Jonah Goldberg, like Plato's cave-man philosopher, has briefly returned from the land of book writing and enlightenment to ruminate before us poor, shadow-watching mortals. Jonah considers the origin of the term slush fund, waxes poetic on military etymology, and reflects on the Lewinsky scandal, all before getting stuck in on feminism, John Bolton, the republican spirit, Graham Platner, party self-sabotage, and the cult of authenticity.  Show Notes: —The Dispatch at the 92nd Street Y —Robert Nisbet - Prejudices: A Philosophical Dictionary —Jonah's underrated second book —Jonah's mom on TV —Friday's DisPod  —Wednesday G-File —NYT Graham Platner piece —The Argument —Cult of authenticity G-File —Suicide of the West The Remnant is a production of The Dispatch, a digital media company covering politics, policy, and culture from a nonpartisan perspective. It's the first Friday of the month, which means it's time for a new book to read! This month's selection is Julia Langbein's phenomenal novel Dear Monica Lewinsky, and Julia is today's guest on the show. The book is about Jean, whose life was derailed the summer after her sophomore year in college. When she travels to France to study medieval religious history, she meets a charismatic professor and decides to pursue an affair with him. The repercussions of that choice echo through her life, and she's still haunted as an adult. When she realizes her summer abroad was the same summer the Monica Lewinsky story broke in the United States, Jean prays to Monica, asking for forgiveness. That's when a vision of Monica Lewinsky appears to Jean, and she's able to relive her summer in France. When Tom Perrotta blurbed Julia's first novel American Mermaid, he said, “It probably shouldn't work, but it succeeds brilliantly, thanks to Julia Langbein's tonal control and wicked sense of humor,” and the same can be said for Dear Monica Lewinsky. This book may be hard to describe, but it's a joy to read, and it's also a searing examination of female desire and the prices we pay to pursue it.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

When a Senate campaign gets hit with a sexting scandal, the spouse is supposed to disappear. Amy Gertner grabbed her phone, walked into a cloud of Maine blackflies, and recorded the most effective crisis response of the cycle.Everyone is covering the Wall Street Journal texts. Molly is covering the betrayal underneath them, and the moment a candidate who built his brand on owning his record reached for the worst page in the 2026 crisis playbook.Chapters:0:00 — The Reddit Bomb That Finally Detonated on Platner4:30 — How Amy Gertner's Confession Reached Genevieve McDonald8:30 — Linda Tripp, Monica Lewinsky and the Betrayal Pattern13:04 — Amy Gertner's Blackfly Video Goes Viral on X18:01 — Why Amy Nailed the Platner Playbook Solo20:00 — The NPR Interview Showing What Accountability Looks Like22:29 — The Vrabel Playbook Platner Borrowed By Mistake27:30 — Barney Frank, Janet Mills and the Democratic Party Distance30:00 — Silda Spitzer Versus the Amy Gertner Standing-By Model33:00 — The High Road Takeaway and Why Platner Is LimpingWe dissect:• Why Reddit was supposed to be Graham Platner's kryptonite, and the one trait that kept disarming every landmine until this one• The Bernie Sanders rally moment when Amy disclosed the texts to political director Genevieve McDonald, the inciting incident the WSJ buried• The Linda Tripp parallel and why the public judges the telling of a scandal as harshly as the act itself• "This is like my 20th take" — the unedited blackfly video Amy posted from a road in Sullivan, Maine, and why the imperfection is the point• The NPR interview that aired right before the WSJ broke, where Platner answered directly on the SS-resembling tattoo and Jake Auchincloss calling him disqualifying• The exact moment Platner called the texts "gossip," blamed the press, and reached for the Mike Vrabel playbook — the worst page in any 2026 crisis manual• Barney Frank criticizing Platner from hospice in Ogunquit, Janet Mills as the party's preferred candidate, and what "same technique, opposite loyalty" actually looks like• Silda Spitzer standing reluctantly behind Eliot versus Amy Gertner standing forward for Graham, with Amy Vrabel's conspicuous absence as the counter-exampleThis is not a recap of the WSJ story. It is a forensic look at why the spouse out-executed the candidate. TrustTalk - It's all about Trust

In this replay of a 2023 interview, Severin de Wit speaks with Economist Benjamin Ho - Professor of Economics at Vassar College and author of Why Trust Matters: An Economist's Guide to the Ties That Bind Us. What if trust isn't just a feeling, but something humans have been calculating for thousands of years? Ben Ho uses game theory to explain why we cooperate at all, why we keep promises that cost us, and why the words I am sorry almost never work the way we expect. Ben explains why an apology only repairs trust when it carries a real cost. He shares what an experiment with Uber revealed about late rides and unhappy customers, and why Bill Clinton never apologized over Monica Lewinsky - exposing the hidden trade-off between being liked and being respected. The conversation travels from early hunter-gatherer societies, where the first written records were accounting rather than poetry, to the Paris Climate Agreement - a deal built almost entirely on trust rather than enforcement. Ben makes the case that trust is the quiet infrastructure beneath markets, contracts, and treaties. Take it away, and none of it holds. [ Due to the holiday season, we are publishing this interview again. It was first published in May 2023 as episode 63]

Ashley St. Clair is all of us. Well, she might not be you. She might not even be me. Although I see some of myself in her. But she is this mess we've built. Like all of us, she has played a role in this ongoing virtual Civil War between Left and Right, played out amid tangled algorithms, giant egos, hurt feelings, and cash flow. She is the same age as my daughter, just 28 years old, but it feels like she's lived five lifetimes. She has shapeshifted from MAGA to having Elon Musk's baby, to a public fight over said baby, to throwing herself at the feet of the Left, branding herself as a one-woman confessional who will dangle all of the dirty details of “the MAGA cult” like bloody chum to hungry sharks. She is smart enough to know two things. First, the Left still controls most of our culture. If you want book deals, successful podcasts with the top-tier advertisers, or stories about you in the New York Times, or even movie deals about your life, you have to be accepted by them. And second, they won't accept you unless you bring the goods. And boy does she ever. What do you want to know, she says on her TikTok as she applies gobs of makeup she doesn't need - contour, foundation, concealer, blush, more concealer, more contour, powder. Do you want to know MAGA is a cult? Here you go. Are they racists? Oh yeah, she says, as she dabs her eyes with a powder puff. She might not realize it, but her makeup is a metaphor for the role she's playing now, a real person hiding under layers and layers of disguise. Who is she this time? She's the one talking to Jennifer Welch, the Wicked Witch of the Left:She was on with the chipper lunatic Suzanne Lambert:And Haley on the Go:And the most cringey of all was a giggly appearance with our favorite Cartier Communist, Hasan Piker. Baby Mama BluesAshley has not gone full Monica Lewinsky and claimed victimhood to excuse her role in becoming yet another baby mama for the Henry VIII of Silicon Valley, Elon Musk. She does seem to take some responsibility for agreeing to go to bed with him upon first meeting. He even asked her what name she liked. Elon was upfront about what he wanted from her, and she seemed fully on board. As a hot conservative female who already had one kid in her early 20s, her ovaries were calling Elon's name. He slid into her DMs before sliding into other places - yes, says Ashley, she joined the Mile High Club, courtesy of Elon's private jet.But one thing an influencer, however fluid in politics, must preserve is their platform. What good is having the richest man in the world's baby if you can't brag about it? Be known for it? Have instant status because of it? Not to mention the child having to wander around the planet, not being Elon's son, while everyone knows he is, like that b*****d son of Henry VIII.St. Clair is throwing around the figure of $40 million to buy her off, but she doesn't say exactly who is offering it. Musk had originally offered a deal with $15 million up front and then $100,000 per month to raise the child, money most people couldn't imagine in an entire lifetime. But that came with an NDA. She refused.Musk has said he gave her $2.5 million up front, then $500,000 per year. She has said he slashed her child support payments, causing her to sell her Tesla to cover expenses. Either way, whatever she's gotten is not enough, not in 2026 when the platform is everything. Ashley St. Clair wants more. And in that way, too, she is all of us and this grotesque online machine we've all helped build, where a person can become a star overnight, then the object of scorn, with an angry mob attempting to destroy them as the entire internet watches. She was viciously attacked as a gold digger by MAGA, then they made AI porn of her, she says, even depicting her as an underage sex object, which is why she's suing Musk. How it started, how it's goingAshley St. Clair started her career as a blonde, appearing on Fox News pushing the MAGA line:And at the Babylon Bee, making content like this:Her past warring against the transgender community means it's iffy whether or not she'll ultimately get a pass, no matter the mea culpas she's handed out like candy. This TikTok user says forget it.After all, Ashley St. Clair wrote a children's book in hopes of saving some of the young from destroying their bodies. It kind of seemed like she believed it, right?Since then, however, she has found ways to get out of it. She's thrown herself at the mercy of prominent Democrats like podcaster David Pakman:She's talked about how ignorant she was, how she fell into a cult and didn't know what she was doing. She talks about her past of being locked away and home schooled, where she was isolated from other people, before going to college and hitting the party scene, and eventually, to hear her tell it, she ended up in a cult.I know what it feels like to believe in a movement, then get chewed up and spit out, and find myself in a place where I'm telling all of the secrets of my former side, trashing them to the delight of the opposition. I know what motivates her and why she so badly needs affirmation and acceptance. But confessing her sins wouldn't be enough for people whose ultimate goal is to end Trump and MAGA forever and retake power. They need a lot more than just confirmation of their mass delusions about Trump (he's Hitler!) and MAGA (it's a cult!).No, they needed a way to deny reality yet again and cast themselves as the real winners. How could they, the most perfect people in the world, have lost to Trump? Why did half the country reject them again? It's a truth they still can't face. Lucky for them, Ashley St. Clair has gifted them with the perfect way to explain the 2024 election. It was rigged by Elon Musk. The Democrats have done everything they know how to do to destroy Donald Trump and his MAGA army. They have framed him as a Russian spy, called him a racist, a rapist, a bigot, a dictator, a fascist, Hitler, a king, and a felon. They impeached him twice, indicted him four times, and attempted to throw him off the ballot in several states. He has survived three assassination attempts so far. They've obstructed everything he has tried to do, from cleaning up the streets to closing the border to bringing manufacturing back to stopping Iran from getting a nuke. He's stood up for women who are forced to deny reality by competing against biological boys. He's stood against “gender affirming care” that destroys the bodies of children who can't consent. If Trump is for it, they are against it. They have pressured all artists to take a side against half the country, in Hollywood, in music, at the Kennedy Center. They insist that supporting him is like supporting Hitler, even if he's beating back his own right flank by standing up for Israel. And yet, for the Left, he is the only thing standing in their way and for all of us the only bulwark against total societal control. It all sounds great because it absolves the Democrats of any blame. See, they did everything right. It wasn't a coup against a sitting president running for re-election or the installation of his Vice-President without a single vote. Or that she was a terrible candidate. No, it wasn't their fault they lost. It was Elon's space lasers. Now that she has their attention, the warnings are getting more urgent, just in time to prepare for the midterms. And that is the real gift Ashley St. Clair has laid at the feet of the side she hopes will embrace her, value her, accept her, and elevate her. If she can help them win elections, whether the midterms or 2028, she can destroy both Elon Musk and MAGA. Well, how could a $40 million payout even compare?I would just offer her one word of caution as someone who came from the Left. Don't tell them what they want to hear. Tell them what you know to be true because that's what they need to hear. Confirming their mass delusion only sinks them in deeper. They don't realize it yet, but their empire is in a state of collapse, and not a moment too soon. The counterculture is rising to take its place. When that happens, Ashley St. Clair will want to be more than just a footnote hitching a ride on a sinking ship. // This is a public episode. Imagine standing in a busy train station, asking strangers to answer a few questions. How many people would you need to approach before five say yes? In a now-classic study, Vanessa Bohns predicted twenty. The actual number was ten. People were almost twice as likely to agree as she expected, and two decades and more than 14,000 requests later, the finding still holds. We consistently underestimate how often others will say yes to us, and how hard it is for them to refuse. This is really a conversation about trust. We tend to assume that when someone agrees to a request, they have thought it through and decided the person asking can be trusted. Vanessa's research suggests something different. People often say yes in the moment because saying no is hard, not because they have decided to trust. The judgment about trust comes later, sometimes much later, and sometimes the trust we thought was there was never really there at all. In this episode we talk about why gratitude letters mean more than we expect, why Monica Lewinsky could call the same relationship consensual in 2014 and question it in 2018, how a single phone call from Countrywide Financial moved Moody's to reverse a credit rating overnight, and why telling people they have the right to refuse changes almost nothing, but giving them the words to do so changes a great deal. We also look at how moving so much of our professional and political life into email and text quietly erodes the trust we build with each other. Vanessa Bohns is the Braunstein Family Professor and Chair of Organizational Behavior at the ILR School at Cornell University. She is the author of You Have More Influence Than You Think, and her next book, Should I Say Something?, is out later this year.

Communications professor Allison Butler discusses her new book, The Judgment of Gender: How Women Are Centered and Silenced in Pop Culture with Spencer Graves. She compares how women like Britney Spears, Anita Hill, and Monica Lewinsky have been portrayed with the treatment of comparable males. She notes, for example, that, "in the years since the Dobbs (2022) decision, fully sentient female bodies have fewer legal rights than either fetuses or embryos. She asks, "Why aren't women allowed to be complicated?", documenting how men are allowed to abuse their power for personal gain, but women are more likely to be demonized for comparable offenses. Her recommendations include critical media literacy, asking how stories are told, and who gets to tell them. "The vast majority of the mainstream media in the United States are approved, produced, and distributed by private, for-profit corporations whose primary priority is profit. ... Once we understand that, we can work to make a change. We can say 'no' to unfair or limiting stories of women and girls by simply ignoring them (and therefore not contributing to further views, clicks, or likes of them, online), and we can actively push back by demanding change from media producers. Media producers profit off our attention; if we shift that attention, we may be able to shift their power." Butler is a senior lecturer and associate chair of Communication and Director of the Media Literacy Certificate Program at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She is author or co-author of multiple books and articles on the need for and implementation of critical media literacy, including the following: Educating media literacy: The need for critical media literacy in teacher education (Butler 2020), Key scholarship in media literacy: David Buckingham (Butler 2021), Critical media literacy and civic learning: Interactive explorations for students and teachers (Maloy et al. 2021), and The media and media: A guide to critical media literacy for young people (Project Censored and The Media Revolution Collective 2022). She also has a 2024 book on Surveillance Education: Navigating the Conspicuous Absence of Privacy in Schools (Higdon and Butler 2024). A moderated discussion of these issues is available in the description of this interview in the companion "How women are centered and silenced in the major media" on Wikiversity. Regan and Chesko break down what might be the most sexist article ever written, a New York Post hit piece on Greta Thunberg with a misleading headline implying she's caught up in a Freedom Flotilla sex scandal she has nothing to do with. The article mocks her “short stint” in Israeli prison after being kidnapped, calls her the “Swedish queen of sanctimony,” fixates on her “angry” face, and reduces her entire career to one “how dare you” moment. From there, the conversation widens into the Monica Lewinsky playbook of sacrificing women to protect powerful men, misogyny on the left, and the constant pressure to soften accountability for the sake of coalition-building. SEASON 4 EPISODE 83: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (3:00) SPECIAL COMMENT: Trump has given away his labyrinthine plot to stay in office past 2028 in one social media post and he’s just crazy enough to think it will work. It is in his rant claiming the indictment of a political opponent means "The 2020 Presidential Election Should Be Permanently Wiped From The Books And Be Of No Further Force or Effect…” He is not going to try a new Constitutional Amendment or say the limit is two CONSECUTIVE terms. He's not going another coup (at least not initially). He is going to try to nullify the 2020 Election - and hold that vote again. ANOTHER 2020 Election. In 2028. If you think that's too crazy easy for him - is it crazier than Trump insisting yesterday that we are in a war against UKRAINE? Crazier than indicting the former FBI Director on a threat to kill Trump with a seashell meme? Crazier than trying to get a comedian fired for a joke about Trump’s death and his wife when TRUMP then goes out and makes a joke about his death and his wife and all America is talking about is the dreaded D-word? Crazier than indicting a man for trying to shoot him at the Correspondents’ Dinner when it is now unmistakably clear that the suspect never fired a shot and was never on the same floor as Trump was? Crazier than Trump's insistence that we should pay for this damn ballroom because it'll protect presidents? What - are they sealing themselves in like Saddam Hussein in his Hidey Hole? And then I'll detail Trump’s bid to MATA: Make America 2020 Again. B-Block (36:00) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Two competing Bari Weiss entries because while nobody's watching her version of the CBS Evening News, everybody seems to have seen her prized reporter Olivia Reingold making a fool of herself on video from the Correspondents' Dinner. And speaking of that, Stephen A. Smith came out of that experience knowing who is to blame for all America's problems: those evil liberals! Whose presidential nomination he expects to win. ESPN has a choice: platform a political idiot and Conservative tool and destroy your franchise, or get rid of him and keep it. C-Block (55:00) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: I often wonder WHY I ever became a political commentator. It wasn't planned and it wasn't supposed to be permanent. And the story of HOW I became a political commentator is even crazier.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this solo episode of V the People, Veronica Bocian unpacks a week of culture, conversation, and contradictions. From Lena Dunham's re-emergence and Monica Lewinsky's long-overdue comeback to the latest Summer House chaos, Veronica explores how public narratives are shaped—and reshaped—over time. She reflects on the stark differences in how women and powerful men are treated in the spotlight, and why certain stories hit differently now. She also introduces her Lesbian Culture Moment, diving into the assumptions people still make about roles in same-sex relationships, and why those boxes don't hold up. In Politics, But Make It Make Sense, she breaks down a tense exchange between Donald Trump and journalist Norah O'Donnell, translating what's really happening when accountability is met with deflection. Plus, a look at Netflix's Untold: The Shooting at Hawthorne Hill raises difficult questions about bias, mental health, and accountability—and in Something We Don't Talk About Enough, Veronica gets honest about the TikTok body comparison spiral and the gap between how we see ourselves and others. It's a thoughtful, candid episode about perception, power, and learning to question what we think we know.

We just went with it and assumed you understood that we were jumping right to "Cloud Atlas." This fortnight, we read: "Homebound," by Portia Elan "Villain," by Natalie Zina Walschots  "Last Night in Brooklyn," by Xochitl Gonzales "Dear Monica Lewinsky," by Julia Langbein What sound effects did we give each of these books? Hawk, a retired 28-year trial attorney, walks through the CNN article and the New York Times report revealing that the Manhattan District Attorney has opened a criminal investigation into Swalwell, calling on additional victims to come forward. The pattern of conduct alleged, targeting young women who worked for him, volunteered for him, or simply admired him politically, points to a serial abuse of power. Swalwell has denied all allegations, called them false, and has had his attorneys send cease and desist letters threatening defamation suits against two of his accusers. Hawk addresses the legal standard for defamation and why those letters may say more about intimidation than innocence. Also addressed: the troubling response from a vocal segment of liberal women on social media who are publicly refusing to believe the accusers, drawing a direct parallel to the defense of Bill Clinton during the Monica Lewinsky scandal. With corroborating evidence, witness testimony, and a Manhattan DA investigation now underway, Hawk argues Swalwell must drop out of the governor's race and resign his House seat. ***Apologies for the lack of voice. Robin is sick and has lost itThis week we're taking a detour from the usual political hellscape to cover something that is, underneath the celebrity packaging, the exact same story: who gets protected, who gets discarded, and how the machine that hands powerful men unlimited second acts is the same machine running everything else we cover on this show.Shia LaBeouf is thirty-nine years old and currently facing three counts of simple battery in New Orleans, including allegedly punching a bartender, dislocating someone's nose, and headbutting a third person while shirtless during a four-day Mardi Gras bar crawl. His attorney's defense was "frankly, being drunk on Mardi Gras is not a crime." That's the legal strategy.Simultaneously, FKA Twigs (the Grammy-nominated artist Tahliah Barnett) has filed a new lawsuit arguing that the NDA inside her 2025 sexual battery settlement with LaBeouf is illegal under California's STAND Act, and that after she said publicly she didn't feel safe, LaBeouf secretly filed arbitration proceedings to extract money from her for saying it. She hired Mathew Rosengart (the attorney who freed Britney Spears) and she is not seeking money. She is seeking the legal right to describe her own life. This episode: the full legal timeline from 2005 to 2026, the Mia Goth relationship from the 2012 set of Nymphomaniac to the 2024 Pasadena 911 call, to the method acting culture that celebrates self-harm and calls it genius, the Honey Boy credit, the Catholic conversion with full ambivalence, and the redemption arc as a structure that serves perpetrators more reliably than survivors.Plus: why this episode exists, and why the same system protecting Shia LaBeouf is the same one that fired Megan Fox for comparing Michael Bay to Hitler, buried Tig Notaro for being right about Louis C.K. too early, and made Monica Lewinsky the punchline of a generation while the president who was actually in the room got two hundred thousand dollars a speech.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/we-saw-the-devil-crime-political-analysis--4433638/support.Website: http://www.wesawthedevil.comPatreon: http://www.patreon.com/wesawthedevilDiscord: https://discord.gg/X2qYXdB4Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/WeSawtheDevilInstagram: http://www.instagram.com/wesawthedevilpodcast.

Hillary Clinton recently testified behind closed doors before the Republican-led House Oversight Committee, chaired by James Comer, about her knowledge of and connections to Jeffrey Epstein. Her testimony took place at her home in Chappaqua, New York. Clinton stated under oath that she had never met, encountered, or interacted with Jeffrey Epstein — a claim Hawk examines against the documented record showing Epstein visited the Clinton White House 17 times over eight years, and that Epstein provided the first $500,000 in seed money that launched the Clinton Global Initiative. The House Republicans who subpoenaed the Clintons did so even as Donald Trump's name appears in the Epstein files more than one million times — a fact Hawk points out with some emphasis. The conversation shifts to 1998 and the Bill Clinton-Monica Lewinsky scandal — a scandal still named after the 21-year-old unpaid intern rather than the sitting president who used the power of his office. Hawk highlights that the most prominent white feminists of that era, including Gloria Steinem, chose to defend Bill Clinton rather than stand with Monica Lewinsky — drawing a direct parallel to figures like Pam Bondi and Ghislaine Maxwell as enablers who protect powerful men at the expense of women. The testimony also reportedly included Republican questions about Pizzagate, raising questions about the seriousness and intent of the committee's line of inquiry. SEASON 4 EPISODE 55: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (2:30) SPECIAL COMMENT: So would you like to collapse the Trump Regime? Today? Peacefully? Legally? You - the White House press corps. It only takes one of you. You go into the next Oval Office Scrum, and you ask him politely for his explanation of something released by his administration, by Pam Bondi’s office, on the government website, and you read – quoting this FBI 302 interview file: “Maxwell presented (her) to Trump…by the things Maxwell said, it was clear that (she) was available…”And don’t stop reading and don’t make eye contact. THEN from the sworn affidavit, reed, quote: “I personally witnessed Defendant Trump telling the plaintiff that she couldn’t ever say anything, if she didn’t want to disappear like the 12-year old female (redacted) and that he was capable of having her whole family killed…” Quote: “the physical and sexual abuse that I personally witnessed of minor females at the hands of Mr. Trump and Mr. Epstein... under penalty of perjury even though I fully understand that the life of myself and my family is now in grave danger” unquote, what SIR is your explanation SIR about when you threatened this girl’s life, sir. Just keep asking. Don't make eye contact, don't stop, don't stop talking when he starts talking. Just reel off those quotes. And the one about becoming fertilizer. And the "Calendar Girls" story (as nonsensical as that probably is). And all the others. Because we don't always see the escape hatch when it appears before us, and it just appeared. Because the Epstein Files are part of an official Department of Justice Document Dump. Their contents are Pam Bondi's problem, not you or your lawyer's. And if you don't bear down and do this job as it was designed by the Founding Fathers, you will sooner or later face one of these outcomes: you'll be arrested, you'll be replaced by some automaton Bari Weiss likes, or the country will survive and the next people running media will never consider you for work because you were cowardly when we needed your courage. Oh and you can peacefully, legally end the careers of Elon Musk and Marco Rubio and Bari Weiss and lots of others. The material is all in front of you. Just have the courage to pick it up and fling it, like he'd fling his poo at you. ALSO: Don Lemon was arrested not because Jesus but because Trump has always hated him. And if you've forgotten, I explained two weeks ago why Trump was trying to restart the 2020 crap, now sending Tulsi Gabbard to Georgia. They're sitting up not a claim that the election was fixed, but that the election was fixed by another country (hey, Nicolas Maduro, you mind taking the rap, in exchange for a pardon?) and there is no statute of limitations on THAT. B-Block (34:55) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Harriet Hageman, the blob they elected to the House from Wyoming to replace Liz Cheney, is now running for Senate. Emphasize "running": she has fled a town hill. The Bill Maher Pretzel Logic: Celebrities should shut up, voters don't listen to TV and movie stars. But Bill, you expect them to listen to you. So you're saying you're not a star? And the latest Bari Weiss firing target is supposedly Face The Nation host Margaret Brennan and one of the names being thrown around (probably nonsensically) is Matt Lauer. C-Block (54:00) MONDAYS WITH THURBER: We need a doubleheader. I heard an audio book with a famous actor doing Thurber's tribute to what would be called Dunning-Kruger Syndrome: "The Macbeth Murder Mystery" and it was one of those rare times when I actually said "No - I did this better." So I bring it to you, and as a bonus, a second great unheralded Thurber story: "Meet Birdey Doggett." Enjoy them at your leisure.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This episode contains description of addiction, eating disorders and discussion of suicide. Our guest today is the pioneering comedian, actor and activist Margaret Cho. She began performing comedy as a teenager, opening for Jerry Seinfeld at just 14, before becoming one of the most influential stand-ups of her generation. Now in her 50s, Margaret reflects in this episode on the cancellation of her groundbreaking sitcom, All-American Girl, and the surreal "miscalculations" of a network that hired consultants to ensure she was "doing Asian right". She speaks candidly about the "mind f***" of being told she was "too fat to play herself", which triggered a dangerous spiral into disordered eating, 90s diet drugs and eventual kidney failure. She opens up about a suicidal near-death experience that she was initially too afraid to admit even to herself - and about the intervention by friends that finally led her to sobriety. This conversation explores shame, rage and the life-saving importance of humour. Because, as Margaret says, sometimes laughter can be the thing that keeps you breathing. ✨ IN THIS EPISODE: 00:00 Introduction 04:37 Childhood Reflections 06:59 Political and Social Commentary 10:43 The Sitcom Experience 18:35 Body Image and Health Struggles 26:13 Legacy and Influence 26:54 The Struggle with Diet Culture 28:34 Embarrassing Moments on Stage 32:10 Family Influence on Weight Issues 33:22 Seeking Help and Therapy 34:05 Childhood Abuse and Its Impact 37:27 Battling Drug and Alcohol Addiction 43:09 Intervention and Recovery 46:51 Finding Hope and Happiness

We’re now on YouTube every week! Click here to subscribe. On our radar this week… There is a lot on our radar along with Santa's sleigh… The Justice Department is dipping into the National Black Toner Cartridge Strategic Reserve as it redacts tens-of-thousands of pages of the Epstein files. Even so, the scandal continues to grow in a way not seen since the days of Monica Lewinsky. Larry Nassar, the disgraced onetime MSU sports doctor, is now a part of the scandal. A note allegedly from Epstein celebrates their shared perverted interest in vulnerable teenage girls. The FBI says the letter is a fake – and we know that Kash Patel would never tell a lie. The newly released files also show Trump was an Epstein Frequent Flyer … after saying for months he never flew on Lolita Airlines. Attorneys General are increasingly in the political bullseye. Democrats in the U.S. House may be joined by some Republicans to impeach Pam Bondi over the Epstein files debacle, even as Bondi continues to fail in efforts to indict New York AG Leticia James. In Michigan, state House Republicans are mulling over an attempt to impeach Attorney General Dana Nessel, something that would be totally symbolic but make MAGA Republicans feel good. The MAGA movement may need to get some couples therapy after an unhinged verbal brawl at the Turning Point USA weekend conference. We'll be joined later in the podcast by Politico senior Adam Wren who's been covering Turning Point's efforts to be a major political force. The next key political battle in Michigan: a special election for the state Senate. The primary for replacing now-Congresswoman Kristen McDonald Rivet is set for February 3 … a swing district that will determine control of the state Senate for 2026. We'll take a look at the candidates on both sides. CBS News has gone from The Gold Standard for broadcast news to the toilet with Trump-favorable censorship of 60 Minutes. Murrow, Cronkite, Severeid, et. al. are spinning in their graves, and the very much alive Katie Couric calls it a “disgrace.” First it was the Donald Trump Institute for Peace, then the Kennedy Center, Trump Saving Accounts, Trump $1 coins. Now Donald Trump has decided an entire class of battleships will bear his name…and he'll play a role in designing them because, he says, “I'm a very aesthetic person.” Is the world's first gold-plated Navy fleet in our future? And will he continue his years-long business of licensing use of his name on other people's projects? Trump has raised the possibility of awarding himself a $1-billion settlement of the lawsuit he's filed against the government he runs…in effect, judge, jury and beneficiary. Why stop at a billion? Why not a trillion or gazillion? Of course he'll say tariffs will cover the check. We’re joined this week by Adam Wren, a national political correspondent for POLITICO, based in the Midwest. He is a contributor to POLITICO Magazine, Playbook and West Wing Playbook, focusing on Donald Trump's remaking of the federal government and the Democratic response to his return to power ahead of what could be a wide-open 2028 presidential contest. Wren previously served as a national politics features correspondent at Business Insider. He has also written for The New York Times and Washington Post. Originally from Ohio, Adam graduated from Indiana Wesleyan University and has a master's from Northwestern University's prestigious Medill School of Journalism.
