In today's episode, HeHe sits down with Allison Yarrow to discuss her new book, 'Birth Control: The Insidious Power of Men Over Motherhood.' What happens when hospital culture is rooted in tradition and not evidence? How does it impact patient care when incentives are set up to reward providers for doing expensive surgeries and seeing as many patients as possible, but theres no incentive for supporting unmedicated, biological labor and meeting patients where they're at in this journey? What happens when a system that is designed to be FOR PROFIT is faced with the decision profits or people— and, they can only choose one? In this conversation, journalist Allison Yarrow and Kimberly discuss Allison's new book “Birth Control: The Insidious Power of Men Over Motherhood.” They go in depth about the culture and systems of perinatal birth care. They explore Allison's extensive research around the differences between home birth care and hospital birth care, and go into depth about their personal experiences with each scenario. They wonder how future generations will approach their birth, as well as the deep impact of race on varying birth experience. With all of the information out there, they ask how do you prepare for birth?   Bio Allisoni Yarrow is a journalist for nearly two decades (in newsrooms like NBC News, Newsweek and The Daily Beast, and Vice), a national magazine finalist, the author of 90s Bitch (finalist for the Los Angeles Press Club Book Award), and she has written about the shortcomings of the perinatal experience in America for the New York Times, the Washington Post, USA Today, Vox, Harper's Bazaar, and Insider. Her new book Birth Control: The Insidious Power of Men Over Motherhood, which is out July 18 and arose out of my TED Talk. With the recent news that maternal mortality has risen 40 percent to the highest level in our lifetime, this subject couldn't be more important. The book draws on extensive reporting, interviews, an original survey of 1300 birthing people and mothers, and my own personal experiences, to document how women are controlled, traumatized, injured, and even killed, because of traditionalist practices of medical professionals and hospitals during pregnancy, labor, childbirth, and after.    What You'll Hear How birth procedures and techniques were not developed by science by traditions? The overriding of midwives knowledge by doctors. How has birth become such a profitable medical field? Why C-sections are so prominent despite their limited need? How does home birth care differ from hospital care? What kind of mother culture do we need around birth trauma? The pressure to educate onesellf in the perinatal experience. What role does agency play in the birth experience? What needs to change about the system of birth? How will future generations experience birth care? Our bodies perceive surgery as interruption. The importance of sex education to the birth experience. The racial dimensions of birth culture.   Links www.allisonyarrow.com Instagram: @aliyarrow

You are going to want to sit back and take notes for this one. Today's guest Bintou Diarra and I get in-depth about birth trauma and the current state of maternal health care in the US. We discuss the origins of the issues infecting the medicalized birth system which has taken hold today, including our earliest indoctrination into the female body as pathology in sex ed and structural racism and implicit bias. Bintou details the culture most physicians are steeped in and how it leads directly to negative outcomes in the birthing process. She explains why having a doula may help mitigate some of this and also why a doula can not fix it all. We discuss preeclampsia, endometriosis, and the horrific birth outcome inequities for people of color. Finally, we cover power inequity and imagine a restructuring of the system which would allow for empowering birth stories for all. In this episode, Bintou references and recommends the book Birth Control by Allison Yarrow and the documentary Below the Belt, the Last Health Taboo both of which are excellent resources for continued education on this topic. Allison Yarrow is an award-winning journalist, speaker, and author of Birth Control: The Insidious Power of Men Over Motherhood (Hachette/Seal Press, July 2023).  She is also the author of 90s Bitch: Media, Culture, and the Failed Promise of Gender Equality (Harper Perennial, 2018). She has written about health, politics, and gender for many publications including the New York Times, the Washington Post, Vox, Insider, USA Today, Time, and Newsweek. She was a national magazine award finalist, a TED resident, an Aspen Ideas Festival fellow, and a grantee of the International Women's Media Foundation. She produced the award-winning Vice News documentary “Misconception,” and gave a TED talk called “What to Expect Post-Expecting.”  Dr. Kate and Allison talk about how modern medicine should make pregnancy and childbirth safer for all. But in Allison's book Birth Control, she reveals how women are controlled, traumatized, injured, and even killed because of the traditionalist practices of medical professionals and hospitals. They talk about the dangerous misogyny that permeates pregnancy, birth, and early motherhood in our hospitals. Kate and Allison also talk about how doctors were trained by midwives and then stole control of birth from them in the 19th century. Allison touches on specific birthing practices that are steamrolling women by a male-dominated medical establishment that has everyone convinced that birthing bodies are inherently flawed and that every pregnancy is a crisis that it alone can “solve.” Misogyny and racism, not scientific evidence and support, shape the overwhelming majority of America's four million annual births. Drawing on extensive reporting, expert interviews, an original survey of 1,300 mothers, and her own personal experiences, Yarrow documents in her book how modern maternal health care is insidiously, purposefully designed to take power from women to the detriment of their physical and mental health—not just during labor, but for years after. She shares this in her conversation with Dr. Kate and discusses better ways this can be handled They also talk about a new post-partum depression drug and so much more. According to a recent survey of over 1300 women, 56% experienced dissatisfaction with their births. Unfortunately, this statistic reveals only a glimpse into a very broken system and the reality for birthing women in our country, where 30% report some form of trauma in their birth experience.  So, where do we go from here? On today's episode of On Health, I'm joined by award-winning journalist Allison Yarrow, who is on a mission to change this. Allison's work centers on exposing how modern maternal healthcare strips women of power, causing harm to not only our physical well-being but also our mental well-being. Together, we break down the complexities of birth, from trauma in the hospital to exploring home birth as an option, the lack of evidence in common obstetric practices, and the importance of postpartum support.   Join us as we discuss: How Allison's home birth opened her eyes to the flawed maternal healthcare system Birth trauma and the importance of trauma-informed care The problem with electronic fetal monitoring and how much technological intervention is really needed for birth What Allison's ideal prenatal and postpartum support model would look like The benefits of midwifery care The internalized fear surrounding birth and how to minimize it Why birthing women are the real experts Diastasis Recti, pelvic floor therapy, and the pressure to "bounce back" Allison's mission with her new book, "Birth Control"  And more Whether you're pregnant and feeling anxious about giving birth or have given birth and experienced trauma, I hope this conversation brings you peace in knowing that you aren't alone and that it's not your fault, and that gives you confidence to embrace your power, heal, and seek the care you deserve going forward.  Thank you so much for taking the time to tune in to your body, yourself, and this podcast!
