Like a flying squirrel, their large flat fins span their entire bodies, giving the appearance of a flying saucer, and they use these adaptations to cling to the surface of rocks in fast flowing streams. In Germany, these loaches are called “flossensaugers” which translates to “Lizardfish”. Despite its name, no hillstream loaches are lizards, nor do they reside on hills at all because surely they'd dry out and die. And we wouldn't want that for our flat little friends. Cheers to you, hillstream loach and may you cling to life as you do so well to rocks. Thanks for listening to Gettin' Fishy With It! Welp. That happened. Former President Donald Trump declared victory in the presidential race in the early hours of Wednesday morning. As of 3 am Wednesday, The Associated Press had not officially called the race, but it had declared Trump the winner of three crucial swing states: North Carolina, Georgia and Pennsylvania, effectively cutting off any path to victory for Vice President Kamala Harris. Democrats did see a few wins down ballot. Polls have shown that former President Donald Trump is increasingly weak when it comes to support from women. Recent Wall Street Journal polling found that Vice President Kamala Harris has a 13 point lead over Trump among women. In an attempt to reverse those trends, Trump went on Fox News to speak to a crowd of all women where he called himself the “father of IVF.” Erin Ryan, host of Crooked's Hysteria and the weekend edition of What A Day, joins us to debrief. And in headlines: Democratic Representative Colin Allred dragged Republican Senator Ted Cruz during the Texas Senate race debate, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky presented his “Victory Plan” to his country's Parliament, and an abortion rights group in Florida sued the state after Governor Ron DeSantis' administration ordered TV stations to stop airing their pro-abortion ad.Show Notes:Check out Hysteria – https://crooked.com/podcast-series/hysteria/Subscribe to the What A Day Newsletter – https://tinyurl.com/3kk4nyz8What A Day – YouTube – https://www.youtube.com/@whatadaypodcastFollow us on Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/crookedmedia/For a transcript of this episode, please visit crooked.com/whataday

But in good news, New York's WNBA team has made it to the league's semifinals! While 2024 has been a banner year for the WNBA, players have also had to deal with a torrent of racist invective and general culture war nonsense all season long. Since “Fight Club” hit theaters in 1999, the movie has become both a cinematic cult classic and a building block of how people (mostly men) express themselves online. Film critic Emily St. James and Crooked's Erin Ryan join Offline Movie Club to talk about whether David Fincher's opus deserves its top tier rankings, how the movie has been misappropriated by disillusioned Gen Xers and online chauvinists alike, and whether there are any feminist messages to be found. In essence, it's Edward Norton playing a bored shitposter with Brad Pitt as his edgelord sock puppet account—what's not to love? For a closed-captioned version of this episode, click here. Has there ever been a more dramatic Twitter thread than A'Ziah King's 2015 saga about a roadtrip turned kidnapping? Erin Ryan and Josie Duffy Rice join Max to discuss “Zola,” the movie adaptation of those tweets. The film tells the (mostly true) story of a young stripper getting whisked away to Florida by a new acquaintance and her pimp. Its searing commentary on sex trafficking is studded with notification sounds and social media soliloquies, to both sinister and comedic effect. Are Florida roadtrips ever a good idea? What are the hallmarks of toxic white girls? And how much of the original post was really true? Listen to this week's Offline Movie Club to find out.
Jon Lovett and Erin Ryan join Max to discuss how “The Truman Show,” predicted our current era of continuous surveillance and content mining. The movie may be from 1998, but its insights are just as applicable 25 years later—from cults of celebrity, to Fox News, to Instagram. Is Ed Harris' dome over Burbank a cautionary tale about fascist governance? Do we all hide parts of personalities, depending on context? Why was Jon Lovett freaked out by the Hunger Games premiere? Elon Musk hosted Donald Trump for a two and a half hour ramble on Twitter's garbage live streaming platform—and if you think SpaceX flubs launches…well, they've got nothing on X Spaces. Max sits down with Hysteria's Erin Ryan to recap the most head-smacking parts of the conversation, and ask the question of our generation: if Elon doesn't call it X, why should we? After that, Katie Paul, director of the Tech Transparency Project, joins the show to talk about J.D. Vance's ties to a small but powerful faction of tech elites in Silicon Valley. Vance's personal investments in Rumble, the favored social media of racist militias, expose his true tech agenda of enriching his friends and himself at the expense of the rest of us. Mifepristone revolutionized abortion access in America, so much that, two years after the fall of Roe v. Wade, abortions in the United States are up.But now “Mife” is taking its turn in the crosshairs of the anti-abortion movement, facing a challenge before the Supreme Court that could cut off access to the drug. Can it survive this challenge? And, if so, would that mean the pro-choice movement is quietly winning the fight for abortion access in America? This week on “How We Got Here,” Hysteria's Erin Ryan and Offline's Max Fisher tell the story of how Mifepristone became the anti-abortion movement's #1 enemy and the new lows that movement has had to go to get this challenge before the court.
Republicans are coming after IVF? And no-fault divorce? This week, a Supreme Court ruling in Alabama and a new report from POLITICO unmasked an ascendant ideology taking over the Republican Party: Christian nationalism. Why does this ideology have Republicans waging war on public schools, failing marriages, and fertility clinics? And how did this movement go from the far fringes of the religious right to the center of the GOP? This week on How We Got Here, Offline's Max Fisher and Hysteria's Erin Ryan break down Christian nationalism's origin as a reaction to school desegregation, how the ideology is spreading via “trad wife” TikTok trends, and why Donald Trump is embracing the ideology as part of his 2024 presidential campaign.
What do the 1970s crime wave, the endangerment of the California condor, and Gen Xers demanding to speak to the manager have in common? There's a compelling case that all are exacerbated by lead exposure. This week How We Got Here unpacks the long and sordid story of how lead found its way into gasoline…and the organs of many Americans. But gas is just the tip of the iceberg—we still see lead in consumer products today, from drinking water to baby food to Stanley Cups. Why do we still use this poisonous metal? What does it do to our brains? And who does it impact the most? Hysteria's Erin Ryan and Offline's Max Fisher unpack what lead us to this point.
It's Week 2 of What a Day's new series “How We Got Here,” in which Hysteria's Erin Ryan and Offline's Max Fisher pose a question about the week's biggest headlines and comb through history to answer it. This week, they dive into the enemies-to-lovers story of the NFL and sports betting. Why did professional sports leagues disavow gambling for so long? How did the NFL go from hating Vegas to hosting a Super Bowl there? And who cares what color gatorade they dump on the field this Sunday? (Spoiler alert: MANY people!)
Welcome to What a Day's How We Got Here, a new weekend series where Hysteria's Erin Ryan and Offline's Max Fisher pose a question about the week's biggest headlines and comb through history to answer it. This week: why does it feel like the souther border is always in crisis? How does immigration enforcement distort our view of what's actually happening?
