We are thrilled to be speaking to David Thurston on today's episode of Inside Design. David is the CEO and Founder of Pulp Riot, an international professional hair color line that was acquired by L'Oreal in a multi-million dollar deal. We had the privilege of hearing David speak at Cosentino's Global Design Summit and knew we had to bring him onto the show. Tune in to this episode to hear David share his business philosophies and what he has learned about success, stepping outside your comfort zone, and using social media to build an influential brand. IN THIS EPISODE:  [03:00] What comes first: The brand or product  [05:00] The spiral staircase philosophy and David's wishlist for success [09:20] Choosing to be uncomfortable and David's early steps to leave the corporate world and pursue success [18:28] How can creative entrepreneurs use social media and collaborate with your competitors [23:09] The power of design and Pulp Riot's unconventional product packaging [29:40] Travel, David's new book, and thoughts on reaching success at a young age KEY TAKEAWAYS: If you want to become successful you have to be comfortable with being uncomfortable. Being uncomfortable is a muscle you exercise by leaving your comfort zone and taking a step towards your goals and dreams. The photos you post on social media are like merchandise you're hanging outside your storefront. It's a way to entice people to engage with your brand. And your follower account is critical. No one wants to “go” into a store that's empty.  Success isn't reaching the top step and suddenly becoming satisfied. The fulfilling part is the climb up the staircase, not reaching the top. There's always another step to take.  RESOURCE LINKS: David Thurston Official Website BIO: David Thurston is a beauty industry entrepreneur, educator, and disrupter. David is often invited to give keynote presentations at events. His lectures typically aim to teach and inspire leaders using broadly applicable lessons he's learned on his journey to success, including lessons related to branding, social media, disruption, risk taking, entrepreneurship, and the digital revolution.  David's presentations can be tailor made to any industry. Back in Episode 126 of our Salon International 2019 Backstage Special, I had the delight to sit down for a short conversation with Alexis and David Thurston, the husband and wife duo and founders of the Pulp Riot hair colour line, Butterfly Loft salon in Los Angeles, and the Butterfly Circus traveling education team. In that episode they briefly touched upon the Pulp Riot tribe and brand. Well today I've invited them their back onto the show as I want to go much deeper into their early beginnings in hair, their relationship, Butterfly Loft Salon, education, and their journey to the success of founding the fastest growing colour line in the history of the beauty industry, Pulp Riot. For the past decade Alexis and David have been industry disruptors and innovators. Changing how professional hair products are created and marketed, how stylists are educated, and how communities of artists are created. They have been at the forefront of the digital revolution in the beauty industry, which has resulted in Pulp Riot becoming the fastest growing colour line in the history of the beauty industry. Whilst fast growing, David says of their journey to Pulp Riot, "It wasn't a straight line of success, it was a spiral staircase up." This is something they will be sharing much more of with us all today. This conversation with Alexis and David is great, packed full of insights into how they've gone about disrupting the beauty industry using yes, their mobile phones and social media. It blew my mind on what they have achieved in such a short space of time whilst maintaining a healthy family home life, too. I hope that listening in to this podcast today it will make you feel that you can achieve any goals you hunger for in the industry, but only if you have those magic ingredients of: desire, passion, drive and talent. So what are we waiting for, lets get to this by hitting that play button. Ever since 1984 as a fourteen year old boy I've been attending Salon International yearly. With it's buzzing atmosphere, educators on stages, seminars and exhibitors selling so many new and exciting products, it played a major part for me choosing a lifelong career in hairdressing. I'll be for ever grateful to it! So for today's podcast we took our pop-up studio backstage to the press room of Salon International 2019 and invited a selection of guests to join me to learn more on what the event meant to them for being there, too! Dropping into the press room throughout Day 1 of the event, we had a brilliant array of industry guests to share some great conversations with us. First up we had the current Fellowship for British Hairdressing president, Ken Picton, closely followed by David and Alexis Thurston of Pulp Riot, owner of Tuckwell & Co, Simon Tuckwell, Chris Williams International Colour Director at Rush Hair, and Ceilia Matthews and Zoe Tanner of Concept Magazine. Not only will todays podcast give you a true heads up on our guests experiences at Salon International, but you'll also get lashings of their personal background stories and industry thoughts. I hope that their conversations will get you ramped up for hairdressing and attending future Salon Internationals –– just like me back in 1984. So what are we waiting for, let's jump straight into it!   Thanks for Listening To share your thoughts: Leave a note in the comment section below.
