As Alma mentored his sons in teaching the gospel, he counseled them not only to cultivate qualities such as diligence, temperance, humility, and self-reflection, but to also use “boldness, but not overbearance” (Alma 38:12) as part of their approach. The words boldness, bold, and boldly are used twenty-seven times throughout the Book Mormon, primarily to indicate that a person, or a group of people, have spoken or acted with “courage, daring, fearlessness; confidence, assurance, [and] security” (Oxford English Dictionary Online, OED). On the other hand, overbearance is used only once and seems to mean “to overcome, put down, or repress, as by power, authority, influence, or emotional pressure” (OED). In this episode, Dr. Jan J. Martin, associate professor of ancient scripture, discusses Alma's stylistic teaching advice given to his son Shiblon. She highlights two critical areas of Alma's methodology: the origin of his prophetic and fatherly counsel for teaching the gospel and his practice of leaning into the Holy Ghost for inspiration on what and how to teach. Alma's experiences in Ammonihah provide important instruction for anyone with leadership or teaching responsibilities who desire to be bold but not overbearing. Send us a Text Message. From Come Follow me: "In many ways, life in Ammonihah had been good for both Amulek and Zeezrom. Amulek was “a man of no small reputation,” with “many kindreds and friends” and “much riches” (Alma 10:4). Zeezrom was an expert lawyer who enjoyed “much business” (Alma 10:31). Then Alma arrived with an invitation to repent and “enter into the rest of the Lord” (Alma 13:16). For Amulek, Zeezrom, and others, accepting this invitation required sacrifice and even led to almost unbearable adversity. But of course the story doesn't end there. In Alma 13–16, we learn what ultimately happens to people who believe “in the power of Christ unto salvation” (Alma 15:6). Sometimes there's deliverance, sometimes healing—and sometimes things don't get any easier in life. But always, “the Lord receiveth [His people] up unto himself, in glory” (Alma 14:11). Always, the Lord grants “power, according to [our] faith … in Christ” (Alma 14:28). And always, that faith gives us “hope that [we] shall receive eternal life” (Alma 13:29). As you read these chapters, you can take comfort in these promises, and you may come to understand better what Alma meant when he spoke of entering into “the rest of the Lord” (Alma 13:16)."Support the Show:www.patreon.com/SaintsintheSouth(The thoughts, ideas, and beliefs we express on this channel do not officially represent The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Consider joining us at TSAR.website to get more thoughts on this week's reading, especially Alma 13, which we don't cover very much in this episode. In this episode Kylie Turley and Kerry talk about the horrific story of burning women and children at Ammonihah. The delve into the possibility that Amulek's family was part of the martyrs. They talk about how, either way, this would have affected Amulek, who had brought these people to believe and then watched them suffer for it. They use this to discuss hard things that happen to the best of people, and how we can wonder where God is during those times. They look to the Book of Mormon chapters for answers to those tough questions. This week, Alma will teach us about Melchizedek and his ability to use the power of the Priesthood to change a sin-sick city. Alma's message resonates with some, but others turn violently against the truth. They'll execute women and children in front of Alma and Amulek, almost daring them to intervene. Later, they'll strip these mighty men of God of everything possible but Alma and Amulek stand strong. After a harrowing time in prison, they plead for help from the Lord and receive deliverance. Amazingly, they'll use that freedom to lift the pains of Zeezrom and help restore the Nephites to peace and truth. It's a beautiful week of study.Questions to Consider:Alma 14:8 | Why is the war tactic of targeting women so effective at long-term destruction? Is the opposite true? Zeezrom was a lawyer that loved money! He loved causing contention or fighting so he could earn money. He argued with Alma and Amulek and tried to get them to deny there was a Christ. He even said he would pay them to deny Him. Alma and Amulek could not be tricked. They worked for God and knew Zeezrom was a liar. As Alma and Amulek were teaching the people of Ammonihah, something they said about eternal life, made sense to Zeezrom and he began to shake thinking maybe they were teaching truths. Alma and Amulek were taken to prison. Zeezrom felt horrible. He felt it was his fault. He lay on his bed at home with a very high fever. A few days passed and he heard Alma and Amulek were in his city Sidon. He sent for them to come to his home. They asked if he believed Christ could heal him. Alma blessed him to be healed according to his faith. Zeezrom Leapt to his feet! By God's power Zeezrom was healed. He became a mission companion to Alma and Amulek and taught people the truth about Jesus Christ the rest of his life
An in-depth study of Alma 13-16. This lesson focuses on Alma and Amulek's mission to Ammonihah, foreordination, foreshadowings of Christ, a preparatory redemption, equality of opportunity vs. equality of outcome, anticipating the coming of Christ, true repentance, divine restraint, martyrdom, the conversion of Zeezrom, being brought into God's house, and more.
June 24-30 Have you ever thought about Alma and Amulek watching the believers in Ammonihah burn? It is not just the pain that these are their tender converts. Could it be that Amulek's own family was among that group because he is in particular anguish after the event?
The middle chapters of the Book of Alma have a strong emphasis on missionary stories and events. Alma 9-14 is about Alma and Amulek's preaching in Ammonihah. Alma 17-26 centers us on Ammon with King Lamoni and Aaron with Lamoni's father. Last, Alma 30-34 take us to Alma and Amulek's missionary encounters with Korihor and the Zoramites. In this episode, BYU professors John Hilton, Jan Martin, Tyler Griffin, and Dan Belnap explore these missionary journeys and teachings in an inspiring scripture conversation.

Alma, the prophet goes to Ammonihah to tell the wicked people to repent or their city will be destroyed. Amulek takes Alma to his house and Alma teaches all of Amulek's household. Alma and Amulek then start to teach the people of Ammonihah. Some people believe and repent. Some people do not and are angry. They want to kill Alma and Amulek. They take those that believe and the scriptures and throw them into a big fire. They force Alma and Amulek to watch. Alma and Amulek are so sad. But Alma tells Amulek those who die in the fire will be in Heaven with God. Alma and Amulek are thrown in prison many days. They don't have food or water and are treated very badly. After many days Alma cries to God and their bands are loosed and the walls of the prison shake and fall. Everyone dies in the prison but Alma and Amulek. Amulek goes to live with Alma's family. They serve many missions together. Amulek knows that after his life, if he continues to follow God, he will live in heaven with his family and God forever.

Here, as Alma is feeling like a failure, an angel of the Lord comes and tells him to rejoice! The Lord wasn't concerned that Alma's time in Ammonihah hadn't yielded immediate or measurable success, he was rejoicing in the fact that Alma had been obedient to what the Lord asked of him. Can you and I get ourselves to believe that the Lord is pleased with our efforts? Even on days when we feel like we've failed?

We might feel a little like Alma when he preached the gospel in Ammonihah—rejected, spit on, and cast out. Yet when an angel instructed him to go back and try again, Alma courageously “returned speedily” (Alma 8:18), and God prepared the way before him. Not only did He provide Alma with food to eat and a place to stay, but He also prepared Amulek, who became a fellow laborer, a fierce defender of the gospel, and a faithful friend. LAST WEEK RECAP Before we jump into Alma, let's do a recap of last week. We did not have a podcast episode! I had to substitute a kindergarten class unexpectedly and could not do all the things. However, last week had so many great events.Mosiah 9-22 is the record of Zeniff. Which is so neat. We get several break off stories in Mosiah. We hear about what's happened to those who were separated at various times. Mosiah 11 is the story of Abinidi! In chapter 13, I love that he says, in verse 3 … It reminded me of Nephi and his brothers when Nephi was building the boat. The power that comes to the Lords prophets when they are in need of protection. In chapter 15 verses 1-3 when I read these it seemed to explain to me whey we sometimes hear Jesus Christ referred to as the Father at times. In chapter 17, Alma, who is one of King Noah's priests, believes Abinidi and flees b/c they weren't happy with him when he didn't want to kill Abinidi. Alma runs and finds the waters of Mormon. He writes down everything Abinidi taught. While this is going on Abinidi is put to death. Alma begins his teachings. He starts with a small group that ends up growing and baptizing a lot of people. ALMA THE ELDER We start off with Alma and his people in the wilderness. He is with those who left or were driven out by King Noah. In verse 17-20 it talks about how they were prospering and doing well in the city of Helam.Verse 21-22. They are going to be brought into a bondage - they encounter the Lamanites and the Lamenites say that they are going to protect them. However, they do not do that. They end up telling the people of Alma that they can not pray. In chapter 24: 12-16 Alma says I love that in verse 21 - they took time to Thank the Lord and recognize HIS part and His hand in what had happened. ALMA THE YOUNGER In Alma 27 we meet Alma the Younger and his friends. I want to go ahead and read verse 1 and 3. Some of these were Alma the younger and 3 of Mosiah's sons. Vs. 9Verse 11-16 - I love that he's told to remember those in his past and their lives and stories. This just struck me of the importance of those who have gone before us and their impact on our lives. Of course this is one of those stories most of us know and understand. Alma the younger is converted and becomes a great prophet. Where can you find yourself in this story? What has happened in your life that has strengthened your testimony and made you feel like you want to share the gospel of Jesus Christ? In chapter 29 we get judges appointed. We will see this as the “calendar” for quite some time moving forward. Then Alma begins. The book of Alma is the book of Alma the Younger. He was appointed to be the first chief judge. In chapter 1 of Alma let's read verses 24-26. I also love verse s33. The idea that when we become more still and are righteous, we will not commit wickedness. In Alma 5 Alma is talking to the people of Zarahemla. Let's talk a little about verse 12-16, 19, 21, 26, 27, 28, 31, 34, 36, 40, 43.How do we receive answers: Alma 1:45-46, 48. In Alma 7 Alma testifies and talks of Jesus Christ and His life. He talks about Mary, and the atonement, the resurrection and the deliverance. We are invited to come and be baptized, repent and receive the Holy Ghost. In Alma 8, Alma travels to Melek. It is NOT received well and leaves pretty quickly. However, in verse 15 it says. I love Alma's response in verse 18. Then he will meet Amulek! The great duo is finally coming together. The rest of our section for the week is with these two teachings in Ammonihah. We are going to jump to the end of 13, and chapter 14. I know 14 isn't until next week, technically, but since the story finishes up in 14, I snuck it in. This is when Alma and Amulek are captured. Next week we are reading to Alma 32!

I just started a summer institute class in my area (hello to any of my students that are listening) focused on improving our scripture study skills. This week we kicked off class by identifying the two most important questions asked in scripture. In Mosiah 11:27, King Noah asks after hearing about the prophet Abinadi, "Who is Abinadi, that I and my people should be judged of him, or who is the Lord that shall bring up on my people such great affliction?" Similarly, when Alma preaches to the people of Ammonihah they ask in indignation, "Who art thou…?" and "Who is God…?" (Alma 9:2, 6). In this episode we examine one of the most well-known stories in the Bible, David and Goliath, with a fresh perspective and in search of answers to those two questions. An angel sent Alma back to Ammonihah one last time to finish the job. Alma and Amulek taught the people a highly divisive higher doctrine, boldly proclaimed repentance and sealed their testimony with a prophecy of destruction. Our modern society today is very similar to the evil and conspiring Nehorites and their sleeping citizen slaves, who “do study at this time that they may destroy the liberty of thy people.” Will we ignore the call to repent, or choose destruction as the city of Ammonihah did?
He became a mission companion to Alma and Amulek and taught people the truth about Jesus Christ the rest of his life
Alma, the prophet goes to Ammonihah to tell the wicked people to repent or their city will be destroyed.
On this episode, we cover chapters 15 and 16 of Alma. We discuss Alma and Amulek's arrival in Sidom, the redemption of Zeezrom, the destruction of Ammonihah, and the establishment of the Church all through the land. Recorded 10/24/2021.
On this episode, we discuss Alma chapter 14! Alma and Amulek are taken into bondage and cast into prison. Faithful saints in Ammonihah are burned by fire. Alma and Amulek are delivered by the power of God. Topics include: Mosiah's prophecies, atrocities in human history, types and shadows of Jesus Christ, and much more. Recorded 10/12/2021.
Megan and Calvin share their insights about these women from the Book of Mormon, and the idea of being a "handmaid" of the Lord and how that is related to receiving revelation. As he sat in a jail in Ammonihah, imprisoned for preaching and horrified at witnessing one of the worst atrocities in the Book of Mormon, Alma cried out to God, "How long shall we suffer these great afflictions, O Lord? With so much pain and suffering in the world today we may feel to cry out with the same question. In this study we seek for some answers and solace to why God allows suffering and what we can learn about Him even as we try to endure. Show Notes: Richard G.
