Your Next Best Step: Helping Small Business owners build a plan for a brighter future
Many leaders reach a point where success no longer feels fulfilling. In this Leadership Bites episode of The C-Suite Mentor Podcast, host Theresa Cantley explores what to do when you feel stuck, burned out, or disconnected from your purpose as a leader. Through a powerful real-world client story, Theresa breaks down why leaders lose passion, how misalignment between identity and role creates frustration, and why growth often feels uncomfortable before it feels empowering. This episode dives into how to shift from leading from the outside in to leading from the inside out by reconnecting with who you want to be, how you want to feel, and what truly makes you come alive as a leader. If you've been feeling overwhelmed, unsure of your direction, or questioning your leadership path, this episode will help you recalibrate, refocus, and take the next right step forward with clarity and confidence. Things to Listen For • Why feeling lost is often a sign you are being asked to grow [01:12] • How leading from an old identity creates friction and burnout [05:02] • The difference between outside-in leadership vs inside-out leadership [07:18] • How intention shapes your daily leadership actions [09:10] • Why reconnecting with what makes you come alive restores motivation [11:02] • How misalignment between role and identity drains passion [12:20] • How to define your personal leadership philosophy [13:04] • Why growth always comes with discomfort and uncertainty [14:22] • The next right step to regain clarity and alignment [17:20] • Final leadership reflection and practical next step [19:10] Shownotes In this Leadership Bites episode, Theresa Cantley shares a powerful coaching conversation with a long-time leader who felt burned out, overwhelmed, and disconnected from his passion. Feeling Lost Is Often a Signal for Growth Feeling lost does not mean you are failing. It often means you are being invited into your next level of leadership. Growth naturally brings discomfort, uncertainty, and friction when you try to lead from an old identity that no longer fits who you are becoming. Inside-Out Leadership vs Outside-In Leadership Many leaders attempt to meet expectations, industry pressure, and external demands first. This creates misalignment. True leadership clarity begins by reconnecting with who you want to be, how you want to feel, and what matters most before reacting to external noise. Reconnecting with What Makes You Come Alive When leaders drift away from the activities that energize them, burnout follows. Reconnecting with what brings you alive restores momentum, creativity, and purpose in your role as a leader. Redefining Your Leadership Philosophy Rather than reacting to what others think you should be doing, define your personal leadership philosophy. These principles guide how you lead, how you make decisions, and how you shape culture within your business. The Power of Intention in Daily Leadership Setting a daily intention changes how you show up. Instead of operating on autopilot, intention allows you to lead with clarity, focus, conviction, and alignment throughout your day. Finding the Next Right Step Clarity does not come from doing everything at once. It comes from taking the next right step that aligns with who you are becoming as a leader. Small aligned actions create powerful momentum over time. Final Leadership Reflection Leadership growth requires letting go of who you were so you can step into who you are becoming. When you reconnect with your intention, your identity, and what makes you come alive, you regain clarity, confidence, and direction.

Today, Eric is delighted to welcome Melva LaJoy Legrand as his guest. Melva is an icon in our industry, having built an impressive career that spans the US, France, and Europe, earning numerous recognitions along the way. In this episode, she shares her journey and discusses the honors she received within the industry, offering inspiration and insights for solopreneurs and small business owners. Her Journey Melva began her career as a teacher, but her creative spark kept pulling her in a different direction. A volunteering stint at a radio station one summer introduced her to concerts, festivals, and events, and she discovered her true calling. With the unwavering support of her parents, she stepped into event planning, starting at the bottom, and soaking up every lesson she learned along the way. With the help of her mentors, she managed to overcome her fear, learn about leadership, and shape her emotional intelligence. With perseverance, faith, and resilience, Melva built her own business, LaJoy Creative, weaving together her professional achievements and her personal trials. Her Early Career Melva describes her early years as a "preparation season”, where she embraced every small task with humility, absorbing lessons from behind the scenes. That shaped her professional values, helping her decide the kind of leader she wanted to become. Mentorship and Growth Melva had several mentors who were all central to her development. One of her mentors encouraged her toward a leadership position at a major festival, creating a breakthrough moment where she discovered her own capacity to lead. This experience highlighted the importance of humility, teachability, and persistence in building effective mentor relationships. Building Confidence and Starting Over Melva restarted her business in 2019 during a deeply challenging period while caring for her ailing father. His encouragement gave her the courage to relaunch her business, and she also received additional confirmation from her mentors and unexpected encounters, fueling her belief that her business was her purpose. Overcoming Trauma and Anchoring in Faith As a survivor of abuse and trauma, Melva knows that therapy, faith, support groups, and resilience are an essential part of the healing process. Her faith and clarity about her values have shaped her leadership and business decisions, ensuring she only accepts work that aligns with her principles. Awards and Recognition Melva has received numerous honors, including recognition for organizing survivor-focused events, being named a Top Female Founder 500, and winning Silver for International Event Agency of the Year. Those awards affirm her parents' belief that the world would always make room for her. She also takes pride in recent collaborations, including honoring cultural icons at a major beauty and artistry event. Cultural Perspective: US vs France Living between the US and France has given Melva unique insight into the work-life balance. She contrasts the American culture of overwork with the French emphasis on rest and leisure. While she acknowledges higher US salaries, she credits her best creative breakthroughs to the mental clarity she gained during her time abroad. What up, Beasts. Welcome back to the show! This week's episode hit me deep in the heart (and the joints, let's be real) because we're talking about something most people avoid until it's knocking on their door: retirement. But not the “save money, buy an RV, wave goodbye to your coworkers” kind. I sat down with Wendy Leggett, founder of Conflux Retirement Coaching, and we cracked open what it really means to prepare for retirement from the non-financial side. Wendy brings the wisdom (and receipts) on how to make that transition feel less like a scary ending and more like a badass reintroduction to yourself. Think identity, purpose, mindset, and how to not become a permanent fixture on the couch watching 47 hours of TV a week. This convo got personal, too. I shared the story of my stepdad, Mike Moffat, co-founder of Schiit Audio and inventor of the first digital-to-analog converter, who's 76, in a wheelchair, has been through more medical crises than a hospital drama… and still refuses to retire because he loves what he does. And honestly? I get it. If coaching lights me up in my 70s the way it does now, you're gonna have to pry the mic from my cold, beastly hands. If you've ever wondered what it means to really take care of your future self (mind, body, and spirit) this episode is your wake-up call. Let's stop letting society define our next chapter and start rewriting it ourselves. As always, I hope something lands with you today. I hope something you hear tugs at your heart strings and/or I hope you laugh.Bio: Wendy Leggett is a Professional Certified Coach and owner of Conflux Retirement Coaching, specializing in non-financial retirement life planning.
