Before we can fully embrace the season, Ian and Jam need to turn in some overdue assignments. We finally listened to a few long-languishing requests, and this episode is our essay comparing and contrasting them! "Our Last Christmas" by Thor and "I'm Spending Christmas Alone" by Future Wife both seem like melancholy ruminations on paper, but there's more to interpret than at first glance. Grab your No. 2 pencils and stare wistfully out of a classroom window with us! The ranking music in this episode was "Santa Says Relax" by Joe Innis and the Cavalcade. Thank you to CJ and Charles for these requests, respectively!
With July 4th right around the corner, we've got a quartet of radio mysteries involving great figures and moments of American history. Henry Fonda recreates his role of Young Mr. Lincoln in a radio version of the classic film on Academy Award (originally aired on CBS on July 10, 1946). Honest Abe is a lawyer who must clear his wrongfully accused clients of murder. Lee Bowman plays Allan Pinkterton, one of America's most celebrated detectives, as he investigates a case of robbery and murder in “The Pinkerton Man” from The Cavalcade of America (originally aired on NBC on November 18, 1946). A recently released convict falls in with a gang that forges correspondence from historical figures in “Letters from Aaron Burr” from The Whistler (originally aired on CBS on November 20, 1949). And “the man with the action-packed expense account” hunts for a stolen original copy of the Gettysburg Address. Bob Bailey stars as Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar in “The Meek Memorial Matter” (AFRS rebroadcast from March 3, 1957).
We're tipping our deerstalker cap to Basil Rathbone in celebration of his June 13th birthday. Of course, we'll hear him as Sherlock Holmes in three old time radio adventures from Baker Street - “Murder in the Casbah” (originally aired on Mutual on December 3, 1945), “The Indiscretion of Mr. Edwards” (originally aired on Mutual on February 4, 1946), and “The Adventure of the Uneasy Easy Chair” (originally aired on Mutual on May 13, 1946). Plus, he plays John Adams in his pre-presidential days as a lawyer defending British soldiers involved in the infamous Boston Massacre. We'll hear Rathbone in “John Yankee” from The Cavalcade of America (originally aired on NBC on August 29, 1950).

Today our month-long tribute to Jimmy Stewart on radio continues. "Cavalcade of America," at one time or other, had almost every major star in a title role during its near 20-year run. In this episode Jimmy Stewart taps into his easy, small American, home-town roots, playing a Montana cowboy who enlists in the Navy, but dreams of raising horses. Despite the Navy's lack of equine opportunities, he acquires a sickly colt and names him Montana, nursing him back to health and fighting to keep him. (Episode recorded October 19, 2024)It's been three months since our last episode, but it's been even longer since we recorded this one!In our seventh review of the season, we are exploring the actual winner of the Oscar for Outstanding Production at the Sixth Academy Awards, Frank Lloyd's Cavalcade, based on Noel Coward's play. This smash hit was nominated for four Oscars, and won three. The film covers 30 years, following two British families starting from the Boer War, through several other massive historical events, all the way into the current era of the 1930s. We discuss the film's historical context, character dynamics (or lack thereof), the challenges of censorship and adaptation (the Hays office took special exception to the language in the film), and the themes of love, war, and loss. Oh yeah, and Sara keeps referencing Forrest Gump.As always, we have our history timeline, top song of the day, and an interesting legal follow-up to I am a Fugitive From a Chain Gang. Please leave us a review wherever you are listening!Email us rants as well as raves: sheacinema@gmail.comYou can also find us on Instagram (and now Twitter/X): @sheacinema

We bid goodbye to Lee Bowman with his first and last appearances on Suspense. He co-stars with Walter Hampden and Susan Hayward in "The Dead Sleep Lightly" (originally aired on CBS on March 30, 1943) - the story of a man who places a call to a grave and hears the voice of the dead on the other end of the line. Then, Bowman is a man whose fiancee disappears off the face of the earth - or does she? - in "I Won't Take a Minute" (originally aired on CBS on December 6, 1945). Finally, Bowman plays one of America's most famous detectives in "The Pinkerton Man" from The Cavalcade of America (originally aired on NBC on November 18, 1946).

Our second Diana Wynyard Acteurist Oeuvre-view episode brought two real oddball pre-Codes to our attention: Men Must Fight (1933), a hardcore pacifist film that predicts the upcoming world war in certain ways, in which Wynyard more or less reprises her Cavalcade role; and Reunion in Vienna (1933), based on a Robert E. Sherwood play, which could have been the first screwball comedy if Wynyard and John Barrymore had been playing Americans (but then, the movie's entire premise—the psychosexual allure of authoritarianism—would be removed). We make the probably indefensible case (more like an irresponsible opinion) that the latter handles a naughty love triangle in a more interesting way than Lubitsch's Design For Living from the same year. And in Fear and Moviegoing in Toronto, we watch a 65th anniversary screening of Sleeping Beauty, the most visually radical animated Disney film, and discuss whether it lives up to our childhood memories. Our first Diana Wynyard Acteurist Oeuvre-view presents us with a couple of politically reactionary pre-Codes: Wynyard's Hollywood debut, Rasputin and the Empress (1932), which is mostly Rasputin (a very freaky Lionel Barrymore), not much Empress (Ethel B), and almost no Wynyard; and her Hollywood triumph, Cavalcade (1933), Noël Coward's version of the Modernist recoil from the 20th century. We find much to discuss in these movies' tortured relationship with recent history. Time Codes: 0h 00m 25s: RASPUTIN & THE EMPRESS (1932) [dir. Richard Boleslawski] 0h 29m 03s: CAVALCADE (1933) [dir. Christmas: Tales of the Texas Rangers “Christmas Present” 12/24/50 NBC, Cavalcade of America “Barbed-Wire Christmas” 12/16/52 NBC.
The Cavalcade of America's sponsor, The Du Pont Company, had profited from gunpowder during the first World War. Years of bad press led them to hire the ad agency Batten, Barton, Durstine, and Osborne. They wanted a brand perception change. The Cavalcade of America was the answer. In 1944 The Cavalcade of America was in the midst of a thirteen-year primetime run on NBC. Sponsored by Dupont, the program dramatized history and historical fiction, focusing intensely on the war at home and abroad. On Christmas night at 8PM, Walter Huston emceed a program called “America For Christmas” which took listeners around the country to showcase all the things that made different states in the United States so unique.
Today we are pausing briefly to observe Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. There were a whole lot of shows with great WWII themes, and a few times a year we have a chance to feature one of them. This one is from The Cavalcade of America war years. Normally this series dramatized events from American history or historical figures. But for a while after the US entered the war, they did mostly action-packed stories revolving around the war, designed to boost morale. This is one such show, and it is a beautifully written piece starring the film actor Ralph Bellamy. (And let me tell you, listeners, the audio software we use to edit this/adjust the levels really HATES files this large... but it was worth wrangling them to bring you this GIANT-SIZED special episode!)We've got stand-up Jay Jurden, actor DeWanda Wise (Imaginary in theaters now!), comedian Jason Mantzoukas (How Did This Get Made), Michael Cyril Creighton (Only Murders and American Fiction), writer Ryan Ken (Last Week Tonight with John Oliver), and stand-up Natasha Leggero (Endless Honeymoon), and as always on Couples Therapy, you're getting comedy and real talk all mushed together like a glorious audio Reese's Peanut Butter Cup! We answer questions about dating losers, forgiving your partner, self-worth and so much more! If you'd like to ask your own advice questions, call 323-524-7839 and leave a VM or just DM us on IG or Twitter!Get tix to Naomi's Netflix is a Joke Festival show (masks required!)!
