What if the biggest obstacle to delivering a world-class customer experience isn't your technology or your strategy, but the very way your teams are structured and enabled to work?Agility requires creating an internal environment that can fluidly adapt to—and even anticipate—the needs of the external customer.Today, we're going to talk about: the often-overlooked foundation of successful business transformation: the human experience. It's another doubleheader in episode #735, this time with 2 unrelated '50s classics. First up, I talk about the offbeat John Huston comedy Beat The Devil. The screenplay he wrote with Truman Capote is very quotable, even though its characters and daffy plot parody serious caper flicks like Huston's The Maltese Falcon. Humphrey Bogart has been a regular on Have You Ever Seen over the years, but this is the first episode ever for Jennifer Jones or Gina Lollobrigida. Jenny is quirky, cute and quite a talented liar while Gina is...well, staggeringly gorgeous. Then I veer from the fun of that one to spend about 17 minutes on Lee J. Cobb and Jane Wyatt in The Man Who Cheated Himself. Felix Feist's noir is about a cop who breaks the law to cover for his murdering mistress. Jane Wyatt is yet another classic actress we'd never covered before. So spend this final Monday of April hearing about a loopy comedy and an intense crime flick. Well, Actually: "coupe" IS pronounced "coo-pay" in French AND in what's known as "British English". Also, the other movie that will be reviewed on Friday will in fact be the Gene Autry western South Of The Border. TVC 726.3: Ed welcomes Jennifer Jones, the first African-American member of the world renowned Radio City Rockettes, and an award-winning performer who is celebrated for her pioneering achievements and unwavering advocacy for equal rights in the arts. Jennifer's memoir, Becoming Spectacular: The Rhythm of Resilience from The First African-American Rockette, not only tells the story of how she helped establish a transformative era for The Rockettes while inspiring other black dancers, but also recounts her triumphant battle against colorectal cancer in 2018. March is both Women's History Month and Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. Becoming Spectacular is available wherever books are sold through Amistad Books, an imprint of HarperCollins. Topics this segment include how Jennifer's faith helped her overcome some of the challenges she faced during her early days with the Rockettes; how she knew, from a young age, that she wanted to perform on stage; and how conquering self-doubt is like peeling away layers of an onion. For our listeners in the Greater L.A. Metro area, Jennifer Jones' story is also included in This Joint is Jumpin', a new exhibit at The Hollywood Museum that honors the contributions of many notable black artists, singers, actors, writers, and sports figures, including Whitney Houston, Lena Horne, Denzel Washington, Ella Fitzgerald, The Pointer Sisters, Dionne Warwick, Forrest Whitaker, Wesley Snipes, Eddie Murphy, Richard Pryor, Angela Bassett, Muhammad Ali, Will Smith, Halle Berry, Viola Davis, Diana Ross, and Oprah Winfrey. TVC 726.4: Jennifer Jones, the first African-American member of the Radio City Rockettes, talks to Ed about her battle against colorectal cancer in 2018 (including the importance of having the right medical team for her); how she came to write her children's book, On the Line; how she came to create the Dancing Jenn doll; and how she first dreamed of dancing on stage when she was nine years old, after seeing The Wiz on Broadway. March is both Women's History Month and Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. Both Jennifer's memoir, Becoming Spectacular, and her children's book, On the Line, are available through HarperCollins and Amazon.com, while the Dancing Jenn doll is available through Wal-Mart. For our listeners in the Greater L.A. What's it like when you are the only African American dancer in a world of all white dancers? Lisa continues our very special interview with Jennifer Jones, the first African American Rockette. Jennifer talks about growing up seeing Broadway shows with her parents. She told her high school guidance counselor that she wanted to go to college and major in dance. Her counselor told her that she wasn't ready for college yet, although at a very early age, she always dreamed of being on stage. She was so passionate and started at a local community college before moving to New York City, auditioning, and getting hired to be a Rockette. She talks about how spectacular Radio City Music Hall is. It literally took her breath away! She shares the excitement of the famous Christmas Spectacular show and how she poured her heart into each show. She was performing up to six shows a day. Jennifer discusses resilience, and what she had to break through to make her dreams come true. She noted that this year is the 100-year anniversary of the Rockettes and a big event will be planned to celebrate. She also talks about her challenges, and how important it is to believe in yourself. She discusses the importance of being resilient. When she turned 50, she went to her doctor to request a colonoscopy. The doctor told her she was young and had nothing to worry about as she was healthy and had no family members with colorectal cancer. Jennifer listened to her powerful intuition and got a colonoscopy anyway. The doctors determined that she had colorectal cancer, and she was told she had five years to live. She felt embarrassed by this diagnosis as she was always the "healthy one" in her family. She was physically fit and a vegetarian. She met with a specialist and had four rounds of chemotherapy. To the amazement of her doctors, the tests showed dramatic improvement. She explains how she decided to meditate more, let go of toxic relationships, drink green juices, and so much more. She knew she needed to change the way she ate and the way she thought. In 2019, she was deemed cancer-free! Jennifer talks about testing early for colorectal cancer, and especially in the African American community. If there's a history, in your family, it's important to test even earlier. She shares how her symptoms started as pressure in her abdomen, so she began changing her diet and meeting with doctors. My guest broke a long-standing barrier when she became the first African American woman to dance with the world-famous Rockettes at NY's Radio City Music Hall. We discuss her love of dance, the process of being selected to the Rockettes, the reactions she got from others, and much more.
Jennifer is a returning guest on the podcast. I asked her to come back because I read her blog post about the importance of using our own voice and I thought she had made some important points that would be relevant to my listeners too.We talked about: How using AI to generate your content can erode trust with your audience. Other potential downfalls for business owners and freelancers of using AI to generate content./li> Why it's actually difficult to make AI content sound human. The easy way to get your own ideas down in writing. How to prevent yourself from over-editing your own writing and tips for spotting errors. How you can explore and develop your own voice. We also talked about using additional languages to communicate. Specifically, how AI can help you to identify and fix obvious errors, but there's a danger in relying so much on AI for your editing that your voice is lost and the text sounds like everything else that's been written or heavily influenced by AI.Find out more on the show notes page: https://englishwithkirsty.com/podcast/episode302/
Today's very special interview features Jennifer Jones, the first African American Rockette. Jennifer shares her story of growing up seeing Broadway shows with her parents. From a very early age, she dreamed of being on stage. She was so passionate and knew in every cell of her body that that would be her home. Jennifer talks about resilience, and what she had to break through to make her dreams come true. She talks about the dance history of the 1920s and how the Rockettes were formed in 1925. The founder thought that Americans would love to see women of the same size and race perform the exact same moves on a dance line. During this time period, Black dancers had their own troupes, as Blacks and whites did not perform together. Jennifer was hired as a Rockette in 1987. She was the very first Black woman to join the dance line. She saw an ad in the newspaper and her friend encouraged her to audition. She wasn't familiar with the Rockettes, as she'd never seen them. She saw only white women auditioning and realized she was the only Black person. She was so nervous and intimated, she decided to leave. A voice inside of her said, "Stay!" She decided to do so. She auditioned, got measured for height and weight, and the stage manager invited her to come back. Even though she went to the call back, she still didn't realize who the Rockettes were. She didn't know their history. She was hired and they immediately sent her for media training. She met with the choreographer who said she was "misquoted" by the press and that's what Jennifer needed to say during interviews. Many people, from managers to choreographers to fellow dancers, were not happy that she was on the line. Jennifer talks about being assaulted and repeatedly insulted. It took extreme perseverance on her part to follow her dreams of being on stage. She talks about how so many women auditioned and how they were not allowed to be a Rockette simply because of their skin color. Through her perseverance, her dream came true! Her groundbreaking memoir is titled "Becoming Spectacular: The Rhythm of Resilience from the First African American Rockette." She discusses specific mentors who helped to encourage her along the way. She received fan mail, as well as difficult hate mail. Some people didn't feel she should be there, but her parents, family, and mentors helped her along the way. She was a Rockette for 15 years, then another dream came true – she danced on Broadway! She discusses how staunch and strict the "Rockettes" brand is at Radio City. She didn't feel she could speak her truth without repercussions. They are still very strict with the brand. They do allow for slightly varying heights and weights. The draw for so many is that it's an incredible precision troupe. It has evolved over the years. They are trying to include more nationalities. The main focus is still precision and elegance. Jennifer hopes that she helped to inspire the Black women on the line today so they can experience the joy of the sisterhood of being a Rockette, dancing at Radio City Music Hall. This is Part 1 of the interview. Info: rockettejenn.com.

Some years ago, when Jonathan Krane was producing my films and married to the Oscar nominated actress Sally Kellerman - who was Luana Anders closest pal on the planet - my wife and I had a Christmas dinner at Sally and Jonathan's home. Frank Gehry was there - by himself, so my wife and I, both children of architects sat down to have a lively conversation about everything under the sun. So the other day, after Frank passed, I had the "feeling" or awareness that he was willing to join our podcast - mainly because we've interviewed so many pals of his. Frank was in "group therapy" with Sydney Pollack, Sally, Jonathan, Luana - Blake Edwards, Dudley Moore and others... Milton Wexler was the renowned psychotherapist who ran the group, and remained a famous therapist until the end of his life. But because I knew Sally was in the group - I made that the "bell ringer" for myself - if I asked to speak to Frank and Sally showed up ("Hot Lips" in the original MASH) I knew it was him. And that's what happens in the podcast. Frank stops by to talk about his journey - and I was startled to see that his favorite building was the home of Norton Simon - which I didn't know he designed when I went to Sally and Jonathan's wedding at the palatial estate. But there you have it - I don't even know if Jennifer said "Venice" and I heard "Malibu" - I'll have to check the tape, but that's where my mind went. And yes, Jennifer Jones did offer to have our wedding at her home - but we didn't go that path. Funny to remember it now and in this fashion. It's another mind bending podcast and serves as a reminder; they aren't gone; they're just not here. Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas and for folks like Frank who are Jewish; Happy Hannukah!
