying what you do and start saying what problem you solve. “I design websites” doesn't stick—but “I turn fuzzy content into clear messages that cut through the noise” sure does. Own your superpower. Women especially tend to undervalue what comes naturally to them. Just because it feels easy doesn't mean it isn't valuable. Avoid being a hammer looking for a nail. When you don't define your audience, you end up marketing to everyone—and connecting with no one. If you've ever felt like your message gets lost in the noise, this episode will help you find your voice, sharpen your story, and finally get your marketing to click.  Because let's face it—when you make the fuzzy clear, everything else just falls into place. About Orly Orly Zeewy is an author, speaker, educator, and a facilitator of lightbulb moments. Her superpower? She makes fuzzy clear. She helps entrepreneurs clarify and communicate their zone of genius, so they can attract more of their ideal clients and go from invisible to memorable in 3 weeks. She has lectured at Wharton and taught in The Close School of Entrepreneurship at Drexel University, and the University of Pennsylvania. Her book: Ready, Launch, Brand: The Lean Marketing Guide for Startups was published in 2021 and was endorsed by Seth Godin. Her new book: Why NOT Me? The Female Guide for Entrepreneurship will be published in Q1 2026. Creating Organizational Cultures That Actually Work In this episode, Michael and cultural anthropologist Jitske Kramer dive deep into the heart of organizational culture. Michael shares a story from a startup he supported, where a crystal clear sense of purpose created unity, loyalty, and a genuine feeling of belonging. Employees stayed because they felt connected to something bigger than a job description. Jitske expands on this by highlighting how leaders shape culture through the behaviors, values, and norms they model. She stresses that culture is never an accident. It is a series of daily choices and conversations. When leaders fail to engage with their teams or invite them into meaningful decision making, organizations lose clarity and people lose their sense of belonging. Both Michael and Jitske agree that leaders miss countless opportunities to build trust simply because they are not intentionally engaging with their people. Transformative Leadership and the Power of Human Connection Michael brings up a powerful metaphor involving an orchestra conductor to show how communication and knowledge flow can transform the relationship between leaders and their teams. When the conductor shifts from directing to connecting, the entire ensemble transforms. The energy changes. People take ownership. Collaboration becomes natural rather than forced. Jitske builds on this idea by contrasting transactional interactions with transformative ones. Transactional moments keep the lights on, but transformative moments build the future. She emphasizes the need for what she calls campfire conversations. These are the unhurried, human centered discussions where ideas form, trust deepens, and innovation actually has space to emerge. They conclude that the most successful organizations are the ones that prioritize human to human connection over rigid systems and corporate scripts. Finding Clarity in the Messy Middle of Change Jitske introduces her latest book, Tricky Times, which explores liminality. Liminality refers to the messy middle stage of change when the old story no longer works and the new story is not yet formed. She describes this phase as uncomfortable but deeply necessary. She explains that societies worldwide are wrestling with a kind of midlife crisis. People are questioning the expectation of nonstop economic growth and the conflict it creates with environmental and social realities. In these liminal spaces, power dynamics shift. Cultural identities get rewritten. Leaders are challenged to redefine what truly matters. Michael shares how timely these insights feel, especially given the current political climate in the United States and abroad. He highlights how difficult but essential conversations shape whether we move forward with intention or stay stuck in old patterns. Leading with Courage in Tricky Times Jitske describes the leadership challenges she writes about in Tricky Times. She warns against leaders who act like tricksters, constantly pushing boundaries without offering guidance or stability. True leadership requires bold honesty, grounded decision making, and the willingness to enter uncomfortable conversations. She emphasizes that balanced leadership is essential. Leaders must be willing to question assumptions, tell the truth about what is working and what is not, and invite their organizations into deeper reflection. Tricky Times has become a bestseller in the Netherlands, and Jitske is sharing its message with influential political leaders who are navigating uncertainty on a national scale. The book is available as an e-book on Amazon and offers a grounded, human centered framework for leading through cultural transformation. Jitske Kramer is a renowned Dutch corporate anthropologist who translates real-world lessons from communities around the globe into practical tools for modern workplaces.    She travels the world to learn from traditional healers, innovators, random passers-by, and everyday communities, studying how humans bond, lead, and resolve conflict — and brings those insights into the boardroom.   Her latest book, Tricky Times (a #1 Dutch bestseller), explores what it takes to lead in “the messy middle” — those uncertain in-between phases where old systems break down before new ones emerge.    With 25+ years of experience, she has shaped transformation for Nike, Unilever, Calvin Klein, and Philips, authored 9 bestselling books (150,000+ copies sold), and spoken alongside Simon Sinek, Amy Edmondson, Yuval Noah Harari on stages like TEDx and Workhuman Live.   Jitske's sharp, funny, and “aha”-filled style makes anthropology highly accessible for leaders facing change, culture challenges, and transformation.   Topics:  The messy middle: Leading effectively through uncertainty and liminal times The real drivers of company culture: Rituals, symbols, and hidden power structures How to “think like an anthropologist” to sense change and spot unseen dynamics The difference between formal power and cultural power — and why rank-awareness is critical for leaders What tribes can teach today's organizations about handling dilemmas and conflict   More about Jitske:  Founder of HumanDimensions, a pioneering training company that helps organizations strengthen teamwork and company culture.  Featured in the Patterns of Life documentary series, in which she traveled to India as an anthropologist.  Former Fellow at the Oxford Leadership Academy; holds a master's degree in cultural anthropology from Utrecht University.  Other books by Jitske: Building Tribes, Wow! What a Difference, Work Has Left the Building, Jam Cultures, andThe Corporate Tribe (which won the prestigious 2016 Management book of the Year Award). Take a look at Jitske's keynotes, other public speeches, TV appearances, and writings.    To get a sense of Jitske, here's an appearance she made on The Culture Lab podcast, talking about the making of a corporate tribe and how to effectively deal with diversity in a team.

Introduction: In today's fast-paced world, many of us struggle with feelings of confusion and uncertainty. In the latest episode of the Mask Off podcast, host Keiara Gladney dives deep into the importance of clarity in our lives. With insightful discussions and practical advice, she guides us on how to achieve a clearer understanding of our paths and purpose. Main Content:**Understanding Clarity** Clarity is more than just a buzzword; it's the foundation for meaningful relationships and personal growth. Keiara emphasizes that clarity is about mutual understanding and the ability to ask questions. She shares a poignant example from her own life involving a medical decision for her father. During a call with his doctor, she did not hesitate to ask clarifying questions to ensure her family had all the necessary information. This kind of proactive communication is vital, both in professional settings and in our relationships with God and others.**The Struggles of Confusion** Many individuals find themselves feeling lost in various aspects of life due to a lack of clarity. Keiara points out that this confusion often stems from a fear of asking questions. In her experience, particularly in some religious environments, asking questions can be discouraged, leaving many feeling isolated and unsure. This lack of communication can stifle personal and spiritual growth, creating a cycle of confusion.**Gaining Clarity Amid Overwhelm** When faced with feelings of burnout or emotional exhaustion, Keiara advises listeners to turn to God first. Acknowledging one's feelings is the first step toward clarity. She suggests evaluating the sources of overwhelm and identifying what can realistically be changed. For example, if late-night conversations drain your energy, consider setting boundaries around your availability. The key is to take actionable steps toward a healthier emotional state.**Faith and Prayer as Tools for Clarity** Keiara stresses the role of prayer in achieving clarity. It's not just about asking for guidance; it's about building a relationship with God where you can receive direction and encouragement. Through consistent prayer, we can shift from operating on emotion to being grounded in faith and purpose.**Actionable Steps for Gaining Clarity** To summarize, Keiara presents several questions to reflect on your current state:1. What does clarity mean to you in this season of life?2. What areas of your life feel confusing, and why?3. How can you begin to seek clarity in those areas?4. What realistic changes can you implement today to reduce overwhelm?5. Who can you reach out to for support and guidance?By engaging with these questions, you can begin to unravel the confusion and find a clearer path forward. Conclusion: Clarity is essential for navigating life with purpose and intent. By asking the right questions, seeking divine guidance, and being honest with ourselves, we can break free from confusion and operate in alignment with our true purpose. Remember, clarity isn't just about knowing where you're going; it's about understanding the journey and the lessons embedded within it.Key Takeaways:- Clarity is fundamental for personal growth and meaningful relationships.- Fear of asking questions can lead to confusion in various life areas.- Prayer and self-awareness are crucial in finding clarity amid overwhelm.- Regular reflection and proactive communication can help navigate life's complexities.Follow & Connect:FB: Keiara B. What if the fastest path to clarity isn't a plan, but a choice about who you'll be in the next moment? If you're outwardly “successful” yet feel stuck, drained by uncertainty, or trapped in the “someday I'll be happy” loop, this conversation with strategist and author Hussein Hallak reframes mastery as a living practice: a dance between being and doing, where you define success on your terms and let your thoughts, words, and actions flow from that choice.Learn a practical way to embrace uncertainty, so it fuels momentum instead of anxiety.Discover the powerful difference between decisions (data-driven) and choices (identity-driven) to end paralysis and act with integrity.Replace borrowed definitions of success with your own, aligning mindset, skill set, and tool set to create meaning now, not “someday.”Press play to learn how to make identity-aligned choices today and turn uncertainty into a catalyst for a happier, more intentional life.˚KEY POINTS AND TIMESTAMPS:01:54 - Introducing Hussein Hallak and his background03:15 - The defining moment that shaped his view of life mastery04:48 - What life mastery means and the dance between being and doing09:26 - Why life mastery is a “dark art”12:34 - Embracing uncertainty and the mindset of a realistic dreamer18:34 - Compassion, experimentation, and the power of choice22:25 - The difference between choice and decision26:08 - The “someday symptom” and redefining success29:00 - Hussein's message to his younger self and final reflections34:37 - Closing thoughts and parting message˚MEMORABLE QUOTE:"Go all out, like be more yourself than you've ever been. Sometimes being lost isn't failure—it's freedom. The best views, lessons, and growth often come when you step off the path everyone else is on. Show Notes: In this introspective Shark Theory episode, Baylor Barbee takes a morning walk with his dog Bear that turns into a life lesson about uncertainty, perspective, and purpose. What started as a detour through unfamiliar terrain became a powerful reminder that being "off track" doesn't always mean you're behind—it might mean you're exactly where you're supposed to be. Through encounters with wildlife and an unexpected birdwatcher, Baylor explores the difference between fear and perspective, showing how a change in mindset can turn panic into peace. What You'll Learn in This Episode: Why feeling "lost" often signals growth, not failure How adrenaline and fear can distort perception The beauty of getting off the path and exploring new territory Why comparing your journey to others only slows your progress How to stay calm and confident when you can't see what's ahead Featured Quote: "Just because we're on the same path doesn't mean we have the same destination. Sometimes getting lost is how you find what's truly meant for you."
