She started dancing at age 5 and got super serious about it at age 10. When she was 13, she left home to attend Quinte Ballet School of Canada in Belleville, Ontario, where she undertook her professional training for the next five years. Now an independent contemporary dance artist, she has spent the past 20 or so years in Toronto/Tkaronto and so-called Vancouver (on the unceded Indigenous territories of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations) wearing almost every "hat" a person can wear in the community, (performer, choreographer, administrator, volunteer, producer, presenter, educator, outside eye, probably a couple other things). She works regularly for local artists Company 605, Justine A. Chambers and Tara Cheyenne Performance, amongst others, as well as being in her eighth season as Associate Artistic Director of four-year post-secondary contemporary dance program Modus Operandi, where she has the responsibility and privilege of teaching a small, dedicated, passionate group of younger dance artists.  Kate has taught Yoga and Pilates mat work in the past. She has been a member of Madlab School of Fitness for the past six years.    About Caron:   As an athlete Caron was dissatisfied with the current state of women's health and representation in the fitness industry.  Many training programs treat male and female athletes the same despite the big underlying difference - hormones.  Taking matters into her own hands, Caron has dedicated herself to learning all she can about women's health and fitness so she can support women at all stages of life - teens, menstruating, peri and postmenopausal and pregnant and postpartum - all which require different nutritional support and training stimulus.  Caron is an associate coach at Madlab School of Fitness in Vancouver. About Tara: Tara Cheyenne Friedenberg, is an award winning creator, performer, choreographer, director, writer, and artistic director of Tara Cheyenne Performance, working across disciplines in film, dance, theatre, and experimental performance. She is renowned as a trailblazer in interdisciplinary performance and as a mighty performer "who defies categorization on any level". Along with her own creations Tara has collaborated with many theatre companies and artists including; Zee Zee Theatre, Bard on the Beach, ItsaZoo Theatre, The Arts Club, Boca De Lupo, Ruby Slippers, The Firehall Arts Centre, Vertigo Theatre (Calgary).  With a string of celebrated solo shows to her credit (including bANGER, Goggles, Porno Death Cult, I can't remember the word for I can't remember, Body Parts, Pants), multidisciplinary collaborations, commissions and boundary bending ensemble creations Tara's work is celebrated both nationally and internationally.  Tara is known for her unique and dynamic hybrid of dance, comedy and theatre. She is sought after for creating innovative movement for theatre and has performed her full length solos and ensemble works around the world (highlights: DanceBase/Edinburgh, South Bank Centre/London, On the Boards/Seattle USA, High Performance Rodeo/Calgary etc.). Recent works include a collaboration with Italian dance/performance artist Silvia Gribaudi, empty.swimming.pool, (Castiglioncello, Bassano, Victoria and Vancouver), ensemble creation, how to be,  which premiered at The Cultch, and her solo I can't remember the word for I can't remember, toured widely, and her newest solo Body Parts has been made into a stunning film which is currently touring virtually. Tara lives on the unceded Coast Salish territories with her partner composer Marc Stewart and their child.

On this episode of The Power of Love Show we welcome special guest, Rukmini Poddar. Emotions add color and depth to our lives and create meaning. Taking the time to sift through our personal emotions can teach us about ourselves and help us process big feelings when they arise. Artist, designer, and educator Rukmini Poddar understands this well and through her artwork she began to realize that “what is most personal is most universal”. And now, readers can dig deep into their own emotions in a creative way with DRAW YOUR FEELINGS, a mind-opening and beautifully illustrated guide filled with watercolor art and meticulous detail. It is both a beautiful and practical tool for a journey of self-discovery. From her work as an artist depicting a wide range of emotions, Rukmini has amassed a following of others seeking the same journey. Her growing platform has touched the lives of nearly 100k followers all seeking her online content and also the courses she teaches on drawing emotions, which are extremely successful. Rukmini's creative passion lies at the intersection of emotional wellness and creative storytelling, which this journal embodies. It gently encourages readers to reflect on themselves and the world around them through lines, shapes, colors, and more. This week Sarah talks with friend of the show, Rachel Dawson. Rachel shares the way her connection to her intuition has evolved throughout her life. About Rachel Dawson Rachel Dawson is an artist, educator, and intuitive located in Oakland, CA. She makes connections between her artistic practice and metaphysical processes, seeking to render the invisible visible and to materialize the immaterial. Tysen Knight is Pop Urban Artist. He is most popularly known for his street art based on Buddha's teachings and pop art sense. Tysen is inspired by the works of famous street artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring. His art style also reflects the styles of Fine Artist Pablo Picasso and Pop Artist Andy Warhol. Tysen was born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and grew up in New Jersey, where he finished high school. He decided to skip the idea of going to college and obtained his barbers' license instead and worked with some of the region's top athletes. He moved to California to pursue his passion in the arts and currently resides in the Palm Springs,California. As a teenager, Tysen communicated his artwork through graffiti on walls and vacant buildings. He was hugely inspired by Andy Warhol. From an early age, Knight got hands-on drawing cartoons and airbrushing them on jeans for $25. He also created business logos. Tysen's documentary, The Art Of Hustle: Street Art Documentary, was a success that motivated him to become a regular gallery contributor, from being a street artist. It won the ''Best Feature Film" Award 2018 at the Oregon Documentary Film Festival. The production of the documentary, The Art Of Hustle, began in October 2016. Tysen worked sixty hours a week at a barbershop, and when he got days off on Sundays and Mondays, he filmed the documentary for nine months straight. Knight directed the documentary to deliver the inspirational story about all the endeavors and dedication required to achieve goals and dreams and also shed a positive light on street art and graffiti. Knight was responsible for a project, "Street Bench Art Pilot" conceived by the Palm Springs Public Arts Commission, the City Council Downtown Subcommittee, and Main Street Palm Springs, which involved decorating the benches throughout downtown Palm Springs. He created a series of benches with the theme, "Urban Desert Palms and Icons" on Palm Canyon Drive between Arenas Road and Museum Way. The icons included Garland, Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Frida Kahlo, and Lucille Ball. Knight launched his latest collection of paintings and drawings on October 23, 2019, at www.RobertJamesGallery.com. The works are part of his new Masterpiece Mash-Up Series where he re-imagines paintings from artists such as Pablo Picasso, Leonardo DaVinci, and Grant Wood. The collection debuted in NYC (Time Square) in the last quarter of 2019. Knight has worked with organizations such as Habitat for Humanity to build homes for the less fortunate. He has also been involved in activities like preparing meals alongside Midnight Mission for the homeless and mentoring young ‘troubled' kids to pursue arts at no cost. Knight partnered with The Palm Springs Unified School District and the BAM (Boys Art Mentorship) program in California and utilized his brand of street art to inspire and mentor at-risk youth. During this mentorship program, Tysen engaged students with an interactive program and taught them how to express themselves artistically, which has in return seen the drop-out rate of men of color in these programs reduced. Tysen Knight won the award for the category, Best Feature Film, at Oregon Documentary Film Festival, in 2018, for his documentary, The Art Of Hustle: Street Art Documentary. He also won the ''Best Director'' Award 2019 at the Marina Del Rey Film Festival for his second film The Art Of Hustle: Homeless Street Artist Documentary. Tysen also won the artist “Spotlight” award at Red Dot Miami (Art Basel Weekend) Tysen is also Artist Educator-in- Residence for the Palm Springs Art Museum: Jan 23- I February 9, 2020 (Sheffer/Scheffler Arts Education Space). We are grateful to have him as a guest on Black Canvas

What has worked and what hasn't, and as Shannon always says "Just throw a bunch of spaghetti at a wall and see what sticks". We also discuss balancing time between motherhood and a creative career, you all are going to love this episode so much! Shannon is a Canadian Artist, Educator, and Mentor living in Finland here is her BIO: Creating art is where I feel most like myself. In making art I transition to a deep place inside that is both energizing and calming. I connect to my most authentic self when I can create and make art without boundaries. The people and places I meet through travel largely inspire my work. My artworks translate memories into abstract expressions. I was always an art kid growing up and knew that a creative life was the path for me. The journey to becoming a full-time artist was a bit of a winding road, and I am grateful every day to have found my place in living this magnificent creative life. I am passionate about making art every day and mentoring other artists on their own creative journeys. As an art teacher, I found my passion for working with aspiring artists. Transitioning to a full-time artist has been the most exciting, scary and fulfilling experience of my creative career. I feel so fortunate to live this creative life where I also have the honour to mentor other artists on their own journeys. Gosh life can sometimes feel just… hard. It's not like we are not grateful, that is not what we are saying here. We are beyond grateful for this beautiful life. Sometimes we feel heavy or sometimes there is just too much to handle! AND sometimes life just throws a wrench in things and someone backs into your van in a parking lot and you think I don't even have time to figure out what just happened and what the f*ck I'm going to do about it! So if you're like us right now, and if life feels like a little too much here is our advice for you: Go the fuck to sleep. Get to bed. I've been hitting the pillow right after I get the kids to bed. Because I know that this month I need to be all there, on the top of my game. There is not room for burnt out Brandi or sick Brandi. In order to take care of others we need to take care of ourselves first. What does your self care routine look like? What do you do to keep peace of mind? What do you do to move your body? How can you get some effing sleep around here? For example: I love a quick run in the morning. I meditate here and there for 5 minute increments throughout the day and listen to self help books while driving. I put my self to bed asap because if I don't I might be the worst person in the world the next day!
