Send me a text messageA Talent for Murder follows Martha, a newly married librarian who suspects her husband Alan, a traveling salesman, might be involved in a series of murders. Martha enlists the help of her old friend Lily to investigate Alan's activities, which uncovers other mysterious individuals tracking him. In this episode, we also discuss some of Peter Swanson's other works and classic mystery authors, such as Patricia Highsmith and Agatha Christie. Peter also shares insights about the influence of these authors on his writing and provides some of his favorite book recommendations.
I knew I wanted to interview Peter because one, The Kind Worth Killing is one of my all time favorite thrillers and two, he is a North Shore guy and well that takes the cake! Peter was such a fun interview. We chatted thrillers, Boston, his inspiration and so much more. A Talent for Murder is his latest thriller and continues with story of Lily Kitner, one of my fave characters, but can also be read as a stand alone.
Peter Swanson joins us for a fun chat about his new thriller A Talent For Murder, his love for dead authors, the Celtics, Lucky Jim, and why he could never be a teacher. Plus – Dave and Laura are puzzled by Canadian Fruit Loops and have a bear encounter. (Not at the same time.) ITUNES … Continue reading Peter Swanson Loves Dead Authors

In Episode 163, Sara Hildreth, from @FictionMatters and co-host of the podcast Novel Pairings, returns for her third appearance on our show as our expert for Classics & Retellings 101. Sara guides us through the sometimes intimidating world of timeless reads in an accessible way. She busted some myths about classics and changed my mind about some elements of the classics. And, she has a great approach to find the perfect retelling of your favorite classics for your next read. This post contains affiliate links through which I make a small commission when you make a purchase (at no cost to you!). CLICK HERE for the full episode Show Notes on the blog. Highlights Sara explores the definitions of a classic and a modern classic book. We talk about separating the American literature canon from the idea of a classic. Sara talks about being free to define classics on personal terms. The idea of a book being labeled a “future classic.” Now-famous books that went unnoticed initially when they were released. Sara's personal reading motivations. Common issues people have when trying to tackle classic books. Notable quirks of many classics that were first published as serials. Tips and advice for approaching older books. Addressing the pressure surrounding reading or revisiting classics. Examples of nonfiction classics. Legal considerations for all those retellings. The rise of retellings as a trend with today's audience. The difference between retellings and fan fiction. Sara's recommendations for accessible classic literature. A different approach to finding the right retelling for your reading. Please note: Sara mistakenly mentions during the discussion that The Great Gatsbydid not come into popularity until its distribution to soldiers during World War I, when this actually occurred during World War II. Narrator Esther Wane narrates a thrilling holiday mystery from Peter Swanson. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Robin Whitten discuss the manor house mystery and its ghostly tale. One lonely Christmas night, Emma reads the diary of a fellow student she invited to her family's English manor house for the holidays thirty years earlier. Wane uses a vague American accent for Ashley's tale in the diary, full of wide-eyed pleasure at the “Gothic thriller” she feels transported into. With thrills, romance, and a ghost, this novella is a big gift in a small package. Read the full review of the audiobook on AudioFile's website. Published by Harper Audio. The second-ever Manifest Book Club is here! This episode is on The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle. Tori is joined by Jennifer Saulino in today's bonus episode of Manifest with Tori DeSimone. The Power of Now takes what we learned in The Untethered Soul and applies it to our daily lives. We hope you loved this episode and book as much as we did! The Power of Now by Ekhart Tolls: https://bit.ly/3MbL6Vu Questions: “The Power of Now” proposes that the present moment is all we truly have. How did this concept resonate with you, and how do you interpret it? Eckhart Tolle identifies the mind as both the enemy and the vehicle to enlightenment. Can you share your thoughts on this paradox? How has “The Power of Now” changed your perception of time—past, present, and future? Tolle suggests that suffering stems from our identification with our minds. Did this resonate with you? Have you noticed instances in your life where this might be the case? Tolle refers to the ‘Now' as a portal to our eternal, indestructible essence. How do you interpret this concept? How did Tolle's teachings on ‘presence' and ‘Now' influence your day-to-day life? These 3 quotes are forms of meditation and presence which we know is the key to enlightenment. 1. “Close your eyes and pay attention to your breath. Now picture yourself in a room filled with light and start to breath in that light and bring it into your body and just focus on bringing the light in with breath.” 2. “Close your eyes and start with your toes working your way up going through each body part and really paying attention to each body part. What it feels like, what its touching, everything.” 3. “Think “I wonder what my next thought will be” and as you wait you will be thoughtless and can slowly go into the now.” How do you implement and practice meditation in your day-to-day life? Four narrators coordinate their performances perfectly in Peter Swanson's cleverly crafted audiobook about a flawed private detective who becomes involved in the machinations of a woman from his past. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Robin Whitten discuss listening to this sequel to THE KIND WORTH KILLING, where Keith Szarabajka gives voice to detective Henry Kimball. Helen Laser delivers the backstory of his manipulative client, while Micky Shiloah is convincing as her gullible husband. Kathleen Early reprises her role from the earlier novel, returning as the disturbed Lily. Pay close attention, as nothing is what it really seems. Sara and Katie go back to their mystery roots to discuss the fun and thrilling The Kind Worth Killing by Peter Swanson, while they choke down a dirty martini.
Ashley, Jen, and Sara describe—in the bookish check-in—some summer reads they loved this summer, including Diana Gabaldon's Go Tell the Bees that I Am Gone, Alexis Hall's A Lady for a Duke, Peter Swanson's Before She Knew Him, and Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen's The Golden Couple. Sara shares a big announcement: she's signing off, so we send her off with so much love. And they offer some of their favorite ice cream flavors and places.
