We end #HAHAugust 2: Double Take with a bucket list guest: director Fritz Kiersch, one of the important directors of the second New World Pictures era, helming CHILDREN OF THE CORN to TUFF TURF, and lastly, UNDER THE BOARDWALK. This is really a 2-part interview, with this being the second half, but, since we're releasing it first, so it's actually Part 1. Trust us, it will all make sense. In this part of the interview (Part 1), we discuss UNDER THE BOARDWALK and a non-New World film Kiersch directed prior, 1987's WINNERS TAKE ALL, including why Kiersch chose UNDER THE BOARDWALK for the third film in his 3-picture deal with the studio and why WINNERS TAKE ALL isn't a New World movie (when it really feels like one). In a two film span, there was plenty of drama, with hirings, firings, and the final days of New World Pictures, for which UNDER THE BOARDWALK was a victim.  One of the final theatrical offerings New World would release, the film got buried by a lack of publicity, along with HEATHERS. With the help of Fritz, we're trying to change all that. Don't miss this terrific conversation, with Fritz explaining the casting, working with Robert King, and the production of UNDER THE BOARDWALK, and what Fritz originally intended with WINNERS TAKE ALL. We also touch briefly on TUFF TUF, but for more on that film, you'll have to wait until the second part of this conversation (really, Part 1). Again, it makes sense!  For all the shows in Someone's Favorite Productions Podcast Network, head here:  https://www.someonesfavoriteproductions.com/.

The Swan and Dolphin are Marriott Bonvoy properties that have been at Walt Disney World since 1990 (their sister Marriott property, Swan Reserve, opened in 2021), and they hosted my family for a two-night stay at the Swan on a recent trip to Central Florida. As a good neighbor hotel officially with Disney Deluxe Resort benefits, the Swan is located in the EPCOT Crescent Lake resort area with easy walking distance (or Friendship boat) access to EPCOT, Disney's Hollywood Studios, Disney's BoardWalk, and Disney's Yacht & Beach Club resorts, plus bus service to Magic Kingdom (via Transportation and Ticket Center), Disney's Animal Kingdom, and Disney Springs. We continue HAHAugust 2: Double Take with an extremely underseen gem from the New World catalog, the Los Angeles set surf dramedy UNDER THE BOARDWALK, directed by Fritz Kiersch (CHILDREN OF THE CORN, TUFF TURF). Originally set to be released in 1988, New World eventually put this out at the same time as HEATHERS, the final two theatrical releases for the company.  Featuring the endless struggle between the coastal "locs" (or "lawks" as Letterboxd might have you believe) and the San Fernando Valley "Vals," the film concerns two star-crossed lovers caught between the two worlds just as the two sides meet in a local surf competition (or "compo" if you're cool). How does Allie (Danielle van Zerneck, LA BAMBA) deal with her feelings for Nick (Richard Joseph Paul, OBLIVION)? Well, not by looking after her cousin Andy (Keith Coogan, ADVENTURES IN BABYSITTING), that's for sure! Helping us discuss this Shakespearean tale is our good friend and New World superfan Justin Grams, who has been with this film from the very beginning!  Listen as we go through the film's history, share our thoughts on a potential sequel, have a discussion of the slang term "whease," and a whole lot more as we give this film the attention it deserves!  Special thanks to Fritz Kiersch, writer/producer Matthew Irmas, and producer Greg Blackwell for their assistance with this episode! Most of us don't realize this, but our dreams die long before we've even tried to make them happen. We think it happens after a failed business, a bad job, or a tough season, but it starts in childhood.  Without even noticing, we begin capping our ambitions to match our current circumstances. We play small, not because we want to, but because we've convinced ourselves the “big wins” are for other people. And when those limits follow us into adulthood, the damage is exponential, especially in business and investing. We end up making decisions based on fear, not opportunity. In this episode, I take you back to my eight-year-old self at a Monopoly board. That game shaped how I saw money and how I played for years.  I'll share why I avoided “Boardwalk,” not just in Monopoly, but in life. And I'll explain how changing my relationship with money completely rewired the way I play today.    Things You'll Learn In This Episode  The silent killer of ambition What subtle childhood messages about money and “realistic” dreams are still running the show in your financial life? “Boardwalk” isn't the goal How can reframing big-ticket investments change your strategy (and your stress) forever?  Breaking generational money habits Most parents accidentally teach their kids the wrong lessons about money. How do we create a legacy of confidence and wealth instead? The mindset shift that multiplies opportunity Why should we stop asking, “Can I afford this?” and start asking, “How can I make this work for me?”   About Your Host Remington Ramsey is a speaker, author, entrepreneur, and visionary in the world of real estate. Magic of Disney Animation returns to Disney's Hollywood Studios in 2026! Disney has officially announced plans for a new version of the classic attraction, and concept art has already surfaced. We'll be watching this one closely. [caption id="attachment_74591" align="aligncenter" width="1920"] Meanwhile, Walt Disney World has seen a flurry of updates. After surprise previews on July 18 and 19, the Disney Starlight Parade officially debuted at Magic Kingdom, bringing dazzling new floats and an all-new original character, Whimsy, to Main Street, U.S.A. Greg was there for the early shows, and his full breakdown is in this week's video. Test Track Reopens and BDX Droids Debut Test Track is back! The attraction officially reopened to all guests, boasting updated visuals and effects while keeping its familiar design-your-car feature. Over at Hollywood Studios, BDX Box Droids made another appearance, although some performances were delayed due to Florida's summer storms. Speaking of Hollywood Studios, more construction walls are now visible. Toy Story Land now features new construction walls near the restrooms—possibly signaling upcoming infrastructure work. Disneyland Turns 70 with Celebrations on Both Coasts Disneyland celebrated its 70th anniversary on July 17 with a full day of festivities. One of the highlights? A tribute to the Sherman Brothers playing inside Main Street Cinema. Even more magical: the official Disneyland 70th balloon completed its coast-to-coast flight, landing in California just in time for the anniversary.  Walt Disney: A Magical Life Opens. To mark the occasion, Disney+ released 17 new point-of-view ride-throughs, offering immersive experiences of classic Disneyland attractions in stunning 4 K resolution. It's a subtle but strong message: Disney+ is becoming the go-to source for park content. Disney+ Highlights and Rapid Fire News In addition to the Disneyland POV collection, Disney+ dropped: Zombies 4 SHARKFEST content for Shark Week A new daily news program: What You Need to Know The return of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse with brand-new episodes On the awards front, The Walt Disney Company earned 137 Emmy nominations, a huge haul across streaming and broadcast platforms. Foodies will appreciate the peach-flavored Dole Whip, which appeared on Dole Whip Day (July 17) at Disneyland. Over at Disney's BoardWalk, Greg found a unique banana Nutella dog that might just be the most unusual snack this month. Marvel and More: Trailers, Concerts, and Popcorn Buckets A double dose of excitement with the release of the TRON: Ares trailer, complete with a new Nine Inch Nails soundtrack single, and the full trailer for Pixar's Hoppers ahead of its 2026 debut. The Descendants and Zombies: Worlds Collide concert tour kicked off in San Diego, featuring stars from both franchises. And in popcorn bucket news, Greg tracked down new offerings in the parks, and the biggest popcorn bucket ever! Finally, the Fantastic Four make their big-screen return this weekend. In this episode, I'm joined by Meryl Vangelov, who lovingly stewards her family's iconic candy shop—Shriver's, the oldest business on the Ocean City, NJ boardwalk. From saltwater taffy to the scent of fresh fudge wafting through the summer air, Shriver's is pure Americana.Together, we explore the legacy of this beloved sweet shop, the magic of summer by the shore, and why the traditions we carry forward matter. One of the biggest inflection points for New World Pictures was when Roger Corman bought a former lumberyard and turned it into a studio to shoot BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS, which jumpstarted many careers from James Cameron to this week's guest, editor Daniel Gross! Daniel may have started with New World on BATTLE, but he went on to work on New World films like TUFF TURF, SORCERESS and HIGHPOINT while also editing trailers and promotional materials for the company after Corman sold it. He also edited the New World films THE ANNIHILATORS, PRETTY SMART, and UNDER THE BOARDWALK! We discuss Daniel's long career, which also dipped into Cannon Films, worked with legendary genre directors Greydon Clark and Larry Cohen, and edited SPACED INVADERS! From Banker to Thief: Russell Laffitte Finally Admits to Murdaugh Scheme The Banker Finally Blinks After two years of pretending he just didn't know any better, former Palmetto State Bank CEO Russell Laffitte has finally admitted what everyone else already knew: he's a crook. In a guilty plea deal made public this week, Laffitte confessed to six criminal counts, copping to a scheme with Alex Murdaugh that laundered and stole at least $3.5 million from vulnerable clients over an 11-year stretch. That's more than a decade of playing dumb while using his bank like a personal vending machine for fraud. But unlike previous courtroom performances, Laffitte now admits he wasn't just “naive” or “misled.” He knew exactly what he was doing—and it was illegal. This is a major shift from the story Laffitte has been trying to sell since the walls started closing in. Back in his 2022 trial, the man spent five hours on the stand denying everything but bad judgment. He painted himself as the village idiot of banking, manipulated by Murdaugh into funneling millions out of client settlements without understanding what was going on. He even pulled the classic “not intentionally” line when asked if he'd helped Murdaugh steal. But now, in black and white, Laffitte is admitting he did help. Intentionally. Repeatedly. And he knew it was against the law. This admission changes everything—especially for the people he hurt. It also spares them from enduring a second trial that would've rehashed painful memories and exposed them to more cross-examinations from Laffitte's legal team. Instead of dragging them through that again, Laffitte gets five years. It's a cut from the seven-year sentence he was serving before his conviction was overturned on a technicality. And it's a far cry from the nine to eleven years prosecutors were originally gunning for in their 2023 sentencing memo. That memo was brutal. Prosecutors said what made Laffitte stand out wasn't just the crimes—plenty of people commit bank fraud—it was the audacity to lie about it over and over. They detailed how Laffitte had spun tales in a civil deposition, during a disciplinary review, at his bond hearing, and at trial. And even after a jury found him guilty, he still tried to appeal, blaming everyone but himself. But now, thanks to this plea deal, there will be no retrial, no appeals, and no last-ditch arguments about ineffective legal counsel. Laffitte has waived all of it. It's a legal dead-end for him and a sigh of relief for prosecutors and victims alike. And let's talk about the company he kept. Laffitte wasn't pulling these moves with some faceless fraudster—he was in business with Alex Murdaugh, arguably South Carolina's most radioactive defendant. By the time Laffitte's case came up for a retrial, Murdaugh was already a convicted murderer and convicted thief. The idea of facing a jury while being tied at the hip to that guy? Not a good look. In the background of all this are the stories of the people they stole from. The Plyler sisters, Hannah and Alania, had their settlement money drained. Natarsha Thomas lost $350,000. Arthur Badger, left to raise six children after his wife's death in a crash, had over a million siphoned from his rightful settlement. Laffitte helped reroute that money through his bank into accounts he and Murdaugh controlled, like some twisted game of Monopoly where the victims always lost and the banker pocketed Boardwalk. Emails between Laffitte and Murdaugh discussing Badger's money were described by attorney Mark Tinsley as especially damning. Which is why, Tinsley says, this guilty plea isn't a surprise—it's damage control. For the victims and their attorneys, this deal is about more than just prison time. It's closure. It's avoiding another public trial. And most importantly, it's proof in writing that Laffitte wasn't just a clueless banker caught in the crossfire—he was an active, informed participant in a massive fraud. Now, even as he faces civil lawsuits where he continues to deny responsibility, his federal guilty plea will hang around his neck like a cement necktie. Because no matter how many depositions he gives, the ink on that 10-page agreement doesn't lie. Russell Laffitte may have spent years denying, deflecting, and dodging the truth. But this week, he finally ran out of exits. #AlexMurdaugh #RussellLaffitte #PalmettoStateBank #WhiteCollarCrime Want to listen to ALL our podcasts AD-FREE?
