Fifteen year-olds can be… a lot. It's often when a rebellious streak first emerges, when a kid might start sneaking out, breaking curfew or perhaps,  skipping school and lying about their age to become an interpreter for the American soldiers occupying your hometown in Afghanistan. Or at least that's what being a teenager was like for Nasirullah Safi, who grew up in the Kunar Valley between Afghanistan and Pakistan, a land plagued by constant conflict and war. But guided by the advice of his father and the dreams of his mother, he left Kunar and found his way to another valley: the Willamette. Many Roads to Here is a production of The Immigrant Story.  This episode was produced, edited and hosted by Selene Ross. Audio post-production done by Gregg Palmer. The original interview was conducted by Sankar Raman in the fall of 2023. Many thanks to St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Beaverton, Oregon for the use of their space. This episode is a part of a series exploring the stories and experiences of Asian Americans. It is produced as part of the Oregon Rises Above Hate coalition and made possible by a generous contribution by Anne Naito-Campbell.  To learn more about the Oregon Rises Above Hate Coalition, please visit https://oregonrisesabovehate.com. This week we welcome Major Tom Schueman, founder of Patrol Base Abbate.  Maj. Schueman shares a story of brotherhood and commitment, personified by the acts of heroic veterans during the drawdown and exit from Afghanistan.  Like so many veterans, Maj. Schueman's mission to rescue his interpreter, Zak, was an example of an American servicemember's promise to his allies.  Zak, and his family, braved the a trek from Kunar, through Taliban controlled territory, to Kabul.  Once there, Maj. Schueman financed their stay in a small apartment as they repeatedly tried to gain access to Hamid Karzai International Airport.  On the third day of chaos, with the help of military members on the ground, contacts back in the United States, and a fearless Afghan driver, Tom got the word  that he had been waiting for, "We have them".  We commemorate the 20th anniversary of 9/11 with this story of hope, and the example of what it means to be a GWOT veteran. We also discuss the mission of Patrol Bas Abbate.  PB Abbate offers free-of-cost retreats in "Big Sky Country" for service members and eligible veterans, where they can reconnect with their warrior spirit, foster community through shared interests, and re-discover purpose in service to each other, their families, and their communities.  PB Abbate also offers local chapters in major cities across the country to help their members serve their communities and foster connectedness through a mutually beneficial network.  For more information about Patrol Base Abbate, and to register to get involved, go to https://www.pbabbate.org/.Support the show and get your Bulletproof Veteran apparel at https://amzn.to/3BA3dx9 or see all the available shirts at http://bulletproofveteran.com/apparel

Bing West has always loved American Grunts.   Ever since he led a platoon of Marines in Vietnam, he's had an affinity for the man (and now woman) on the ground at the leading edge of America's wars. That's why he wrote the 1972 book "The Village," about 17 months in the lives of a squad of Marines fighting in Binh Nghia, Vietnam. He wrote for the Marine Corps as well, publishing the service's official counterinsurgency manual.   Throughout our post-9/11 wars, he continued to champion the Grunt.   From 2003 through 2008, he made 16 extended trips to Iraq, going on patrols and writing three books and numerous articles about the war. His 2005 book "No True Glory," is the definitive frontline account of the Battle for Fallujah. His 2008 book "The Strongest Tribe," will hold up for generations as a comprehensive history of the American war in Iraq.   From 2007 through 2011, he made numerous trips to Afghanistan, each time living and traveling with ground units. His 2011 book "The Wrong War," is a definitive account of American missteps and successes in Afghanistan.   Bing was in Afghanistan on September 8, 2009 when Marine Sergeant Dakota Meyer singlehandedly evacuated or provided cover for dozens of US service members  in Kunar during the Battle of Ganjgal. Hearing the story, Bing investigated and wrote about Dakota's account. He pushed the Marine Corps, the Department of Defense, Congress, and the White House for Dakota to receive the Medal of Honor and he did, in a White House ceremony on September 15, 2011.   Aside from his writing, he's had an influential career as a counterinsurgency analyst, first for the Rand Corporation and later as an assistant to Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis, Bing's good friend.   Meanwhile, he's continued to write, both fiction and non-fiction, telling the stories of the American Marine and Soldier in Afghanistan and Iraq.   On Episode 58 of the podcast, Bing joins his old friend Joe Buccino, host of the podcast, to talk about caring leadership, the end of the war of Afghanistan, the Army's focus on Large Scale Combat Operations, and why Army leaders should stop tweeting.   It's a great talk, a rich discussion with lessons and wisdom for all military leaders.   Please subscribe to the 18th Airborne Corps podcast on Apple Podcasts (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-18th-airborne-corps-podcast/id1547996961), Spotify (https://open.spotify.com/show/15BMwodlZc84yiPK0AYSHq), or Stitcher (https://www.stitcher.com/show/the-doomsday-clock). The AstraZeneca hoarding issue rose to the fore after India's catastrophic virus surge that has overwhelmed its healthcare system. *) Rebel group overruns Myanmar army base near Thai border A prominent ethnic rebel group has attacked and captured a military base in eastern Myanmar near the Thai border. Residents reported hearing gunfire and explosions in Karen state near the Salween River, along Myanmar's border with Thailand. *) HRW report accuses Israel of committing apartheid crimes Human Rights Watch has accused Israel of pursuing policies of apartheid and persecution against Palestinians amounting to crimes against humanity. Human Rights Watch said its report was not aimed at comparing Israel with apartheid-era South Africa but rather at assessing "whether specific acts and policies" constitute "apartheid" as defined under international law. Tel Aviv rejected the report that was released weeks after the ICC said it will investigate war crimes in Israeli-occupied areas of West Bank and Gaza. *) Rocket attack in Afghanistan wounds scores of children A rocket hit the provincial governor's compound in Afghanistan's eastern Kunar province during a religious ceremony, wounding at least 16 children. Officials said three Afghan security force members and religious affairs officials were also wounded in the attack blamed on Taliban militants. 27JUN2010: Serving as a squad leader with C/2-327IN, SSG Eric Shaw and his men stepped out of FOB Joyce early in the morning kicking off Operation Strong Eagle. With a goal of disrupting insurgent activity in the Ghaki valley, Shaw and his men were assisting the Afghan forces in what would be the clearance of a village called Daridam. Moving on foot with a line of vehicles a distance behind them, SSG Shaw and his men moved into the deadly valley with their Afghan partners. The Ghaki was known to be an enemy stronghold with estimated enemy fighters numbering in the hundreds. As expected, as they neared the outskirts of the city, the Taliban opened fire. The initial volley of small arms and RPGs seriously wounded one Afghan Soldier while Shaw and his men sprang into action. As they sat in the open, Shaw directed his men to move back to the cover of the armored vehicles and ran forward, under fire, to pass directions to his Afghan partners. As enemy fire intensified, Shaw and his squad regrouped behind the relative cover of the vehicles when he noticed that some of the Afghans were still caught in the open. This handful of Afghan soldiers were caught in the open and taking fire from multiple sides, confused and not knowing where to go. Without hesitation, Shaw jumped up in an effort to move through the wall of enemy fire to rescue the cut off Afghan platoon. During this act, SSG Eric Shaw was hit and killed by enemy fire but his valiant effort saved the lives of that cut off Afghan platoon. For his heroic act that day, SSG Eric Shaw would be awarded, posthumously, the Distinguished Service Cross, the first in the 101st Airborne Division since the Vietnam war.

25JAN2008: Serving as a Special Forces Weapons Sergeant, SSG Robert Miller and his team were conducting a patrol through the Gowardesh Valley in eastern Afghanistan when they came into contact with 15-20 Taliban fighters. Miller, manning a Mk-19 automatic grenade launcher, engaged the enemy forces and assisted in directing air strikes to eliminate the threat. Following the engagement, Miller set off on foot as point man for a small element to conduct a battle damage assessment from the strike. As the group, moving through a deep valley, neared the strike location, enemy forces all along the hillside opened fire. Caught in an ambush from upwards of 100 Taliban fighters shooting down from covered positions, Miller and his team were stuck in the kill zone. Without hesitation or regard for his own safety, SSG Miller moved to an exposed location to lay down suppressive fire, allowing his team to exit the ambush. Maneuvering to engage the dug-in enemy forces, Miller was hit in the torso but wouldn't stop. He continued firing and pushing forward, killing at least ten enemy fighters and drawing fire from the entire force. As US and Afghan forces moved to a more defensible position, SSG Robert Miller was struck and killed by enemy fire. For sacrificing himself to allow his men to exit the kill zone, SSG Robert Miller would be awarded, posthumously, the Medal of Honor.

08SEPT2009: Serving as a part of an embedded training team in Afghanistan, Cpl. Dakota Meyer was tasked with maintaining security by a rally point as other members of his team pushed into a village named Ganjgal. Expecting to meet with village elders, the element of US and Afghan forces quickly came under intense enemy fire from an estimated 50 Taliban fighters. Hearing that the US team was cut off, Meyer and another Marine took off in a vehicle to assist. As their vehicle drew fire, Meyer manned the machine gun and hammered enemy positions despite rounds impacting all around him. Each trip into the fight, Meyer identified and helped evacuate groups of wounded or trapped Afghan soldiers. During these movements, he was in constant contact with the enemy, engaging some at point blank range. After the vehicle took too much damage to return, Meyer swapped for a new truck and went back into the fight two more times. Having already been wounded in the army, Meyer dismounted the vehicle near where he expected his cut off Marines to be. As he neared the position, he spotted a Taliban fighter attempting to drag the bodies away. After killing that fighter, Meyer began the recovery of his four fallen brothers. For saving the lives of so many Afghan and American warriors during that six hour fight, Cpl Dakota Meyer would be awarded the Medal of Honor.

For Nearly two decades America has been in war with Afghanistan. Join us with Ret. Colonel Chris Kolenda, the man who pioneered a new approach to counterinsurgency, led soldiers in successful battles against the Taliban and was later hand picked by the US government to be involved in early talks with the Taliban. We will cover the impact of the war, how it can be ended, and recent events with our military that have made headlines. Moderated by former Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson. Ret. Colonel Christopher Kolenda recently served as the Senior Advisor on Afghanistan and Pakistan to Under Secretary of Defense Michèle Flournoy, and three 4* Generals in Afghanistan. He was decorated with the Department of Defense's highest civilian award for his work on strategy. In 2007-08, he commanded an 800-solider task force in Kunar and Nuristan provinces where he pioneered an innovative approach to counterinsurgency in one of the most violent areas of the country. His unit is the only one in the history of the war to have motivated a large insurgent group to stop fighting and join the government. His advice has been adopted by three Secretaries of Defense and the President of the United States. He was selected to be the Secretary of Defense's representative in exploratory talks with the Taliban from 2010-2013. He is the only American to have fought the Taliban in combat and engaged them in high-level diplomacy. Secretary Jeh Johnson was appointed by President Obama on December 23, 2013, following confirmation by the U.S. Senate by a vote of 78-16. Between 2013 and 2017 he served as Secretary of Homeland Security. Previously, Secretary Johnson was appointed by President Obama to be General Counsel of the Department of Defense from 2009 through 2012. In that position, Johnson was one of the legal architects for the U.S. military's counter terrorism mission during President Obama's first term. 28JUL2005: LT Michael Murphy was leading his team of four Navy SEALS as Operation Red Wing kicked off. Inserted deep into enemy territory, LT Murphy and his team were tasked with surveillance and reconnaissance of a series of buildings thought to house Taliban leadership ahead of Marine movement into the area. After a successful insertion, LT Murphy's team was discovered by a goat herder. Hoping for the best, the team released the Afghan male who promptly reported their position to the local Taliban leadership. Before long, the entire SEAL team was under heavy fire from a numerically superior enemy force. LT Murphy led his team in a valiant defense, being wounded multiple times in the process. Due to the rugged terrain, the team was unable to call for reinforcements or even alert American units of their dire situation. As enemy forces closed in on the SEALS, LT Murphy made a decision to risk his life in order to save his men. Recognizing that reinforcements were needed or they would be overrun, LT Murphy moved to an exposed position in the hopes his radio calls would be transmitted. He was right. Despite being shot multiple times while making the call, LT Murphy stayed on the line even signing off with a 'thank you'. Now mortally wounded but with reinforcements on the way, LT Michael Murphy would continue to fight until he died of his wounds. For giving his life in an attempt to save his brothers, LT Michael Murphy would be awarded, posthumously, the Medal of Honor.

In 2010 Kevin Mott's unit arrived in Afghanistan's Kunar province for a deployment that would see months of hard fighting. At one point, he was even wounded so badly—shot in the head, four fractured vertebrae, a broken leg, a torn labrum—that he was sent back to the United States for medical care. After he returned, the battalion conducted a mission aimed at clearing an area known to have a strong Taliban presence. Kevin shares the story of his platoon's heavy fighting as they worked their way toward their objective of Barawala Kalay.

Paradise of Song Ahangar was a mighty swordsmith who lived in one of Afghanistan's remote eastern valleys. In time of peace he made steel ploughs, shoed horses and, above all, he sang. The songs of Ahangar, who is known by different names in various parts of Central Asia, were eagerly listened to by the people of the valleys. They came from the forests of giant walnuts trees, from the snowcapped Hindu-Kush, from Qataghan and Badakhshan, from Khanabad and Kunar, from Herat and Paghman, to hear his songs. Above all, the people came to hear the song of all songs, which was Ahangar's Song of the Valley of Paradise. This song had a haunting quality, and a strange lilt, and most of all it had a story which was so strange that people felt they knew the remote Valley of Paradise of which the smith sang. Often they asked him to sing it when he was not in the mood to do so, and he would refuse. Sometimes people asked him whether the Valley was truly real, and Ahangar could only say: "The Valley of the Song is as real as real can be." "But how do you know?" the people would ask, "Have you ever been there?" To Ahangar, and to nearly all the people who heard him, the Valley of the Song was, however, real, real as real can be. Aisha, a local maiden whom he loved, doubted whether there was such a place. So, too, did Hasan, a braggart and fearsome swordsman who swore to marry Aisha, and who lost no opportunity of laughing at the smith. One day, when the villagers were sitting around silently after Ahangar had been telling his tale to them, Hasan spoke: "If you believe that this valley is so real, and that it is, as you say, in those mountains of Sangan yonder, where the blue haze rises, why do you not try to find it?". "It would not be right, I know that," said Ahangar. "You know what it is convenient to know, and do not know what you do not want to know!" shouted Hasan. "Now, my friend, I propose a test. You love Aisha, but she does not trust you. She has no faith in this absurd Valley of yours. You could never marry her, because when there is no confidence between man and wife, they are not happy and all manner of evils result." "Do you expect me to go to the valley, then?" asked Ahangar. "Yes," said Hasan and all the audience together. "If I go and return safely, will Aisha consent to marry me?" asked Ahangar. "Yes," murmured Aisha. So Ahangar, collecting some dried mulberries and a scrap of bread, set off for the distant mountains. He climbed and climbed, until he came to a wall which encircled the entire range. When he had ascended its sheer sides, there was another wall, even more precipitous then the first. After that there was a third, then a fourth, and finally a fifth wall. Descending on the other side, Ahangar found that he was in a valley, strikingly similar to his own. People came out to welcome him, and as he saw them, Ahangar realized that something very strange was happening. Months later, Ahangar the Smith, walking like an old man, limped into his native village, and made for his humble hut. As word of his return spread throughout the countryside, people gathered in front of his home to hear what his adventures had been. Hasan the swordsman spoke for them all, and called Ahangar to his window. There was a gasp as everyone saw how old he had become. "Well, Master Ahangar, and did you reach the Valley of Paradise?" "I did." "And what was it like?" Ahangar, fumbling for his words, looked at the assembled people with a weariness and hopelessness that he had never felt before. He said: "I climbed and I climbed, and I climbed. When it seemed as though there could be no human habitation in such a desolate place, and after many trials and disappointments, I came upon a valley. This valley was exactly like the one in which we live. And then I saw the people. Those people are not only like us people: they are the same people. For every Hasan, every Aisha, every Ahangar, every anybody whom we have here, there is another one, exactly the same in that valley." "These are likenesses and reflections to us, when we see such things. But it is we who are the likeness and reflection of them -- we who are here, we are their twins..." Everyone thought that Ahangar had gone mad through his privations, and Aisha married Hasan the swordsman. Ahangar rapidly grew old and died. And all the people, every one who had heard this story from the lips of Ahangar, first lost heart in their lives, then grew old and died, for they felt that something was going to happen over which they had no control and from which they had no hope, and so they lost interest in life itself. It is only once in a thousand years that this secret is seen by man. When he sees it, he is changed. When he tells its bare facts to others, they wither and die out. People think that such an event is a catastrophe, and so they must not know about it, for they cannot understand [such is the nature of their ordinary life] that they have more selves than one, more hopes than one, more chances than one -- up there, in the Paradise of the Song of Ahangar, the mighty smith.

“Sleep deprivation during military deployment is archaic, harmful and institutionally unavoidable. It may aggravate, and even cause, PTSD in veterans returning from combat. Why’s it taking so long for military brass to take action?” – Peter S. Green, journalist Award-winning journalist Peter S. Green investigated sleep deprivation during military deployment and how “circadian scarring” among our troops may aggravate, and even cause, PTSD in veterans returning from combat. Green asks, “Why is it taking so long for military brass to take action?” During today’s show our guest, Miguel Reece, Retired US Air Force Major and former VA civil servant, will address this and other related issues that are adversely affecting our servicemen and servicewomen while on and returning from deployment. A case study: U.S. Army Corporal Sean Bedingfield Through the long summer of 2008, U.S. Army Corporal Sean Bedingfield led a fire team at a dust-choked combat operations post in the craggy terrain of Kunar province in northeastern Afghanistan. His platoon was five men short of its full 32-person complement, and would catch incoming fire several times a day from Taliban insurgents in the surrounding hills. Full-day patrols sent Bedingfield and his squad 3,000 feet or more up into the mountains, and another 3,000 feet back down to their camp. At night, they stood watch to ward off insurgents. Often, they’d double-staff the watchtowers to ensure no one fell asleep. “If one guy dozed, the other’s job was to slap him around to wake him up,” Bedingfield said.
