Why? It’s the question that draws so many of us to true crime. Why would someone kill? What drives a person to stalk? Are some people truly evil? Are good people capable of terrible things? We grapple with these questions, trying to make sense of the unimaginable. Is it their childhood? Their biology? Or something more complex? These aren’t just the questions we ask. Detectives, forensic psychologists, and criminal behaviour analysts have spent lifetimes trying to understand the minds of those who commit the unthinkable. In this episode, you'll hear from these experts. Crime Insiders is hosted by Brent Sanders and Kathryn Fox. Guests in this episode include Ricky Hennessy, Professor Troy McEwan, and Julia Cowley. If you or anyone you know needs help: Lifeline (Crisis support and suicide prevention) 13 11 14 1800 Respect (National sexual assault, family and domestic violence counselling line) 1800 737 732 Men's Referral Service (National counselling, information and referral service for men looking to change their behaviour) 1300 766 491 Full Stop Australia (National violence and abuse trauma counselling and recovery Service) 1800 385 578 See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
A man-hunt that lasted more than 7 years. One of Australia's most wanted men finally caught. But by who? And at what cost? Ricky Hennessy was an integral member of the NSW Police Force for over 22 years. His skill, and level of focus lead to several high-profile convictions all across Australia. One of his most notable, was the capture of fugitive and convicted killer Malcolm Naden; who was on the run in NSW bushland for more than 7 years. With host and former police officer Brent Sanders, understand Ricky Hennessy's work - and experience a behind the scenes retelling of the capture of Naden, and the interview and interrogation which lead to a successful conviction.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
I would never wish the years of uncertainty, overthinking, and isolation on anyone navigating their queerness. But, there's something magical about the person who comes out at the other end of all that. And one of the best parts of Lost Spaces is getting to speak with people who have reached that place of self-assuredness, and who are so confident in who they are and the path they're meant to be on. But for this week's guest, Jane Postlethwaite, who is a stand-up comedian and host of All the Terrible Things: A Paranormal Queer Comedy Podcast, it was a pretty long road. She didn't realise she was a lesbian until well into her 30s, And it was, in part, thanks to the warm, welcoming audience at the Indigo Club, a comedy night in Brighton, England, that she began to put the pieces together about her true self. Consider joining us at TSAR.website to get more thoughts on this week's reading, especially Alma 13, which we don't cover very much in this episode. In this episode Kylie Turley and Kerry talk about the horrific story of burning women and children at Ammonihah. The delve into the possibility that Amulek's family was part of the martyrs. They talk about how, either way, this would have affected Amulek, who had brought these people to believe and then watched them suffer for it. They use this to discuss hard things that happen to the best of people, and how we can wonder where God is during those times. They look to the Book of Mormon chapters for answers to those tough questions. We are grateful for our sponsors, and for our producer, BJ Muhlestein, and for Rich Nicholls, who composed and plays the music for the podcast.
In this episode, we're diving deep into transforming any negative situation into a positive one. One of the most challenging realizations is that our perception and reaction to situations are choices—though not all choices carry the same weight. Your past, experiences, and current circumstances influence these choices, but ultimately, they are yours to make. When life is challenging—whether it's financial troubles, job dissatisfaction, or personal health issues—the universal laws remain unchanged. Your power to alter your perception of these situations remains intact. Choosing your focus is critical. You will experience a range of emotions, but you have the agency to select the frequency of your life, even amidst adversity. If you choose to live in a state of love and forgiveness, you'll find strength and truth in those energies, regardless of external circumstances. Even if the external environment is harsh, you are not merely a product of it. You can break free from negative cycles by choosing how you engage with your experiences. Focusing on what you don't want only magnifies those elements in your life. Instead, shift your focus to what uplifts and strengthens you, enhancing your connection to your desired frequency. This approach may not immediately change your external circumstances, like the economy or your living conditions, but it can transform how you feel within those circumstances. The internal change is what truly matters, as external achievements without internal fulfillment can lead to greater dissatisfaction. The world reflects your inner state. If you are negative, you will perceive negativity in every situation. Conversely, adopting a positive internal state allows you to perceive and react to life in a more hopeful and constructive manner. Every choice is unique, influenced by different life circumstances, but all choices are powerful. They define the stronger version of yourself that emerges from challenges. You might not have chosen every aspect of your life, but you have chosen the kind of person you wish to be within it. Remember, you are not here to judge others' choices or compare your journey to theirs. Your path is your own, and it's filled with opportunities for expansion, healing, forgiveness, and joy, regardless of your current struggles. Gratitude is a powerful tool. It connects you to the positive aspects of your life and aligns your thoughts and actions with your aspirations. Repeatedly practicing gratitude and alignment fortifies your identity and your experience. In challenging times, be the light for others who are struggling. Show them that change is possible, and inspire them by being an example of transformation. You have the power to shape your experience through the choices you make. Don't give away this power by blaming external factors. Embrace your role as the creator of your reality and use it to lift yourself and others. - Henry -------------------------------- Social Media Say hi on TikTok Say Hi on Instagram -------------------------------- Email Me henry@vibeabundant.com -------------------------------- Email List --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/positive-mindset-podcast/support

MPR News host Kerri Miller has never skirted the topic of faith. On her former weekday show, she regularly dialoged with leaders like Jenan Mohajir from Interfaith America, activist and author Anne Lamott, theologian Jemar Tisby, Sister Joan Chittister, and evangelical disrupter Rachel Held Evans. She even did a year-long series with women from a variety of faith backgrounds in 2019. So it seemed fitting, during the 2024 winter member drive, to return to this theme and remember a few of the best conversations. Included are portions of Miller's recent discussion with Pastor Amy Butler, who penned the memoir, “Beautiful and Terrible Things;” Miller's 2019 conversation with podcaster Misha Euceph about being Muslim in America; and a snippet of the 2023 Talking Volumes season finale with author Margaret Renkl about why Renkl left the Catholic church of her upbringing and found a new one in nature.
The Rev. Dr. Amy Butler is a master at facing reality and claiming leadership. In her newly released memoir, Beautiful and Terrible Things: Faith, Doubt, and Discovering a Way Back to Each Other, she weaves together what is real and messy and hard with what is true and hopeful and redemptive, reminding us that the journey of faith is inextricably all those things. In our conversation with Pastor Amy, we get to experience a powerful leader, whose vulnerability and honesty offer a witness of the kind of leadership our beautiful (and terrible) world needs today. We hope you find it inspiring as you seek to navigate and lead in this season! If this podcast is meaningful to you, please share with friends and colleagues and leave us a review. Thanks for listening! In this conversation, you'll hear:Why Amy chose “Beautiful and Terrible Things” as her theme and book titleThe beautiful and terrible things present in the church todayThe connection between vulnerability and leadership and how Amy has leaned into vulnerabilityAmy's vision for Invested Faith, the philanthropic initiative she founded An excerpt from Amy's bookAbout Amy ButlerRev. Episode 178 “Beautiful and Terrible Things” with Christian Brady Tragedy has a way of bringing people together. People who might not meet otherwise hear about and then seek out connection with people who have a shared experience. Listeners to this podcast will recall that in 2019 the adult son of David Capes, our host, and his wife, Cathy, died at the age of 36 from a vicious and rare cancer. They have been open about their grief. Well, years earlier Christian Brady and his wife, Elizabeth, had a tragic experience of their own when their son, Mack, age 9, died of sepsis. Parents should never have to say good-bye like this to their children. It is unnatural, and yet it happens far too often. Christian Brady joins David Capes on The Stone Chapel Podcasts to talk about his book, Beautiful and Terrible Things: A Christian Struggle with Suffering, Grief, and Hope (Westminster John Knox Press, 2020). Who Is Christian Brady? Christian Brady is Professor of Ancient Hebrew and Jewish Literature and the Dean of the Lewis Honors College at the University of Kentucky. He is also a priest in the Episcopal Diocese of Lexington, KY. He is married to Elizabeth. Together they have two children, though one they no longer see. “Beautiful and Terrible Things” Brady has written an important book, reflecting deeply on grief, faith and Scripture. Whoever reads this book will feel guided gently through the losses that come from life's tragedies. As “lament” is a common theme in Scripture, so it is in this book. He gives us the language we need to do the important work of grief. What Scholars say about “Beautiful and Terrible Things” Here is what Walter Brueggemann said of this book: “Brady's witness is to the costly process of grief and the prospect of faith that will not alleviate but will carry us through that cost. This book will serve well those who face such anguished loss. Beyond that, the book is enriched with study questions for those who know that, sooner or later, we will all lose our loved one and will be summoned to such grief.” Resources For a transcript of this podcast, click here. “Here is the world,” writes theologian Frederick Buechner. “Beautiful and terrible things will happen. Don't be afraid.”Those words rooted Amy Butler through some of the darkest moments of her life. As Butler slowly embraced her call to be a pastor, she was rejected by her conservative evangelical family, who doesn't believe women should be in pastoral roles. She was the first woman ever appointed to lead the historic Riverside Church in New York City, but the challenges of breaking the “stained glass ceiling” almost caused her to lose her faith. In her new memoir, “Beautiful and Terrible Things,” Butler takes us inside her life story. She covers joyful and painful moments, including the loss of a child, her unexpected divorce and the hardships of being a woman in ministry. But ultimately, as she tells MPR News host Kerri Miller on this week's Big Books and Bold Ideas, she found that vulnerability is worth it. Butler writes in the introduction, “The invitation to become who we're meant to be happens at the intersection of human pain and divine hope, and almost always in the context of relationship.”Guest: Rev. Amy Butler is currently pastoring a Baptist church in her home state of Hawaii. Her new book is “Beautiful and Terrible Things: Faith, Doubt and Discovering a Way Back To Each Other.”Subscribe to Big Books and Bold Ideas with Kerri Miller podcast on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, RSS or anywhere you get your podcasts.Subscribe to the Thread newsletter for the latest book and author news and must-read recommendations.

Today on the podcast we welcome the Rev. Dr. Amy Butler to Beloved Journal. Amy's recently released book, "Beautiful and Terrible Things" speaks to her journey through ministry and life. Dr. Butler is currently serving as the Designated Pastor of Community Church of Honolulu in Hawaii. She was the seventh Senior Minister of the Riverside Church, and the first woman to serve in that role. She also held pastorates at Calvary Baptist Church in Washington DC and St. Charles Avenue Baptist Church in New Orleans. She is also the founder of Invested Faith. Check out Amy's new book: Beautiful and Terrible Things. Check out Invested Faith.
In her recent memoir, Beautiful and Terrible Things: Faith, Doubt, and Discovering A Way Back to Each Other, Rev. Dr. Amy Butler shares about finding her way through wreckage after wreckage. A deeply personal, yet incredibly universal memoir. She's here with us today to share more of her story, talk about where God's Spirit has been nudging her lately, and, of course, what she is still learning.Important LinksLearn more about Pastor AmyLearn more about Invested Faith Order Pastor Amy's new book, Beautiful and Terrible ThingsAbout AmyPastor Amy believes deeply that courageous communities of people who live with tenacious love can change the world. Much of her career has been spent helping build communities of radical witness in the institutional church. She is currently serving as Designated Pastor at the Community Church of Honolulu in Hawai'i.Before that, Amy served for for five years as the seventh Senior Minister and first woman at the helm of The Riverside Church in the City of New York. She holds degrees from Baylor University, the International Baptist Theological Seminary, and Wesley Theological Seminary. Pastor Amy's professional ministry career began as the director of a homeless shelter for women in New Orleans, Louisiana; she later became Associate Pastor of Membership and Mission at St. Charles Avenue Baptist Church in the city of New Orleans. In 2003, Butler was called to the position of Senior Minister of Calvary Baptist Church in Washington, D.C.'s Chinatown, where she was also the first woman to lead that historic congregation. Though leading institutions of faith in this moment can be one of the most challenging leadership tasks around, she is optimistic about the impact faith communities have on the world. When she's not busy leading, teaching, preaching or writing, Pastor Amy enjoys the beach (obviously), and hanging out with friends. She is an avid reader and loves to write, recently completing her first memoir, now published by Penguin Random House Books. Pastor Amy is mom to three amazing young adults who are each making their way in the world; they are her favorites. In a setback for the No. 24 Kansas Jayhawks, their undefeated streak in the 2023 season came to an end this Saturday as they faced a 40-14 defeat against the No. 3 Texas Longhorns at DKR-Memorial Stadium in Austin. This loss drops Kansas to a 4-1 record for the year, with a 1-1 standing in Big 12 play, while the Longhorns improved to an impressive 5-0, with a 2-0 record in the Big 12. The game saw Texas taking the lead with scoring drives on their first two possessions, resulting in a 10-0 advantage late in the first quarter. The Longhorns' initial drive concluded with a 30-yard touchdown run, while the Jayhawks' defense managed to limit them to a 26-yard field goal on their subsequent drive. Kansas initiated their third possession starting from the 25-yard line and successfully moved the ball into Texas territory as the first quarter ended. Early in the second quarter, Kansas experienced a fortunate turn of events when quarterback Jason Bean broke into open field for a substantial gain but lost control of the ball upon being tackled. Fortunately, running back Daniel Hishaw Jr. was right behind, scooping up the fumble and running it 18 yards into the end zone for a touchdown, narrowing the deficit to 10-7 with 14:05 remaining in the half. Kansas' defense continued to hold the Longhorns to field goal attempts on their next two drives, with Texas only converting on one, resulting in a 13-7 lead for the Longhorns at halftime. The half concluded on a positive note for Kansas as linebacker Cornell Wheeler made a significant play by intercepting Quinn Ewers at the 16-yard line. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! The creator of My Life As a Teenage Robot, Rob Renzetti, is on the #ReadingWithYourKids #Podcast to celebrate his new #MiddleGrade #Novel The Horrible Bag Of Terrible Things. Rob tells us this is a story about a horrible bag, the spine-chilling world hidden within it, and a terrifying adventure into the world of GrahBhag. Perfect for fans of Coraline, the Spiderwick Chronicles, and Small Spaces. In this novel Rob introduces us to Zenith, a typical kid who finds a strange, unsettling bag at his front door, he's not sure where it came from or who sent it to him. He knows better than to expect his overprotective older sister Apogee to help him figure it out, because ever since she became a teenager, she's been acting more like a parent to him than a sibling. But he certainly did not expect for a horrifying spiderlike creature to emerge from the bag, kidnap Apogee, and drag her inside to the equally horrifying and unsettling world of GrahBhag. Zenith sets off into the bag to bring her back but soon finds a bizarre realm where malicious forests, a trio of blood-drinking mouths, and a sentient sawdust-stuffed giant are lurking within the seams.
