This balancing act proved near impossible under the weight of oppressive misogyny deeply entrenched within the structure of the British Armed Forces, where razors were supplied for men to shape their facial hair while sanitary products for her and others that needed them weren't even a consideration. Gemma's Army career didn't go to plan, with trauma, abuse and PTSD all featuring in her story. Episode Summary: In this episode of the Prescribing Lifestyle podcast, Dr. Avi Charlton sits down with the multi-talented Paul Taylor, a neuroscientist, physiologist, nutritionist, and former British Navy aircrew officer. Paul shares his fascinating journey from serving in the British Armed Forces to his current work in Australia, where he focuses on developing stress fitness programs. They delve into the concept of hardiness, exploring how we can harness stress to become stronger both mentally and physically. Paul also provides insights into his ongoing PhD research, the impact of modern comforts on our health, and practical tips for building resilience in everyday life. Key Takeaways: Paul Taylor's Background: Former British Navy aircrew officer with experience in anti-submarine warfare and search and rescue missions. Transitioned to becoming a neuroscientist, physiologist, and nutritionist in Australia. Currently completing a PhD in applied psychology with a focus on stress fitness. Understanding Hardiness: Hardiness involves control, challenge, and commitment orientations, helping individuals grow from stress rather than just bounce back. The importance of deliberately seeking discomfort to build resilience, both physically and psychologically. Stress Fitness and Resilience: Paul's research involves developing and evaluating training programs to improve psychological measures, fitness levels, and cognitive function. The concept of “stress inoculation training” and how it prepares individuals to handle stress more effectively. Impact of Modern Comforts: Paul's book, Death by Comfort, discusses how our hunter-gatherer physiology is mismatched with modern life, leading to health issues. The need to integrate more physical and psychological challenges into our lives to counteract the negative effects of too much comfort. Practical Tips for Building Resilience: Start small with challenges like cold showers or setting progressive physical goals. Focus on what you can control and use strategies to manage what you can't. Track progress to maintain motivation and cultivate a mindset that embraces challenges as opportunities for growth. It's been reported that the Prime Minister Rishi Sunak fasts for 36 hours at the start of each week. My guest today is not prominent on Social Media, and you have probably never heard of him, but his story is remarkable.  He left school at the age of 14 to work in construction where he spent many years before joining the British Armed Forces. After leaving the military through a few twists and turns he  taught bricklaying to students until he did research on ways to combat stress, downloaded a REIKI training  manual and that one act literally changed his life.He and his wife attended the Spiritualist Church near them and more synchronicities and healing abilities landed upon him. He shares with us the stories surrounding how he acquired all of his healing modalities. His authentic and down to earth nature will leave you uplifted and inspired. He tells us that we all have the ability to heal ourselves energetically and John now spends his time healing, teaching, leading the Church and igniting the sparks (the energy) of all who come into his presence.John tells us that we all share guides, they are energy and surround us all. We can reach out to them at any time for assistance with healing and more. He also tells us that The Fifth Dimension is a place where all all unwanted energy is sent, transmuted and released as a harmonized energy back to the universe.John is charming, modest, wise and so knowledgeable.  I hope you enjoy him as much as I did.Thank you for tuning in and should you love the podcast I hope you will share it, leave a review and give it five gold stars!Shine on!You can find John on Facebook Messenger - the best way to reach him. And he always responds.  Catch him for a healing before his star soars.JOHN POVEYhttps://www.facebook.com/john.povey.146https://www.reachingouttherapy.co.uk/aboutKIMhttps://www.instagram.com/kimduffselby/https://www.kimduffselby.com/https://www.facebook.com/kimduffselbykimduffselby@gmail.com

Some trust in (rely on) chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God. (Some nations boast of armies and of weaponry, but our boast is in the Lord our God TLB) They are brought to their knees and fall, but we rise up and stand firm. LORD, give victory to the king! Answer when we call! (from Psalm 20) The verb to escalate is only acquired its modern usage in recent times. Deriving from the Latin scala ladder, and passing through ‘escalade' (meaning ‘to assail a city by means of siege ladders), the West has been understandably cautious of escalating the conflict with Russia – but this at a time when that country has been throwing the entire weight of its considerable military weight and force against a nation many times its inferior in size and population. There has only been one country in this conflict guilty of escalation, and that is Russia, which has, effectively, declared war against the West. Ukraine has lost huge numbers of its fighting troops and remains heavily outnumbered and outgunned. At this time when Russia has effectively declared war against the West, Ukraine faces intense danger as this dedicated foe, who has learnt from his mistakes and is numerically far stronger than a year ago, intensifies its military push. Let's pray for Ukraine to have both the skill and the resources with which to survive, and then one day to rise again and resume its place as the breadbasket of the world. The matter of being prepared to send the advanced weaponry that Ukraine is manifestly in need of is also a test of each nation's commitment (and bravery). The West has been upping its response in terms of its willingness to provide Ukraine with what it needs to survive, but there are massive logistical challenges in this – not least in that the West has been sharing what it can spare, and drawing from a dwindling pool of resources, being neither able nor willing to restock at the pace at which these weapons are either being used or destroyed. In that sense the longer the conflict goes on the more it benefits Russia, who, so far from being completely defeated by the severe sanctions targeted against it has harnessed its industrial resources to massively increase weapons production, as well as obtaining supplies from similarly-minded nations. Pray too for those serving in the British Armed Forces, which have long been pared to the bone, as well as for effective supplies and resources. The music, the 1st movement of Manuel de Falla's Harpsichord Concerto, was written just before the outbreak of the horrifyingly bloodthirsty Spanish civil war in the 1930. It is a difficult piece to listen to, because it resounds with the menace and tumult of both that time and our own. We chose this music deliberately because times are hard for so many and what is happening in China is of extreme importance to the whole world. The musicians were Justin, playing the virtuoso harpsichord part, Nicola Gerrard , Amy Roberts, Shirley Richards, Helen Rees and Corinne Frost.

Composition by Fergus Kelly. "I've multi-tracked multiple pitch-shifted versions of the source sound to create a series of overlapping drones that phase and beat against each other. Shortly before starting work on this piece I had made field recordings in The National Museum of Ireland at Collins Barracks in Dublin. These consisted of various recordings of large radiators. Some were made with binaural mics placed between the two panes of the radiator to capture the drone close up, others were made by running my hand across a large upright wall mounted radiator to create resonant bell tones.  "There were rodent poison boxes nearby, hence the reference in the title, which is deliberately alliterative and lighthearted. The piece starts with the source sound at normal pitch, then gradually gets split into various versions of itself at different speeds – it becomes hydra headed, like some kind of mutating drone beast. The piece, after going through various changes, ends with a return to the source sound which is switched off, thus forming a nice full stop to the piece. "Archival sounds/archival sites: There's an interesting link between the manufacturer of the source sound and the location of the field recordings. Based in Essen, Krupps was well known as the largest maker of steel, artillery, ammunition and other armaments, and was the principal weapons manufacturer for Germany in both world wars. Collins Barracks is a former military barracks in Dublin, having housed both British Armed Forces and Irish Army garrisons through three centuries. It now houses the National Museum of Ireland (for decorative arts and history exhibits). "  This is part of the Obsolete Sounds project, the world's biggest collection of disappearing sounds and sounds that have become extinct – remixed and reimagined to create a brand new form of listening. Nick joined the British Navy in 1977 and when the Falkland Islands were invaded on April 1st 1982, he was soon deployed there. The Falklands War was a ten-week undeclared war between Argentina and the United Kingdom. Nick was serving on the Atlantic Conveyor. In May 1982, the ship was hit by two Argentine missiles causing Nick to suffer a fractured skull, broken jaw and dislocated shoulder as a result. However, it was the mental struggles that followed and the PTSD that affected him for the next 34 years that motivated him to seek help. Today, Nick is involved in Help For Heroes, a British charity which provides lifelong recovery support to British Armed Forces. In this episode, Nick talks about his service in the Falklands War, the wartime experiences he had while there, how his Falklands experience affected him in the form of PTSD on his return, how his PTSD affected his relationships, his journey to getting help, and where he is at today in his PTSD journey.
