I got hit with a sucker punch, Podsters and here's what happened. I threw a curveball at a trusted colleague by asking him to share the unfiltered truth with me about how I'm perceived by a specific group of people. I asked him, thinking that I knew the answer. Hey, I'm self-aware. I know my faults; I know where I need to improve and I'm already working on myself! Lucky for me, my buddy didn't sugarcoat it. And while his response was not what I was expecting, he did me a huge favor by giving it to me straight. I now know exactly what I'm facing as I work towards changing these perceptions. Imagine if I hadn't asked. I could've been living in la-la land, thinking everything's great, my message is crystal clear, people know who I am and continuing on with that same narrative. While out there, people were making assumptions about me and my messaging was NOT resonating. Ouch. Think about your career and your goals. Are you skipping the uncomfortable feedback? Are you assuming (like I did) that you've been doing this so long, people MUST know the real you? IGNORING YOUR BLIND SPOTS IS A CAREER DERAILER. When you receive feedback that's hard to hear or that you weren't expecting – two things can happen. One, you hear a real truth and you can then own it, address it, and come back stronger. Or two, what you're hearing is a perception and they are seeing you through their own reality. Their truth. Which may be very different than yours. Manage that perception, and you're in the clear. But remember, their perception is their reality, not necessarily yours. Not so easy. Here's how you can overcome a perception: Debunk the idea or have an open conversation. Thoughtfully and unemotionally address the assumptions (even if they are incorrect) and if someone's dodging your olive branch, don't stress. You made the effort. You took the high road. And if and when that negative feedback resurfaces - you can remain confident in who you are because you know you did the right thing. Bottom line? Embrace the feedback, whether it's legit or not, because knowing how people perceive you is your golden ticket to accessing your next level. No one grows by only looking at the good things – we grow by understanding and embracing our imperfections. – I believe there is a significant difference in seeking self-exploration versus professional guidance when it comes to responding to your own body's warning signals (i.e. Pain signals) . Here's my concepts — I categorize individuals into two “types of responders”: 1. The “seasoned” individual 2. The “rookie” individual As a “rookie individual”, it may be best to seek professional help earlier rather than later so you can learn some detailed insight on how to create a successful intervention if something pops up again in the future . But… . If you're a “seasoned individual” & have previously established a working relations from a trusted healthcare provider, then I think it's certainly ok to attempt your own interventions first; however, if no progress is being made, then it may be time to call our your healthcare team to get on top of the issue - - FPT YouTube Channel Link: https://youtube.com/@fortressphysicaltherapy?si=Xp6g6ynKrZab6ayG --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/fortress-physical-therapy/message

In this episode, Jay discusses the merger between the PGA Tour, DP World Tour, and LIV Golf, which will create a new entity called NuCo or Umbrella Corporation. He explains the assets each entity brings to the table and the potential value of franchising events. Jay also emphasizes the need for guaranteed player participation to increase the value of tournaments and create a stronger identity for each event. He suggests a 50-50 split between ownership and talent, with 25% allocated to the top star players and 25% to the rank and file players. In this conversation, Jay discusses the potential restructuring of professional golf and the need for change in the industry. He explores topics such as revenue split in professional sports, balancing ownership and player compensation, incentivizing growth in professional golf, expanding the team model, alternative sponsorship models, restructuring the golf calendar, and the future of professional golf.TakeawaysThe revenue split between players and owners in professional sports is an important factor in determining player compensation. In professional golf, there is a need to balance ownership and player compensation to ensure fairness and incentivize growth.Expanding the team model in golf can create new opportunities for players and increase interest in the sport.Alternative sponsorship models, such as team sponsorship, can provide more value to sponsors and contribute to the growth of professional golf.Restructuring the golf calendar and moving away from the old professional golf model can drive interest and make the sport more appealing to a global audience.Guaranteeing player participation in key events, such as the global series and majors, can help elevate the status of these tournaments and create a more structured and competitive golf ecosystem.Chapters00:00 Introduction and Purpose of the Podcast03:14 The Merger between the PGA Tour, DP World Tour, and LIV Golf10:01 NuCo (Umbrella Corporation) and the Assets of Each Entity23:36 The Economics of Golf and the Need for Guaranteed Player Participation30:20 Franchising Valuable Events and Creating Strong Identities44:07 Franchising Events on the European Tour51:36 Ownership and Investment in the New Co56:36 Balancing the Value of Star Players and Rank and File Players57:05 Revenue Split in Professional Sports58:32 Balancing Ownership and Player Compensation59:36 Incentivizing Growth in Professional Golf01:01:03 Expanding the Team Model in Golf01:02:29 Designated Players and Team Sponsorship01:03:29 Alternative Sponsorship Models01:06:06 Restructuring the Golf Calendar01:08:15 Moving Away from the Old Professional Golf Model01:09:47 The Future of Professional Golf01:13:22 Guaranteeing Player ParticipationGolf Lovers United Fanzone!Fan of the show? For many of us the holidays are joyful, and for others they are stressful (realistically, a combination of both!) – family stuff, cold and flu season, anxiety about gift giving? There is something for everyone! In this episode of Financial Clarity for Doctors, Corey and Rachelle discuss some ways to approach gifting a bit more thoughtfully to reduce your stress around at least one aspect of the holidays. Gifting with family and friends: When giving gifts to family and friends, make sure you establish reasonable expectations that work for everyone. You don't want to make competitive gift-giving a sport in your circle, creating stress and possibly spending more money than necessary. With kids, redirect their attention to things that are not gifts. So many things to enjoy during the holidays! Yes, they will want presents, but it doesn't have to be the only thing that brings them happiness. Charitable giving: There is no right or wrong answer here, but if you are charitably inclined, this is a great time of year to gift. Set a budget for gifting and then find causes that align with your values (Charity Navigator has a great search function). Sometimes there are matching donation campaigns which make your impact larger. You can involve family and/or kids! They can help you select organizations or even participate in activities like putting together cold weather kits for the houseless. Giving is supposed to be about bringing joy to those receiving gifts, not stressing out the person giving the gift. We can get back to that with a little thought. Happy Holidays everyone! Ian Kirby's storied career as a teacher, designer, and hand craftsman with great skills of workmanship is the foundation of this interview. We talk of many things, from lessons such as to never make a piece of furniture without a purpose; how drawing from nature, not from other artists or craftsmen, is key to understanding good design; how students have changed since the 1970's; how nothing in nature is truly ugly, and nature is our visual capital; the American v. the English way of learning woodworking; the problems of the designer not being able to afford his own work; that a pantry is essential in a good kitchen; and how through our work we set a standard for living. AI expert Jonathan Green joins host Mary Ann Faremouth for an in-depth discussion on how artificial intelligence and tools like ChatGPT are transforming careers. Jonathan has a master's degree in AI from King's College London and now works as an AI consultant, helping businesses implement AI systems and processes. He shares insights from his book, ChatGPT Profits, on how professionals at any career stage can leverage AI to work more efficiently, free up time, and future-proof their careers in an AI-driven job market. Jonathan first took notice of AI about two years ago when the quality improved dramatically, especially with the release of ChatGPT version 3.5. He was struck by how readable the content was compared to previous AI-generated text. When he tested the newest AI tools, he found he could customize prompts to get better results than default settings. Jonathan began experimenting with tweaking parameters and sharing techniques with his community, ultimately developing his own formulas and processes to get the most strategic value from AI. He noticed gaps in how others were using the tools and believed drawing on his approach to writing books, courses, and blogs would allow him to use AI in a more optimized way. Jonathan emphasizes that AI works best in cooperation with humans, not as a replacement. Instead, Jonathan recommends a collaborative working relationship where AI generates drafts and surfaces ideas while humans provide the judgment, nuance, ethics, and creativity. He believes this approach enhances human skills and capabilities. Thoughtfully integrating AI to amplify uniquely human traits like strategy, innovation, leadership, and purpose can usher in a new era of productivity and meaning. When evaluating where professionals can apply AI in their daily work, Jonathan suggests starting by identifying repetitive tasks that are time-intensive but do not require critical thinking, such as answering routine emails, compiling metrics or status reports from multiple sources, and converting information from one format to another. These mundane administrative tasks are prime for automation so knowledge workers can focus energy on higher value work. Jonathan shares examples from his own business like using AI to generate show notes from transcript recordings. He emphasizes maintaining quality by reviewing AI-generated drafts before sending to finalize. The goal is not to eliminate the human but rather change their role from production to oversight, saving time while preserving accuracy. Mary Ann asks Jonathan how job seekers can leverage AI, specifically ChatGPT, to prepare for upcoming interviews. Jonathan suggests doing mock interviews with ChatGPT customized to the hiring manager and company. He explains that ChatGPT has detailed data on many major companies' interview practices and also on common interview styles. Users can request mock interviews with ChatGPT while role-playing as the actual interviewer they will be meeting with. He emphasizes customizing questions to the position as this elicits tailored responses from ChatGPT. Rehearsing interview questions ahead of time helps reduce some nerves since expected questions won't feel as intimidating. Resources Jonathan Green on LinkedIn | ChatGPT Profits Faremouth.com
Apparel brand Madhappy has built a culture brand around happiness. It launched in 2017 with a small assortment of hoodies and hats. Madhappy's style was meant to reflect the city it was born in: Los Angeles. "It was like a couple of products, very locally focused, in LA," said co-founder and CEO Peiman Raf. "At a time where everyone was like retail's dead, we'll never open up retail stores, we did a pop-up two weeks after we launched and really grew the brand in much more of a grassroots way." Raf joined this week's Modern Retail Podcast and spoke about Madhappy's slow and steady growth, its approach to partnerships as well as its newly opened store. Over the years, Madhappy has grown its assortment to include more apparel products like pants and shirts. It also has inked many partnerships, including a recent one with Uggs. The brand has launched over 20 pop-ups over the years, much of that thanks to a $1.8 million investment it received from LVMH in 2019. It also helped that early on, Madhappy had some high-profile brand reps. "We were super lucky that people wanted to represent the brand, both in terms of in our community, as well as like celebrities [like] LeBron James or Jay Z, you know, people that we grew up idolizing," Raf said. "And I think we've been lucky to continue to see that support as we've continued to grow." Despite all the partnerships and pop-ups, Raf said a big learning for the brand has been to stay focused. "Not overextending is something [that's] super important and something that we're continuing to work on," he said. Now, much of the focus is on the new 2,800-square-foot permanent location in LA. According to Raf, having physical stores around the world has helped grow the brand equity -- but Madhappy is also trying to make sure that the spaces aren't a money pit. "So we've always taken a much more sort of long view, conservative view, and do things that not only build the brand but also generate enough revenue to make sense financially," he said.

The discussion guides B2B marketers, urging adaptability, foresight, and a data-driven approach in the modern marketing era. In this podcast episode, Shandel and Melanie the important but often overlooked "prune" stage of the growth process. They explain why pruning is necessary for long-term sustainable growth and share tools and strategies for effectively pruning at both the individual and organizational levels. Listeners will learn a framework for effectively navigating this stage of growth through asking questions, collaborating with others, and carefully trimming areas that are no longer serving long-term goals. The episode provides a framework for thoughtfully navigating the prune stage through collaboration and trimming non-essential things to focus on long-term sustainable growth. Pruning involves removing things that served you in the past but may now be hindering momentum. It allows for working smarter with less effort. Collaboration and communication are vital. Involving teams and being a good listener helps facilitate change and avoids losing trust. Leaders should ask questions like "Why are we doing this?" and recognize they don't have all the answers. Delegating effectively and learning what can be pruned frees up time and space. Individuals can prune habits, set new goals, and optimize processes during downtimes. Even good things may need pruning to make room for new priorities as circumstances change over time.Topics covered:Why the prune stage is so important but often resistedThe difference between pruning happening "to you" vs. being proactive Examples of what to look for to prune like hidden renegades on teamsAsking the right questions like "Why are we doing it this way?"Learning to delegate effectively to free up time and spaceInvolving teams in decision making through collaboration and communicationSetting new goals and priorities after pruning unnecessary habitsUsing downtime to optimize processes and sharpen existing skillsPersonal examples of pruning even good habits to make room for new focus areasThanks for joining us - don't forget to subscribe, rate (or like), comment & share!Visit our website and follow us on social media - Facebook, Instagram & LinkedInWe LOVE your feedback & questions - click HERE to share your questions/feedback or email us at podcast@shandelgroup.comSubscribe for our free 66 Seconds with Shandel Group at shandel.com#LeadForClarity #LeadershipDevelopment #Leadership #Growth #ExecutiveCoaching #LeadershipCoaching #EmotionalIntelligence #Clarity #PersonalAccountability #Communication
We are delighted to have Darcy Luoma joining us today! Darcy is the author of the book Thoughtfully Fit. She has spent many years as a coach, training teams and organizations to work better and achieve thoughtful fitness in all their professional endeavors. Today's discussion is based on Darcy's extensive research, coupled with her practical experience. She joins us to shed light on the principles and strategies that form the foundation of becoming thoughtfully fit within a business setting. Bio: Darcy Luoma, CPCC, CSP, MCC, BCC, ORSCC, MSOD is the CEO of Darcy Luoma Coaching & Consulting, a company that specializes in creating high-performing people and teams. She's a sought-after coach and consultant who has worked in forty-eight industries, with more than five hundred organizations, impacting tens of thousands of leaders and employees. Darcy is the author of Thoughtfully Fit: Your Training Plan for Life & Business Success, published by Harper Horizon. Darcy has been coaching since 2004. She is one of America's most highly credentialed coaches, having earned the prestigious Master Certified Coach certification from the International Coach Federation, a distinction held by less than 4% of coaches in the world. In 2012, the University of Wisconsin–Madison sought out Darcy to design its rigorous nine-month Certified Professional Coach training program. She has served variously as the program's director, lead instructor, and director of training and quality assurance since its inception. Before Darcy founded her business in 2013, she served as the director of U.S. Senator Herb Kohl's office for twelve years, did national advance work for the White House, worked for two presidential campaigns, and served as a trusted senior advisor to a governor. Darcy has a Master of Science in Organization Development from Pepperdine University. She received the distinguished Certified Speaking Professional™ award from the National Speakers Association, the largest speaker association in the world. She has spoken at more than five hundred events, in front of audiences ranging from five to five thousand. For the last twenty-five years, she has been an avid triathlete and Ironman. She uses her grit and determination in both her athletic and professional endeavors. Along with her favorite job being a mom of two energetic teenage daughters, Darcy enjoys adventure travel, yin yoga, kickboxing, spicy chai lattes, and afternoon naps. Darcy's Story Darcy's professional path initially led her into government and politics, working for a U.S. Senator for over a decade. However, in 2012, the senator she worked for retired without seeking to be re-elected. Then, a pivotal question from her coach changed her life and encouraged her to envision a future without regrets, and Darcy made a bold leap into entrepreneurship. With the support of her then-husband, who took on the role of a full-time stay-at-home dad, she launched her own business in early 2013, defying the odds of small business failure. Then, in March 2016, her life took an unexpected turn when her husband was arrested for a serious crime. Darcy found herself navigating a tumultuous legal system, undergoing a divorce, and suddenly becoming a single mother with sole custody. Amidst all the chaos, she embarked on a journey of healing and recovery, later writing a book about her experiences. She subsequently learned that everyone has traumatic experiences and has challenges and hurdles to overcome in life. Overcoming Challenges with the Thoughtfully Fit Model After Darcy's husband was arrested, she had to test her concept of being thoughtfully fit. She emphasizes the importance of pausing, thinking, and then acting when faced with challenges and encourages people to have faith that things will be okay, even when it seems impossible. She highlights the significance of training and practices to develop thoughtfully fit responses and actions when confronted with adversity. A Practical Technique to Help with Pausing Darcy believes that it is essential to practice Thoughtfully Fit skills to be able to respond effectively to challenges. However, it is often hard to pause, especially when we witness an injustice or feel conflicted about our values. Darcy explains that everyone has different default responses, like pausing, thinking, or acting when facing challenges. She points out that our strengths can become weaknesses when taken to the extreme. She shares a practical technique called the Pause Pinch for those who struggle with pausing. It involves squeezing a reflexology point to reduce tension and calm the nerves. Navigating Conflict in Teams Most successful teams have healthy conflicts, so it is essential to create a psychologically safe environment where teams can navigate their conflicts, disagree with one another, and voice their opinions respectfully. Darcy highlights the significance of articulating and planning for a psychologically safe culture within a team. Encouraging open dialogue, respecting differing perspectives, and addressing the aftermath of decisions contribute to building a harmonious and productive team culture. Healthy Leadership A team leader must consider the opinions of team members, make decisions, and ask what is required for team members to support those decisions. Darcy emphasizes the importance of addressing concerns immediately to prevent post-meeting discussions and triangulation. She explains that leaders should lead, follow, or get out of the way when responding to situations and team dynamics. Handling Toxic Team Members Darcy stresses the importance of maintaining a healthy team environment and preventing the spread of toxic behavior. Managing toxic team members who resist change or cooperation despite coaching and conversations can be challenging. If all attempts to address their toxicity have failed, the best action is to part ways with the toxic individual because allowing their behavior to persist could negatively impact the morale and culture of the rest of the team. Maintaining Work-Life Balance and Prioritizing Self-Care Darcy maintains her sanity and a work-life balance as a business owner and mother by setting boundaries, minimizing extensive travel, and prioritizing her workouts. She explains that her commitment to regular exercise contributes to her overall well-being. She discovered the strategy of delegating tasks and recognizing her unique abilities to improve her work-life balance and productivity, allowing her to focus on things that only she can do as the CEO and Founder of her business. Have you ever heard that saying, “The devil is in the details?” The idea behind this saying is that something which seems simple and straightforward may, in fact, have a catch, a hidden element that can eat away until it causes destruction. It is important to pay attention to the little things that can cause big problems and to do the work it takes to address these important details. Seemingly small habits like laziness, lying, denial, and destructive thought patterns can create ruin. At the same time, it is also important not to snag on the wrong details. Perfectionism kills. Some things really are “good enough” and need to be left alone. Today Cinthia explores what it means to “get the devil out of the details” so that he cannot use details against us. This means we have to ask God what details are important to Him, what small things could get in the way of what He wants our lives to be. What little details are potentially eating away at the structures that hold up your life, and which things need to be accepted as “good enough?” Our Creator is very aware of details. We cannot be as perfect in detail as He is, and, unlike Him, we are vulnerable to focusing on unimportant details and missing the main point. Our creations can reflect on God and also show differences between us and Him. Sometimes we don't know what to do with the things that are eating away at what is important; even if you cannot yet get rid of something or do not know what to do with it, the What is getting in your way? Which small things make a big difference? Attention to detail can bring freedom, but it takes time. We need to think about how much time we put into an imperfection and which things need to actually be removed. To decide well, we must learn the difference between perfectionism and craftsmanship, which involves commitment to excellence but is grounded in understanding of the big picture regarding what is being crafted. Most extremes are unhealthy except in life-or-death cases, etc. Try not to snag on everything like a walking piece of Velcro. Do your habits help you to represent yourself in an honest way? Do you pay attention to your own behavior? Do you put real effort into parenting or figure that your children will navigate the world pretty well on their own? Do you pay attention to the words you say behind others' backs? What is trying to contaminate your soul? Defense mechanisms flare up to defend us; they are attempts to protect ourselves from harm. However, they can create problems later. Do your old patterns work in your current life? Is it time to upgrade what has been comfortable for so long? The enemy wants to condemn us. He will not stop, and he is relentless. We must pay attention and manage our own internal worlds. Understand your own pace. Are you crafting your own life? Do you leave it undone, skimp on the materials, etc., or are you exhausting yourself with perfectionism? Differentiate between that which you need to let go and that to which you need to attend. It is very difficult to change things you have practiced over and over again. Shortcuts are different than rest. Rest. Don't get in a hurry when it is not an emergency. Thoughtfully consider where your actions will take you. Which details are worthy of your focus? Slow down. Focus. Give your brain oxygen. God is making us into what He wants us to be. His perfecting is good, but our scorecards usually are not. He is the only Creator that lets the creation participate in the creation process. Remember, Satan wants to be better than God, and perfectionism is more in line with this than with the perfecting processes of God for His people. Remember: You came from His heart. Accept who He has made you to be. Work at being the best version of who He made you, but, if you are thinking of changing the creation that God has made, don't do it. Details are work, not weight. Effort is necessary to address details, but running on a hamster wheel to try to be good enough while feeling weighed down by fear and insecurity is counter-productive. Some things really can be “good enough.” We need to know which things these are. Don't waste energy on what does not need to be perfect. As you are looking at details in your life, ask yourself, “Does that detail matter to God?” If it matters to you but He does not seem to be doing anything, ask Him if this is important to Him, if you should be doing anything. Learn to trust Him. Do not believe the devil about which details to address, Go straight to God. Tell Him if you are struggling with yourself. Tell Him honestly what you are thinking, and talk to Him about who you are. You are not the Creator. It is amazing and tremendous that God would want to make us, and God wants us to share in His happiness about who we are.

Smart Agency Masterclass with Jason Swenk: Podcast for Digital Marketing Agencies
Do you want to communicate results and build trust with clients? Need to streamline reporting without sacrificing quality to show the full value your agency offers? Effective client reports are the best way to communicate your results to clients and improve their trust in your services. However, putting together detailed reports can be time-consuming unless you're using a proven automated reporting tool. Today's guest offers an integrated solution that helps agencies offer complete reporting without having to actually build the reports. Their services help agencies save time and reduce churn. Having built his software company from scratch, he's intimate with challenges like hiring missteps, building leadership, and learning to let go, which he also shares in this interview. Joe Kindness is the owner of AgencyAnalytics, an automated client reporting solution for marketing agencies. With Agency Analytics, agencies can connect all their clients into one system and bring in all that data to create the reports. You can even automate this by setting up those reports for your client to get monthly, or weekly, or they can log into the platform to see a dashboard. In this episode, we'll discuss: How the pandemic sparked their growth by popularizing remote work. The risks of scaling fast. Learning to build a strong leadership team. The right time to let go control of the agency. Subscribe Apple | Spotify | iHeart Radio | Stitcher | Radio FM All In On Remote: Cracking the Hiring Code Post-Pandemic Joe and his partner started like many agency owners by completely bootstrapping the process of building their company. It was not a straight path to success, but rather a start that took them to several stops before finding the best formula. “That first thing you try will definitely fail. And it won't be the thing that takes you to the end. But it's part of the journey,” he shares. After starting the AgencyAnalytics back in 2010, they still had only 14 employees by 2020. Early on, they figured hiring would be the easy part. They'd already built great software, now it was time to open a Toronto office and welcome all the people who would want to work with them. Unfortunately, they found out it's very hard to scale and find great people. It took a lot of attempts before they figured it out. What were they getting wrong about hiring and attracting the right people? Looking back, there were several factors. For instance, Joe remembers how hard it was to attract people to a remote business pre-pandemic. People thought it was a scam. Once the pandemic opened the doors to popularize the remote model, they knew they had to go all in. They hired a recruiter, HR people, and all the support they needed so Joe wouldn't have to handle all the interviewing alone. Soon they found a rhythm, gained some traction, and started to hire some generalists. Expand Cautiously and Evolve to the Needs of the Market Rapid hiring initially brought pure excitement after a decade of bootstrapping. But the thrill of scaling soon gave way to overwhelming demands. Joe added HR support, although uncertain it justified a full role. The results spoke volumes. Offloading time-consuming interviewing let Joe refocus on the agency. This milestone embodied their measured growth mindset: Test new roles cautiously, validate impact, then scale boldly. Another calculated risk? Transitioning from a niche SEO tool to an integrated agency solution. Though known for rank tracking, reporting capabilities showed greater potential. Months of pushing and prodding led to decisive commitment. Joe knew niching down as a comprehensive agency resource felt right, though not without uncertainty. In the end, their courage to strategically evolve paid off. For Joe, exciting growth requires patiently navigating uncertainty. Thoughtfully elevate support roles, validate successes, and then expand courageously. Keep your vision broad but your validations focused. Bringing Strategy into Agency Leadership Rather Than Just People Managers When you start hiring, you mostly hire people to do and manage stuff. At some point, however, you'll need to bring in team leaders. For Joe, it started with understanding what a true leader's role is. A leader is not just a manager of people. A leader brings in strategy. Therefore, being able to get to that point where you can afford or attract a person to handle the strategy is a really key moment. Joe's advice is that once you get to that point where you can bring that person in, just do it. Don't get too caught up in the equity or the salary you'll give them. The right person will give you a positive ROI and will be key to helping the company get to the next milestone. How to make sure you find the right person? There's always a chance you'll hire a bad leader, and they'll end up creating more work for you. Take the time to ensure you're choosing the right person. Don't just hire the first resume that looks great because you need help fast. More recently, Joe and his partner have used recruitment firms to find leaders to ensure they run a thorough search. It is quite expensive, but they already have a wide network to pick from and will only recommend the best fit. When to Relinquish Control and Trust Your Leaders Even after you've hired great leaders, you may find it hard to let go and step away. Joe and his partner know every facet of the business therefore sometimes fall into micromanaging. Luckily, his leaders understand they have years of experience working on all things. The systems they built are not perfect; however, something there did work, which is why they were able to grow as they did. Leaders should get processes that work better for a bigger company but this can't happen overnight because it will break everything. Find leaders that recognize that even though you didn't do everything by the textbook, it worked and now they need to transition that to the more scalable way. You'll be more likely to evolve and grow with someone with this mentality than with someone who just wants to come in and change everything. Having someone who respects the work you've done so far helps you, the owner, relinquish control, which is really hard to do. For Joe, it became easier once he hired the right leaders and recognized he was now the worst person in the room. The aspects of the business you're most passionate about will always be the hardest to let go. However once you can build a team you trust, you'll gladly step away. Moreover, you don't necessarily have to. The idea is getting to a point where you can choose to work in those parts of the business you most like but that the business doesn't necessarily need you to do it. In this episode, Troy asked Susannah George, Founder of Urban List based in Brisbane, Australia, the final five questions: Susannah acknowledges that the hardest part of growing a small business lies in "getting the right people in the right seats." She emphasizes the need to recognize that the right team members today might not align with the business's future goals. Susannah draws inspiration from "Traction," authored by Gino Wickman. She highlights Wickman's concept of GWC—Get it, Want it, Capability to do it—as a valuable framework for ensuring the right people are in the right roles. While Susannah doesn't stick to specific tools religiously, she actively seeks out podcasts and online content that resonate with her current experiences and learning objectives, enabling continuous growth. According to Susannah, the essential tools for small business growth include coaching and self-awareness. These elements facilitate strategic decision-making and personal development. Daniel Stillman is a former industrial designer turned conversation designer, who wants to help leadership teams and entire organisations stop wasting their time having ineffective conversations. We spoke about the concept of Conversation Design, the Conversation OS Canvas, and the perils of "Sheep Dip" organisational transformations. Episode highlights: 1. Sheep-dip organisational transformation doesn't work You can't send everyone on a 1-hour course, not talk about it afterwards or have any kind of follow-up, yet somehow expect to sustain organisational change. Transformation takes sustained effort & you need to keep talking. 2. All conversations are inherently designed, even the ones that aren't There's an implicit design in any conversation. You should use whatever works for you, but being aware of what isn't working allows you to re-design the conversations that don't work and get better results. 3. Leadership is the ability to create the conditions for a transformational conversation If everyone's stuck, leaders can help people get unstuck by getting people to ask the right question to offer the right insight in service of what we want to create more of in the world. 4. We all have a mental OS running on a mental CPU And, like all software, and all CPUs, there could be problems with clock speed, or bugs in the system that prevent us from getting to where we want to go. Thoughtfully designing conversations allows us to iron out the bugs. 5. Active Listening is a great hack to help design conversations Getting away from the desire to respond within 200ms, not tuning people out because you're formulating your next thought & playing back people's words can really help change your conversations for the better. Buy "Good Talk" "Life is built one conversation at a time. Learn which conversations matter, how to transform those conversations, and balance them all while leading change. Human beings are conversational animals. Every day we're in constant communication with ourselves, other people and the world around us, and while not all conversations may seem important, they all have the potential to transform our personal, professional and cultural lives for the better. I sit down with Marcus Harvey, General Manager and EMEA Sales Director at Targus, to explore their groundbreaking work in sustainability and the tech-accessories sector. With over 40 years of experience in understanding materials' social, environmental, and chemical impact, Targus is a leading force against greenwashing and a pioneer of sustainable business. Marcus shares with me how Targus has continued to innovate and prioritize sustainability, creating long-lasting, environmentally friendly tech protection. I also learn more about the collaborative efforts between Targus and their channel partners in preventing over two million plastic bottles from ending up in the ocean and landfill. One example is the Targus 15.6" EcoSmart ® Zero Waste Backpack which utilizes recycled materials in all elements of the product, even its packaging. It uses it to create the bag's standup silhouette. Thoughtfully designed to help reduce waste, the bag's external packaging is flattened into a rectangle, slipped into a pocket along the back panel, and reused as structural support and added laptop protection. In addition, this bag was designed with the environment in mind. Using GRS-certified recycled materials, 20 plastic bottles were kept out of our waterways and landfills, shredded into small flakes, re-polymerized into plastic chips, and heated and spun into yarn stitched sewn into the fabric of this EcoSmart® bag. Marcus Harvey is a passionate leader dedicated to building a successful and sustainable business with Targus. Take advantage of this engaging episode that delves into the world of sustainable tech accessories and the crucial role they play in tackling climate change. Tune in and learn how Targus is shaping the future of the tech-accessory industry.
