The week on The Panjwai Podcast we journey all the way to the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York to speak with Colonel Trey Rutherford. In 2012, then Lieutenant Colonel Trey Rutherford commanded 1-23 Infantry Battalion out of Joint Base Lewis McChord, Washington. We speak to Col. Rutherford about his military career leading up to Panjwai, and the extremely unique challenges faced by commanding a seven company battalion in the violent fight that was Panjwai. Rutherford tells us about his relationships with command and his company commanders, the impact 1-23 had on the battles-ace, and the unique political interactions with the power brokers of Panjwai. For those who served in Panjwai in 2012, this interview should answer some questions as to the “why” of what you endured, and hopefully provides some context for the challenges we faced. --------------------------------- The views expressed by the guests and hosts of this podcast do not represent the views of the Department of Defense or United States Government. ——————————————— Also Available on: Apple: https://buff.ly/3gTXet9 Spotify: https://buff.ly/2Kx6cjR Google: https://buff.ly/3b29R4z Podbean: https://buff.ly/2WoN0aF iHeartRadio: https://buff.ly/3nc5Wo1 Check out the video version of the podcast at : https://www.youtube.com/thepanjwaipodcast For maps, photos and more information about Panjwai go to : https://www.thepanjwaipodcast.com/about-panjwai You can donate and support the podcast on Patreon for as little as $3.00 a month. visit www.patreon.com/thepanjwaipodcast to learn more. This week The Panjwai Podcast returns with full episode once more with the start of Season 3. We are joined this week by 1SG Ronnie Morgan. 1SG Morgan served as an infantry squad leader in Bravo Company, 1-64th Armor Battalion at COP Sperwan Ghar and the Panjwai District Center in 2012. 1SG Morgan talks to us about his experiences before Panjwai, to include rotations in the Kunar, Uruzgan and Iraq before diving into the unique experience of the Panjwai 2012 Deployment. In Part One, we dive into 1SG Morgan's history, his journey to Panjwai and Sperwan Ghar, and his fight to get into the fight at Sperwan Ghar while assigned to the Panjwai District Center. He talks about the strain of seeing his platoon mates in 3rd Platoon killed and wounded while he sat at the District Center, yearning to return to his Platoon and take the fight to the enemy. Stay tuned for Part 2, where Morgan returns to his men and learns the harsh reality of warfare in the grape fields of Panjwai. This week on the podcast we are joined by CW3(R) Keith Knicely. Keith is a former Infantryman turned Apache pilot, just like Curtis, except Keith did his transition much earlier. After the invasion of Iraq and a time as a Drill Sergeant Keith made the transition to the Apache in time to fly overhead in Kandahar in 2012. Part of Task Force 2-6, Keith flew over Panjwai, Zharey, and Kandahar as a whole. Keith talks about his time in Kandahar, his time flying with the OH-58D Kiowa community, and the impact that deployment had on him as an Attack Pilot. Keith would later go on to become an instructor pilot at Flight School in Fort Rucker, and guess who was in his very first class? That's right. This week on The Panjwai Podcast we are privileged to have Thomas Underhill join us. Tom was a Combat Medic assigned to 1-5 Infantry out of Fort Wainwright, Alaska, and served in Dand District and Panjwai from April 2011 to March 2012. In Panjwai, Tom served at COP Sperwan Ghar where he and his platoon owned the western side of the AO and soon found that the realities of combat in Dand were not the same as the realities of combat in the Horn of Panjwai. Tom does a great job of highlighting those realities and offering some insight from his time as a Combat Medic and as a teammate to his brothers in arms, as well as a breathtaking account of the mass casualty event that sticks with him to this day. https://buff.ly/3hkfOg5 - The Military Times account of the effort to save Lieutenant Vogt --------------------------------- The views expressed by the guests and hosts of this podcast do not represent the views of the Department of Defense or United States Government. ——————————————— Also Available on: Apple: https://buff.ly/3gTXet9 Spotify: https://buff.ly/2Kx6cjR Google: https://buff.ly/2XX2Zxz Podbean: https://buff.ly/2WoN0aF iHeartRadio: https://buff.ly/3nc5Wo1 Check out the video version of the podcast at : https://buff.ly/3cJT2uo For maps, photos and more information about Panjwai go to : https://buff.ly/2M4T4n8 You can donate and support the podcast on Patreon for as little as $3.00 a month. visit https://buff.ly/2SM39c0 to learn more. We are extremely excited this week to welcome our very first Canadian Armed Forces veteran, former MCPL Chance Burles. Chance, who also hosts the podcast Tools for the Toolbox, joins us to talk about his time in the Canadian Army, his time in Panjwai, and general perspectives on combat in the AO and how those experiences are relevant going forward. We had a great time debating whether Robin Sparkles is a national treasure or not, and whether Hockey is a real sport (Just kidding, both are obviously true). The Canadian story is a huge part of the military history of Panjwai, and we are excited to finally start down the road towards telling it. On this week's episode we sit down with former 19K and Bayonet Company veteran Adam Uhre. Adam has the distinction of being a member of the 2nd Platoon, B/1-64 at Sperwan Ghar in 2012. 2/B/1-64 were a platoon of Tankers (M1 Abrams Crews) attached to Bayonet for the 2012 deployment. The hilarity ensues early on as the Infantry vs Armor rivalry spills out of every topic we discuss, and we take some time to dive deep into the ideas of talking about our experiences, and what it is like to feel displaced after an intense experience like Combat. Adam really helped us navigate the discussion of telling war stories, and the unique challenges faced by being a Tanker in an Infantry Company in an Armored battalion, attached to an Infantry battalion out of Washington. On a light infantry deployment. MSG Ho served as an EOD Technician on multiple deployments, ultimately serving as the team leader for a three man EOD team at COP Sperwan Ghar in Panwjai in 2012. Russ talks about the challenges of the EOD field, the benefits, and how he somehow prefers digging IEDs out of the ground. Weird.
