It's been a theme in some of my coaching calls lately so I figured I'd share some ideas here on how to fix your "busy" or "I just can't get to the important stuff" problem. It's easy to get dragged into other peoples' emergencies. They can seem so compelling! It's easier to solve someone else's problems than our own anyway so who cares? Then you drop what you're doing, no matter how important...and skip off with your 5 Alarm Fire Friend. That's not going to get you anywhere. You'll eventually come back to whatever you were working on (or not), and feel like you have to start allllll over again. Save yourself the mental anguish. Follow these rules and it'll be a golden, beautiful and productive day!

Self-awareness Self-management Self-control Self-love Self-validation Self-adoration The only "self" word that has NOTHING to do with growth, power and happiness is "selfish", which ironically is what you often get accused of being when you start taking care of yourself. People sometimes want you to take care of them and only them. But that doesn't fly. They need to grow on their own - and it's not your job. So throw off the chains. Unburden yourself from their care, and replace it with self-care instead. Because you can still care, without making care a burden!

Today, for the first time ever, I spoke with someone who had also left a cult and was trying to rebuild his life. Quick update if you don't know: I grew up in a fundamentalist household, cut off from what "normal" people got to experience - no TV, movies, makeup, jewelry, parties, dances, and later no alcohol and discouraged from having friends outside The Truth (as it is called). But I left it in 2008 and continued to suffer from self-sabotage behaviours that came from living like that. In 2018, I realized that I could use my story for GOOD and that's been my focus ever since. Today, I had the privilege of sharing how I converted a traumatic past into something that I can use to help others. And no matter what your story is, you can, too.
