Amanda Jones has had quite a career, as evident in this really insightful conversation about her journey as a film and television composer. One of her latest projects, Number One on the Call Sheet, is a prolific, eye-opening two-part Apple TV+ documentary featuring candid conversations with some of the entertainment industry's biggest stars, like Angela Bassett, Halle Berry, Jamie Foxx, Idris Elba, Whoopi Goldberg, Viola Davis, Denzel Washington and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, to name just a few.Amanda's career includes BET's Twenties from Lena Waithe, OWN's Cherish the Day, produced by Ava DuVernay and A Black Lady Sketch Show, produced by Robin Thede and Issa Rae. We learn about the empowerment she received from this powerful group of Black women so early in her journey.Amanda earned her first Emmy nomination for Home, an Apple TV+ series and became the first Black woman nominated for an Outstanding Music Composition for a Documentary Series or Special (Original Dramatic Score) Emmy. Later, Amanda was awarded a Daytime Emmy Award for Home. The idea of following one's passion resonates heavily throughout this conversation. Amanda shares that her love of sounds, more specifically music, started around the age of 3. After graduating from Vassar College and later, studying film scoring and orchestration at Berklee College of Music, she landed an internship with Hans Zimmer and it was an opportunity at Lionsgate that helped give her a more 360-degree sense of the business side of things.Other takeaways from this multifaceted chat hone in on creating a sonic language for films and TV, the importance of asking questions, communication and collaboration during the creative process, having a strong creative voice, knowing when to delegate as well as fighting off stigmas reserved for women of color and mothers.A co-founder of Composers Diversity Collective, Amanda's other credits include Somebody Somewhere, Good Trouble, Naomi, Young Love, 7 Days, Dreamland: The Rise and Fall of Black Wall Street, Definition Please, Moving On, The Perfect Find, Mea Culpa, Jodie and the new Apple TV+ series, Murderbot.
In a special Emmy-themed roundtable, Franklin and Kate welcome three powerhouse creators—Billy Porter (Pose), Robin Thede (A Black Lady Sketch Show), and Ramy Youssef (Ramy)—for an unfiltered, deeply personal conversation recorded just ahead of the 72nd Annual Emmy Awards. This episode breaks the usual format to let the magic of the moment unfold. The trio dives into what it means to bring their full selves to the screen, the evolving responsibility of the artist, and the lessons they'd share with their younger selves. (As Billy memorably puts it: “A b*tch has to have boundaries!”)It's raw, real, and refreshingly honest—touching on identity, representation, and the complexity behind creating truly authentic work. As Kate says, “We just got out of the way and let it flow.” And flow it does.Questions? Comments? Criticism? Hit us up on social media at @theblcklst.This conversation took place in 2020. Introduction: Minutes 0 to 2:00 We'll be off for the next two weeks and will be back on December 3rd. We talk about our Thanksgiving plans. Royals: Minutes 2:00 to 26:30 Chandra is five episodes in to The Crown. She wrote about Mou Mou, the fourth episode that goes into Mohamed Al-Fayed's backstory and connection to the royals. It's fascinating that Peter Morgan dedicated an episode to introducing the Al-Fayed family. The royals, with the exception of Diana, treated Mohamed terribly. This week, when Prince Charles and Camilla were visiting York, a 23-year-old man in the crowd threw eggs at them and missed. He also shouted “this country was built on the blood of slaves!” Camilla and Charles were taken away but everyone seemed unbothered and the security seemed lax. The man has been charged with a “public order offense.” There are photos of Charles earlier in the week talking to people while viewing eggs for some reason. Princess Kate went alone to her patronage the Rugby World Cup, and she visited the Colham Manor Children's Centre outside London where she spoke to staff about maternal mental health. We also heard that she's going to do a second Christmas Carol concert with ITV. We talk about all the junk we order online. Mike Tindall is on the reality show I'm a Celebrity Get me Out of Here. Sources told the press that Tindall did not clear it with King Charles ahead of time. Chandra doesn't think he should have to since he's not a working royal. Meghan's podcast examined The B Word as she calls it. She won't say the word bitch and we obviously can't relate. We love that she interviewed Robin Thede. We also got a photo of her with an “I Voted” sticker. We want Archewell merchandise. There was a story in Christopher Andersen's new book, The King: The Life of Charles III, claiming that Charles told a friend he didn't know Meghan was biracial when he first met her. I play a segment from Zoom where we talk about the royals. Chandra loves Olivia Williams as Camilla on The Crown. The actress playing Princess Anne, Claudia Harrison, is also very good. Dominic West has been giving interviews half praising and half shading King Charles. Elon Musk and Twitter: Minutes 26:30 to 30 Last week we talked about Elon Musk buying Twitter after he borrowed money and was leveraged to the hilt. This week he fired thousands of Twitter employees and a bunch of them are suing him in a class action suit for breaking employment law. He also endorsed a Republican Congress and he tweeted a meme featuring a Nazi soldier. Former twitter executives are saying he has no clue what he's doing and he's been sh-tposting constantly. He also implemented an extra checkmark, an “official” checkmark, that only lasted a few hours. Elon Musk is tanking Twitter. Comments of the Week: Minutes 30:00 to end Chandra's Comment of the Week is from BayTampaBay on the post about Penelope Knatchbull and Prince Philip's relationship. My COTW is from Abicci on the post about Rihanna's Savage x Fenty Show. Thanks for listening bitches!
In this dynamic episode, Meghan explores the origin and plague of “the B word” and its cousin “difficult” and how these terms are often wrongly applied to a strong minded woman, especially in business. In deep and meaningful conversations with trailblazers Mellody Hobson and Victoria Jackson, Meghan investigates the language used to gaslight women as they grow their careers as entrepreneurs and on the corporate ladder. Creator and writer, Robin Thede, also joins Meghan, along with author Allison Yarrow, and zoologist and author Lucy Cooke.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Robin Thede makes it look easy. And as with most great comedians, that sense of effortlessness stems from decades of discipline, setbacks, and perseverance. “My [training] was just being a student of all the different types [of comedy], and learning and being fascinated by, like: Holy shit, how do they come up with those jokes?” she says. “A lot of people think you're just funny in your head, and then it comes out. No. These people work so hard to craft these jokes, and they work them over and over and over.” On this episode of In the Envelope: The Actor's Podcast, Thede walks us through the comedy odyssey that led her to creating and starring on HBO's groundbreaking “A Black Lady Sketch Show,” which garnered five 2022 Emmy nominations for its third season.
