In this two-part journey, Shauna and Rosalina detail the mental, emotional, financial, and physical struggle of hormone therapy through — and following — treatment. At points, Shauna felt like she was one continuous experiment, fighting fire with fire and piling on medications that put her in a dark place for the better part of a year. Rosalina and Shauna are on their five-year medication regimen, with Rosalina having experienced menopausal-like symptoms of insomnia, hot flashes, brain fog, and joint pain that lasted over a year and a half. With the help of a new workout regimen, Rosalina no longer experiences joint pain, but her other symptoms vary from week to month. She has found other coping mechanisms to help with insomnia and shared them with Shauna, who has also been having sleepless nights and hot flashes. Shauna shifted gears with a new oncologist at the end of 2022, who — along with a newfound support group — guided Shauna with empathy and compassion as she navigated the oftentimes treacherous lanes of hormonal therapy.Episode Timestamps:[00:01:35] Housekeeping Items/Updates[00:02:18] Rosalina's Update - Side Effects of Hormone Therapy[00:07:19] Rosalina's Brain Fog and Fatigue[00:11:28] Shauna's Joy of Having a Period Again[00:15:39] Shauna's Update - Revisiting Hormone Therapy[00:20:13] Starting Verzenio[00:24:52] Diarrhea and It's Many Joys[00:28:54] To Guinea Pig or Not To Guinea Pig[00:35:59] Side Effects and Symptoms[00:39:51] Advice to Your Former SelfListen to Our Hormone Therapy Part 1 episode in S2Click here to leave us a voicemail about what advice would you give to individuals or organizations who are considering supporting breast cancer awareness and research efforts through donations or other means?Resources:The Monarch Trial: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32954927/Verzenio Copay Assistance: https://www.verzenio.com/savings-supportIf you enjoy this episode, please share it with your friends. He is also the best-selling author of "Reversing Hashimoto's: A 3-Step Process for Losing Weight, Ending Fatigue, and Reducing Brain Fog." His book provides a comprehensive guide to understanding and reversing Hashimoto's disease, offering practical strategies and evidence-based approaches to help patients achieve optimal wellness.During the interview, Dr. Gupta explains that Hashimoto's disease is an autoimmune disorder where the immune system attacks the thyroid gland, leading to inflammation and an under active thyroid. He was inspired to write "Reversing Hashimoto's" to empower individuals to take control of their health and provide them with effective strategies to reverse this conditionCommon symptoms of Hashimoto's disease include fatigue, weight gain, hair loss, depression, constipation, and cold intolerance. However, symptoms can vary from person to person.Dr. Gupta highlights that an integrative medicine approach to treating Hashimoto's disease differs from conventional medicine by addressing root causes and imbalances. Integrative medicine focuses on nutrition, lifestyle modifications, stress management, and targeted supplementation, rather than solely relying on thyroid hormone replacement therapy.Diet and lifestyle modifications play a crucial role in reversing Hashimoto's disease. Patients should follow an anti-inflammatory diet, eliminating potential triggers like gluten and dairy. They should also prioritize stress management, quality sleep, regular exercise, and maintaining a healthy weight.Supplements and natural therapies can complement treatment for Hashimoto's disease. Dr. Gupta recommends specific supplements like selenium, vitamin D, omega-3 fatty acids, and herbs like ashwagandha. However, it is important to work with a healthcare provider for personalized recommendations. To connect with Dr. Anshul Gupta and learn more about his work, you can visit his website: AnshulGuptaMD.com Additionally, his book "Reversing Hashimoto's" is here: https://www.reversinghashimotobook.com/And his social media accounts are here:FacebookInstagramYouTubeLinkedInDo you have a question that you would like answered on the show? Youth Climate Activists Score A Win In MontanaThis week, a state court in Montana ruled in favor of a group of 16 youth climate activists, who argued that a state environmental law was in violation of a provision in the state constitution. The Montana constitution states: “The state and each person shall maintain and improve a clean and healthful environment in Montana for present and future generations.”  The ruling will allow (but not require) regulators to consider climate impacts when evaluating proposed energy projects for approval.Umair Irfan, staff writer at Vox, joins Ira to talk about the decision and what it might mean for other climate-related litigation around the country. They'll also discuss other science news of the week, including some strange particle physics from Fermilab,  the end of the road for the common incandescent light bulb, and how researchers decoded a snippet of song — using electrodes on a brain. COVID-19's Summer Wave Raises New QuestionsStep outside into a public place, and you may experience some deja-vu: Masking is back up, the coughs and sniffles are echoing, and coworkers are calling in sick. It's not just your imagination—hospitalizations from COVID-19 are up 14.3 percent for the week of August 5. This new wave has a name: EG. 5, named for the recent Omicron variant that is now the most prevalent. With new boosters on the horizon, Ira catches up with Dr. Angela Rasmussen, virologist at VIDO, the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization, at the University of Saskatchewan. They answer questions about the new monovalent booster, testing guidance, and why COVID-19 is still a public health problem.New Research Suggests Neurological Culprit For COVID Brain FogAmong the most debilitating symptoms of Long Covid is brain fog, a condition which includes symptoms like confusion or inability to concentrate. A recently published study using mice cells in petri dishes suggests that brain fog might be the result of neurons fusing together. The results have yet to be tested in live animals or humans. SciFri producer Kathleen Davis talks with study author, Dr. Ramón Martínez-Mármol, research fellow at the Queensland Brain Institute, at the University of Queensland, based in Brisbane, Australia, about what his research might help us better understand about brain fog. Reno Is Preparing To Turn Its Wastewater Into Drinking WaterInside a water treatment plant in north Reno, Nev., on a recent Wednesday, recycled wastewater was running beneath a floor grate inside a small testing room. Inside the space is a system of serpentine-like PVC pipes with 19 different ports, used to test water samples at different intervals.“It's about halfway through the treatment process at the wastewater facility,” said Lydia Teel, an engineer with the Truckee Meadows Water Authority, or TMWA, which serves about 440,000 people in the greater Reno area. “So, it's clean, but there's still some color, there's bacteria in it, some solids.”Teel spearheads a demonstration project called OneWater Nevada, an effort to show that the region can recycle the water that flushes down people's toilets and shower drains and – eventually – turn it back into clean, pure drinking water flowing from faucets, effectively creating a new water resource. The project is a collaboration between TMWA, the cities of Reno and Sparks, the University of Nevada, Reno, Washoe County, and the Western Regional Water Commission. The Reno area doesn't have a history of threatened water supplies, and historic snowfall this past winter eased drought conditions in Nevada and across parts of the Mountain West. But that could shift quickly with climate change. To stay updated on all-things-science, sign up for Science Friday's newsletters.Transcripts for each segment will be available the week after the show airs on sciencefriday.com.

There seems to be a few different biological effects like anti inflammation, anti allergy, and anti cancer. A unique quality of luteolin is that it seems to be able to function as an antioxidant or a prooxidant, but more research is needed to fully understand these functions. Perhaps most beneficial for our modern lives, there is a potential tie between luteolin and reducing or improving brain fog, social interactions, anxiety, and depression.. Real Talk with Life After Grief Chris

In this episode we explore Brain Fog.  Simply stated, Brain Fog is the brain's way of protecting itself.Brain Fog  clouds memory function during times of grief, trauma or extreme stress.   Specifically, concentration and  mental acuity are affected.  I noted having a hard time juggling normal tasks without feeling overwhelmed.  I also seemed to forget things with regularity until the brain fog passed.  In my travels and seeking guidance from professionals, I have come across a very good tool which helped me navigate through the brain fog much quicker.  The tool is called the Self Care Wheel.  During times of grief and trauma many people forget or lose sight of the things that keep them fully functional like sleep, exercise, going to church, hanging out with friends/family, meditation, etc.  The Self Care Wheel is a simple reminder of things that keep you grounded and functioning normally.  I have also found refocusing with the Self Care Wheel reduces the effects of memory fog.  Here is the link https://olgaphoenix.com/self-care-wheel/As indicated on the show, here is a link that explains all about brain fog.....https://balancedwheel.co.uk/can-grief-cause-brain-fog/Cheers and see you on the next episode.  #brainfog #finanicialplanning #selfcare #emotionalintelligenceIf you like the show, please feel free to pass this or any other episode along to any friends, family members or colleagues.  Support the showDid you know you can now Help Us Continue Making Awesome Content for Listeners Affected by Grief! Thanks for listening! Brain fog can mess a lot of people up and cause them to end up on anti-depressants, stimulants and anti-anxiety medications, this of course only compounds the problem.  It's important to recognize that though the inflammatory state induced by the infection may have been the trigger for the symptom of brain fog, there are many lifestyle choices that can prolong it, promote it, or help heal it.
