Our inspiration for this episode of the ReadMHK podcast is this year's K-State First Book, Unthinkable: Who Survives When Disaster Strikes - and Why by Amanda Ripley. This book reviews not only disasters, both natural and man-made throughout history, but uses those disasters for context to examine how and why people survive, and what we can do to increase our odds of survival. Join us as we speak with Annie Spence, a personal trainer who offers client-centered coaching, based on her years of experience, her degree in Kinesiology, and her broad-reaching professional certifications. Thanks to her previous strength training, Annie survived a traumatic crush injury in New Zealand that led to a six-month hospital stay, left her with 29 screws and three plates in her pelvis and spine, and she eventually had a complete hip replacement. This left Annie with an even greater gratitude for movement, health, and strength.

I’m Jim McKeown, welcome to Likely Stories, a weekly review of fiction, Non-Fiction, and Poetry. I have a terrific book for all the voracious consumers of literature. The dust jacket is an opening to a rabbit hole of wonder. Dear Fahrenheit 451 by Annie Spence, is her first book. This is one of those books you cannot stop reading and will always have a copy close by your side.

Dam Well Better with The Iron Beaver

Last week, I sat down and had a zoom chat with Annie Spence of Unbreakable Strength Co. We talked about makes people mentally and physically strong, the future of boutique training and subversive fitness collectives. What's it like growing up queer in a Midwestern prairie? How are fitness spaces going to be like food courts? What happens when a tree falls on your tent and crushes you in the middle of the night in a remote patch of woods in rural New Zealand? And how the hell does a 24-year-old reference the TV show "Northern Exposure"? All of this, plus some Stargate and Blade Runner speculation for our cybernetic future and a gentle ribbing of those in the industry that liken themselves to wolves and lions. Annie Spence is a Detroit-based author AND LIBRARIAN. Her first book, "Dear Fahrenheit 451," was published in 2017 (Macmillan/Flatiron), and it features love letters & break-up notes to books that Spence established "intense relationships" with over the years. She has spent more than a decade working as a librarian in public libraries in the midwest. So we talked about several things, like what it was like to be a librarian during quarantine, what she's working on lately (a novel?), her all-time favorite books, and also why it is that, when compared to other art forms, we connect with books and reading in such a deep and nuanced way. Sometimes those connections are so intense as to warrant legitimate love letters.      https://www.anniespence.com/about    Excerpt: https://us.macmillan.com/excerpt?isbn=9781250106490
