STORIES OF RESILIENCE Meningitis Survivors and Advocates Share Their Journeys    Welcome to another special and poignant episode of the Destiny is Debatable podcast. As we acknowledge World Meningitis Day on October 5th, we are honored to present a collection of heartfelt stories from around the globe, shared by individuals whose lives have been profoundly affected by meningitis.   Christine Bennborn from Sweden recounts the harrowing experience of losing her son, Mathias, to meningitis and sepsis in 2019. Driven by this tragedy, Christine founded Meningokockfonden in Sweden, dedicating herself to spreading awareness and advocating for better vaccination policies.   From Georgia, Shaquille Hodge, who transformed his grief into action after his wife, Percilla, succumbed to meningitis while they were on vacation. Shaquille established the PAMAH Foundation, named in honor of his wife, to educate and raise awareness about this silent killer through car shows and scholarship programs.   Katie Thompson, a meningitis survivor from South Carolina, who faced excruciating pain and near-death but emerged as a passionate patient advocate. Katie's story is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and a reminder of the importance of vaccination and awareness.   Claytone Musungu from Kenya shares his journey of founding the Meningitis Information Foundation in Nairobi, Kenya after witnessing the devastating impact of meningitis on a close friend's family. Claytone's efforts to educate the public and work with the government aim to defeat meningitis by 2030.   Jayme Fahrer from New Jersey, who survived bacterial meningitis in 2009. Despite enduring severe physical and mental challenges, Jamie's determination to spread awareness and support others is truly inspiring. Her story emphasizes the urgent need for prompt medical care and the importance of prevention.   Tom Nutt, Chief Executive of Meningitis Now in the UK, sheds light on the critical work of his organization. From funding research and raising awareness to supporting affected individuals, Tom's insights underscore the multifaceted approach needed to combat this disease. He also highlights the importance of vaccination and knowing the signs and symptoms of meningitis.   John Grimes wraps things up with a reminder of hope. Through his experience with meningitis, he quickly learned that survival wasn't the end of his journey, it was just the beginning. John also offers his advice on the importance of acting now to shape your life into the future you want.   Throughout this episode, you'll hear powerful narratives of loss, resilience, and hope. These stories serve as a compelling reminder of the impact meningitis can have and the importance of continued efforts to spread awareness and promote vaccination. By sharing their experiences, our guests not only honor their loved ones but also strive to protect others from this preventable disease.   Through these efforts we will not just defeat meningitis, we'll make meningitis nothing more than a historical footnote.

We interviewed Dr Simon Chapman who was turning himself inside out giving evidence to senate inquiries. He was  contesting  the organised narrative of illness around windfarms and opponents are still organised. Now Coalition MPs and their allies appear at Reckless Renewables rallies. Their hostility, even to wind farms 10kilometres offshore, is building up as renewable Energy Zones are declared. We speak to John Grimes from the Smart Energy Council. SOCIAL LICENCEThen we go to Wollongong University, where Dr Freya Croft is working on how to create  social licence for the energy transition that is roilling out too slowly. Plus an historical reminder:In 1903 there were 3623 horsedrawn buses in London and 13 motor busesIn 1913 there were 3522 motor buses and only 142 horse drawn buses"The future is shaped by those who can see it." TARKINE OPTIMISMForest Action is profound Climate Restoration, so we go to Tasmania. Dr Colette Harmsen is a veterinary scientist. In this exclusive interview she speaks to us about how she and Bob Brown were arrested recently and why taking climate action is an antidote to depresssion. As Bob Brown said : "Change doesn't happen when we are in our comfort zone. It is uncomfortable by nature. If it's not uncomfortable, then check again – is anything actually changing, or are we just re-arranging the deck chairs? The higher the stakes, the greater the risks that need taking. As leaders, we must take risks. We must find a way to quieten the voice of fear and doubt and back ourselves against the inevitable barrage of resistance."Meanwhile Protesters have gone back to the Styx Valley to  peacefully interrupt logging.“While fellow forest defender Ali Alishah is in jail today, we are defending these forests from destruction. The fact that peaceful protesters are being gaoled and face severe penalties for standing up against this destruction will not deter us. It is the native forest logging that is criminal in a climate emergency and extinction crisis,” said Dr Lisa Searle, Campaign Organiser with BBF.“This logging of ancient forests in southern Tasmania is absolutely disgraceful. The government should be ashamed for sanctioning this devastation. We will continue to take action and defend these precious forests until we see a commitment from our leaders to end native forest logging. There is an opportunity right now for Tasmanian voters to make a choice: vote for protecting forests and wildlife or more logging destruction,” she said.https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-07-04/tasmania-expands-native-logging-areas/102552280

EP. 193 | 22JUL21 | Biden says Facebook kills people. Shame in the PD. Every child left behind. A WOLF AMONG US AND THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO BE THE SHEPHERD Former Fairfax County Police Officer, John Grimes, was indicted on Monday for allegedly engaging in sexual misconduct with a 16-year-old girl who was part of the Public Safety Cadet Program in 2019. Grimes was charged with three counts of custodial indecent liberties. “I have no pity for Grimes. He took advantage of a teenager, and he did so in and out of a Fairfax County Police Uniform,” Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis said during a press conference on Tuesday. My wife had a chance to speak to a couple of officers about this and my take. EVERY CHILD LEFT BEHIND ACT This week, Texas became the first state to publish a full set of student test scores for this past school year. This provides an early look at what we might expect to see across the country after over a year of pandemic schooling. The news was not good… and darn skippy I am going to tell you all about it tonight. I PROMISE THIS IS THE LAST TIME… TODAY "They're killing people." That was the simple declarative sentence President Joe Biden uttered in response to a question a reporter asked him as he left the White House on Friday. "On COVID misinformation, what's your message to platforms like Facebook?" the reporter had shouted as the president was walking toward Marine One. Biden turned and walked directly toward the reporter. "They're killing people," he said. How censorship is taking place right under our noses. Broadcast at Radio 3CR in Melbourne  and  Radio Skid Row in SydneyGUESTSGilbert Rochecouste - Founder of Village WellChristine Milne - Greens International  AmbassadorJohn Grimes  - Smart Energy CouncilTragic times for many as hospitals and unemployment agencies are overwhelmed by Corona Virus.Challenging times for climate campaigners as this PAUSE in global emissions is a fork in the road.  CANA chat lunchtime webinars show we could  flatten the curve of emissions path we are on. The shutdown of industry in China is reportedly  yielding a 25% drop in emissions.Aviation and other transport is slowing and how happy will the elderly be to go on a cruise ship in the future? Could we achieve 700% Renewable energy and not only provision new green industries here but export green energy overseas? The lifting of some pollution means better health and blue skies. But will the global dimming effect of all that smoke mean a rise in emissions? Gilbert Rochecouste, fresh from an epiphany in the Tarkine, talks about pressing the reset button on the rat race.Climate action is often stymied by the elephant in the room which is consumption. How can we reset our lives,to relocalise and share, in the decade when emissions need to plummet? Citizens are leading a new narrative after the drought, the fires and now the pandemic. We  are at a tipping point in consciousness. We must not let the big institutions and corporations drag us back to the old paradigm which is destroying the biosphere. Christine Milne spoke to the Beyond Zero Emissions show at the Climate Emergency Summit. She is sure the fossil fuel industry was positioning itself for bail outs at Davos even before the pandemic was declared worldwide. "They are years ahead of in the strategy".  We must not supply thecinfrastructure them to o p en up the Gallee,# the Beetaloo and the North West Shelf. In a wide ranging analysis she says we must stop their subsidies. They are not too big to fail and there are many alternatives. John Grimes gave a talk to the People's Assembly on the first day of Federal Parliament in Canberra. Bushfire smoke was still billowing over the lawns and boxes of now rare face masks were on hand for anyone with trouble breathing. He was scathing about the lobbyists for coal, oil and gas who greatly outnumber lobbyists for clean energy solutions. They have far greater access and are a corrupting influence on our democracy. He is a true patriot and impatient for the climate emergency to turbo charge training in all the trades needed for 700% renewable energy. With leadership we could remain as an energy exporter instead of the" international parriah" holding out against the global shift a green economy. # The biggest coal reserve in the world.South Australia is already at 75% and ACT at 100%. But our present renewable energy target is zero.
