Matthew Dowling, preaching minister at the Plymouth Church of Christ, preached a message titled "God Will Enlighten You" from Daniel 1 and various scriptures. The July sermon series is "God Is On Our Side." This sermon explores the theme of running from God, drawing parallels to the biblical story of Jonah. We're reminded that, like Jonah, we often try to escape God's call on our lives. Matthew uses the analogy of 'The Fugitive' TV show to illustrate how we can spend our lives running from God, convinced He's out to get us. However, we're assured that God reveals Himself to the runner, often through a call to ministry or service. The key lesson is that when we run from God's will, we pay a price – spiritually, emotionally, and sometimes physically. We're encouraged to submit to God's will, even when it challenges our prejudices or comfort zones, as true fulfillment comes from following His plan for our lives. Here's a 5-day Bible reading plan and devotional guide based on the themes from the sermon: Day 1: Responding to God's Call Reading: Jonah 1:1-3 Devotional: God's call often challenges our comfort zones, just as it did for Jonah. Reflect on times when you've felt God calling you to something difficult. How did you respond? Remember, running from God's will leads to turmoil, while embracing it brings fulfillment. Today, ask God to give you the courage to say "yes" to His plans, even when they seem daunting. Day 2: The Futility of Running from God Reading: Psalm 139:7-12 Devotional: Like Jonah, we sometimes foolishly believe we can escape God's presence. Today's passage reminds us that God is omnipresent. Consider areas in your life where you might be trying to hide from God. Remember, He pursues us out of love, not condemnation. Embrace His presence and allow His love to transform those areas you've been keeping hidden. Day 3: God's Love for All People Reading: Acts 10:34-35 Devotional: Jonah's prejudice against the Ninevites blinded him to God's universal love. Examine your heart for any prejudices or biases that might be hindering your ability to love others as God does. Pray for God to expand your capacity to love, especially those you find difficult to accept or understand. Day 4: Surrendering to God's Will Reading: Luke 22:39-42 Devotional: Jesus exemplified perfect submission to God's will, even when it led to great suffering. Contrast this with Jonah's initial rebellion. What areas of your life are you struggling to surrender to God? Today, practice saying, "Not my will, but Yours be done" in specific situations you face. Day 5: God's Persistent Grace Reading: Romans 5:8 Devotional: Despite Jonah's disobedience, God didn't give up on him. Similarly, God's love for us is not dependent on our perfect obedience. Reflect on times when you've experienced God's grace despite your failings. How can you extend this same grace to others? Thank God for His persistent love and ask for strength to be a channel of His grace to those around you.

Los Angeles-based literary manager and producer Jarrod Murray joins the crew of the USS Hit Factory to discuss 'Under Siege', the 1992 action thriller starring Steven Seagal. We discuss the exemplary direction of journeyman Andrew Davis who would go on a year later to make his opus, 'The Fugitive', praise the transcendent performance of Tommy Lee Jones as the madcap leader of a group of nuclear terrorists, and return to one of our favorite preoccupations: the meteoric rise (and astonishing fall) of Steven Seagal, movie star. Finally, we mourn the loss of a bygone staple of Hollywood: Cool Boat Cinema™, and contemplate who might be able to take up the mantle and revive the genre in 2023. Follow Jarrod Murray on Twitter. We discuss the 1993 box office sensation 'The Fugitive' a meticulously detailed and expertly crafted thriller without an ounce of fat on it. Topics include the film's unusual and effective narrative structure, the bravura performances by the film's two leads, Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones, and the anxieties at the heart of man-on-the-run thrillers. In which Kevin and Jordan review 'The Fugitive'. Not the version that CBS did in 2000. Or the Quibi one. Also not the Harrison Ford movie. (And I guess India produced their own The Fugitive film in 1995?) This is a review of the really old one from 1963. Because I guess we hate ratings. Enjoy!
On the latest episode of the Geektown Radio podcast, I'm joined by Bex from TristaBytes as we melt in the sun to chat about our week in tv and film plus we have all the weekly tv news, renewals and cancellations.Reviewing the last 7 days in tv, film and gaming, in between bouts of running away from Fluffy the Xenomorph, Bex has been honking at unsuspecting residents of a small village in the wonderfully bonkers 'Untitled Goose Game', so gives us her review of that. She has also finally finished 'Good Omens'... I mean, it's only taken 15 months since she was interviewing the cast on the red carpet to get around to it... Meanwhile, I have finished Netflix’s Arthurian legend drama ‘Cursed’, along with catching the new Quibi drama 'The Fugitive' starring Kiefer Sutherland & Boyd Holbrook. In the TV news, we have the renewals, cancellations and pickups, along with news of a new 'A League of Their Own' series coming to Amazon (based on the film, not the Sky One quiz show!), Disney's new "Star" international streaming service, and Comedy Central's reboot of classic cartoon ‘Ren & Stimpy’. Rejected headline/episode quote: "That guy was masturbating in my dad's suit." My guest this week is Brant McCrea, writer and star of the indie horror/sci-fi film Chicago Rot (available for streaming at the usual places). We eat tacos from Yoli's, where the cook handles all the tacos with his bare hands! It doesn't bother McCrea at all as he says, "I am a dirty person." We talk about Chicago Rot, to which I comment, "I don't know what your movie is... it's nuts." McCrea replies, "(it's) too scary to be an art film, but too artsy to be a horror film." Also on this week's show: There's an early horchata casualty. We talk about his beard: "I hide cigarettes in there." The challenge creatives face when hustling for money. The sleazy motel that served as a key location for the movie (hookers! drug dealers! voodoo practitioners!). The stunning first-time talent of co-star Shira Barber. McCrea's acting challenges: "You're like Harrison Ford in 'The Fugitive.'"
