This week on The Commentary Booth, Jamie Apps and That Movie Guy Harry Argyle step into the cage to break down A24's hard-hitting new biopic The Smashing Machine, directed by Benny Safdie and starring Dwayne Johnson, Emily Blunt, and Ryan Bader. This episode delivers a deep dive into Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's transformative performance as UFC and Pride legend Mark Kerr, exploring the brutal highs of his fighting career and the devastating lows of his personal struggles with addiction. We dissect the film's raw power, from Emily Blunt's Oscar-worthy supporting role to the visceral fight choreography that captures the lawless early days of MMA. Is this the role that redefines The Rock's career? How does it stack up against other A24 sports classics like The Iron Claw and Uncut Gems? And does it truly capture the infamous brutality of the real "Smashing Machine"?Highlights Breakdown: - The magic of fighting and the euphoria of winning - How addiction, arrogance, and painkillers led to Kerr's devastating losses - Dwayne Johnson's career-defining dramatic turn - The Pride Grand Prix prize vs today's UFC payouts - Why A24's grounded realism makes this one of the most powerful sports dramas in yearsTune in for a knockout conversation filled with expert analysis, behind-the-scenes trivia, and a passionate look at one of the year's most anticipated films. This week's episode is brought to you byAustralian Wrestling CardsCheck out more great content from Pario Magazine on our website.-------------------------------------------------------------SUPPORT PARIO MAGAZINE & THE COMMENTARY BOOTH- PATREON- BUY MERCH- AMAZON PRIME VIDEO- TUBEBUDDY- Subscribe to AEW Plus using my code (q0yydoz) to earn $10 in FITE credit- Shop Online With Honey- Shop Online With SatechiMY EQUIPMENT- Elgato Facecam- Rode PodMic- Elgato Wave Mic Arm LP- Streamlabs Talk StudioFOLLOW JAMIE ON SOCIAL MEDIA- Twitter- Facebook- Instagram- TikTokFOLLOW PARIO MAGAZINE ON SOCIAL MEDIA- Twitter- Facebook- Instagram
Thomas and Frank kick off a running series to assemble a living “Hall of Fame” of 100 movies covered on Challenge Accepted. In this first pass, they lock in the opening 20 picks across adventure, animation, sci-fi, horror, and sports drama. Along the way they talk performance standouts, scenes that shaped their taste, and how future rewatches and listener votes could bump titles up or off the board. Timestamps and Topics 00:03:52 Big Fish and why it still wrecks us in different seasons of life 00:05:07 Hook as 90s Goonies energy and a Robin Williams showcase 00:06:49 Tombstone and the definitive Doc Holliday performance 00:08:13 Raiders of the Lost Ark and the problem of recasting Indy 00:12:52 The Prestige and discovering a top tier Nolan on rewatch 00:14:48 Interstellar nomination and why it grew with repeat viewings 00:17:12 The Shining as prestige horror and a genre pivot point 00:18:23 In Time gets discussed but does not make the cut for now 00:20:00 Across the Spider Verse moves in after a better audio experience 00:22:47 Planes, Trains and Automobiles lands as a comedy essential 00:24:43 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990) and its surprising emotional weight 00:28:38 Studio Ghibli slot: Spirited Away talk and the case for Kiki's Delivery Service 00:30:24 Dune: Part Two enters as modern epic sci-fi 00:34:38 Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and how the evolving list could reshuffle later 00:36:55 The Empire Strikes Back as the Star Wars representative 00:39:11 Jurassic Park and the marriage of practical and digital effects 00:41:02 The Iron Claw and a note on wrestling stories we will cover next 00:42:52 Superman (1978) closes the 20 with an all time origin story 00:48:27 Wrap up, what is coming next, and how listeners can influence the rankings The First 20 (Working List) Big Fish Hook Tombstone Raiders of the Lost Ark The Prestige Interstellar The Shining Spider Man: Across the Spider Verse Planes, Trains and Automobiles Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990) Spirited Away or Kiki's Delivery Service (Ghibli slot) Dune: Part Two Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 The Empire Strikes Back Jurassic Park The Iron Claw Superman (1978) Plus a few near misses and future candidates Key Takeaways This is a living list. Titles can move as we review more films and as listeners weigh in. Emotional resonance matters as much as craft, from TMNT's farmhouse sequence to Big Fish's generational pull. Genre representatives help keep variety, like Empire for Star Wars and a Ghibli pick for animation. Craft notes: Jurassic Park's blend of practical and digital still sets the bar, and Vol. 3 sparks a James Gunn redemption chat. Community plan: we will combine Frank's rankings, Thomas's rankings, and a listener ballot to shape the master list. Quotes “The little things are the big things.” “He smashed it, dropped the mic, and went to DC.” “If you see a puddle shake, you're waiting for the T-Rex.” Call to Action Enjoying the Hall of Fame project? When it comes to professional wrestling in popular culture, there are two eras: before and after The Wrestler. The 2008 film from director Darren Aronofsky changed the way wrestlers were perceived by the public. It used to be "out of sight, out of mind," but now everyone knows the toll pro wrestling takes on people's bodies, minds, and lives. In fact, we don't think there would be Dark Side of the Ring, The Iron Claw, or all these nostalgia podcasts without it. Join us as we discuss Mickey Rourke's performance, the movie's legacy, and which pro wrestler likely inspired Randy the Ram.

Slam, Dah Duh Duh, Dah Duh Duh! The podcast is revving up for WrestleMania this week and in honor of this we are joined by Cazzey Louis Cereghino. This week, we're breaking our hiatus to break from our format, as we are not breaking down a film this week so much as hyping one up, as we get ready for the movie event of the summer by over-analyzing the final trailer for Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning. If you're a long-time listener or even someone who's only heard a few episodes you probably know that the Mission: Impossible movies are a permanent hyper-fixation around here, so we had to get together to discuss a preview loaded wall-to-wall with That Guy character actors, including the return of our beloved boy Shea Whigham, and even that one guy from the first movie who had to go have diarrhea. Everyone is here! Plus: J Mo's got a theatrical field report having been out to the VIFF premiere of the pro wrestling biopic Queen of the Ring that included a live Q&A with the film's director and star, and as usual we catch up on what's been filling our Letterboxd. Other works discussed on this episode include Kimi, Rushmore, The Accountant, The Pitt, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Avatar: The Way of Water, Aquaman, Campfire Tales, Are You Afraid of the Dark?, The Twister: Caught in the Storm, Twisters, Tenet, Deja Vu, The Iron Claw, Flow, The Wild Robot, Rope, Stranger Than Fiction and Terminator: Salvation. Not sure when we'll back together again, but we can say when we do we will be discussing Warren Beatty's 1990 comic book detective noir Dick Tracy, a movie that is literally never available to stream and may never be despite being produced and distributed by Disney. We've also got while-they're-in-theatres episodes planned over the next month for both The Accountant 2 and Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning, so look forward to those, and until then, we'll see you at the movies!!
