But I also talk about the lack of convenience that is the result.Support the Show.

BLUF: VENEZUELA BEGINS PREPARATION FOR OPERATIONS WITHIN ESEQUIBO. -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-Europe: In Germany, the Ministry of the Interior for the state of Saxony-Anhalt has mandated that all naturalization candidates must declare their support for Israel as part of the naturalization process. Specifically, those seeking German citizenship in this region will be required to provide a written statement declaring their support for Israel. If this oath is not provided, this will lead to the denial of naturalization for those seeking German citizenship. AC: The documentation released so far indicates that candidates are not free to choose their own wording, as local authorities have been mandated to set the specific wording used in the oath sworn to Israel.South America: Venezuela demonstrates several indications and warnings of an impending invasion. Venezuela has declared the Esequibo region to be Venezuelan territory and has added the region to their official national map. Several officials have also declared that Venezuela will be creating a military zone in the region and issuing new ID cards to those living in remote villages throughout the area.-Analyst Comments-In terms of a military invasion, the actions by Venezuela may not result in much news due to the remote nature of the terrain. Most of this region is uncharted territory; there are no major cities or major highways in this “disputed” area, with this region hosting some of the largest untouched jungle on the continent. As such, Venezuela can dominate the terrain by creating FOBs in critical areas, by which oil surveys can be protected. From these Centers of Gravity, Venezuelan troops can occupy the region, without exercising complete control over every inch of the terrain. This may be good enough for Venezuela's oil-pursuing intentions, but this does present vulnerabilities that can be exploited by a much smaller force. However, this extremely remote terrain means that Venezuela's actions can technically be described as an “invasion” or “occupation”, but will likely not take the form that many might think. Small groups of Venezuelan troops have already entered this area over the past few years, under the guise of combating illegal mining, so sporadic Venezuelan presence in the region is not unheard of. For more significant operations, Venezuela may place FOBs/firebases in the middle of the jungle and operate for weeks, with no opposition. What is likely to occur first is the establishment of Forward Arming and Refueling Points (FARPs) near the border, or just inside the Esequibo. This will be crucial to allow Venezuelan troops logistics hubs to refuel and stage operations for the construction of bases of operations within the region.Regarding concerns this invasion may have for the Homefront, the nationstate of Guyana is largely influenced by the controlling interests of ExxonMobil, due to the extremely oil-rich nature of the region but especially since the discovery of extensive petroleum fields in 2015. ExxonMobil produces a total of roughly 600,000+ BPD from the nation of Guyana (including extensive offshore production facilities). As a reminder for perspective, OPEC+ recently announced a voluntary production cut of 1 million BPD (on top of the 1 million BPD cut already in place). The seriousness of this situation could influence the global oil markets in ways not previously anticipated, as Venezuelan military operations raise the stakes of an already tumultuous oil market. History confirms that petroleum wars tend to result in Large Scale Combat Operations (LSCO) at some point, the gravity of which is usually ignored by a populace in the days leading up to a regional conflagration.

Crime is happening here on the East End, especially crimes involving the theft of luxury vehicles. Daniel Hartman of the Quogue Village Police Department, and (by text message) Det. Sgt. Herman Lamison of the Southampton Village Police Department join the editors to discuss how to avoid being a victim of this and other crimes and scams.

Before "Shang-Chi," before "Ms. Marvel," Asian American film gave us the superhero Lumpia Man. On the latest episode of Saturday School (where this season we're exploring Asian American sci-fi), we revisit "Lumpia" (2003) and its sequel "Lumpia with a Vengeance" (2020). "Lumpia" was shot in director Patricio Ginelsa's hometown of Daly City with his high school friends. In this comic book movie, narrated by Joy Bisco of "The Debut," the Americanized Filipinos are bullying the Filipino FOBs. But luckily, the FOBs are protected by Lumpia Man, a silent teenager whose weapon is lumpia. It's a charming time capsule of NorCal Fil-Am culture in the 90s, with the DJs, house parties, karaoke and K-mart. The home-made film developed enough of a cult following that Ginelsa ran a successful Kickstarter campaign to crowdfund a sequel about decades later. He got the old crew back together, added some trained actors (including Danny Trejo) and built out a larger "Lumpia" cinematic universe with a new generation of characters.

In this episode we go over a relatively new concept called 'the fear of being single' (FOBS) which suggests that individuals with higher amounts of this trait, i.e. afraid of being single, anxiety, loneliness, are less selective with their partner choices and willing to go on many more dates to find a partner, regardless of who it is. This specific paper looks at if this FOBS trait is linked to physical attractiveness such that less attractive individuals have higher FOBS and thus are much less selective in dating. As it turns out, the results are not as intuitive as you may have guessed!Spielmann, Stephanie S.; Maxwell, Jessica A.; MacDonald, Geoff; Peragine, Diana; Impett, Emily A. (2019). Author's note: Today is my 36th birthday! If you're curious to see what I read and drink (or you're in the mood to spoil the crankiest author on the Internet) here's my book wishlist and my scotch wishlist. (Sad fact: Due to supply chain challenges, scotch is expected to triple in price later this year, so now is the time!)Capitalism is evolving from corporations owning the means of production to also owning the products themselves. We used to have the option to buy movies — now, in order to legally enjoy a movie forever, you have to pay Netflix a monthly fee for the rest of your life.Document processors like Word and editing suites like Adobe used to be purchasable — now I will have to pay $4,800 over the next forty years to submit books to my publishers, and my wife will have to sacrifice more than $25,000 to a $313 billion company just so she can keep her job. It's all part of corporate America's rapid shift to subscription serfdom. And Toyota just dipped their claws in the pond. The scam of the centuryToyota was founded in 1937.Today it's a $295 billion corporation. They netted over $3.1 billion in the past year. And they're desperate to get their hands on that sweet recurring revenue. They're not the first automaker to milk their customers:BMW tried it with Apple CarPlay.Tesla tried it with Internet Connectivity.Mercedes tried it with EQS rear-wheel steering.(Imagine having to pay for steering.)Now, Toyota wants its customers to pay a monthly fee to start their own cars.Since at least 2010, Toyotas have had the option to include remote start if you pay for the right key FOB.Not anymore. Now you have to get their Remote Connect subscription. But here's the really twisted thing: The key FOB uses radio waves to connect to the car — it doesn't require Toyota's Remote Connect servers at all.The really scandalous thing? The fee will be charged to all vehicles built after November 12, 2018.In other words, people are paying for a product that they once got for free, but if they don't continue to pay for the product they've already paid for, they don't get to use the product they've already paid for.Imagine if you paid $50/year for a Medium subscription, and suddenly Medium emailed you and said, “Hey, we know you already paid to read Jared A. Brock's articles this year, but if you want to keep reading Jared A. Brock's articles, you're going to have to pay another $80/year.”How is this even legal?Consumers didn't ask for thisBut corporations don't care, because they don't work for consumers. They're anti-human eternal entities whose legal reason for existing is to extract wealth from the commons and deliver it to elite shareholders.Their poverty-making model is simple:The elite shareholder class impoverished the contributive masses via systemic inflation and purposeful wage stagnation.Second, they got us hooked on monthly payment plans for the things we wanted and needed but couldn't afford to buy lump-sum anyway. (When was the last time you paid cash for a car or even a piece of furniture?)Now, corporate elites are working on a new scheme to steal our time, impoverish our lives, and ram us back into serfdom once and for all:The end of ownership.I have argued for some time that streamers like Netflix and Prime are illegal monopolies — by keeping their products exclusively rent-by-the-month and never making them available to purchase anywhere else, they are systemically excluding people from participating in culture. There are tens of millions of people who can't get approved for credit cards or can't afford a $100+ annual fee for life just to watch a movie every once in a while. But the real danger happens once any human necessity is commodified as an investment — it's eventually sold to the highest bidder, which is always an extractive, tax-evading, anti-human, multinational investment corporation.A mattress might sell for $600 today, but when it can make an investor $99/month on a 36-month lease, that mattress is suddenly “worth” $3,600.Now imagine what it's going to do to house prices.Don't forget the game plan for subscription serfdom:We do all the productive work.We do all the purchasing that keeps the economy going. They get all the profits. They own all the products.A societal structure in which the vast majority own nothing and have to toil for rich elites just to survive already has a name: It's called feudalism. And remember: The end of ownership for the masses is just the beginning of ownership for the elites. They ultimately want to own the same thing that their feudal ancestors owned:They want to own us.Calls to actionFirst: Publicly refuse to do business with any product-selling company that switches to a recurring revenue model and won't let you purchase their products at a reasonable cost. Refuse to give your hard-earned money to any business that won't outright sell you the things you want and need.I hope word spreads and no one on earth buys a Toyota ever again, that the company goes bankrupt and sends a message that terrifies every corporation on earth: Don't participate in subscription serfdom or we serfs will end your business. So please join me in boycotting Toyota.Second: To avoid wasting years of your life paying to rent cheaper-quality versions in the future, acquire buy-it-for-life-quality possessions now.Third: Get into politics (or bankroll candidates and new parties to do so) and pass a law called the Right to Own Act.Fourth: Start counter-companies that sell one-time services and fully-owned, buy-it-for-life products. We need to make some radical changes to the direction of society, my friends.Otherwise, pretty soon, we won't be allowed to own cars at all, never mind key FOBs. On this episode of What We Brought Home, our guest shares a tremendous loss from one of his Iraq deployments and how he's learned to cope with the untimely passing of friends and fellow Soldiers. This episode contains some common military terms that might not be familiar to everyone. Here is a quick explanation to provide context: Patrol Base - a small, often temporary, base, usually closer to a city or town, that houses dozens of personnel. They are usually fortified with some type of wall and a gate. Units use them to rest, refit and launch operations. FOB - Forward Operating Base - usually a medium size fortified base that houses hundreds of personnel. These are typically surrounded by large walls and are heavily defended. FOBs usually have many more resources than patrol bases like a better chow hall, a motor pool for vehicle repairs, an internet cafe, phones to call home, more comfortable accommodations, etc. Gold Star Family - one that has lost an immediate family member in the line of duty of military service. Training - Our storyteller this week references an event that happens during "training". For those who haven't experienced it, it might be hard to envision what training actually is and what the heck our storyteller is talking about. Army training is typically conducted in designated areas on base, usually out in the woods or on an arms range. During training, there are specific tasks that units are out there to practice. These tasks usually occupy most of the day but there is often some down time in between events. It's often during these in between times when young soldiers might feel inspired to challenge their leaders (often new Platoon Leaders (PLs)) to a friendly test of their hand to hand combatives skills. This is usually a morale booster and the PLs play along as they are happy to see their units working together to accomplish a common goal. Many times, a whole platoon will gang up on their new PL and place them in a nearby mud pit or tie them up or draw funny things on their face. It's considered a right of passage for most PLs, especially in the Infantry, and it usually (but not always) means that your soldiers feel generally positive towards you. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/whatwebroughthome/message
