“The most subversive thing this show could do is make you cry… If you really boil down television, really cook it in the pan, it's the character business. I'm in the character business. Movies are in the plot and spectacle business, for television, there's a thing about laying in bed and watching someone in your bedroom or living room that you really care about, you're inviting these people into your house. The more you care about them, the more your show will succeed. There's no simple formula, but you could boil down every single TV show to if the characters work, that show is likely going to work. If the characters don't work, no matter what that show is, no matter how much money you throw at it, that show is not going to work,” says Eric Kripke, creator and showrunner for The Boys on Prime Video. In this special episode hosted by screenwriting career coach Lee Jessup live from the Writers Guild Foundation in Los Angeles, Kripke talks about the functions of a showrunner, the excellent training he got doing 15 seasons of the show Supernatural, and what it's like when the real world mirrors the darker aspects of The Boys. Kripke also shares his sage advice for writing dialogue. “I was interviewing people about their life experiences – it was a romantic comedy so I was asking people about their love lives. I wanted to transcribe it, so I had about 20 hours of material that I'm just transcribing and that's how I learned to write dialogue, just from doing that because you learn how people really speak. No one speaks in straight, declarative sentences. It's this weaving thing where they'll start and they'll back away and throw in a new idea. When you start to pay attention to what real language looks like on a page, it's very different than what you think it looks like. So, to know what it looked like and how to recreate it, was huge. I recommend everyone try that,” says Kripke. To hear more, listen to the podcast. You can also watch this episode here.
Released in 2016, “The Trail Went Cold” is a weekly true crime podcast which explores unsolved mysteries and cold cases. On each episode, host Robin Warder examines a new murder or missing persons case, tackling a wide variety of mysteries from different countries and time periods. After sharing all the details about each case, Robin offers his own personal analysis and theories about what happened. At the time of this recording, “The Trail Went Cold” has released over 400 episodes and is approaching its nine-year anniversary as a podcast and some of the cold cases it has covered over the years have even wound up being solved. One of the cases Robin covered extensively was the case known as 'The Boys on the Tracks". August 23, 1987. Saline County Arkansas. 16-year old Don Henry and 17-year old Kevin Ives head into the woods to do some late-night hunting, but never return. Hours later, the two boys are seen lying on some railroad tracks before they are run over by a cargo train and the medical examiner concludes they had fallen asleep after smoking marijuana and their deaths were accidental. However, Don and Kevin's families push for a new investigation, which uncovers evidence that they were violently attacked before their bodies were placed on the tracks. Throughout the years, a number of conspiracy theories emerge to suggest the boys were murdered as part of a cover-up involving drug trafficking, but no one is ever charged with the crime. “The Trail Went Cold” released a two-part episode about this convoluted story for their five-year anniversary show. This is a preview of The Trail Went Cold's coverage of the case and you can find the rest of the story by subscribing to The Trail Went Cold wherever you listen to podcasts or by visiting their website

Welcome to #Millennial, the home of pretend adulting and REAL talk! Welcome back Micah! It must be an election year - we'll see you again in 2026. ;) BREAKING NEWS: The team behind #Millennial and MuggleCast has launched a new pop-culture centric show - What the Hype?! is the third podcast baby we've been ruminating on for quite some time. Join us on this next podcasting journey! Want a taste of what to expect on What the Hype?! Look no further than today's discussion of the recently announced Hunger Games spinoff. Does it feel icky that Scholastic and Lionsgate made this joint announcement, introducing an upcoming novel that is already in the early stages of being adapted to a film? Everyone loves an origin story, right? Or do they? How does 'Hunger Games' compare to other major literary/film fandoms, like 'Harry Potter' and 'Twilight?' #Millennial decides 2024: the results are in, and our Patrons have decreed that the official name for our listeners is.... PALs! (Like Pam, Andrew, Laura, get it?) What's a third space? If you didn't know this term, you're not the only one. Third places are settings a person frequents beyond their home (the first place) and work (the second place). If you're now realizing you don't have a third space, you're also not alone! Many third spaces were shuttering even before the pandemic, and now that we're accustomed to being at home even more post-COVID, it's harder to get back in the habit. Andrew and Pam are our resident third space girlies, while Laura and Micah realize they are... lacking in the third space department. Oops. Andrew, a very supportive and wise friend, gives Laura some real talk that she can't make podcasting her ONLY third space. What are some tips that can help people find new third spaces? MeetUp, joining a book club, joining local Facebook groups and subreddits. There's no theme to this week's recommendations sorry not sorry: SpotMyUV stickers for knowing when it's time to reapply sunscreen (Andrew), Noteful for taking physical notes on your tablet (Pam), 'The Boys' season 4 on Amazon Prime (Laura), and our first few episodes of What the Hype?! and the book The Mindful Body (Micah). And in this week's installment of After Dark: We reflect (and lament) the passage of time, inspired by this satirical piece from the New Yorker. Where did the time go? One minute we were the youth, and now we're just waiting for the younger generations to come up with the millennial equivalent of "Ok Boomer." Some shit that feels like happened yesterday happened well over a decade ago, and we're shook. But now the tea: what cosmetic procedures are Andrew and Laura getting ready to do because #vanity.
