The original ice cream sandwich sold for a penny in 1900 from a pushcart in the Bowery neighborhood of New York. Newspapers never identified the name of the vendor in articles that appeared across the country. However, the ice cream sandwiched between milk biscuits became a hit. Soon, pushcarts popped up around the city and country during the summer months selling the portable treats. Early pictures show beachgoers at Atlantic City getting their ice cream sandwiches for 1¢ each.

Founding Futbol is a year-long exploration of the critical moments that have led to football's emerging popularity in America. Learn more at https://foundingfutbol.com/ In 1972, historic legislation was passed intended to create equity in the American education system. Title IX wasn't about soccer; in fact, it wasn't originally about sports at all. And, yet, it single-handedly gave women more the opportunity to pursue college through sports in ways that simply weren't available before. Soccer, through a combination of factors and then ultimately successes, became one of the primary sports to benefit from Title IX. That spurred growth of female participation in the youth game and also urged the US to ultimately participate internationally as well. Title IX may be one of the biggest contributing factors to how we have now become a soccer nation. Sports historian Victoria Jackson is our guest. She is a professor at Arizona State University who writes and speaks about the intersection of sport and society, exploring how the games we play (and watch) tell us much about the communities – local, national, and global – in which we live. Her writing has appeared in the Los Angeles Times, Washington Post, Boston Globe, The Chronicle of Higher Education, Slate, Letras Libres (Mexico), El Universal (Mexico), Epoca (Brazil), The Independent (UK),The Athletic, and Sportico. Jackson has appeared on 60 Minutes to discuss American college sports and is a frequent podcast, radio, TV, and documentary film commentator on sport and society. The latest in anti-woke cinema is the Christmas comedy JINGLE SMELLS by director Daniel Lusko. This holiday tale of an Iraq war veteran turned garbageman turned “Robin Hood” stars a pantheon of Christian and conservative media personalities including John Schneider (recently in the news for nearly winning The Masked Singer and then vaguely threatening President Joe Biden on social media), the prolific legend Eric Roberts, SNL alumni Victoria Jackson and Jim Breuer, Trump-affiliated lawyer Jay Sekulow, Fox News powerhouse Sean Hannity, and newcomer Ben Davies. When handsome yet unmotivated veteran Nick Gutman (Ben Davies) gets a humble waste management job using his cop father's (John Schneider) connections, he accidentally thwarts an evil toy company CEO's (Eric Roberts) plan to cancel a once-great action movie actor by throwing away all of the action figures made in the actor's likeness. Nick Gutman is dubbed “Jingle Smells” by his local media for redistributing the tossed toys to poor kids in the neighborhood — however, in our opinion, JINGLE SMELLS ultimately fails in its mission to create a new Christmas legend by tipping the sacred cows of liberalism. Its comedy is too niche and internet-poisoned to make a splash outside of its small yet well-connected conservative scene. It's a “big trash, small dumpster” situation. Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Robert P. Jones, President and Founder of the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI), to discuss his recent book The Hidden Roots of White Supremacy: and the Path to a Shared American Future. First, Sam and Emma break down what has taken place over the weekend in Israel and Gaza, as well as the enormous pro-Palestine demonstrations that were held across the world, specifically the massive march that took place in Washington D.C. to demand a ceasefire. Then, they're joined by Robert, who discusses his research on something known as the "discovery doctrine", a policy put in place by colonizers in the 15th century to justify expropriating lands of indigenous peoples abroad in the name of Western/European exploration and conquering, and how that doctrine has even been used to this day to justify anti-indigenous Supreme Court rulings and policy as recently as the early 1990's. Robert also delves in 3 different communities in Minnesota, Oklahoma, and Mississippi and draws a through line between them, highlighting how indignities inflicted by white settlers on indigenous peoples and by racist whites later on in history on black people characterized all of them, with the "discovery doctrine", while with slight permutations, defines the interactions across ethnicities in those areas. Jones also makes clear the connection between Christian nationalism and white supremacy, and how much of the colonizing mindset, from the 15th century conquests of explorers like Hernando de Soto up until the expeditions of settlers moving West during the time of "Manifest Destiny" in the late 1800's, are defined by both ideologies. Before he leaves, Robert threads this particular needle to the present day in the time of Speaker Mike Johnson, someone he refers to as "the embodiment of Christian nationalism in a tailored suit." And in the Fun Half, Sam and Emma touch on the terrible polling out of the NYTimes/Siena college, as well as ABCNews/Ipsos, that shows Biden's favorability plummeting and him losing multiple hypothetical swing state matchups with Trump, a showing so bad that even David Axelrod wants Biden to consider stepping aside. Then, they check in on some of the progressive House members appearances on the weekend shows, where Reps. Pramila Jayapal and Jamaal Bowman highlighted the complicity of the Israeli military on the atrocities in Gaza; they also take a look at Israeli historian Avi Shlaim debunking some of the rhetoric surrounding the so-called "divisiveness" of the phrase "from the river to the sea." They also take a look at Sen. Cory Booker trying desperately to stop a pro-ceasefire chant from growing at one of his rallies, to the tune of "We Are Family" by Sister Sledge. They then turn to Norm Finkelstein schooling some moron on Russia Today who accuses him of hating Jews (Finkelstein is the son of Holocaust survivors), then get to the most important thing on today's schedule: The premiere of the trailer for "Jingle Smells" the new Sean Hannity-produced Christmas movie starring former SNL luminaries Jim Breuer and Victoria Jackson.
