From it's early days in the 1920's news was an important part of radio. The first newscasts were little more than announcers reading press releases and police reports. In the 1930s and 40s, network newscasts evolved into audio versions of newspaper columns. During the World War Two and into the 1950s there was the arrival of the radio news anchor, who presented reporters on the scene, with commentary confined to the people actually making the news. You're hear this transition develop over decades of radio news coverage. Elmer Davis on CBS Radio in 1939 HV Kaltenborn on NBC Radio in 1940 Walter Winchell in 1941, American Radio's most popular newsman at the time, and was heard on the Blue Network, which later became ABC. Fulton Lewis Jr on the Mutual Radio Network in 1942. Raymond Gram Swing on ABC Radio in 1945 Mutual Newsreel Digest in 1950 Taylor Grant suffers the news anchor's nightmare on ABC in 1953. The legendary Edward R. Murrow on CBS Radio in 1957. Frank Bourgholtzer on NBC Radio in 1961. Charles Osgood before he became famous in 1966 on ABC Radio Bill Maher Jr, father of the famous comedian on Mutual Radio in 1969. Mike Stanley on CBS in 1969. James Limbach on Associated Press Radio in 1977. Al Williams on the Mutual Black Radio Network in 1978. David Leslie on ABC in 1978. Pat Prescott on the National Black Network in 1981. Becky Bailey on Mutual in 1988. Jim Lounsbury on the United Press International radio network in 1989. Sheri Preston on ABC radio in 2004. More at KRobCollection.com
Here we are, back at Bill Pogue's. It's after 11PM. What do we know? Well, there are less people drinking here than last night, most would rather stay in and listen for updates. On the air over CBS right now is Joan Brooks. Me? I'm just trying to have that nightcap I started yesterday. There are still news bulletins coming out of Europe. It's almost dawn there. The men will be continuing their missions with D-Day: Plus 1 So far, we know that at least four-thousand Allied soldiers have been killed in the initial attack, but the German forces on the Normandy peninsula have either been killed, captured or forced to withdraw to Caen. I'm sure as we speak troops and equipment are being ferried across the Channel. I know the hope is that by the end of June we'll have nearly a million men in western Europe as we advance north from Italy simultaneously. With the Russians pushing Germany west it's only a matter of time, but the Germans won't go down without a fight. But, I know American resolve. We'll be up for the task, no matter how long it takes. It's why next month on Breaking Walls we'll move just a few weeks into the future and focus on Independence Day, 1944. —————————— The reading material used in today's episode was: • Radio Speakers--A Biographical Dictionary — By Jim Cox • On The Air — By John Dunning • Network Radio Ratings — By Jim Ramsburg As well as articles from • Broadcasting Magazine • CBSNews.com • GlobalNews.ca • LIFE Magazine • Military-History.org • The New York Times • The New York Daily News • Presidency.UCSB.edu • RadioArchives.com • Radio Daily —————————— On the interview front: • André Baruch, Mel Blanc, Ken Carpenter, Norman Corwin, Alice Frost, Barbara Luddy, Bret Morrison, Ken Roberts, Kate Smith, and Olan Soule spoke with Chuck Schaden. Charles Osgood Wood III , was the given name of a television icon, we all knew simply as Charles Osgood. He was the host of the CBS News "Sunday Morning" broadcast for 22 years but long before that he was the voice for the Osgood File on CBS Radio. It was that voice that made him instantly recognizable to almost everyone in America. He stood out in the media landscape for his understatement and his genuine kind nature. He was a poet, a musician, and an extraordinary storyteller. He seemed to have always been around. It was that understatement that made you feel like you were listening to a kindly relative who had always been there and that perhaps you did not really appreciate like you should have until you realized he was not there any longer. I think we have all missed Charles Osgood since the day he retired in 2017. I know I have missed him. In a world that seems to be half crazy all the time, I enjoyed his simple uplifting stories and his amazingly insightful poetry early on each Sunday morning. His famous two minute commentaries, "The Osgood Files", were always insightful and thought provoking and his poems were exactly perfect for the moment you had tuned in for on those Sunday Mornings. So , in this episode, we look back on his amazing life and career, with tributes from his friends and his journalistic colleagues, we here wisdom from him in his interviews and speeches, and we found a good cross section of his many commentaries known as "The Osgood File" , we hope it is a fitting tribute to the CBS Newsman known as the networks poet in residence, and we will even listen in for a song or too. Charles Osgood was 91, and we can honestly say of this icon of television news, "We were glad to know you" and as we bid farewell we will simply say Godspeed, Mr. Osgood, We will see you on the radio, until we meet again. Hey there! Today, on my show, the Miracle Commute Podcast, I talked about something that I feel is incredibly important: embracing change in life. I discussed how viewing change as an opportunity for personal growth and self-discovery can really help us thrive. I shared some powerful quotes from motivational speaker Jack Canfield and the late CBS Radio icon, Charles Osgood, who was actually the inspiration for the episode. I talked about how he lived a successful and fulfilling life by embracing change, and how we can do the same. I also reminded my listeners of the ever-evolving nature of life and how we can grow with change. Change can be scary, but it can also be exciting and bring new opportunities into our lives. SERIES 2 EPISODE 111: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: Trump has never been truer to himself than after his solid but unspectacular victory over Nikki Haley in New Hampshire last night. His toadies like Marjorie Taylor Greene were whining within 10 minutes of the closing of the polls that the tally had been rigged against him. And he overshadowed his own victory by getting up and sweating through an angry, petty, vindictive "victory" speech in which he once again resorted to stochastic threats against Haley, this time promising he could reveal enough about her to get her investigated by "them." President Biden, meanwhile, won a non-primary primary in which he wasn't even on the Beauty Pageant Ballot, and he still got about 67% of the votes. And new polling in Pennsylvania - showing him up +8 over Trump there - was probably yesterday's REAL biggest presidential race story. Meanwhile it's Day 9 of Trump's Dementia Crisis. Not only are other Republicans noticing he's making less sense and seeming less present every day, but Trump is now blithering his way through teleprompter speeches and making sound effects on camera - all of which can be neatly folded into Biden Campaign Commercials. And while Jamie Combover's impeachment theater may be coming to the end of its run, there's a sudden revival of the Matt Gaetz Ethics Investigation in Congress. Plus why the President needs to federalize the Texas National Guard and arrest Governor Greg Abbott - today. B-Block (21:00) IN SPORTS: Baseball's Hall of Fame elects new members - one too few, or two too many? Beltre was a lock but I have deep doubts about Helton and Mauer. And look out, another MLB team will be forced to wear those horrific City Connect Uniforms. (25:57) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: How do the Oscars folks do this every year? You nominate Ken but not Barbie? You nominate Barbie for best picture but not its director? This is a tradition that dates back to "How Green Was My Valley" winning best picture in 1941 instead of say, Citizen Kane or The Maltese Falcon. One weird trick that connects Lenin and Benny Hill. And farewell to the greatest radio newscaster of all-time, Charles Osgood. (35:15) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Eric Adams plays Musical Chairs with actual chairs. Oklahoma's immoral School Superintendent gives a job to the immoral LibsOfTikTok witch. And Tiffany Cross finally breaks her silence on who knifed her in the back at MSNBC. The answer? Joey Scars himself. Joe Scarborough. C-BLOCK (43:40) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: Since we're already in Trash-MSNBC-Mode, let me tell you again of the story of how Lawrence O'Donnell, kindly filling in for me in 2010 while my Dad was dying, used the opportunity to try to get me fired, or try to get all my producers to leave with him for his new show. Scarborough is always the worst - but O'Donnell is close.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Hamad is a Qatari comedian who grew up in Ireland, a rare commodity in the Middle East or anywhere else. Having spent time in Qatar, Southern Ireland and the US he's had a unique opportunity to experience the diversity in cultures, which helped form his identity and approach to comedy. With a broad repertoire, his experience ranges from stand-up comedy (his life's passion and deepest love!), to being a keen ambassador for children's charities, cancer awareness and local franchises, VIP corporate events and conferences, and producing online shows. Despite the humor, Hamad is quite an intense character with a very serious side, and has a strong desire to teach, help, assist and educate, all common themes in his social commentary. Obviously not a run of the mill kid, he believes in freedom of speech, saying it as it is, and spreading ones wings. Known internationally for hitting a Burger King drive-through on a camel no less, Hamad likes to break down barriers and boundaries. Where's the humor in staying confined?! On this episode, Hamad shares his one way ticket to a complete symbiotic relationship between man and technology. He also highlights what people should know about Qatar, the breathtaking Qatar National Museum, the 2022 World Cup, if there's such a thing as Qatari humor, and more. Michael Fabiano is a distinguished international opera singer. As a tenor, he regularly performs at leading opera houses worldwide. His musical artistry is matched by his passionate commitment to arts education. Michael is the Co-Founder & Executive Director of ArtSmart - a non-profit that transforms the lives of youth in under-resourced communities across the US through tuition-free music lessons and mentorship by paid, professional artists. Additionally, as an entrepreneur, Michael is a partner in Resonance, an operating system for creative organizations and businesses that streamlines everything from payroll to spreadsheets and email to employee communication. He is an active private pilot, a life-long baseball umpire, and writes extensively in blogs and articles about the American educative experience.
