** #125 Alma 9: Face Off! ** :: The boring BUDDY-COP sermon without the BUDDY :: In this episode, Gigi and Patience dive into Christmas propaganda, and the eternal struggle of being a Lamanite in a Nephite world (or vice-versa because in a refreshing twist, Alma doesn't seem to see much of a difference in this chapter). Patience gets a job, then is fired for calling out someone's religious hypocrisy. And Gigi, suggests a career change as an "AI wrangler", like the kind potentially employed (but probably not) on the Church's suspiciously perfect "Light the World" campaign. The same campaign website has a silly "Kindness Randomizer," tool to suggest useless things to do over Xmas (that only make sense if you transposed the 1950s into 2024). Stuff like, making art for your dad, or sending a kind text. Gigi suggests productive ideas like "take in homeless people", or "clean your damn room." Patience suggests dad probably just wants 5 minutes alone. The duo tackle Oakes' recent devotional speech where he addressed accusations that LDS parents in Utah are excluding non-LDS peers from socialising with their spawn. Gigi suggests it's probably less intentional, and more a result of always being at church activities. But the real star of the show is Alma 9, where Alma and his "toy boy" Amulek deliver a fiery sermon full of threats, repetition, and stiff-necked insults. Gigi and Patience dissect the chapter, and Alma's obsession with being "cut off from the face of the earth", and his twist in favor towards the Lamanites. Turns out, God likes them better than the Nephites in this town, who are apparently just too blessed to function. But ultimately God seems to hate everyone he has made. Why doesn't he blame himself? The episode wraps with a wild tangent about Joseph Smith's probable adoration of itinerant preachers at tent revivals, his aversion to hard work, and his genius for turning religion into a lucrative business. Gigi and Patience fantasize about starting their own church, the "Church of the Big Fuck You," where tithes are replaced with "fuck you money." #Reasons to stay home this Sunday# - https://bookofboredom.com/reasons/ #Join the Blasphemy# - https://facebook.com/groups/BookOfBoredom #Patreon (Bonus Episodes)# - https://patreon.com/BookOfBoredom #Twitter# - https://twitter.com/BookOfBoredom #TikTok# - https://tiktok.com/@BookOfBoredomPodcast #Instagram# - https://instagram.com/BookOfBoredomPodcast #YouTube# - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCMjDavWoT73Cev3IAie_XBA #Website# - https://bookofboredom.com/ A nice review on any podcast platform will help frustrate the Heavenly Father's boring plans for your future.
** #124 Alma 8: Amulek breaks Alma's fast (and his back) ** :: Y'all get sleeveless garments for Xmas! So sell your sleeved garments on Depop? :: People try to make maps of the stories from the Bible and the Book of Mormon. But there's a difference. Smitty doesn't use real place names. So don't bother trying to picture any of the travels in Alma 8. Even true believers draw half-hearted squiggles. :: Apart from Alma 8, we discuss: :: In the last LDS General Conference, "Temporary Commands" were introduced as a way to explain away inconsistencies in Mormon revelation. Sister Patience thinks that's a new way to make your head explode. The LDS Church is buying up truckloads of land in Australia. So much in fact it may trigger a law change on how much land can be purchased in one go by a foreign entity. Brother Jones and Sister Patience imagine what a Hypercolor Graphic Novel edition of the Book of Mormon might be like. Sister Patience discovers a 70 person town in the center of Australa comprised entirely of Mormons: Mulga Bore. The air in Salt Lake City sucks right now because of a high-pressure system trapping all the temple dust (among other pullutants). Ok, here is part 2 and I highly recommend watching part 1 first because there is no introduction here, we pick up right where we left off and conclude our examination of potential literary patterns in Amulek's sermon.
Corianton served a mission with his brothers Helaman and Shiblon, his father Alma, Amulek, and Zeezrom. Corianton did not obey the mission rules. He did not do the things he was supposed to, and because of that people did not want to know about the church or God. Alma talked to Corianton. He had to get upset with him to make him understand he needed to do better. Sometimes our parents might get upset with us, or talk to us sternley…for our good, so we will do better. Alma loved his son. Alma knew Corianton could follow his brothers examples and do better.

Alma the prophet heard the Zoramites were no longer following the teachings of the church. He took Amulek, Zeezrom, Ammon, Aaron, Omner, Corianton and Shiblon with him to serve a mission to them. He knew that preaching the word of God to them, and reminding them of the things they once knew was the greatest thing they could do. They got to Antionum and found the people were praying one at a time on a Rameumpton (holy stand) in the middle of their synagogues (churches). Every prayer was exactly the same and then they would never talk about God again. Alma set the men he brought with him apart and asked that they would have strength and wisdom to know how to bring these precious souls back to God.

Alma will teach them about planting seeds of truth and nourishing emerging young growth. He'll help them connect to ancient prophets and increase their faith one hope-filled step at a time. We'll also study Amulek's testimony of the great and last sacrifice of Jesus Christ, followed by his earnest warnings about this life being the time to meet God.Questions to Consider:Alma 32:3-4 | How are poor in the things of the world and poor in spirit connected? How does understanding the gospel allow you to be poor in the world but full of the Spirit? Alma 33:3-11 | How are our afflictions and sincerity an amplifier for our prayers? Send us a Text Message. From Come Follow Me: "For the Zoramites, prayer consisted of standing where all could see and repeating empty, self-satisfied words. The Zoramites lacked faith in Jesus Christ—even denied His existence—and persecuted the poor (see Alma 31:9–25). By contrast, Alma and Amulek taught that prayer has more to do with what happens in our hearts than on a public platform. And if we do not show compassion toward people in need, our prayer is “vain, and availeth … nothing” (Alma 34:28). Most important, we pray because we have faith in Jesus Christ, who offers redemption through His “infinite and eternal sacrifice” (Alma 34:10). Such faith, Alma explained, starts with humility and a “desire to believe” (Alma 32:27). Over time, with constant nourishment, the word of God takes root in our hearts until it becomes “a tree springing up unto everlasting life” (Alma 32:41)."Support the Show:www.patreon.com/SaintsintheSouth(The thoughts, ideas, and beliefs we express on this channel do not officially represent The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In this episode, we delve into Alma chapter 32, where Alma and his fellow missionaries embark on a vigorous mission to preach the gospel among the Zoramites. Despite their challenges, they find success among the poor who are eager to listen. Alma discovers the humble hearts of the poor and teaches them that they can worship God anywhere, not just in synagogues. Alma shares a powerful parable about faith, comparing it to planting a seed that can grow into a tree bearing fruit. He emphasizes the importance of nurturing faith with diligence and patience. Alma's teachings highlight that true faith does not rely on signs but on hope for things unseen. The episode also explores Amulek's testimony, who joins Alma in teaching the Zoramites about the coming of Christ and the significance of the atonement. Amulek explains that the atonement is based on mercy, not justice, and calls the people to repent and seek God's mercy. Through Alma and Amulek's teachings, we learn about the necessity of faith, repentance, and the powerful impact of the atonement. This episode provides profound insights into the principles of faith and the eternal plan of salvation.

An in-depth study of Alma 32-35, recounting the preaching of Alma and Amulek to the Zoramite poor. This lesson focuses on the difference between compulsion and choice, humility, knowledge vs. faith, the experiment on the word, religious epistemology, testimony vs. taste, reversing the Fall, planting the seed, God's mercy because of His Son, the "great question," math or love, sufficient grace, and more.
Today we talk about the incredible forgiveness that Alma and Amulek show.

Send us a Text Message. From Come Follow me: "In many ways, life in Ammonihah had been good for both Amulek and Zeezrom. Amulek was “a man of no small reputation,” with “many kindreds and friends” and “much riches” (Alma 10:4). Zeezrom was an expert lawyer who enjoyed “much business” (Alma 10:31). Then Alma arrived with an invitation to repent and “enter into the rest of the Lord” (Alma 13:16). For Amulek, Zeezrom, and others, accepting this invitation required sacrifice and even led to almost unbearable adversity. But of course the story doesn't end there. In Alma 13–16, we learn what ultimately happens to people who believe “in the power of Christ unto salvation” (Alma 15:6). Sometimes there's deliverance, sometimes healing—and sometimes things don't get any easier in life. But always, “the Lord receiveth [His people] up unto himself, in glory” (Alma 14:11). Always, the Lord grants “power, according to [our] faith … in Christ” (Alma 14:28). And always, that faith gives us “hope that [we] shall receive eternal life” (Alma 13:29). As you read these chapters, you can take comfort in these promises, and you may come to understand better what Alma meant when he spoke of entering into “the rest of the Lord” (Alma 13:16)."Support the Show:www.patreon.com/SaintsintheSouth(The thoughts, ideas, and beliefs we express on this channel do not officially represent The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
Consider joining us at TSAR.website to get more thoughts on this week's reading, especially Alma 13, which we don't cover very much in this episode. In this episode Kylie Turley and Kerry talk about the horrific story of burning women and children at Ammonihah. The delve into the possibility that Amulek's family was part of the martyrs. They talk about how, either way, this would have affected Amulek, who had brought these people to believe and then watched them suffer for it. They use this to discuss hard things that happen to the best of people, and how we can wonder where God is during those times. They look to the Book of Mormon chapters for answers to those tough questions. We are grateful for our sponsors, and for our producer, BJ Muhlestein, and for Rich Nicholls, who composed and plays the music for the podcast.
Our Mothers Knew It with Maria EckersleyA Creative Study of Come, Follow MeBook of Mormon [ALMA 8-12] Insights“They Were Steadfast and Immovable”June 17 – June 23 2024WEEK 26: SUMMARY=================Lesson Summary:Alma and Amulek refuse to give up on the people of Ammonihah. This week, Alma will teach us about Melchizedek and his ability to use the power of the Priesthood to change a sin-sick city. Alma's message resonates with some, but others turn violently against the truth. They'll execute women and children in front of Alma and Amulek, almost daring them to intervene. Later, they'll strip these mighty men of God of everything possible but Alma and Amulek stand strong. After a harrowing time in prison, they plead for help from the Lord and receive deliverance. Amazingly, they'll use that freedom to lift the pains of Zeezrom and help restore the Nephites to peace and truth. It's a beautiful week of study.Questions to Consider:Alma 14:8 | Why is the war tactic of targeting women so effective at long-term destruction? Is the opposite true? If we care for mothers, can we change the world? Could that be what motivates our Relief Society leaders today?Alma 15:18 | What does “strengthening him in the Lord” mean? Are there important parallels between this story and the parable of the Good Samaritan or any of the miracles of Jesus from the New Testament?Alma 16:4-8 | When have you seen other stories like this in scripture? Zeezrom was a lawyer that loved money! He loved causing contention or fighting so he could earn money. He argued with Alma and Amulek and tried to get them to deny there was a Christ. He even said he would pay them to deny Him. Alma and Amulek could not be tricked. They worked for God and knew Zeezrom was a liar. As Alma and Amulek were teaching the people of Ammonihah, something they said about eternal life, made sense to Zeezrom and he began to shake thinking maybe they were teaching truths. Alma and Amulek were taken to prison. Zeezrom felt horrible. He felt it was his fault. He lay on his bed at home with a very high fever. A few days passed and he heard Alma and Amulek were in his city Sidon. He sent for them to come to his home. They asked if he believed Christ could heal him. Alma blessed him to be healed according to his faith. Zeezrom Leapt to his feet! By God's power Zeezrom was healed. He became a mission companion to Alma and Amulek and taught people the truth about Jesus Christ the rest of his life
An in-depth study of Alma 13-16. This lesson focuses on Alma and Amulek's mission to Ammonihah, foreordination, foreshadowings of Christ, a preparatory redemption, equality of opportunity vs. equality of outcome, anticipating the coming of Christ, true repentance, divine restraint, martyrdom, the conversion of Zeezrom, being brought into God's house, and more.
June 24-30 Have you ever thought about Alma and Amulek watching the believers in Ammonihah burn? It is not just the pain that these are their tender converts. Could it be that Amulek's own family was among that group because he is in particular anguish after the event?
The middle chapters of the Book of Alma have a strong emphasis on missionary stories and events. Alma 9-14 is about Alma and Amulek's preaching in Ammonihah. Alma 17-26 centers us on Ammon with King Lamoni and Aaron with Lamoni's father. Last, Alma 30-34 take us to Alma and Amulek's missionary encounters with Korihor and the Zoramites. Alma, the prophet goes to Ammonihah to tell the wicked people to repent or their city will be destroyed. Amulek takes Alma to his house and Alma teaches all of Amulek's household. Alma and Amulek then start to teach the people of Ammonihah. Some people believe and repent. Some people do not and are angry. They want to kill Alma and Amulek. They take those that believe and the scriptures and throw them into a big fire. They force Alma and Amulek to watch. Alma and Amulek are so sad. But Alma tells Amulek those who die in the fire will be in Heaven with God. Alma and Amulek are thrown in prison many days. They don't have food or water and are treated very badly. After many days Alma cries to God and their bands are loosed and the walls of the prison shake and fall. Everyone dies in the prison but Alma and Amulek. Amulek goes to live with Alma's family. They serve many missions together. Amulek knows that after his life, if he continues to follow God, he will live in heaven with his family and God forever.

To get even more on this powerful block of scripture, consider going to TSAR.website and joining to listen to Kerry's Daily Bread shorts on Alma 8-12.In this episode Jan Martin and Kerry discuss some of the principles from Alma and Amulek's powerful sermons. They talk about the importance of working to bear multiple witnesses. They talk about the need to learn how to fail successfully, and how that propels Alma towards Amulek and the sermons they preach together. They also talk about the way these men teach us to choose eternal life. They share insights about how Alma's own experiences colored how he taught and implored the people of Ammonihah. We are grateful for our sponsors and for our producer, BJ Muhlestein, and for Rich Nicholls, who composed and plays the music for the podcast.

Our Mothers Knew It with Maria EckersleyA Creative Study of Come, Follow MeBook of Mormon [ALMA 8-12] Insights“They Were Steadfast and Immovable”June 17 – June 23 2024WEEK 25: SUMMARY=================Lesson Summary:This week, Alma, we'll travel with Alma through Melek and Ammonihah. The people in Melek heed his teachings but those in Ammonihah reject him and cast him out of their city. Thankfully, Alma's angel returns to lift his heart and send him back to teach. On his return, he meets Amulek and the two of them become a mighty force for good. Together, they'll slice through the tricks of the adversary with a sword of truth and preach pure, hope-filled messages of Jesus Christ. Questions to Consider:Alma 8:6-10 | Where else do you see shadows of Christ in Alma's character and experiences this week? Alma 10:17-23 | The Spirit of Prophecy helps Amulek navigate their trick questions. What facet of your life is like this for you? When have you felt that same ease spiritually? If you haven't, what can you learn from your other skill to help you hone your spiritual skills?Alma 11:42-45 | Amulek uses the word “restore” and “restoration” often. Why is that such a fitting term doctrinally for resurrection? What types of things are restored? What's the process of restoring something of great worth? What are the limitations on restoration?CHAPTERS=========00:00:13 INSIGHTS INTRODUCTION00:04:29 INSIGHTS CHAPTER SUMMARY00:10:43 SPARK 1: GOD'S RELENTLESS PURSUIT00:21:22 SPARK 2: OUR MALCHUS MOMENT00:31:02 SPARK 3: THE VASTNESS OF SPACE00:40:06 QUESTIONS00:44:52 WRAP UPLINKS=====WEB: https://www.gather.meckmom.comINSTAGRAM: Instagram @meckmomlifePODCAST: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast...CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST DISCLAIMER=================================This podcast represents my own thoughts and opinions. Send us a Text Message. From Come Follow Me: "God's work will not fail. But our efforts to help with His work sometimes seem to fail—at least, we may not immediately see the outcomes we hope for. We might feel a little like Alma when he preached the gospel in Ammonihah—rejected, spit on, and cast out. Yet when an angel instructed him to go back and try again, Alma courageously “returned speedily” (Alma 8:18), and God prepared the way before him. Not only did He provide Alma with food to eat and a place to stay, but He also prepared Amulek, who became a fellow laborer, a fierce defender of the gospel, and a faithful friend. When we face setbacks and disappointments as we serve in the Lord's kingdom, we can remember how God supported and led Alma, and we can trust that God will support and lead us too, even in difficult circumstances."Support the Show:www.patreon.com/SaintsintheSouth(The thoughts, ideas, and beliefs we express on this channel do not officially represent The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
