I am joined this week by the incredible Susan McPherson, founder and CEO of McPherson Strategies and author of "The Lost Art of Connecting." Susan is a renowned connector, communications strategist, and corporate social responsibility expert who has dedicated her career to helping businesses create meaningful social impact. In this heartfelt conversation, Susan shares her journey from being "the tiniest one in the room" who had to find her voice early to becoming a powerhouse in the world of social impact. We explore her childhood in upstate New York, where her academic parents instilled in her the value of connecting others through their morning ritual of clipping newspaper articles to share with friends and colleagues – an early form of social networking that shaped Susan's approach to relationships. Susan opens up about the profound loss of her mother at age 21 and how this tragedy shaped her financial mindset and career trajectory. Listen as she recounts her path from waitressing to fund her year abroad in Denmark, to working at USA Today, to eventually launching McPherson Strategies at age 48 without any formal business training. Susan's story demonstrates how personal values, lived experiences, and a commitment to service can create a meaningful career and lasting impact. Key Topics: How to start building your network by making conversations about other people The surprising power of "clip and share" - Susan's parents' pre-internet social networking ritual Why financial independence must come before entrepreneurial risks How Susan navigated a successful career despite never taking business courses The value of maxing out your 401(k) from day one (and why Susan has done this consistently for decades) Why angel investing can be about learning and impact, not just financial returns Building the courage to launch your own business after 45 Connect with Susan online: Website: https://mcpstrategies.com/ Book: The Lost Art of Connecting LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/susanmcpherson/ Twitter: @susanmcp1 Instagram: @susanmcp1   Find more from Syama Bunten: Instagram: @syama.co, @gettingrichpod Website: https://syamabunten.com/ Download Syama's Guide to Getting Rich: www.syamabunten.com Women & Wealth Catalyst Summit: https://women.win/ Big Delta Capital: www.bigdeltacapital.com

So let's understand that and work together.” Lauren Sorkin on Electric Ladies Podcast To kick off the first interview of 2025, we're diving into a topic that affects us all: Can the cities we live in truly provide what we need to thrive? With over half of the global population now living in urban areas – a figure projected to hit 70% by 2050 – cities are at the forefront of the climate transition. Join me as I talk with Lauren Sorkin, Co-founder and Executive Director of the Resilient Cities Network, about how cities can evolve into thriving ecosystems that withstand the shocks and stressors of climate change. “Companies are not just being more strategic about corporate social impact, but are taking on the role of activists themselves. Consumers and employees now expect companies to be vocal and to protect the rights of our people and our planet. CEOs are the voices of companies and can no longer remain neutral and silent as our world grapples with serious challenges.” Susan McPherson, McPherson Memo  Company leaders are in a quandary. They want their organizations to be seen as good corporate citizens but they don't know how to deal with the complicated, emotionally-charged and overlapping crises we are all facing today. The barbaric attack on innocent Israelis by Hamas on October 7th and the massive military response by Israel on Gaza alone – on top of the war in Ukraine and attacks on democracy from American influentials and climate change – are paralyzing many private sector leaders. What should they do?  Listen to Susan McPherson, CEO of McPherson Strategies and highly-regarded veteran communications leader, explain how leaders should/could manage this fraught time in this candid and powerful conversation with Electric Ladies Podcast host Joan Michelson. You'll hear: What a good corporate citizen really is. What “green hushing” is and where it's coming from – and how it's not anti-ESG. How to respond to complicated geopolitical crises How to be an authentic leader and who are some role models for that. Plus, insightful career advice, such as…. “it's doing an internal audit of yourself and learning what your superpowers are, and then being able to show up in the world, offering support to others. And I guarantee you, the support will come back. It may not be the next day, it may not be the next week, but over the arc of your career and connecting is hard….(and) Lead with kindness, lead with compassion, listen more than you speak.” Susan McPherson on Electric Ladies podcast   Read Joan's Forbes articles here. Susan mentions the concept of hosting in her book “The Lost Art of Connecting”. What this means is, you don't need to be the person in charge of a space in order to host other people in it. Hosting can be a secret super power that allows you to get your grounding in a new situation, as well as a vehicle for making connections from a place of generosity. To quote Susan: “Bringing people together, you're making that magic happen and you are helping people feel seen, heard, and listened to. And I fervently believe that the greatest gift we can give one another is exactly that.” If we can understand the peoples greatest wish is to be seen and heard, and incorporate that into how we interact with them, we build much more fruitful and satisfying connections. It's extremely disarming without being manipulative.   We often think people like us because of what we say, but it turns out talking less and asking questions makes us more likeable. Use that curiosity: understanding other people's perspective grows our empathy and helps us understand both the world and ourselves a little better.   LESSON: You can't “hack” body language.   Connect with Susan:  Twitter and Instagram: @Susanmcp1 Company: www.mcsptrategies.com Book: TheLostArtofConnecting.com LinkedIn:  https://www.linkedin.com/in/susanmcpherson/ Susan McPherson is a serial connector, angel investor, and corporate responsibility expert. When you have a good connection with yourself, you can show up in the world authentically and attract the right people, connect, and build relationships.  If you don't have a strong sense of self, you have the potential to go out and build the wrong kind of connections, damage the ones that should be healthy, and have distant relationships with people you're supposed to be close with. You may not be living the experiences that you want or having the conversations that you want.  And that's what brought me to today's guest, Susan McPherson. Susan is the author of “The Lost Art of Connecting,” which came out in 2021. Her whole goal with this book is to build a much-needed practical guide to building human connection. Her book came out after the pandemic, but she actually began writing it before the pandemic. Because of this, all of this time that Susan had to spend remotely helped her develop ways of connecting with people that start digitally and build in real life. Her book is especially helpful in the post-pandemic world, as many people once in isolation have had to readjust to the new social climate. Susan considers herself a serial connector, which is also a goal of mine. I'm interested to learn a lot of her tactics, her strategies, and the way that she approaches building human connections. As you listen to this, think to yourself, “Who am I as a person? What's my relationship with myself?” Also, think about what you need to work on. There will be opportunities to learn and apply some of Susan's tools into your everyday life.    Find Susan here: “The Lost Art of Connecting” book: https://www.amazon.com/Lost-Art-Connecting-Meaningful-Relationships/dp/1260469883/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3PCMOBH770KCG&keywords=the+lost+art+of+connecting+susan+mcpherson&qid=1678476187&sprefix=the+lost+art+of+con%2Caps%2C281&sr=8-1    Find Nick Thompson here:   Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nthompson513/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXipWcR8Pit6vYHd1ZcKgKg

Susan McPherson is an author, founder, speaker and consultant, but ask anyone who knows her and they'll all come up with the same title: "connector." It was more than a little ironic, then, that her book, "The Lost Art of Connecting," was published smack in the middle of the pandemic, at the height of social distancing, masks and faces in tiny zoom boxes. (The book came out on March 30, 2021, when most of us weren't even vaccinated yet). For Susan, who loves connecting with friends, connecting those friends, and then watching those connections bear fruit (sometimes in the form of further connections!), a pandemic book launch meant missing out on in-person events with her community, but a pandemic launch for this book meant bringing it into the world at a time when it was sorely needed. The art of connecting truly felt lost in those times, and Susan found new purpose in bringing connection back through her book events - and more than a little validation that her topic was actually one of vital importance. In this episode of "Your New Life Blend," host Shoshanna Hecht talks with Susan about and how a foundation of strong connections has supported her in making brave, bold decisions in her life, and how small, simple acts of thoughtfulness can help us build stronger, more meaningful relationships in our personal and professional lives.

As we kick off 2023, many of us may be reflecting on the past year and thinking ahead about how we want to show up and who we want to connect with in the new year. This topic may be especially important, given that research shows that loneliness increased for Americans during the pandemic. In this episode of Breaking the Bias, Holly Corbett, VP of Content for Consciously Unbiased, spoke to Susan McPherson, author of The Lost Art of Connecting: The Gather, Ask, Do Method for Building Meaningful Relationships, to find out how we can use technology for good to reverse the growing trend of disconnection, build more meaningful relationships and authentically diversify our networks and overcome similarity bias. Relationship building takes time, but Susan shares practical advice for how we can focus on making connections and expand our networks without feeling overwhelmed. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/consciously-unbiased/message

After the tragic loss of her mother in a fire set by an arsonist in 1986 at the Dupont Plaza Hotel in Puerto Rico, Susan McPherson committed herself to applying the lessons she learned from her parents about the importance of meaningfully connecting with others by offering to help.  In this episode, we speak with Susan about overcoming our fears of networking through the “Gather, Ask, Do” method, which she describes in her book, The Lost Art of Connecting, and which was named a Best Business Book of 2021 by Soundview Magazine.  Susan begins from the premise that we are always learning and that meaningfully connecting with others is far more rewarding if we start by asking, “how can I help?” rather than “what can you do for me?”  From Susan's perspective, a simple change in mindset can move us out of the “what's in it for me?” type of transactional networking, to one of meaningful engagement.  Not only does this develop deeper relationships, but it drives business results, breeds innovation and creativity, and most importantly, serves as an engine for greater happiness and longevity.  Episode Links and Resources:The Lost Art of ConnectingSusan McPhersonMcPherson StrategiesDupont Hotel Fire - ArticleSupport this podcast by subscribing and reviewing!Music is considered “royalty-free” and discovered on Audio Blocks.Technical Podcast Support by: Jon Keur at Wayfare Recording Co.© 2022 Silver Linings Media LLC. Did you know that connecting is entirely different than networking? The mindset is different according to Susan McPherson, author of "The Lost Art of Connecting: The Gather, Ask, Do Method for Building Meaningful Business Relationships." As a social impact strategist, she has developed a methodology that turns certain nonprofit conventions on their head, as we learn in this episode of What the Fundraising. Our fundraising superpower starts with broadening beyond the goal of racking up dollar commitments to instead ask: “How can I be of use? How can I contribute? What can I provide?” Corporations and other funders want to feel their contributions are more than transactional; that they are cultivating community, offering employees ways to engage, learning and helping think creatively about the issues of our times. Nonprofits bring to the table huge resources, knowledge, and ability. It's a value-add that should not be underestimated! Susan walks us through her methodology and offers terrific practical advice for upping our levels of engagement and building confidence. She's also reflecting on what defines a nourishing workplace and some of the evolving standards for behavior, programs and that promise meaningful corporate change. Millennials and Gen Zers are demanding it!  Finally, we wrap up with Susan's thoughts on everyday opportunities for advocacy and engagement.
