It's that time of year when we start to focus on our goals and desires for the new year ahead. Fresh starts can be exciting. They hold so much potential energy and positive expectation. But don't let yourself get bogged down and stuck in the “should” energy that can get in the way of your authentic goal-setting.  Today I'm sharing my personal ritual of how I close off every year before setting my new goals for the new year. And then I share my perspective on why it's empowering to unburden ourselves from prioritizing the things we think we “should” do, over the things that we genuinely desire doing. It's time to get the clarity you're longing for, by trusting in your deeper truths.

Episode 78Ever feel at war with yourself? Ever find yourself frustrated that you overreacted or that you've again turned to a less than ideal way of coping? In IFS this is called being "blended" - this is when a particular part (usually a younger wounded or protective part) of you has taken over, influencing your thoughts, emotions, and actions, so much so that it feels as if you are that part. Today we're talking about how to "unblend" to put your regulated self back in the driver seat of your mind, body and life. Today's conversation builds on last week's part 1 of our Parts Work conversation. Hit play to learn more! Here's the 3 takeaways:Our parts are often the coping strategies we've developed in response to difficult experiences. They are a welcomed part of our internal system, we just don't want them running the show.Unblending is the process of separating our authentic self from these reactive parts, allowing you to respond to situations with more clarity and compassion. Unburdening involves helping these parts release the heavy emotions or beliefs they carry, creating more harmony and flexibility in your internal system.Successful healing requires an integrated approach, mind and body, psychology and physiology. This is a special solocast, reflecting on Ni-Cheng's morning in dragon boat paddling camp with Nathan Salazar, head coach of Team USA for the US Dragon Boat Federation for multiple divisions. So many lessons in paddling apply to life! Dragon boat racing originated 2,500 years ago, during the Warring States Period (402-221 BC). Duan Wu Jieh or the Duan Wu Festival when dragon boat racing traditionally occurs originates from the story of Qu Yuan, who was a poet and high-ranking official of the Warring States Period who drowned himself out of sorrow at the defeat of his court by a corrupt kin. To honor him, villagers went out in the river with boats and drums and threw sticky rice dumplings (zongzi) into the water to prevent fish from eating his body. The date of Qu Yuan's death is the same day of the Duan Wu Festival. Dragon boating became popular again in 1976 in Hong Kong and now is internationally renowned for being a sport of inclusion especially for cancer survivors. This episode is Part 2 of a two-part series finale (RH 046 and 047) of the Relational Healing Podcast. In this episode, Jeff and I pick up the conversation where we left off last week. Listen as we open the vault to explore clips from past episodes, reflecting on my journey and offering a fresh perspective on complex trauma, emotional neglect, trust and safety, and our ever-evolving theory of childhood trauma recovery with an IFS/Parts-based perspective.  Link to Part 1 (episode 46)   Links to episodes we reviewed (and a few we didn't get to):   Ready to Gain Clarity? What You Must Do, Step-By-Step In this first episode of Season 2, I was starting to step into what I really wanted to do, which was to create personal transformations for humans. It was a wobbly first step away from "professor" Tanner to "coach" Tanner.   Relational Healing: Breaking Ground in Therapy Using IFS with Justin Martin My introduction to IFS recorded and my first experience with it described   Relational Healing: Trust a Tough One For You? Here's A Framework To Get You Feeling More Secure Where I let the world see inside my pain for the first time, this episode helped create the first wave of super fans for the podcast.   RH 001: What Relational Healing Offers For Trauma Recovery The rebrand episode for Relational Healing.    RH 005: Lessons in Mind-Blowing Resilience for Survivors Struggling With Self-Harm The community really started coming together with this episode .   RH 013: Trauma Recovery That Works: The Secrets Backed By Science This episode is where my True Self voice starts to emerge - I was in the middle of my largest group program to-date REVEAl, it had been a smashing success of a launch and I was finding my way as a coach and thought leader.   RH 023: Why Trauma Distortions Make Your Relationships Toxic A fan-favorite, the most DMs I've ever received were from this episode.   RH 029: How Songs That Bring You To Your Knees Can Lead To Unburdening This is the first public introduction to my approach to trauma recovery the IFS + Human Development + Love, I start innovating the model through my own self discovery, creatively bringing experiential activities into the healing process.    RH 034: How to Unburden the Shame of Protective Parts My technical knowledge of IFS starts to come out as I am moving through Level 1 training, my own healing process and starting to guide others in 1:1 IFS sessions.    RH 035: Why Healed Trauma Survivors Will Be The Energetic Source for a Profound Shift in Human Evolution I started making bold claims unapologetically.   RH 036: My Truth (Didn't Quite Get Brave Enough in November) + Some Static (Sorry About That!) This was me really cracking wide open - things had gotten big enough that my own healing challenges couldn't be contained anymore. Things had reached a breaking point and I knew that I was either stopping due to my trauma responses or I was going to heal through them. I chose the latter.    Request to join The Gathering: A Collective Initiation To The 5 Circuits of Healing Power https://www.facebook.com/groups/rhlgathering This is The Gathering, a free two-month cycle of programming in the Relational Healing Lab. This is your basecamp for your healing journey. As you move through an exploration of the 5 Circuits of Healing Power, you will develop Self Leadership alongside healing connections with fellow survivors, walking  and learning together. This is where everything changes. I cannot wait to meet you! ❤️ Tanner

When Tradition Lays a Trap | How to gracefully unburden yourself from obligations that don't make sense anymore with Suzi Banks Baum

There's no shortage of obligations. Things we don't really want to do but we trudge through anyway. Spending our days in patterns that drain rather than inspire is common. But, what if….What if you took a moment to pause this time and asked yourself a simple question:Why am I doing this thing I'm doing? The rituals and routines we participate in can be hard to break, but when traditions lay traps for our time and emotional health then it's time to get intentional again. The feelings we experience when we're part of expectations that we don't want to be a part of anymore end up bringing us more anxiety than joy. And those feelings of anxiety are trying to tell you that something just isn't working for you anymore. This week, Karlee welcomes the wise words of Suzi Banks Baum. Last fall, Suzi brought up a subject that many of us think about but seldom act upon. If we're going to continue to tell ourselves we “have to do this” and we “gotta do that”, then the least we can do is ask ourselves why. Because it's all about the why. In this episode, you'll learn how to identify the weight of expectation when tradition lays a trap. You'll hear Suzi explain the correlation between feelings of “I don't want to be doing this anymore” and the knowing you have in your body, particularly when it comes to deciding if something still makes sense in your life. She also shares how you can gracefully and respectfully untangle yourself from situations when a change needs to happen. If you're ready to clear your path to find more joy and a whole lot more ease, then this episode is for you.Save the Date: Monday, March 21st: International Bring Your Body to Work Day #bodytoworkWhat You'll Learn in This Episode:What agreement and disagreement feel like in your body (1:03)Why holidays and traditions can become burdens not blessings (11:14)What it feels like to know when something makes sense or doesn't anymore (14:41)How to get out of the contracts that no longer serve you (23:38)A clever mantra to help you determine the right and wrong time to have tricky conversations (25:28)Resources Mentioned in this Episode:Episode 106: Trust Your Knowing: How Women Rise From Doubt to Leading Themselves Forward with Suzi Banks Baum Send your Audio Comments and Questions to anitza@everybodythrive.comConnect with Suzi:WebsiteConnect With Karlee: WebsiteLinkedInInstagramMessy and Magnificent is produced by the folx at Ginni Media.
