No one does it like Angie. Racial tensions, police shootings, citizen uprisings. Does this sound like the setting of a YA novel? How about three of them? Her debut 'The Hate U Give,' her sophomore release 'On The Come Up,' and her third 'Concrete Rose' were all on The New York Times bestseller list, and her fantasy middle school-level book 'Nic Blake and the Remarkables: The Manifestor Prophecy' was *also* an instant New York Times bestseller! In this classic chapter of 3 Books, we sat down together at the busiest hotel in downtown Toronto on the tail end of Angie's 15-city book tour to discuss how we find the truth for ourselves, when do we bring up harsh realities to kids, and what place media and religion have in society today. We dive deep into the heightened racial and political tensions today and we search for a way out and, as always, we get to learn Angie Thomas's three most formative books. Let's flip the page back to Chapter 26 now...

She's a key part of the AEW roster – a gender-fluid, transfeminine performer who uses she/ her and they/them pronouns and wrestles in the men's division. In fact, Sonny Kiss defies definition in so many ways – and while Sonny entered AEW as the self-proclaimed ‘Concrete Rose', the wrestler has evolved as both a person and a competitor during her more than three years in the spotlight, including the more villainous persona we see at the moment! She's someone we've wanted to have on the podcast for a long time – especially as you know we love professional wrestling! – and today, we're making it happen in a big way with an absolutely superb episode. We talk about her background in dance and performing art; how she got her break in professional wrestling; some of her most memorable moments in AEW; how she came to terms with her sexuality and then her gender identity; her goals for the future; and how she enjoys switching off – along with so, so much more. If you love wrestling, you'll love this conversation – and if wrestling isn't your thing, you'll still love this chat with a brilliant individual! Today Jo Carducci is filling in for Rachel Vindman. In this episode, Jo, Jasmine, and Amanda chat about how right-wing extremists are trying to distract us and exhaust us. Whether it's refusing to focus on anything but the trans identity of the recent school shooter in Nashville, or pretending that a children's book about Rosa Parks is “pushing Critical Race Theory on kids,” we can't let our focus waver from the things that really matter: standing up for equity in our schools and communities. This week, we hear from Revida Rahman, a mom in Tennessee who co-founded OneWillCo, an organization that supports students of color. Revida shares some of the troubling racial incidents that led her and her friend Jen to found their organization, why book bans are so dangerous, and what white parents can do to stand up for racial equity in their school systems. And after that, Jasmine gets the chance to talk to Angie Thomas, the award-winning author of books like “The Hate U Give” and “Concrete Rose.” Angie chats about writing a novel about Black Lives Matter from the perspective of a teenage girl, and how she wanted to approach writing the book not just from anger, but also from love. We're very excited about her new book for middle-grade readers, “Nic Blake and the Remarkables: The Manifestor Prophecy.” It's so important not for young girls of color and for everyone to see some Black Girl Magic. Finally, Amanda, Jo and Jasmine raise a glass to awards, historic downtowns, and supportive co-workers in this episode's “Toast to Joy.”If you want to hear more from authors of banned books, you can check out our Banned Book Club events on Instagram Live. Concrete Rose, by Angie Thomas? is a story about Maverick Carter, a 17-year-old black boy, who sells drugs, has a dad in jail, and who learns his girlfriend is pregnant. But the treatment of the issues and quality of writing is what makes this book absolutely stunning.Angie writes in the voice of the teenager, with authenticity. More than that, she helps us to get inside his head and his heart, challenging us to experience the full humanity of a black boy in a world in which black teenagers are only noticed, typically, when they have encounters with a criminal justice systehe various kinds of social structural violence of Maverick's community aren't shied away from, but it is rare to have these hardened themes explored without anthropologising black teenagers and robbing them of affect, of humanity, of dreams and hopes, of struggles...of vulnerabilities. It is gorgeous to read a novel that renders black boys human instead of treating them as would be criminals.Angie Thomas joined me for a discussion on this beautiful love letter to black boys
