What a Creep (Replay!) Season 20, Episode 7George Washington and the Tale of Ona JudgeGeorge Washington is the “Father of Our Country” and one of American history's most revered Founding Fathers. We heard tales of how brave he was and that he could not tell a lie. He also famously refused to create a fiefdom with the office of President, which means we are not stuck with someone in office unless they are duly elected. Like many white people of his time, he enslaved people. This is a fact, and though not unusual in his peer group--it's not a great look for a person who is enshrined all across the United States. People want to downplay his racism and evil acts. Listening to Bill Maher and Elon Musk minimize his actions made us realize we need to dive into one of the first President's most heinous acts by talking about badass Ona Judge. An enslaved woman who escaped from the President's home and remained free despite his relentless pursuit of her. This woman is an American hero whom everyone who truly believes in liberty and freedom needs to learn about and memorialize her contribution to history. Trigger Warning: Racism and slaverySources for this episode: Twisted Philly PodcastGeorge Washington WikiDaily MailOney Judge WikiDrunk History with Jen Kirkman Mt. Onesimus put distance between his master, Philemon, and himself. This disobedience created a debt that he had no way of repaying. Through contact with Paul, Onesimus finally went back and became a fellow laborer. The hardest thing to do sometimes is to go back to the place where you failed and start over. Onesimus reminds us there is always a way home. Like the prodigal, there is always enough bread in the Father's house to spare, because we all stand in the same place: sinners being saved by grace. VF-2079  Philemon Watch, Listen and Learn 24x7 at PastorMelissaScott.com Pastor Melissa Scott teaches from Faith Center in Glendale. Elizabeth Barrett Browning's deeply disturbing 1847 poem about a woman escaping slavery and killing her child was written to shock its intended white female readership to the abolitionist cause. Browning was the direct descendant of slave owners in Jamaica and a fervent anti-slavery campaigner, and her dramatic monologue presents a searing attack on the hypocrisy of ‘liberty' as enshrined in the United States constitution. Mark and Seamus look at the origins of the poem and its story, and its place among other abolitionist narratives of the time.Sign up to the Close Readings subscription to listen ad free and to all our series in full:Directly in Apple PodcastsIn other podcast appsRead more in the LRBMatthew Bevis: Foiled by PleasureAlethea Hayter: Reader, I married youJohn Bayley: A Question of BreathingColin Grant: Leave them weepingFara Dabhoiwala: My Runaway Slave, Reward Two Guineas Hosted on Acast. In May of 1796, 22-year-old Ona Judge escaped enslavement from the household of the most powerful man in the United States: George Washington. Soon thereafter she became the subject of an intense manhunt led by Washington himself. In a discussion that spans her scholarship on slavery, racial injustice, and gender inequality, Erica Armstrong Dunbar explores the incredible story of this courageous young woman who defied the man who had brought freedom to some, but not all, who lived in the United States. Recorded January 7, 2021.

In this episode we discuss false narratives surrounding the antebellum abolitionist efforts. To assist in that endeavor we're going to listen to some of Professor Manisha Sinha's lecture "Did Abolitionists Cause the Civil War?" Manisha Sinha is the James L. and Shirley A. Draper Chair in American History at the University of Connecticut and a leading authority on the history of slavery and abolition and the Civil War and Reconstruction. They told us that abolitionists caused the civil war. That middle class white people started and ran the abolitionist movement, and that those in bondage were happy slaves satisfied with their condition. Then, when we resisted or became a runaway, they told us it was a mental illness to want freedom from slavery. Drapetomania. They lied. They always lie. We've got some amazing musical mixes that will have you pumped and ready to dodadamnthang. For our Bridging The Gap segment we have a special gem to share with you. A startling and eye-opening look into America's First Family, Never Caught: The Washingtons' Relentless Pursuit of Their Runaway Slave, Ona Judge (Simon and Schuster, 2017) is the powerful narrative of Ona Judge, George and Martha Washington's runaway slave who risked everything to escape the nation's capital and reach freedom. When George Washington was elected president, he reluctantly left his beloved Mount Vernon to serve in Philadelphia, the temporary seat of the nation's capital. In setting up his household he took Tobias Lear, his celebrated secretary and eight slaves, including Ona Judge, about whom little has been written. As he grew accustomed to Northern ways, there was one change he couldn't get his arms around: Pennsylvania law required enslaved people be set free after six months of residency in the state. Rather than comply, Washington decided to circumvent the law. Every six months he sent the slaves back down south just as the clock was about to expire. Though Ona Judge lived a life of relative comfort, the few pleasantries she was afforded were nothing compared to freedom, a glimpse of which she encountered first-hand in Philadelphia. So, when the opportunity presented itself, Judge left everything she knew to escape to New England. Yet freedom would not come without its costs. At just twenty-two-years-old, Ona became the subject of an intense manhunt led by George Washington, who used his political and personal contacts to recapture his property. With impeccable research, historian Erica Armstrong Dunbar weaves a powerful tale and offers fascinating new scholarship on how one young woman risked it all to gain freedom from the famous founding father. Dr. Christina Gessler, a historian of women, gender, and sexuality. She seeks the extraordinary in the ordinary, and reinterprets the historical narrative in both traditional and creative forms.
