Today its message has grown more relevant than ever before.Guy Montag is a fireman. His job is to destroy the most illegal of commodities, the printed book, along with the houses in which they are hidden. Montag never questions the destruction and ruin his actions produce, returning each day to his bland life and wife, Mildred, who spends all day with her television “family.” But when he meets an eccentric young neighbor, Clarisse, who introduces him to a past where people didn't live in fear and to a present where one sees the world through the ideas in books instead of the mindless chatter of television, Montag begins to question everything he has ever known.

Originally aired on March 4, 1971, on CBC Stage, this production stands out for its remarkable fidelity to Ray Bradbury's groundbreaking novel, despite the constraints of a one-hour radio drama format. Adapted by Otto Lowy and produced by CBC Radio in Vancouver, the drama captivates with its minimalistic approach, relying on strong performances and a focus on the narrative's powerful themes rather than elaborate sound effects. "Fahrenheit 451" explores a dystopian future where books are banned and "firemen" are employed to burn any discovered literature. The plot centers around Montag, portrayed by Neal Denard, a fireman who becomes disillusioned with the societal norm of censorship and destruction. As he encounters clandestine hoards of books and engages with the revolutionary ideas contained within, Montag's transformation is compelling and thought-provoking. The cast includes Alan Scarfe as the authoritarian Fire Captain, alongside notable performances by Linda Sorenson, Sharon Kurt, Peter Hobwerth, Dorothy Davies, Merv Componi, Eric Walston, and Anni Scarfe. Each actor contributes to a rich tapestry of voices that bring Bradbury's chilling vision to life, making this episode a must-listen for both long-time fans and newcomers to the tale. “Do you ever read any of the books you burn?”--young neighbor, Clarisse “That's against the law.”--Guy Montag Join Kate and Sheila as they dive into Ray Bradbury's classic, Fahrenheit 451. Guy Montag is a fireman in the future whose job is to burn books and houses in which the books are found. He begins to wonder how life got so empty after his wife, Mildred, emptied a bottle of sleeping pills. The pump snake guys come and ‘save' her, then head off to their next disillusioned resident.. Guy wants to help Millie, but she tells him, “Let me alone” to which he replies, “We need not to be let alone. We need to be really bothered once in a while.” This book will bother you and challenge you too. Guy's boss, Firechief Beatty quips, “People want to be happy, isn't that right?...They live for pleasure…” And as Dr. Phil always asks, “How's that working for you?” Sadly, TVs take up entire walls of the houses. Mildred has a three wall TVs, which is not enough; she needs four. She refers to the shows as her family…'her family' is on all the time. Guy has kept some books instead of burning them. When he tries to read Ecclesiastes 3, he struggles to get meaning from the text. He pays a visit to Faber, a retired English professor he met by chance in the park a year ago who had told him, “I don't talk things, sir, I talk the meaning of things. I sit here and know I'm alive.” Are you ready to turn up the heat and read Fahrenheit 451? “To everything there is a season. A time to break down and time to build up. A time to keep silent and a time to speak…”

Book Vs. Movie: Fahrenheit 451The Ray Bradbury 1953 Classic Novel Vs. the 2018 HBO AdaptationThe Margos turn up the heat (get it?) with a look at the 1953 literary classic Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury--a banned book for decades. Inspired by the Cold War and the House of Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) investigating actors, artists, and writers claiming communism, Bradbury's work has been controversial since its publication over its depiction of an America that embraces book burning and a total lack of individualism. The story centers around a “fireman,” Guy Montag, an American in the not-so-distant future whose job is to burn all deemed objectionable books. He seems to live an ordinary life, not questioning his line of work along with his wife Mildred, who is endlessly watching TV screens (“parlor walls”) that contain her “real family.” One day, he meets teenage neighbor Clarisse, who lives a life built on free thinking, which is odd to Guy. When Clarisse goes missing, and Guy's wife believes he is behaving suspiciously (when she is not overdosing), we learn he has a big secret. He has been storing away contraband books and starting to read what has before been banned. The 2018 adaptation is written and directed by Ramin Bahrani and will be the movie we compare to the original material in this episode. In this ep, the Margos discuss:The life and work of Ray BradburyThe reasons this novel has been banned over the yearsDid Bradbury believe that censorship was a big issue? The differences between the book and movieThe cast of the 2018 film: Michael B.
