2011, the year Kim won the Scarlet Stiletto Judges' Prize was the year her second novel, The Courier's New Bicycle, was published. Being a creature of many colours, the novel was shortlisted for two crime fiction awards (Ned Kelly, Davitt) as well as making the Tiptree Honor Book list and winning two speculative fiction awards (Aurealis, Ditmar). Until that year, she really didn't know if she could pull together a crime-themed short story or novel. The Stilettos gave her a shot in the arm, she says. she still has the commemorative bottle of wine, vintage 2010, called ‘The Killer'CreditsConcept designer, co-producer, and narrator: Susanna LobezCo-producer: Carmel ShuteProductionManager: Tim CoyGraphic Designer: Caz BrownCopyright Sisters in Crime Australia
In this week's episode of the Marathon Running Podcast, we delve into the intricacies of Energy Metabolism with Dr. Patrick Davitt, PhD, shedding light on crucial aspects that impact every runner's performance. We start by exploring the fundamental definition of Energy Metabolism and the role of ATP, the energy currency of our cells. Fueling takes center stage as we discuss its paramount importance during training runs, emphasizing the need to maintain blood glucose levels and supply energy to working muscles. The intriguing question arises: Can running in a "depleted" state, without eating before a run, actually benefit our body's adaptation? Dr. Davitt unravels the complexities of liver-stored glycogen versus muscle-stored glycogen, detailing the nuances of fuel partitioning, substrate metabolism, and the burning of carbohydrates or fats. The conversation extends to the adaptation of running in a fasted state or consuming slow-absorbing foods, exploring their impact on handling the later miles in a marathon. Dr. Davitt provides insights into the prevailing trend of fueling all runs and challenges the notion, pointing out that exceeding 60g of carbohydrates per hour lacks supporting data for performance improvement. As an endurance runner, understanding the ideal fueling strategy becomes crucial, with protein playing a role in replenishment and repair, and varying macronutrient ratios based on training versus competition. The podcast delves into the peculiar phenomenon of changing tastes in energy gels mid-run, linking it to hormonal changes and attempts at maintaining homeostasis. Dr. Davitt shares his extensive research on Ucan gels, presenting a study that tested superstarch cornstarch-derived gels against other formulations. The findings highlight the importance of consistency in maintaining stable glucose levels throughout a run. The episode concludes with an exploration of the "glycogen sparing myth" and strategies to prevent the dreaded bonk during a marathon. Listeners gain valuable insights from Dr. Patrick Davitt's seven years of unbiased research on Ucan, emphasizing his dedication to understanding the science behind energy metabolism and its practical implications for marathon runners. The Final Draft podcast is all about books, writing and literary culture. We're dedicated to exploring Australian writing, looking into the issues that drive our storytelling to discover more from the books you love. These are the stories that make us who we are. Holly Throsby is novelist and musician and whether it's a three minute folk pop tune or three hundred page novel, she knows how to spin a yarn. Holly's novels Goodwood and Cedar Valley have been nominated for Ned Kelly, Davitt and Indie book awards and her new novel Clarke is destined to continue the tradition of exploring the warm welcomes, community and dark underbelly of 90's regional Australia.. In a nondescript street in Clarke, Barney Clarke (no relation) is woken by a knock on the door. A veritable platoon of police have arrived to execute a search warrant on his house and backyard. Next door Leonie observes the police's arrival, thinking to herself that they are six years too late to help her missing friend Ginny Lawson. From these simple but compelling beginnings Holly Throsby weaves a story of the lives, community and institutions we come to rely on, and how they too often fall short in protecting those most vulnerable. In a nondescript street in Clarke (a city since the seventies) Barney Clarke (no relation) is woken by a knock on the door. Clarke is told through the alternating stories of Leonie and Barney. As the police scour Barney's rental property for clues to the disappearance of Ginny, we learn that both Leonie and Barney have their own secrets. Six years earlier Leonie and Ginny were neighbors. Leonie struggled to manage the expectations of her aging mother and awaited the infrequent return of her older sister. Leonie and Ginny would talk over the fence but rarely visited each other. Ginny's husband wouldn't allow it; didn't think it was good for her. Lou was an upstanding member of the community. Successful businessman and member of the local hunting club. They were the picture of the perfect suburban family and everyone thought how devastating it must have been for Lou when one day Ginny simply disappeared. Across town Barney and Deb had their own picture of suburban idyll. Members of the hiking club and with their boy in high school, Deb and Barney formed the core of a large social circle. So how is it that now Barney still wears a ring but lives alone. Why does Leonie mother Joe and where did he come from? Clarke unfolds these stories with the question hanging over how we maintain the relationships that form our communities. Throsby shows us friendships hard won and worked on everyday and acquaintances that rely more on conjecture and hearsay. Into this space she leaves the fate of Ginny as open question; when nobody asks who will ever know the truth? I love Holly Throsby's novels for their mystery and for their warmth. Over three books she has crafted the wide expanse of the fictional Gather Region and populated it with people not dissimilar to ourselves. In holding up this mirror she is able to call into question the morals, the values, even the stories that seem fundamental to our sense of ourselves. Clarke's central mystery is not just ‘what really happened to Ginny Lawson' but how it was allowed to happen. An open secret. A culture of keeping up appearances is called into question and through Barney and Leonie we see a blossoming hope that we are more than the events of our past. I'm a fan of Clarke and I'd have to say that while the Jacarandas are still purple and the sun's not too hot, it's the perfect read for an afternoon sitting in the sun.
Dennis Davitt has spent more than 3 decades in option markets. Getting his start in the crude pit on the NYMEX, he soon thereafter moved to equity derivatives, a product he's run risk in across both the sell-side and buy-side through many cycles. Through our conversation, we learn of the strong appreciation for liquidity – especially as it relates to dynamic products like options – that Dennis has gained through the many vol events he has traded through, especially during his long tenure running equity derivatives at Credit Suisse. In his rendering, it is from these episodes that we see two consistent outcomes emerge. First that investors become overleveraged and second that books wind up mismarked in some way. Here he cites the concept of “liquidity delta”, a metric that incorporates the impact of one's own presence and that of similar participants in markets. Impressed by the efficiency of prices in US-listed option markets, Dennis sees little obvious opportunity to extract arbitrage profits. Instead, he sees option markets as a vehicle to produce an intended risk outcome. And here, we shift to the work that Dennis is doing as CIO of Millbank Dartmoor Portsmouth, a firm he founded in 2020 to provide a risk-managed equity alternative through an options overlay. We explore the factors driving the flat skew in S&P 500 options as Dennis contrasts today's setup versus that which drove the famous XIV blowup in early 2018. I hope you enjoy this episode of the Alpha Exchange, my conversation with Dennis Davitt.

In this archive special episode from November, 2020, Master Beekeeper, Katharina Davitt reveals the nutritional benefits honey bees derive from bananas. Yes, you read that correctly, bananas! We all know that bananas are good for people. They are full of carbs, minerals, vitamins, are good for digestion and just taste good. But the one thing all beekeepers learn when they start out is that when bees are threatened, they release alarm pheromone and that smells like bananas. So up to now, wise beekeepers didn't bring bananas to the bee yard. But it turns out feeding bananas to honey bees is actually a good way to get good food into a hive. Really. Katharina Davitt tell us why and how. Her University of Montana Master Beekeeper research project explored the nutritional requirements of honey bees and the properties of bananas. Katharina shares data behind this! The conclusions reached from this study found that colonies cannot live on bananas alone, but bananas will help in the spring, during a summer dearth and in the fall. But who would have thought – bananas for bees?! Before the talk with Katharina, Kirsten, Kim and Jeff discuss the ongoing debate pitting the honey bee against native bees and pollinators. Why the debate? What's the issue and what's the real problem? Kim, Kirsten and Kim explore it all. Eliminate pork, gluten, and genetically modified (GMO). Try to eat as organic as you possibly can. Eliminate artificial sweeteners, the artificial sweeteners are going to be in almost everything, but they're neurotoxic and they stay in the body, your body actually cannot get them out, so you have to do cleansing regimens in order to get them out. Your body needs time to heal and cleanse, so the bottom line would be to take time for yourself, take time and as opposed to always thinking that you're growing and can affect your body in growth, take time to cleanse your body as well."

In the next of our Law Firm Founder Conversations podcast series, Our Managing Partner Clare Murray discusses all things law firm founder with Dr Peter Allinson, CEO of specialist national Real Estate law firm Davitt Jones Bould. Launched in 2000, the firm was an early disrupter of the traditional approach to law firm operations; from the start, adopting remote working, based around regional hubs, to drive the growth of the firm and to attract the best specialist Real Estate talent; lifting the burden of administration, billing and even marketing and sales from lawyers who wanted to focus on their technical specialism rather than law firm operations and BD; and building an institutional specialist brand and client relationships, moving away from over-reliance on individual partner brands and practices. In this podcast, Dr Peter Allinson and Clare Murray discuss a wide range of law firm founder issues, challenges and opportunities including: What can industry teach us to reshape the traditional law firm model for the better? What does it take for founder firms to compete with Big Law? The benefits of freeing lawyers to do what they do best – and creating a twin track that equally values and rewards technical and operational expertise How to build a technical sales team to sell legal services The 3 key requirements for a founder firm (or any firm) considering an IPO*: Develop visibility & predictability Make sure the Market is there Eliminate any single point of failure Building and financing growth to a level that aligns with personal values, risk threshold and ability to sleep at night! * First Round Review: Shooting for an IPO?
