This week in the studio my guest had yearned to be a Royal Marine Commando since childhood, and in 1986 he enlisted and did just that. After passing the grueling training course my guest earned his coveted Green Beret in 1987, but that's where the real story begins. My guest spent the next 30 years of his life on Active Duty serving in every rank from Recruit to Captain in the Royal Marines. He has participated in combat rotations to Kosovo, Afghanistan, and was in the lead element in the invasion of Iraq. After Active Duty this guest transitioned into the reserves but at the same time completed a degree in acting and has been featured on stage and screen in roles that were designed to spotlight mental health and PTS in former and active soldiers. His latest endeavor is an absolutely incredible film called SUNRAY which was created by a collection of former Royal Marine Commandos turned filmmakers and actors. This movie challenges the perception of mental health and the struggles that soldiers face when reintegrating back into civilian life. It is with great excitement that I introduce into the studio Tip Cullen.

This podcast interview focuses on product innovation that has the power to unlock performance and retain great talent. My guest is Antony Thompson, Co-Founder and former CEO of Loopin.  Antony has spent a lifetime in service of others, first as a Royal Marine Commando and then as a business consultant focused on creating incredible value for the teams he worked with. After leaving the Marines, he spent time as a management consultant; fulfilling the role of a reporting manager on a £5bn infrastructure portfolio. In May 2018, he founded Vanguard Global Solutions focused on delivering people strategies, encompassing coaching, workshops, and programs.  But then COVID kicked in - completely disrupting their business model. And that event sparked the idea behind Loopin, which he and his co-founder Ben, founded in June 2020.  Their 2030 mission: provide 1 million managers the ability to reduce burnout and attrition in their teams. And this inspired me, and hence I invited Antony to my podcast. We explore the growing challenge so burnout and attrition in the market and why traditional solutions can only help us come so far. Antony then shares what needs to change and why given their experiences from the Marines and the characteristics they've uncovered about what creates high-performing overachievers.  He talks about the lessons learned from the pivot they needed to pull through. And lastly, he shares what it takes to build a successful startup and why ego doesn't have a place in that.  Here's one of his quotes One of the things which we conceptualize was this bubble idea where this bubble would rise to the top of the platform. We said, look, that's the most important thing that you as the business leader need to do today because that's the thing that's going to turn the needle. And it was with that mindset: It's all about getting the quality in engagement, surveys don't work. They're lagging indicators. Maybe there's an opportunity to create something which is a leading indicator that gives you some foresight. We're very good at doing financial forecasting. But what if we could do people or human forecasting… During this interview, you will learn four things: Why are we leaning too much toward lagging indicators when we should be focused on leading indicators What the three ingredients are for high performance, and which one, in particular, to double down on How to separate the false signs of success from the real ones How to go about having the courage to have the really difficult conversations For more information about the guest from this week: Antony Thompson Website: Loopin Subscribe to the Daily SaaS Reflection Get my free, 1 min daily reflection on shaping a B2B SaaS business no one can ignore. Mark was part of the physical training team within the Royal Marine Commando training school before taking his ideas about human development into civiian life with a major focus on sport. As always, it is a fascinating conversation...in this episode we cover...- Performance Development Systems (PDS) aims to help athletes and coaches achieve their full potential by focusing on behavioral and attitudinal aspects of human development processes. - The distinction between individuals with a 'Performance' mindset from individuals with a 'leisure' mindset. - 'Performance' orientated individuals commit to being the best they can be in all aspects of their lives, including sleep, nutrition, and wellness. Leisure athletes may only commit to aspects they enjoy and when supervised. 'Leisure' orientated athletes might be committed at certain times but will not do this at all times or in all areas of their life. - Establishing clear expectations and understanding in coaching is important, particularly in defining acceptable, unacceptable, and exceptional behavior.- The baseline game helps athletes identify the strengths and weaknesses of their opponents, encouraging communication, decision-making, and ownership of their performance and development.- The rule of three in coaching helps athletes self-regulate their behavior, interactions, and focus during practice, emphasizing mindfulness and observation from the coach.- Identifying a team's "lighthouse" or reference point enables coaches and athletes to design and execute sessions that align with their desired goals and outcomes.- Committing to change and pursuing excellence through PDS can lead to growth and success in both personal and professional aspects of life.- Coaches and athletes should hold each other accountable for their actions and ensure they align with their aspirations and goals.- Reassessing goals and adjusting expectations based on reality data and individual capabilities can help prevent giving up on goals altogether.- Performance Development Systems offer extensive resources, workshops, and master classes to help coaches, athletes, and individuals achieve their goals and improve their lives.
