Listen to Part Two of my conversation with NAHA award-winning educator and our industry's most prominent social activist Keya Neal. We've all been through a lot in recent years, including witnessing the gutting of D.E.I. initiatives across the USA. What might it mean for pro beauty - and what's next (Part 2)?
Today perhaps more than ever, there is tension by many (inside of the industry) between the ideas of artistry and service. Most concerning is what seems to be the opinion of many that these are mutually exclusive ideas - that we cannot be artists as well as 'service providers'. On that point, I've never heard a consumer call us with either of these terms. Both to me are inside the industry terms - as the public tends to call us their 'hairdressers, stylists and/or barbers'. A short rant on some big and important ideas around these industry conversations.*Note: this episode was published originally as #68
Award-winning educator and social activist Keya Neal joins Gordon to share her backstory before we dive into a serious conversation around race, texture, and the professional salon industry. We've all been through a lot in recent years, including witnessing the recent gutting of D.E.I. initiatives across the USA. What might it mean for pro beauty - and what's next? Listen in to Part 1 of our 2-episode series with Keya. Watch for Part 2 to release on 4/23/2025.
I'm excited to welcome back @growmysalonbusiness founder Antony Whitaker to discuss the state of the industry during what I consider to be 'fuzzy' economic times, the importance(and power)of investing in yourself to solve business and career challenges, and much more (all related to the business side of creating long-term success). Note: Be sure to check out one of my favorite industry podcasts: Grow My Salon Business, hosted by Antony Whitaker.
According to Chat GPT, Economics is "the study of how people use resources and make decisions about money. It looks at how goods and services are produced, distributed, and consumed, and it helps us understand how individuals, businesses, and governments manage their finances and resources to meet their needs and wants." It's as much as 'art' as it is a science - and is the topic of today's episode!*Note: this episode was published originally as #86
The pro salon industry talks a LOT about the "6 figure hairdresser" but rarely with clarity about what it takes to get there. In today's episode, I share my lessons learned from Antony Whitaker's Grow My Salon Business podcast (Episode 267). Antony interviews guest Maxwell Snow, a color specialist at Atlanta's Van Michael Salon who is among the top-earning hairdressers working behind the chair in the USA. I share my notes from this inspired conversation digging into the practices and beliefs that have led to Maxwell's tremendous success (one that does NOT include a social media following). Be sure to listen to Antony's conversation with Maxwell on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or YouTube (search for Grown My Salon Business podcast).*Note: this episode was published originally as #96
Tatum Neill's Elevate Hair is turning 10 this year - and true to its name, the popular event has helped to ELEVATE the careers of more than a few up-and-coming Artists. The artist, technical, business & social media educator, corporate executive & DJ is also a member of the industry's iconic Neill family. Following his recent surprise 'appearance' on the leading tech podcast in America(Pivot), I just had to have Tatum on for a chat (inspiring me to add some interesting future guests back into my rotation!).
Taking a break from the usual to talk about a topic few of us know enough about - Civics. Per my office buddy Chat GPT, "Civics is all about understanding how government works, how people participate, and how decisions (laws and more) get made". Knowing the basics is valuable in understanding the state of the beauty industry's regulatory landscape... as well as everyday life. Note: this is not a political episode. I stayed way clear of that. Hope you enjoy. :-)
In this episode, I tackle several topics including the Pre-Booking/Re-Booking "controversy", an update on rising inflation and tariffs and how to consider relative to your business, the continuing trend of falling retail sales in salons, and our perceptions around shifting consumer behaviors. On the AI front, I used ChatGPT to get feedback around that last point and share it verbatim to help show the power of these platforms.
Over the last 10 years, Suites have arguably been the #1 disruptor of the professional salon industry. The tremendous growth in suites has led to hiring and retention problems for traditional salons, revenue challenges for brands, business model challenges for distributors, and educational challenges for schools.Listen in for my take on what the real 'trouble' with Suites is, my projections for continued growth - and, with a little help from AI-, the pros and cons of going into the Suite life. *Note: this episode was published originally as #90
The fast pace of innovations in Artificial intelligence is like nothing we've ever seen - including the release last week of the exponentially powerful Deep Research functions that Open AI, Perpleixity, and Google's Gemini have all just launched. This week I give my take on the power of this innovation to go deep into 'the weeds' of our industry to provide meaningful insights into the true inner workings of the pro beauty industry.
Although there is much uncertainty around the plan to put tariffs on Mexico, Canada, China and the E.U., the ongoing threat makes this a topic perhaps worthy of some conversation. Big picture, tariff's almost always add inflationary pressures (for starters). Given our industry's struggles with pricing and price increases-and the large amount of products, tools and furnishings being imported, some context may be helpful to some. Listen in for my take on the possible impact of tariffs - and how to think of about them should they end up happening.
My quick tour around the various digital and social platform categories and tools with my added take on how to consider each in building your career and/or business. My most important 'aha' relative to this topic: social media is not only 'old' but it is also very much overhyped in terms of results across the industry. As a long-time 'evangelist' for these platforms relative, I'm here to say that we should all take a big step back to consider our effort vs ROI around all things social media and our careers.
My first recording of the new year is about looking forward - and sharing my thoughts on where technology could be taking our industry. I also check in with Chat GPT to get an AI 'perspective' on where robotics (and related technologies) could take salons and professionals over the next 20 years. Importantly, our larger world of consumers does not have a great history of considering the needs of the workforce that serves it (across industries) as a reason NOT to change the role of said workforce. Think about it...
This episode is re-shared for a 5-part Anthology of 2024's most-listened to episodes -all focused on "Bad Coaching" and the misinformation and real damage it can cause. Schedule of Anthology releases: 12/25: #76 12/30: #78, 1/1: #87, 1/6: #98, and 1/8: #80.Today's episode description: Apologies for remaining in the bad coaching lane but they are at it again - this time recommending salons spend $2500 on building a custome app that will, according to the duo, be more valuable than your business when you decide to one day sell. Add to that a new website that seems suspiciously connected to all of the 'destruction' and I'm back down the proverbial rabbit hole of concern. The last time i hope to talk about these folks for a while.

Having said this, with change comes risk - perhaps today more than ever given the amount of industry-related misinformation being spread far and wide by too many. In this episode, I dig into the 'methodology' of one coaching group (per a recent IG post), offer my take on the thinking behind some of these ideas, and more. Buckle up and listen in!
I am wrapping up 2024 with a quick rant on the continuing flow of misinformation hijacking too many businesses and careers - for all the wrong reasons. I end with some thoughts about the coming year. Wishing all a wonderful holiday season and a great start to the new year just around the corner!
As a follow-up to a recent episode featuring Debra Neill (Neill Education and Serious Business conference) and our talk about the big picture of where events may be headed, this week I dig deep into the power of conferences - and what makes great ones stand out. In my opinion, the conference space is where we have the biggest opportunity to create added value to our larger industry. Listen in for more.
I've been thinking a lot about this year and the pro beauty industry and what it all might means for the longer term - which led me to look instead at what's ahead in the next few years for salons and pros- across business models, best practices, and more. Thanks to all who make time to listen regularly, it means the world to me. Wishing all a great holiday season and a most amazing 2025!
My quick update on the continuing challenge of bad coaching (fueled by misinformation and clickbait). Sadly, careers and salons continue to be DESTROYED by an effort to somehow "salon differently" under the 'guidance' of those selling programs and services to do what these coaches have never done - owned or managed commissioned salons.
The evolution events (of all kinds) is such an important topic given the significant role they play in our industry. Debra Neill is CEO of Neill, an iconic, educationally focused family-owned organization. Not your traditional chief executive officer", Debra is instead Chief Engergy Officer, a fitting title given her genuine passion and positive energy around our industry and its future. Check out Neill's iconic Serious Business conference (1/11-12, New Orleans) at seriousbusiness.net.

Words are so powerful! They can inform, inspire, and/or elevate- or they can confuse, crush and/or diminish. In this episode, I share context around the powerful 'labels' we attach to most individuals who work behind the chair, in classrooms, or on stages. Today we often refer to all who are licensed as Artists and Professionals; and all who are self-employed as Entrepreneurs. Listen in for my take on all of this and more.
My quick take on the "work less to make more" conversation I see going on across the industry - too often without the proper context from which individuals can make the best decision for their unique life and career circumstances. This may be a bit contrarian for some but it's just my honest take - shared hoping to offer more context for those looking for solutions.
Although we are very passionate as an industry about the need to understand the foundational rules of the craft, business & career best practices -which often fall into the grey areas of knowledge- are too often deemed 'right or wrong'. The key to navigating the grays of our industry? Knowledge and experience along with great role models and mentors -all of which are growingly in short supply. Here's my take on this topic along with a warning on 1099ing!
In thinking about the future of our industry and how best to tap into the many and varied opportunities around us all, these are 3 of my favorite words. In this episode, I do a riff of sorts explaining why and what I think they mean for us today...and how changing the way we look at them just might create even more opportunities tomorrow!
Recorded on my way to Intercoiffure North America's Fall Atelier (to do a presentation on AI) this episode digs into some new 'aha's' -as well as a deep dive into what it might all mean for professionals and owners. I truly believe that AI will be revolutionary for how we think about the business of beauty - across categories. Related to this, I belive AI matters to salons in the same way that apps matter to Independents -and could be gamechanging in time.

In this episode, Part 2 of a talk that began with Mindset, @TabathaCoffey digs into the meaning and importance of Mindfulness as a follow-up and a bit of a contrast to Part 1. One of the most iconic names in all of pro beauty, Tabatha is a self-described "Truth Teller, Dream Chaser, And Coach For Women Just Like You". For more about Tabatha, follow her on IG or visit www.tabathcoffey.com
A quick episode on some big topics: the ongoing move to part-time work (driven, in part, to misconceptions about the too often romanticized "Gig Economy"), our troubles with pricing and inflation, and thoughts on the importance and power of great customer service. All this and a bit more in just over 20 minutes. Podcast hack: speed up the player on your favorite podcast platform to save time while listening.
My short take on what i view as the realities around where we've come from, where we are today, and where we just might be headed as an industry - with added context to help make sense of it all (or so I hope!). Giving the negative coaching rants a rest this week- and planning on (hoping for) no bad coach-related episodes in September!
Following another DTH podcast sharing MORE bad advice(on how to leave a salon as an employee), I'm inspired to react to it - and a lot more. I've dug deep into DTH to try and figure out why they think the way they do - and I may have found the answer! If you are following my talks on the dangers of bad coaches, don't miss this one.

I've been talking about the challenges faced by hairdressers and owners looking for competent coaches for 3+ years. Many have been surprised that I've yet to be blocked by one coaching group in particular -and it's finally happened. Silly coaches. I've got 3 accounts following them - just in case this was to happen. This week I dig further into proof points around the lack of coaching competencies and my ongoing fear around the destruction of careers and businesses being quietly done across the industry (as bad information from all kinds of sources sure does travel fast these days thanks to social media).
If time truly is money in our pro lives, then our 'capacity' represents the maximum amount of time that we have to generate revenue. Productivity, on the other hand, drives the reality of your financial outcomes - the difference being your potential for financial growth at this moment. The solution to closing the gaps? Finding efficiencies. This is my geeky take on a critical topic that doesn't get enough attention.
AI has been top of mind for many since late 2022 - and certainly through much of 2023 the same has been true for the press, pundits, and regular folks alike. We've watched the AI category expand from mostly Open AI-focused to now include Google's Gemini, Meta's Llama , and Anthropics Claude (owned in part by Amazon). On top of that, there are now AI Agents being developed by a small army of interested parties across categories. Some compare this to the proliferation of Apps following the i-phone launch. Listen in to my quick round-up of evolving thoughts on the category.
It's hard to believe we have just passed the midway point of 2024...but here we are! Given the ever-hastening speed of change in our world, this felt like a moment to recap where I see the industry's various 'parts and pieces' - everything from shifting business models to events, media...and more.
So much destructive coach chatter across the industry trying to diminish the value of 'service' - weirdly saying to the press: 'We are sick of being service providers and want to get back to the artistry of what we do". The implication is that 'service' is a new idea (it's not!) that takes away from the profession. My take: remove great service from the 'experience' and home haircare is sure to explode to even greater heights(and the AI robots will applaud the lapse in judgment). Listen in for my quick take on the critical need to double down on service as a point of difference separating you from the many who are quickly moving away from this long-time, proven revenue driver.
Given the rush to independent businesses by so many, this feels like great advice for anyone looking to go out on their own (as a business of one or many). This week, i talk about this as well as other relarted "random thoughts" -all connected to our changing business landscape.
I believe deeply that "knowledge is power "- and that history is a special form of knowledge that elevates us all. In that so much misinformation is floating around -including in our pro beauty space-, I asked Chat GPT to help me lay out some of the high points of the last 250+ years related to our profession -and then share my take on what some of it might mean to us today.
Apologies for remaining in the bad coaching lane but they are at it again - this time recommending salons spend $2500 on building a custome app that will, according to the duo, be more valuable than your business when you decide to one day sell. This episode (and follow-ups #77 & #78)has created much buzz about the bad side of coaching in beauty. The resulting feedback has been overwhelming - including stories of bankruptcies, walkouts, and career-crushing results said to be related to the BS being spread by a couple of coaches seemingly in search of fame and $$$. Original description: "Change" is more often than not a good thing - and is essential for any business to thrive in the long term. In our larger world, the idea of facts vs fiction and/or truth vs opinion seems to be a very murky concept that too many are using to not only create wedges amongst us all but also as a way to confuse--and 'market' to us. In this episode, I try to add some much-needed context to this trend as well as speak to the importance of language -and some data all should consider when thinking about the word "entrepreneur". This was recorded the evening before I presented a talk on AI to Intercoiffure America Canada members at their spring conference in Montreal this week. This episode was inspired by that talk on where we may be headed as an industry relative to the evolution of Artificial Intelligence and what it might mean for salons and pros.

A post-Americas Beauty Show episode (translation: I'm worn out!) talking a bit of a tech update in advance of a coming deep dive as well as some commentary on the (over) abundance of coaches in the industry plus a recap of some feedback on my Destroy the B**l Sh*T episode.
