August 31, 2024 Daily Devotion: "The Mender" Psalm 34:18 New International Version 18 The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. When life breaks our heart, we can hold on to this promise: God is a mender of broken hearts. He steps toward those who are in pain with His healing and help. The crushing blows of life cannot fully destroy because God always comes close to rescue you. The enemy of our souls wants us to think God is callous and uncaring when we are suffering, but we must resist those emotions of rejection. Never forget that Jesus is a Man of Sorrows who came to save us from the crushing weight of sin and grief. God always draws near to the hurting and helps us heal. The mending starts when we turn to Him and ask Him to apply His mercy to our hurt. Are you deeply wounded? Lay your pain at the foot of the cross. Christ will bind up your brokenness.

Scripture for this service is Isaiah 58:1-12 Fasting from injustice 58 Shout loudly; don't hold back; raise your voice like a trumpet! Announce to my people their crime, to the house of Jacob their sins. 2 They seek me day after day, desiring knowledge of my ways like a nation that acted righteously, that didn't abandon their God. They ask me for righteous judgments, wanting to be close to God. 3 “Why do we fast and you don't see; why afflict ourselves and you don't notice?” Yet on your fast day you do whatever you want, and oppress all your workers. 4 You quarrel and brawl, and then you fast; you hit each other violently with your fists. You shouldn't fast as you are doing today if you want to make your voice heard on high. 5 Is this the kind of fast I choose, a day of self-affliction, of bending one's head like a reed and of lying down in mourning clothing and ashes? Is this what you call a fast, a day acceptable to the Lord? 6 Isn't this the fast I choose: releasing wicked restraints, untying the ropes of a yoke, setting free the mistreated, and breaking every yoke? 7 Isn't it sharing your bread with the hungry and bringing the homeless poor into your house, covering the naked when you see them, and not hiding from your own family? 8 Then your light will break out like the dawn, and you will be healed quickly. Your own righteousness will walk before you, and the Lord's glory will be your rear guard. 9 Then you will call, and the Lord will answer; you will cry for help, and God will say, “I'm here.” If you remove the yoke from among you, the finger-pointing, the wicked speech; 10 if you open your heart to the hungry, and provide abundantly for those who are afflicted, your light will shine in the darkness, and your gloom will be like the noon. 11 The Lord will guide you continually and provide for you, even in parched places. He will rescue your bones. You will be like a watered garden, like a spring of water that won't run dry. 12 They will rebuild ancient ruins on your account; the foundations of generations past you will restore. The Mender of Roads is approached by a weary traveler who asks for directions to the Evremond chateau. He is given directions and then takes a nap. When he awakens, he departs and later the chateau is on fire, set by four figures. The villagers are excited by this and pound on the tax collector's door as he hides on his rooftop. The Mender of Roads describes to DeFarge, Jacques one, two, and three what he witnessed happen to Gespard, the man who killed the Marquis for running over his child. Gespard spent some months in hiding after killing the Marquis, but he was found by the French government, tortured and hanged. The Mender of Roads is taken to Versailles by the DeFarge's and he cheers and marvels at the royal court. The DeFarges hope to fuel his focus of hatred and violence in the future by exposing him to the opulence and decadence of the court, while violence and hunger escalate in France. We are continuing our studies of the great letter from the hand of the Apostle John -- John the Mender -- the man who was called to follow Christ as a teenager when he was mending his nets. That act became symbolic of the ministry of this man, the one who mends things, who calls us back to fundamental matters. As we saw in the last message, John began by presenting to us a life, a life which appeared in history in the form of a person, a person who was touched and seen and heard and handled. He was, therefore, no mere figment of the imagination. He was not an invented person, a composite of the longings and desires of men, projected by their wishful thinking upon a being who never really lived. He is a man who lived, and walked among us, John said. We touched him, we saw him, we heard him, we handled him.

We are now experiencing the unique ministry of John the Mender, the apostle whose particular function it was to call men back to fundamentals. This was foreseen, in figure, in the act John was performing when he was called by Christ, for he was found mending his nets. The ministry of a mender is very much needed in any hour of weakness and attack. This is why the Holy Spirit chose the Apostle John to be the last writer of Scripture. His writings came at a time when the Church had begun to be infiltrated by various false concepts and ideas, and strong persecution had arisen.

It has been our privilege to sit under the ministry of the Apostle John, the Mender, the one to whom it was given by our Lord to restate the foundations of the church. This is the ministry of the Apostle John, both in his gospel and in his letters. In this first letter his primary concern has been to restore to Christians, in every age and place, that intimacy with and restful confidence in the Lord Jesus Christ himself, which John calls fellowship. Remember Jesus himself had spoken of this. He said that if anyone came to him he would put in him "a well of living water" John 14:4 KJV) which would be "in him." We are approaching the close of this little letter of the Apostle John, whose task was the calling back of the church to foundational things. He is John the Mender, who, when the Lord Jesus called him to the ministry, was found mending his nets. He concludes this letter with certain final notes of positive conviction. The last few verses repeat again and again the little phrase, we know. It is that note of positive assurance that is always a key mark of true Christianity, quite in contrast to the spirit of the age in which we live. Christians are to be dogmatic about certain fundamental things because they have found him who is the truth. We know certain things and we are to say them forthrightly, unabashedly, without any sense of shame and hesitation. Now we do not know everything, and if we give the impression we do we are distorting the faith. But there are things we know -- certain essential facts of faith.
