Monica Lewinsky is an activist, podcaster and producer. At the age of 24, Lewinsky, a White House intern, found herself in the eye of a global scandal. She was subjected to a mass public shaming - losing her livelihood, her anonymity and the future she had once imagined for herself. Now, 51 Lewinsky has garnered a new generation of admirers, who with the advent of social media and shifting cultural tides, have rightly reinterpreted the shocking way she was treated. Her podcast, which launched earlier this year, is called ‘Reclaiming' and features interviews with guests who are in the process of reclaiming their own narratives, just as she was forced to do. She joins us to talk about her experiences with shame, her perfectionism and why the pain she went through has given her purpose. Hollywood couldn't figure out how to sell a historical fiction political comedy about teenagers set twenty-five years in the past, but we're big fans of Andrew Fleming's 1999 film Dick and we're here to talk about it! Join in as we discuss teenage celebrity crushes, child stardom, an odd choice for weed storage, and a deep cast of sketch performers. Mok O'`Keeffe returns as co-host and, together with Phil, explores the complex subject of privacy with Tiffany Jenkins, whose new book Strangers and Intimates makes the case that we need to restore the idea of a truly private life back to the heart of our society. So when does the right to know over-rule our right to privacy?Ranging from the Reformation through Victorian melodramas and the struggles of Monica Lewinsky in the 1990s, then coming right up to date with the ‘privacy for me, exposure for thee' mantra of the celebrity tell-all (such as Meghan and Harry with Oprah Winfrey), this is a fascinating and wide ranging conversation. As a podcaster, crafting narratives in the public eye means making mistakes along the way is inevitable. But I've started to wonder—what if those very mistakes could be the secret sauce to creating relatable, engaging, and transformative storytelling? Alongside Eman Ismael, host of the multi-award-winning podcast Mistakes that made me, we explored the importance of embracing the notion of learning from failure to build authenticity and connection with audiences worldwide in public, exemplified perfectly by Monica Lewinsky's newest podcast, Reclaiming with Monica Lewinsky. We're joined by Patty Pop Culture for a very real conversation about how quickly we can go from pop culture to mob culture. We unpack media literacy, cancel culture, and why parasocial relationships feel so real (because to your brain, they kind of are). From PR spins we saw with Blake Lively/Justin Baldoni to the relentless obsession with figures like Britney, Hailey, Miley, and Monica Lewinsky. We're taking a deeper look at how connection became consumption, and why the women we idolize are so often the ones we're quickest to tear apart.Follow Patty on IG & TikTok and YouTubeFollow us on IG and TikTok Follow Chloe & Alexa

Monica Lewinsky (Reclaiming) is an activist, writer, and podcast host. Monica returns to the Armchair Expert to discuss confronting deep trauma listening to her own voice while making her new podcast Reclaiming, the argument for not killing a darling even if it's unflattering, and how it's naturally harder to give the nudge into vulnerability in a conversation because she wants her guests to feel safe. Monica and Dax talk about the theory that people are preserved at the age they become famous, how all the personal inner work she did entering her fifth decade helped her grow in ways she couldn't have imagined, and why she really dislikes the word ‘reinvention.' Monica explains how we truly are evolving into a society of spectra rather than binaries, feeling younger because she was forced to mature faster in some areas while being stunted in others, and the acceptance she achieved turning 50 and how freeing it is to be happy and comfortable with who she is now.Follow Armchair Expert on the Wondery App or wherever you get your podcasts. #206: Lieutenant Colonel Todd Beer was the Air Force One pilot for both the President Bill Clinton & President George W Bush administrations, as well as the 9/11 terrorists attacks and many other influential historical moments.Todd grew up in Indiana and his basketball success earned him an opportunity to play college basketball at the highly coveted United State Air Force Academy. After surviving a plane crash while he was in high school he never had a desire to fly. During his time at the USAFA he started over 108 straight games, overcame adversity, grew in courage, persisted through flight school, and competed at the highest levels. All of which were building blocks to a distinguished career in aviation. He shares the tense moments on 9/11 when minimal information was at hand to make critical decisions to safely fly the president. Other moments include covertly flying Air Force one into Bagdad for President Bush's surprise visit and flying Present Clinton right after news of the Monica Lewinsky scandal surfaced. More importantly he shares his story and all of the lessons he learned not just to have a successful career, but also a successful family. Enjoy the show!
