This episode is part 15 in a series going through the story of the Book of Mormon. This episode covers chapters 4-8 of the book of Mosiah. King Benjamin passes the crown of Zarahemla to his son Mosiah. The people all covenant with God and take on the name "the children of Christ."After King Benjamin passes away three years later, King Mosiah sends a band of men to the land of Nephi to find out what happened to others they had sent. Some stay near a hill in Silom outside the land of Nephi while Ammon and his three brothers enter. King Limhi of the Nephites arrests them and asks why they're there. When Limhi finds out they're from Zarahemla just as his grandfather was, they rejoice. The Lamanites had subjected the Nephites to burdensome taxes.Ammon and his brothers learn that some Nephite travelers had retrieved some golden plates from a more ancient civilization. We also find out that a "seer" is superior to an "interpreter" and a "prophet."Further research:Book of Mormon in videoJoseph Smith: The Prophet of the RestorationThe Book of Mormon online: Mosiah [chapters 4, 5, 6, 7, 8]*** Please contribute to the Hurricane relief fund for A.M. In this episode of Religion Today, host Martin Tanner describes from the original, primary sources, how Joseph Smith likely translated the Book of Mormon.  Oliver Cowdery, Martin Harris, David Whitmer and others speculated that Joseph Smith saw words or letters in his seer stone or in the Nephite Interpreters.  This cannot be true, because Joseph Smith made revisions to the completed manuscript, which he would never have done if the words were God's alone.  Joseph Smith told Joseph Knight that he "could see anything" in the Nephite Interpreters.  This implies Joseph Smith could literally see the events in the Book of Mormon text, along with emotions, untranslated words, clothing, animals, buildings, way of life, and other details of Nephite life in the Nephite Interpreters.

** #125 Alma 9: Face Off! ** :: The boring BUDDY-COP sermon without the BUDDY :: In this episode, Gigi and Patience dive into Christmas propaganda, and the eternal struggle of being a Lamanite in a Nephite world (or vice-versa because in a refreshing twist, Alma doesn't seem to see much of a difference in this chapter). Patience gets a job, then is fired for calling out someone's religious hypocrisy. And Gigi, suggests a career change as an "AI wrangler", like the kind potentially employed (but probably not) on the Church's suspiciously perfect "Light the World" campaign. The same campaign website has a silly "Kindness Randomizer," tool to suggest useless things to do over Xmas (that only make sense if you transposed the 1950s into 2024). Stuff like, making art for your dad, or sending a kind text. Gigi suggests productive ideas like "take in homeless people", or "clean your damn room." Patience suggests dad probably just wants 5 minutes alone. The duo tackle Oakes' recent devotional speech where he addressed accusations that LDS parents in Utah are excluding non-LDS peers from socialising with their spawn. Gigi suggests it's probably less intentional, and more a result of always being at church activities. But the real star of the show is Alma 9, where Alma and his "toy boy" Amulek deliver a fiery sermon full of threats, repetition, and stiff-necked insults. Gigi and Patience dissect the chapter, and Alma's obsession with being "cut off from the face of the earth", and his twist in favor towards the Lamanites. Turns out, God likes them better than the Nephites in this town, who are apparently just too blessed to function. But ultimately God seems to hate everyone he has made. Why doesn't he blame himself? The episode wraps with a wild tangent about Joseph Smith's probable adoration of itinerant preachers at tent revivals, his aversion to hard work, and his genius for turning religion into a lucrative business. Gigi and Patience fantasize about starting their own church, the "Church of the Big Fuck You," where tithes are replaced with "fuck you money." #Reasons to stay home this Sunday# - https://bookofboredom.com/reasons/ #Join the Blasphemy# - https://facebook.com/groups/BookOfBoredom #Patreon (Bonus Episodes)# - https://patreon.com/BookOfBoredom #Twitter# - https://twitter.com/BookOfBoredom #TikTok# - https://tiktok.com/@BookOfBoredomPodcast #Instagram# - https://instagram.com/BookOfBoredomPodcast #YouTube# - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCMjDavWoT73Cev3IAie_XBA #Website# - https://bookofboredom.com/ A nice review on any podcast platform will help frustrate the Heavenly Father's boring plans for your future.

Send us a textFrom Come Follow me:        "Before Moroni concluded the record we know today as the Book of Mormon with his own final words, he shared three messages from his father, Mormon: an address to “the peaceable followers of Christ” (Moroni 7:3) and two letters that Mormon had written to Moroni. Perhaps Moroni included these messages in the Book of Mormon because he foresaw similarities between the perils of his day and ours. When these words were written, the Nephite people were turning away from the Savior. Many of them had “lost their love, one towards another” and delighted in “everything save that which is good” (Moroni 9:5, 19). And yet Mormon still found cause for hope, teaching us that hope does not mean ignoring or being naive about the world's problems. Hope means having faith in Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ, whose power is greater and more everlasting than these problems. It means “lay[ing] hold upon every good thing” (Moroni 7:19). It means letting the Atonement of Jesus Christ “and the hope of his glory and of eternal life, rest in your mind” (Moroni 9:25)."Support the show:www.patreon.com/SaintsintheSouth(The thoughts, ideas, and beliefs we express on this channel do not officially represent The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  For additional information or official statements, please visit the website below.  The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints: https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/?lang=eng)#biblestudy #oldtestament #religion #churchofJesusChrist #ldspodcast #christianpodcast #missionary #lds #biblestories #christ #faith #faithinchrist #scriptures #bookofmormon #doctrineandcovenants #pearlofgreatprice #temples #houseofthelord #mormon #mormonbeliefs #christiansandmormons #god #endure #ironrod #faithineveryfootstep #generalconference #prophets #followtheprophet #commandments #love #service #charity #keepstriving #keeponstriving #gospelgrowthandgoodtimes #become #newtestamentAsk Me Anything - EP. 6 "Therapy, Medication + Mental Health"The podcast where we answer IT ALL! Moroni shares a significant sermon by his father, Mormon, focusing on the essential gospel themes of faith, hope, and charity and how these virtues are essential for spiritual growth and salvation. He highlights the enduring nature of charity, the pure love of Christ, as the greatest virtue one can possess. In another epistle by Mormon, this one written directly to Moroni, he discusses the erroneous practice of infant baptism. Mormon clarifies that little children are innocent and saved through Christ's atonement, which negates the need for baptism before accountability.  Mormon writes again to Moroni, and focuses on the dire circumstances of the Nephite people, highlighting their moral decay, loss of love towards all and their thirst for blood and revenge. He talks of the imminent destruction of the people. Mormon encourages Moroni, despite these grievous times, to remain steadfast and faithful in Christ. Mormon pleads that the grace of God abide with his son, Moroni, forever.

Moroni sets forth guidelines for the restoration of the church in the latter days, including the required power and authority by the laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost and for ordaining priesthood offices. He relates the requirements necessary in the administration of the sacrament for both bread and wine. Moroni also outlines the qualifications for baptism, stressing the need for genuine repentance and a commitment to seek and serve Christ to the end. He provides guidance on maintaining the integrity of the church by addressing iniquity among its members and underscores the importance of fellowship and forgiveness. Finally, Moroni teaches how church meetings should be conducted under the guidance of the Holy Ghost, fostering an environment of spiritual growth in teaching, exhorting, praying and in song.

The Nephite prophets were members of an esoteric lineage that wrote for an audience that they expected to possess eyes to see and ears to hear, and the intended way to understand the meaning of their writings is to read through the lens of our own temple experience. He embodied his early thoughts in this vein in a pair of short books, Plain and Precious Things and The Goodness and the Mysteries, both self-published under the pen name D. John Butler. Mormon confronts the collapse of the Nephite civilization and speaks to the future Lamanites of the latter days, telling them who they really are and their need to repent and lay down their weapons of war. In his final writing he pleads that they will read this record of the Book of Mormon, along with the Bible, and accept Jesus Christ by baptism and receive the Holy Ghost. Moroni finishes the record as commanded by his father Mormon. He laments the destruction of the Nephites and his solitude, but commits his determination to preserve the sacred writings amidst the destruction. Moroni offers a poignant reflection on the condition of the world in the latter days, foreseeing widespread disbelief, pride, moral decay and the works of darkness. He urges future generations who receive this record, to seek God with unshaken firmness, and to work out one's own exaltaion through Jesus Christ.

Chosen by the Nephite historian Ammaron, Mormon is given charge of the sacred records. Amidst a backdrop of wars, political upheaval, and spiritual corruption, we follow Mormon's journey from a young observer to the commander of the Nephite armies. As the Nephites face relentless battles against the Lamanites, Mormon continues to plead with the Nephites to repent and look to God for their hope and for their success. Despite moments of victory, the pervasive wickedness among the Nephites leads to devastating consequences as the entire Nephite nation is destroyed.

A Lamanite prophet named Samuel appears among the Nephites around 6 BC. His mission is to call the Nephites to repentance amidst their deepening wickedness. Despite being thrown out of the city of Zarahemla, Samuel returns, climbing the city wall and delivers God's warnings and predictions. Samuel boldly prophesies of the coming of Jesus Christ and the devastating consequences for the Nephites if they do not repent. His bold declarations included the appearance of a new star, other miraculous signs in the heavens, and a period of three days of darkness at the time of Christ's death. Samuel's words were met with a mix of belief and violent rejection, leading to a miraculous escape from Zarahemla. The episode concludes with Samuel's powerful message of repentance and the eventual fulfillment of his prophecies, setting the stage for the coming of Christ and the subsequent transformation of the Nephite and Lamanite societies.

September 9-15 In the Book of Mormon, the Nephites always think of themselves as the good guys. In a movie, they'd ride in wearing the white hat or the gold star, signifying their goodness. Yet, the Book of Mormon demonstrates that often the Nephites are relentlessly blind to their own wickedness and it is the Lamanites who are the most faithful and true. Enter the scene into the wicked Nephite city of Zarahemla: Samuel the Lamanite. The point is clear.

Our Mothers Knew It with Maria EckersleyA Creative Study of Come, Follow MeBook of Mormon [HELAMAN 7-12] Insights“Remember the Lord”September 2 – September 8 2024WEEK 36: SUMMARY=================Lesson Summary:This week, we see a prophet's role up close. We'll follow Nephi as he works diligently to reclaim Nephite hearts for the Lord. We'll hear him pray for his people from his garden tower and watch as those same people accuse him of conspiracy. Nephi will be weighed down with sorrow at times and lifted up by the Lord at others. His tenacity through it all will inspire you to study the words of our prophet and seek the wisdom God is eager to give you.1. Helaman 7:11Nephi has a desperate prayer to offer for the people. He doesn't go to a private place. He prays on a garden tower near the highway. Question: Do you think this was deliberately demonstrative? What did he think would happen? Is there a comparison between this experience and Daniel's prayer with his windows open (see Daniel 6:10)?Jack N Gerard, Apr 2024, Integrity: A Christlike attribute2. Helaman 11:23After a period of peace, contentions well up. Nephi and Lehi and otehrs are able to neutralize those contentions by teaching truth “having many revelations daily”Question: When have you felt this surge in your life? Do you see this playing out in the lives of prophets and apostles today? We tend to focus on conference. How does daily revelation trickle down into the church now?3. Helaman 12:5Mormon is warning about how prosperity tends to harden our hearts and make us forget God's goodness. He said “they do harden their hearts, and do forget the Lord their God, and do trample under their feet the Holy One—yea, and this because of their ease, and their exceedingly great prosperity.”Question: What does it mean to trample the Holy One under our feet? Does this have something to do with his posture as a Redeemer Or is this about our own dismissiveness Or could it be about our casualness in expecting and receiving His gift?CHAPTERS=========00:00:13 INSIGHTS INTRODUCTION00:02:37 INSIGHTS CHAPTER SUMMARY00:10:00 SPARK 1: HELAMAN & HANNAH00:18:40 SPARK 2: THE INVISIBLE BATTLE00:28:15 SPARK 3: THE RELUCTANT DISCO BALL00:31:45 QUESTIONS00:41:21 WRAP UPLINKS=====WEB: https://www.gather.meckmom.comINSTAGRAM: Instagram @meckmomlifePODCAST: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast...CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST DISCLAIMER=================================This podcast represents my own thoughts and opinions. The Nephite society faces political instability following the death of Chief Judge Pahoran, leading to contentious elections and the rise of rebellion. As political factions vie for power, Kishkumen's secretive band of murderers emerges, culminating in the assassination of Pahoran and his successor. Meanwhile, Coriantumr, an apostate Nephite, leads a massive Lamanite army to a surprising victory over Zarahemla, only to be outmaneuvered by Moronihah's strategic brilliance. Amidst the chaos, Helaman's sons, Nephi and Lehi, embark on a mission to preach the gospel. Their efforts lead to astonishing conversions among the Lamanites, who surpass the Nephites in righteousness. However, the Gadianton robbers infiltrate Nephite society, driving it into deeper corruption while the Lamanites strive to eradicate the band from their midst. Despite brief periods of peace and prosperity, the Nephites' increasing wickedness and the rise of secret combinations spell impending doom. This episode highlights the stark contrast between the declining Nephite nation and the spiritually ascending Lamanites, emphasizing themes of repentance, righteousness, and the power of faith amidst adversity.

August 19-25 The ten chapters that we look at today are about both the low and high points of the Nephite nation. This is a time of continual war, brought on in large part by the “contentions, and dissensions, and all manner of iniquity of the people of Nephi” (Alma 62:40) At the same time, just as the light shines more clearly in a darkened world, we see the power of goodness in Helaman's 2060 stripling warriors. The image of these young men carrying the banner of freedom and faith with such unflinching goodness is one that shines right into our hearts today.

Send us a Text Message. From Come Follow Me:The accounts in Alma 30–31 clearly demonstrate the power of words—for evil and for good. The “flattering” and “great swelling words” of a false teacher named Korihor threatened to bring “many souls down to destruction” (Alma 30:31, 47). Similarly, the teachings of a Nephite dissenter named Zoram led a whole group of people to fall “into great errors” and “pervert the ways of the Lord” (Alma 31:9, 11).In contrast, Alma had unwavering faith that the word of God would have a “more powerful effect upon the minds of the people than the sword, or anything else” (Alma 31:5). Alma's words expressed eternal truth and drew upon the powers of Jesus Christ to silence Korihor (see Alma 30:39–50), and they invited His blessing on those who went with him to bring the Zoramites back to the truth (see Alma 31:31–38). These are valuable examples for followers of Christ today when false messages are common. We can find truth by trusting, as Alma did, “the virtue of the word of God” (Alma 31:5).The thoughts, ideas, and beliefs we express on this channel do not officially represent The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.  For additional information or official statements, please visit the website below. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints:https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/?lang=eng#biblestudy #oldtestament #religion #churchofjesuschrist #ldspodcast #christianpodcast #missionary #lds #biblestories #christ #faith #faithinchrist #scriptures #bookofmormon #doctrineandcovenants #pearlofgreatprice #temples #houseofthelord #mormon #mormonbeliefs #chritiansandmormons #god #endure #ironrod #faithineveryfootstep #generalconference #prophets #followtheprophet #commandments #love #service #charity #keepstriving #keeponstriving #gospelgrowthandgoodtimes #become #newtestamentiMOM PodcastIf you need a mom friend right now, you've come to the right place. July 1-7 Can you imagine if today you opened a mission call and it was for a 14-year mission to a violent people whose aim was to destroy you? You might think twice about that kind of call. Yet, the sons of Mosiah, Nephite princes who could have had a very different life, chose to go to preach to the Lamanites, a people described as “wild and a hardened and a ferocious people; a people who delighted in murdering the Nephites” (Alma 17:14). No wonder Mosiah was concerned about the safety of his sons, and sought counsel from the Lord, who gave him a promise.

In 3 Nephi and Moroni, the resurrected Savior provides specific directions to the Nephites regarding four rituals: baptism by immersion, the bestowal of the gift of the Holy Ghost, communal prayer, and the sacrament. Why were such rituals important to the Savior and his ministry among the Nephites? How can understanding these teachings help us with our discipleship in the latter days? In this episode Dr. David Calabro, visiting assistant professor of ancient scripture, answers these questions in discussing his chapter “Jesus Christ as a Revealer of Ordinances in the Book of Mormon” from I Glory in My Jesus: Understanding Christ in the Book of Mormon. Professor Calabro briefly compares the New Testament and Book of Mormon depictions of these rituals and highlights how the Nephite record more fully depicts the Savior's character as a generous giver of blessings. He explains how, as a revealer of ordinances in the Book of Mormon, the Savior both presents the actions and wording of each ritual and explains with great emphasis the blessings associated with each ordinance. In understanding and applying these rituals, we, like the Nephites, may approach the living Christ and gain an experiential witness of him.    Publications:   “Jesus Christ as a Revealer of Ordinances in the Book of Mormon” (in I Glory In My Jesus: Understanding Christ in the Book of Mormon, Religious Studies Center, 2024)  He Was Seen: Witnessing the Risen Christ (Religious Studies Center, 2024)  “Disability and Social Justice in Ancient Israelite Culture” (in Covenant of Compassion: Caring for the Marginalized and Disadvantaged in the Old Testament, Religious Studies Center, 2021)  “Nonverbal Communication in the New Testament” (in New Testament History, Culture, and Society: A Background to the Texts of the New Testament, Religious Studies Center, 2019)  “‘Stretch Forth Thy Hand and Prophesy': Hand Gestures in the Book of Mormon” (in Journal of Book of Mormon Studies, 2012)  "Joseph Smith and the Architecture of Genesis" (in The Temple: Ancient and Restored, Eborn Books, 2016)  "Lehi's Dream and the Garden of Eden" (in Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship, 2017)  "An Early Christian Context for the Book of Moses" (in Tracing Ancient Threads in the Book of Moses: Inspired Origins, Temple Contexts, and Literary Qualities, Eborn Books, 2021)     Click here to learn more about David Calabro
