From its anti-inflammatory effects to its ability to resolve long COVID symptoms in days, the real story is not what we've been told. Today, I sit down with Dr. Bryan Ardis to uncover the science behind nicotine, why it has been vilified by medicine and big pharma, and how it supports brain health, immunity, inflammation, and even chronic conditions like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, arthritis, and digestive disorders. This week on Ditch the Labcoat, Dr. Mark Bonta sits down with Dr. Diana Driscoll, an optometrist, researcher, and internationally recognized authority on the autonomic nervous system—who also happens to be one of the rare non-MDs to join the show. After her own sudden and life-altering health collapse, Dr. Driscoll found herself deep in the world of dysautonomia—a group of disorders affecting the autonomic nervous system, responsible for all those automatic functions in our bodies we don't usually have to think about. Finding few answers from doctors, and confronted by a system that too often shuns “invisible illnesses,” Dr. Driscoll became her own medical detective, pioneering research into conditions like Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) and unlocking innovative approaches to treatment. In this eye-opening conversation, Dr. Driscoll and Dr. Bonta tackle the complex, often misunderstood world of autonomic dysfunction, the science behind “mystery illnesses,” and the frustrating gaps in our medical knowledge. From the lived experience of being a patient who was told “it's all in your head,” to developing new therapeutics and advocating for others, Dr. Driscoll's story is as inspiring as it is informative. If you've ever struggled with unexplained symptoms, felt dismissed by the healthcare system, or just want to understand the evolving science behind these often-invisible disorders—this episode is for you. Plug in for a candid, practical, and hope-filled discussion that challenges the boundaries of what medicine knows today and explores the frontier where suffering finally meets science.Episode HighlightsInvisible Illness Is Real — Validation for patients with unexplained symptoms is crucial; their suffering is genuine, not imagined or "all in their head."Medicine's Knowledge Blindspots — The medical establishment often lacks answers—and even language—for complex autonomic disorders like dysautonomia and POTS.Patient-Led Discovery Matters — Dr. Driscoll's personal journey from patient to researcher demonstrates the power of self-advocacy in pushing knowledge forward.Autonomic System Ignorance — Most clinicians receive minimal training about the autonomic nervous system, leading to missed diagnoses and inadequate care. One Size Doesn't Fit All — There is no single solution for autonomic dysfunction—treatments must be individualized to each patient's complex presentation.Beyond Symptom Management — Suppressing symptoms (e.g., racing heart) without understanding the root cause can worsen patient outcomes or miss vital clues. The Inflammatory Connection — Inflammation, triggered by infections or stress, can drive autonomic dysfunction—a framework for science to pursue targeted therapies.Necessity of Clinical Innovation — When guidelines and therapies don't exist, scientific curiosity and non-traditional research can inspire new approaches and hope. The Power of Lived Experience — Practitioner-patients like Dr. Driscoll bridge gaps between science, clinical care, and compassion through firsthand understanding.Hope Through Education — Educating both patients and practitioners fosters progress—there's always hope, even if answers come step by step.Episode Timestamps04:15 – Post-COVID Dysautonomia Insights 07:12 – Invisible Illnesses and Tech Misguidance 13:07 – Central Sensitization and Unexplained Symptoms 16:44 – Nicotine Patch Stimulates Vagus Nerve 20:01 – Navigating Illness and Predatory Healthcare 20:51 – Navigating Autonomic Dysfunction Treatments 26:03 – Bridging Medical Knowledge Gaps 29:38 – Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension Insights 31:25 – Inflammation's Impact on Heart and Vision 36:07 – Chronic Illness: The Domino Effect 41:18 – Questioning Symptom-Driven Treatments 44:22 – Unseen Illness: Recognition Grows 45:26 – Advancements in Autonomic Dysfunction Treatments 49:06 – Championing Long Covid ResearchDISCLAMER >>>>>>    The Ditch Lab Coat podcast serves solely for general informational purposes and does not serve as a substitute for professional medical services such as medicine or nursing. Most people think stress and trauma are just different points on the same scale. But what if that belief has kept people stuck in cycles of chronic illness, autoimmune flare-ups, and emotional overwhelm? Many people are doing everything "right." They're eating well, exercising, going to therapy, yet they still struggle with gut issues, brain fog, anxiety, and fatigue that won't go away. They can't understand why their body seems to be working against them instead of healing. In this episode, Dr. Aimie reveals the crucial difference between stress and trauma, and why understanding this distinction changes everything about how you heal. She explains how unresolved trauma gets stored in the body and creates a biology of trauma that keeps your nervous system stuck in survival mode. You'll discover why trauma doesn't have to be "big" to be significant, how it shows up as chronic health conditions decades later, and the repair tools that address trauma at the emotional, somatic, and cellular levels, creating accelerated healing that single approaches cannot. You'll hear more on: [2:30] The simple question that reveals childhood trauma you may have downplayed [6:45]  How chronic conditions like autoimmunity follow predictable trauma patterns [9:00]  What happens during nervous system shifts and why they affect your whole body [15:30]  How brain inflammation fuels “body trauma loops” that keep you stuck [19:44] Why brain inflammation is part of your trauma response (and how to recognize it!) There's nothing quite like the electric buzz of a FASTer Way event. The hugs. The breakthroughs. The “I'm not alone in this” moments. In this episode, Amanda spills why our live gatherings are pure magic for connection, accountability, and transformation — and drops a hint that even more in-person experiences are coming your way. But first… a revelation! Amanda recently discovered she's allergic to Florida. Yes, really. That revelation sent her down an unexpected rabbit hole into the world of mold toxicity. Those nagging symptoms — depression, brain fog, stubborn fatigue, and that strange “wired but exhausted” feeling — might not just be “life”... they could be mold talking. When Amanda spends time at her home in Costa Rica, the difference is instant. “It is like a veil lifted,” she says, and she can see just how much her environment has been impacting her health.  Now, she's on a targeted healing protocol: a low histamine diet, strategic supplements, and regular bloodwork with Dr. Stephen Cabral. (Hot tip: reheating leftovers can trigger a histamine spike — who knew?)  She's even considering tearing down her home and rebuilding it from scratch with specialists to ensure it's truly mold-free. Welcome to Fusionary Health with Dr. Shivani Gupta. In this solo master-class she reveals the hidden epidemic she calls mental inflammation—a chronic, low-grade tension that rewires the nervous system even when your labs look “normal.” You'll hear how relentless pings, deadlines, and social-media comparison keep the HPA axis locked in overdrive, how elevated cortisol erodes the gut lining and sparks systemic inflammation, and why a sluggish vagus nerve blocks true recovery.Drawing on modern research and timeless Ayurveda, Dr. Shivani explains why mental inflammation shows up as fatigue, brain fog, IBS, insomnia, mood swings, and stubborn weight-gain. She outlines a practical antidote: rhythmic breathwork, phone-free nature walks, a “tea-time-is-me-time” ritual, consistent circadian scheduling, and earth-grounding pauses—micro habits that signal safety to the body and cool the inflammatory cascade.Along the way she offers a sneak peek at her forthcoming Hay House × Penguin Random House book The Inflammation Code (publishing 3 Feb 2026), shares a raw account of managing her own burnout while finishing the manuscript, and invites listeners to preorder the book, download a free vagus-toning breath guide, and explore her line of functional Ayurvedic teas. Why We Forget Things...AKA Brain FogMedications - Drugs known to impact memory include (anxiety meds like Xanax and Valium, statins (used to control cholesterol), anti-seizure meds, beta blockers, antidepressants, opioids and a certain class of sleeping pills.Depression or anxiety - When you're depressed, your brain is not working at 100%. It's not paying attention to things as well as it usually does, and the memory areas are not doing what they usually do.Diet - Research links ultraprocessed foods with cognitive decline and an increased risk of dementia.Sleep - Not getting enough sleep can make it harder to concentrate, learn new things and create new memories, according to the National Institutes of Health.Trouble hearing - New research suggests a connection between hearing loss and brain health, but hearing aids can help. The study links hearing aids with a 19% lower risk of long-term cognitive decline.Multitasking - Being distracted affects your ability to focus and remember things, and one study finds that multitaskers often have trouble recalling information. And they were young people.Restuarant Red FlagsIt's dirtyThe place is empty - If it's a Monday night, this isn't concerning, but if the dining room is empty during peak hours on a weekend...There's no management presence - Managers are visible in the dining room, greeting customers, talking to tables and helping servers when needed, but if you can't tell who's in charge, it might be because no one is.It's overloaded with social media influencers - Sure, they can help get people in the door, but they might be getting special treatment and freebies to promote a restaurant. The staff argues with you - Mistakes will be made, but staff members should own it and try to make it up to you when that happens. It doesn't matter how good the food is, if the staff argues with you, it ruins the experience.Servers don't know the menu - It shows poor training and “a lack of pride in the product.”You're being upsold aggressively - When it feels like a script or they're harassing you, it's a sign the restaurant is struggling and doesn't care about hospitality as much as sales.New Cheating EmojisAccording to private investigator Paul Jones from ARF Private Investigators, there are some random, innocent-looking emojis that aren't really so innocent. Jones says that if you find your partner texting the croissant or padlock emojis, they're probably cheating on you. “On the surface, it might look innocent, but there's usually a deeper meaning,” Jones explained. “We've had people using a croissant emoji as a way of saying ‘meet me for breakfast,' or the letter emoji as a subtle ‘text me when you're free.'”Second Date UpdateDean and Ariel met on Hinge, and after a fun back-and-forth over messaging, they decided to meet in person. Their first date was sushi and sake bombs in Fremont. She has pulled a Casper.

Iodine is the building block to healthy and happy thyroid. Without sufficient iodine, we can't build the very hormones that our thyroid gland is supposed to make - T4 and T3. So, if you have a deficiency of thyroid hormone, as is in the case of hypothyroidism - why are more doctors looking into iodine deficiency as a possible root cause behind hypothyroidism? That is a question I'm answering on today's episode, along with the even more important questions of: if you're doctor isn't going to test you, how can YOU evaluate your own iodine levels. And secondly, if they are low, how can you safely build them up again. There's a lot of controversy around iodine, both on whether or not we even need more iodine in our diets as well as if iodine supplement is even safe. Her symptoms weren't improving, and her doctor's solution was to increase her medication yet again. The turning point came when she uncovered something deeper. Jessica was trying so hard to stay positive, think positive, do her affirmations because that is what she was told she should be doing. However by doing that, she was unintentionally overriding her true emotions and it made her feel way worse.Anat explains how this kind of forced positivity can be a detriment because it can actually create stress in the nervous system, keeping the body in a chronic state of fight, flight, or freeze. This episode unpacks how overriding your feelings can actually worsen autoimmune symptoms and why true healing starts with emotional safety.Anat also shares the science behind how the nervous system reacts faster than the conscious mind, how inner child work helps create safety, and why nervous system regulation must come before mindset work can truly be effective. His story and system offer breakthrough potential for anyone facing fatigue, inflammation, or looking to upgrade energy, resilience, and longevity. You'll learn: • How EWOT works differently from hyperbaric oxygen and why it's faster • Why brain fog, poor sleep, and chronic inflammation all trace back to oxygen supply • How oxygen hacking activates neuroplasticity, detox pathways, and energy production • When to stack with ketosis, red light, nootropics, and mitochondrial supplements • How elite athletes and chronically ill patients both use this protocol • Why “Smarter Not Harder” starts with oxygen-fueled mitochondrial upgrades This is essential listening for anyone serious about biohacking, functional medicine, brain optimization, metabolism, fasting, supplements, and longevity. Dave Asprey is a four-time New York Times bestselling author, founder of Bulletproof Coffee, and the father of biohacking.
